#Guide to a Weekend in Arizona

Excerpt from this Op-Ed by Jeff Goodell published in the New York Times:
On a recent Thursday evening, a freakish windstorm called a derecho (Spanish for “straight ahead”) hit Houston, a city of more than two million people that also happens to be the epicenter of the fossil fuel industry in America.
In a matter of minutes, winds of up to 100 miles per hour blew out windows on office buildings, uprooted trees and toppled electric poles and transmission towers. Nearly a million households lost power. Which meant that not only was there no light, but there was no air-conditioning. The damage from the storm was so extensive that, five days later, more than 100,000 homes and businesses were still marooned in the heat and darkness.
Luckily, the day the derecho blew in, the temperature in Houston, a city infamous for its swampy summers, was in the low to mid-80s. Hot, to be sure, but for most healthy people, not life-threatening. Of the at least eight deaths reported as a result of the storm, none were from heat exposure.
But if this storm had arrived several days later, perhaps over the Memorial Day weekend, when the temperature in Houston hit 96 degrees, with a heat index as high as 115, it might have been a very different story. “The Hurricane Katrina of extreme heat,” is how Mikhail Chester, director of the Metis Center for Infrastructure and Sustainable Engineering at Arizona State University, once put it to me, echoing the memory of the catastrophic 2005 hurricane that struck Louisiana, devastated New Orleans and killed more than 1,300 people.
What if, instead, the electricity goes out for several days during a blistering summer heat wave in a city that depends on air-conditioning in those months?
Sign up for the Opinion Today newsletter  Get expert analysis of the news and a guide to the big ideas shaping the world every weekday morning. Get it sent to your inbox.
In Dr. Chester’s scenario, a compounding crisis of extreme heat and a power failure in a major city like Houston could lead to a series of cascading failures, exposing vulnerabilities in the region’s infrastructure that are difficult to foresee and could result in thousands, or even tens of thousands, of deaths from heat exposure in a matter of days. The risk to people in cities would be higher because all the concrete and asphalt amplifies the heat, pushing temperatures as much as 15 degrees to 20 degrees in the midafternoon above surrounding vegetated areas.
The derecho that hit Houston was a warning of just how quickly risks are multiplying in our rapidly warming world. As if to prove this point, some 10 days after the Houston blackout, another windstorm knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses in and around Dallas.
One of the most dangerous illusions of the climate crisis is that the technology of modern life makes us invincible. Humans are smart. We have tools. Yeah, it will cost money. But we can adapt to whatever comes our way. As for the coral reefs that bleach in the hot oceans and the howler monkeys that fell dead out of trees during a recent heat wave in Mexico, well, that’s sad but life goes on.
Last year, researchers at Georgia Institute of Technology, Arizona State University and the University of Michigan published a study looking at the consequences of a major blackout during an extreme heat wave in three cities: Phoenix, Detroit and Atlanta. In the study, the cause of the blackout was unspecified.
“It doesn’t really matter if the blackout is the result of a cyberattack or a hurricane,” Brian Stone, the director of the Urban Climate Lab at Georgia Tech and the lead author on the study, told me. “For the purposes of our research, the effect is the same.” Whatever the cause, the study noted that the number of major blackouts in U.S. more than doubled between 2015-16 and 2020-21.
Dr. Stone and his colleagues focused on those three American cities because they have different demographics, climates and dependence on air-conditioning. In Detroit, 53 percent of buildings have central air-conditioning; in Atlanta, 94 percent; in Phoenix, 99 percent. The researchers modeled the health consequences for residents in a two-day, citywide blackout during a heat wave, with electricity gradually restored over the next three days.
The results were shocking: in Phoenix, about 800,000 people — roughly half the population — would need emergency medical treatment for heat stroke and other illnesses. The flood of people seeking care would overwhelm the city’s hospitals. More than 13,000 people would die.
Under the same scenario in Atlanta, researchers found there would be 12,540 visits to emergency rooms. Six people would die. In Detroit, which has a higher percentage of older residents and a higher poverty rate than those other cities, 221 people would die.

How do you handle dental emergencies
Tumblr media
Encountering sudden dental issues can be alarming, but understanding how to manage dental emergencies can alleviate worries and prevent further problems. Let’s explore simple steps to tackle these unexpected situations without panic.
Understanding Dental Emergencies
Dental emergencies involve sudden problems with teeth or mouth that demand immediate attention to stop pain, prevent more damage, or save a tooth. These can include severe toothaches, knocked-out teeth, cracked or broken teeth, and mouth injuries.
Step-by-Step Guide to Handling a Dental Emergency
Stay Calm: It’s tough, but staying calm helps you think clearly. Take deep breaths to stay relaxed.
Check the Situation: Look at your mouth and the affected area. Is there bleeding, swelling, or serious pain?
Stop Bleeding: Use a clean cloth or gauze to press gently on the bleeding spot. Hold it for a few minutes until the bleeding stops.
Save the Tooth: If a tooth is knocked out, hold it by the top part, not the root. Rinse it gently with water if dirty, and try to put it back in if you can. If not, keep it in milk or saliva and get to the dentist quickly.
Ease Pain: Use ibuprofen for pain but avoid putting aspirin on the tooth or gums.
Call the Dentist: Call your dentist right away. If it’s late or the weekend, find an emergency dental clinic. Explain clearly what’s happening.
Follow Instructions: Do what the dentist tells you until you reach their office.
Common Dental Emergencies and What to Do
Toothache: Rinse your mouth with warm water and gently floss to remove any food stuck. Avoid putting aspirin on the tooth.
Chipped or Broken Tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water, use a cold pack outside to reduce swelling, and keep any broken pieces.
Knocked-Out Tooth: Handle the tooth carefully and try putting it back in place. If you can’t, keep it in milk or saliva.
Object Stuck Between Teeth: Use dental floss gently to remove the object. Avoid using sharp objects.
Conclusion
Handling dental emergencies calmly and following these simple steps can prevent more problems and reduce pain. Arizona Biltmore Dentistry offers emergency dental care In Phoenix, AZ. They have skilled professionals ready to help during these unexpected moments. Remember, while these tips are helpful, seeking professional help quickly is crucial. Top Tips for Choosing the Right Dentist in Scottsdale
Introduction
Selecting the right dentist is a crucial decision that can have a lasting impact on your oral health and overall well-being. In the vibrant city of Scottsdale, Arizona, there is no shortage of dental professionals. With numerous options available, it's essential to know how to choose a dentist who suits your specific needs and preferences. In this guide, we will provide valuable insights and top tips for making an informed decision when selecting a dentist in Scottsdale.
Tumblr media
Assess Your Needs and Preferences
Before beginning your search for a dentist in Scottsdale, it's essential to assess your needs and preferences. Understanding your specific requirements will help you narrow down your choices and find the right dentist for you. Consider the following factors:
General Dentist or Specialist: Determine whether you require general dental care or if you need the expertise of a specialist, such as an orthodontist, periodontist, or oral surgeon.
Location: Think about the convenience of the dentist's location. A dental office close to your home or workplace can make appointments more accessible.
Office Hours: Consider the dentist's office hours to ensure they align with your schedule. Some dental practices offer extended hours or weekend appointments.
Insurance Coverage: Check whether the dentist accepts your dental insurance plan, as this can significantly impact your out-of-pocket expenses.
Comfort and Communication: Reflect on your comfort level with the dentist and their communication style. A dentist who listens to your concerns and provides clear explanations can enhance your experience.
Ask for Recommendations
One of the most effective ways to find a reliable dentist in Scottsdale is by seeking recommendations from friends, family, or colleagues. They can provide valuable insights into their experiences with local dentists and offer personal recommendations based on their satisfaction. Don't hesitate to ask for referrals and inquire about their specific reasons for recommending a particular dentist.
Check Qualifications and Credentials
Evaluating a dentist's qualifications and credentials is a fundamental step in the selection process. Here are some key factors to consider:
Dental License: Ensure that the dentist is licensed to practice in Arizona. You can verify their license through the Arizona State Board of Dental Examiners.
Education and Training: Review the dentist's educational background, including the dental school they attended and any specialized training or certifications they possess.
Experience: Inquire about the dentist's years of experience and their proficiency in handling specific dental procedures or treatments.
Continuing Education: Dentistry is an evolving field, and a commitment to continuing education is crucial. Ask whether the dentist participates in ongoing training to stay current with the latest advancements.
Assess the Dental Practice
When considering a dental practice in Scottsdale, it's important to evaluate various aspects of the office environment and patient experience. Pay attention to the following factors:
Office Cleanliness and Hygiene: A clean and well-maintained office reflects the dentist's commitment to infection control and patient safety.
Technological Advancements: Modern dental practices often utilize advanced technology for diagnostics and treatments. Inquire about the dental technology used in the office.
Staff Friendliness: Interactions with the dental staff can significantly impact your overall experience. Friendly and accommodating staff members contribute to a welcoming environment.
Emergency Care: Ask about the practice's policy regarding dental emergencies. Knowing that you can receive prompt care in case of an unexpected dental issue is reassuring.
Patient Reviews: Online patient reviews and testimonials can offer insights into the experiences of others at the dental practice. While individual reviews may vary, patterns in feedback can be informative.
Discuss Treatment Philosophy
Having a conversation with the dentist about their treatment philosophy and approach to patient care can help you determine if they align with your values and expectations. Some key topics to address include:
Preventive Care: Inquire about the dentist's focus on preventive care and their recommendations for maintaining good oral health.
Treatment Options: Discuss the range of treatment options available and the dentist's approach to selecting the most suitable treatment for your needs.
Patient Education: Ask about the dentist's commitment to patient education, as understanding your oral health and treatment options is essential.
Patient Comfort: Inquire about the strategies employed by the dentist to ensure patient comfort during dental procedures, especially if you experience dental anxiety.
Pricing and Payment Options
Understanding the financial aspects of dental care is essential. In Scottsdale, dental practices may have varying pricing structures and payment options. Consider the following:
Fees and Insurance: Request a clear breakdown of the fees for common dental services. Ensure that the practice accepts your dental insurance plan, if applicable.
Payment Plans: Inquire about the availability of payment plans or financing options for more extensive or costly dental procedures.
Transparency: A transparent approach to pricing and billing, with upfront communication about costs, helps you avoid unexpected expenses.
Schedule a Consultation
To make an informed decision, schedule a consultation or initial appointment with the dentist you are considering. This meeting serves as an opportunity to:
Meet the Dentist: Get to know the dentist and assess their compatibility with your needs and preferences.
Discuss Concerns: Share any dental concerns, issues, or goals you have, and evaluate the dentist's responsiveness.
Examine the Office: Observe the cleanliness and organization of the dental office, as well as the friendliness of the staff.
Ask Questions: Use the consultation to ask any remaining questions about treatment options, procedures, and expected outcomes.
Conclusion
Selecting the right dentist in Scottsdale is a decision that warrants careful consideration. Assessing your specific needs and preferences, seeking recommendations, verifying qualifications, evaluating the dental practice, discussing treatment philosophy, and understanding pricing and payment options are all vital steps in the process. By following these top tips and taking the time to make an informed decision, you can find a dentist who not only meets your oral health needs but also ensures a positive and comfortable experience throughout your dental care journey.

Tumblr media
1. Party Bus Size and Capacity:
The size of the party bus is one of the primary factors influencing the rental price. Party buses come in various sizes, accommodating different numbers of passengers. A smaller party bus with a lower passenger capacity will typically have a lower rental cost, while larger buses capable of accommodating more guests will be more expensive.
For example, a small party bus that can comfortably hold around 10-15 passengers may have a base rental price that is more budget-friendly, making it a suitable choice for smaller gatherings. On the other hand, a larger party bus designed to accommodate 20 or more passengers will have a higher base rental fee due to its increased capacity.
2. Rental Duration:
The duration for which you need the party bus plays a significant role in determining the final cost. Party bus rental companies in Scottsdale typically offer various rental packages, including hourly rates, half-day rates, and full-day rates. The hourly rate is the most common option and is suitable for many types of events.
Keep in mind that the longer you require the party bus, the more you can expect to pay. For example, a four-hour rental will generally cost less than an eight-hour rental, as you are paying for both the use of the bus and the time it spends on the road.
3. Day of the Week and Time of Day:
The day of the week and the time of day you plan to rent a party bus can impact the price. In Scottsdale, like many other cities, weekends and evenings tend to be the most popular times for celebrations. As a result, party bus prices may be higher during these peak times. If you're flexible with your schedule and can opt for a rental during weekdays or daytime hours, you may be able to secure a more affordable rate.
4. Amenities and Features:
Party buses come equipped with a range of amenities and features designed to enhance your celebration experience. The quality and quantity of these amenities can influence the price. Some common amenities and features found in party buses include:
Premium sound systems
LED lighting and disco lights
Flat-screen TVs
Mini-bars and fully-stocked bars
Comfortable seating
Dance floors
Privacy partitions
WiFi and entertainment systems
The more amenities and features a party bus offers, the higher the price is likely to be. If you're looking for a budget-friendly option, consider which amenities are essential for your celebration and which you can do without.
5. Special Occasions and Themes:
Certain special occasions and themed party buses may have higher rental costs. For example, party buses designed for weddings or other formal events may include additional decorations and amenities, contributing to a higher price. Themed party buses, such as those for bachelor or bachelorette parties, often have unique features that cater to the theme, which can also result in a higher rental fee.
6. Additional Services and Fees:
Be aware of additional services and fees that can impact the final cost of renting a party bus. These may include:
Chauffeur service: Party bus rentals typically include a chauffeur, and their fee is often included in the total price. However, it's customary to provide a tip for the driver, so factor this into your budget.
Fuel and mileage charges: Some party bus rental companies may charge for fuel and mileage, especially for longer trips. Make sure to inquire about these fees upfront.
Cleaning and damage fees: If the party bus requires extensive cleaning after your event or if there is any damage to the vehicle, you may incur additional charges.
Gratuity: Some party bus companies may automatically add a gratuity to the total bill. Be sure to confirm this with the rental company and understand the gratuity rate.
7. Location and Availability:
The location of the party bus rental company in Scottsdale can also affect the price. Companies located in more central or popular areas of the city may charge higher rates due to their proximity to popular destinations and venues. Availability is another consideration. During peak seasons or busy weekends, party buses may be in higher demand, which can lead to higher prices.
8. Inclusions and Exclusions:
It's essential to carefully review what is included in the rental price and what is not. Some party bus companies may include certain amenities, such as bottled water or specific entertainment options, in the base price. Others may charge additional fees for these inclusions. Understanding what is covered by the base rental price and what may incur extra charges will help you make an accurate cost assessment.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, party bus prices in Scottsdale are influenced by various factors, including the size and capacity of the bus, the duration of the rental, the day of the week and time of day, the amenities and features offered, the occasion or theme, additional services and fees, the location of the rental company, and what is included or excluded in the rental package.
To get the best value for your celebration, it's essential to plan ahead, determine your budget, and thoroughly research different party bus rental companies in Scottsdale. Compare their offerings, prices, and customer reviews to make an informed decision that aligns with your event's needs and your budget. With the right preparation and knowledge, you can enjoy a memorable celebration aboard a party bus without breaking the bank.

Debt ceiling deal: US House overwhelmingly passes bill
Getty Images
By Sam Cabral
BBC News, Washington
The House of Representatives has approved a deal to allow the US to borrow more money, days before the world’s biggest economy is due to start defaulting on its debt.
The measure easily passed the chamber by a vote of 314-117, despite some defections on both sides of the aisle.
The US Senate must vote on the bill later this week before President Joe Biden can sign it into law.
The government is forecast to hit its borrowing limit on Monday 5 June.
That has left little margin for error as lawmakers race to avoid the US defaulting on its $31.4tn (£25tn) debt, which underpins the global financial system.
What’s in US debt ceiling deal and who won?
A simple guide to the US debt ceiling
On Wednesday evening, 165 Democrats joined 149 Republicans in approving the 99-page bill to raise the debt ceiling, allowing it to pass the House by the required simple majority.
With Republicans in control of the lower chamber of Congress and Democrats holding sway in the upper chamber and White House, a deal had proven elusive for weeks until President Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy inked a bipartisan compromise over the weekend.
In a statement, Mr Biden thanked the Speaker, saying he had negotiated in good faith.
“Neither side got everything it wanted,” said the president. “That’s the responsibility of governing.”
A triumph for Speaker McCarthy
Kevin McCarthy was able to push Joe Biden and reluctant Democrats to the negotiating table by passing a bill that raised the debt limit but included a laundry list of conservative priorities.
Then he was able to hold his party together as he struck a less ambitious deal with the president that modestly trimmed the growth in federal spending and added some new conditions on aid for low-income Americans.
That was not enough for a group of hard-line conservatives, some of whom hinted they would unseat Mr McCarthy and force a new election for Speaker.
But by Wednesday, even the hottest of firebrands were backing away from their rhetoric. And when it came time to vote, a majority of Republicans approved Mr McCarthy’s deal.
While the hard-liners may grumble, it is clear they do not have anywhere near the level of support they would need to replace Mr McCarthy – or even any idea who to replace him with.
The agreement suspends the debt ceiling until 1 January 2025.
The legislation would result in $1.5tn in savings over a decade, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office said on Tuesday.
But the bill’s passage had been in jeopardy after lawmakers from both parties voiced opposition.
Ultra-conservative Republicans complained they had secured too few concessions in exchange for raising the debt limit.

Democrats objected to provisions raising work requirements for Americans on federal food aid, and restarting student loan repayments.
Emanuel Cleaver, a Missouri Democrat, said he would vote for the bill, even though he viewed it as the “second serving of Satan’s sandwiches”.
The leader of the House Democrats, Hakeem Jeffries, said his party had politically bailed out the Republican Speaker.
“Once again, House Democrats to the rescue to avoid a dangerous default,” said the New York congressman.
Eli Crane, an Arizona Republican who had vowed to stop the bill, tweeted: “More Democrats voted for this ‘historic conservative victory’ than Republicans.
“What a joke.”

Republicans control the House by a narrow 222-213 majority, but Speaker McCarthy was able to push the bill over the line with support from political centrists on both sides of the aisle.
He framed the package as “the biggest cut and savings this Congress has ever voted for”.
The bill is not yet assured of passage. It now heads to the Senate, where some combination of Democratic and Republican votes may again be needed.
What Danes can teach the US about its debt crisis
Could a US debt default unleash global chaos?
One conservative Republican, Mike Lee of Utah, has already threatened to use “every procedural tool” to stall consideration of the deal.
Left-wing Senator Bernie Sanders also came out against the bill on Wednesday, saying he cannot “in good conscience” support it.
Both Democratic and Republican leaders in the Senate are working to ensure that a bill reaches Mr Biden’s desk for his signature this weekend before a default can occur.
The last time the US came this close to overshooting its debt ceiling, in 2011, the credit agency Standard & Poor’s downgraded the country’s rating, a move that has yet to be reversed.
Before Wednesday’s vote, US stock markets ended the day down a little, with the Dow closing 0.4% lower, while the S&P and Nasdaq both dipped by 0.6%.

Starting today, C+ – Cobs You Go Eventing is available on H&amp. H&amp, C+ brings us a fresh show all about eventing cows, inspired by Morven Richie’s# SuperCob, Star X, the 14.2hh 20-year-old who took on Badminton Grassroots last year with all the winged elegance of a horse who completely can function. With the# CobsCan initiative from European Eventing identifying the breed’s extraordinary versatility, mikey’s captured the imagination of all of us who have stalks in our house. Yes, there are horses that buck for joy ( I’ve had one of those too ), and we’ve all almost certainly seen this kind of kicking up the heels shenanigans in the field, but it’s something to watch out for when they buck under saddle. 2023 Hater's Guide to the NCAA South Region.
Tumblr media
1. Alabama (29-5). Nate “Quaker” Oats has a long way to go before his squad graduates to levels of orchestrated murder and cover-ups not seen since the 2003 Baylor squad – but buddy, we are getting close! Let me recap: their best player has yet to face any discipline for delivering a gun to his (now former) teammate, who committed a murder shortly after. As a result of the shooting, there’s now a five-year-old who will grow up without a mother because apparently “nobody fights without guns anymore.” The response from the university, athletic department, and head coach has been – at best – tone deaf and at worse, embarrassingly trite. Now, their fans are wearing shirts reading “Killin’ our way through the SEC in ’23.” Nuke this entire state from orbit – it’s the only way to be sure.
2. Arizona (28-6). They always manage to have a solid team despite their location in the middle of a desert. You know, playing basketball in a desert offers a lot of difficulties. Number one being, you’re playing basketball in a desert.
3. Baylor (22-10). During an external review of how the university handled sexual assaults, a final report stated Baylor administrators actively discouraged reporting of sexual assaults, the athletic department continually failed to address sexual assault and high-ranking school officials suppressed reports of 52 (!) rapes and sexual misconduct incidents between 2011-14. FIFTY-TWO. Like most institutions of higher education, Baylor is more interested in protecting their brand than their students. Cocaine Bear is 100% based on the daring and exhilarating adventures of Baylor live mascots (Buckshot and Juan) rampaging through Waco!
4. Virginia (25-7). If we wanted to watch the most boring brand of basketball ever, we would have invited the Wisconsin Badgers to this tournament. Virginia will always be the school for students not racist enough to get into Mississippi or Tennessee but too white to go anywhere else (looking at you, Sam Hauser).
5. San Diego State (27-6). Every year we are forced to read a myriad number of stories detailing how experienced (read: old) this team is, or how “it’s finally the Aztecs’ year!” Until this team employs traditional Aztec warfare strategies – capturing their opponents to sacrifice them in religious rituals -- you can count on them never making the second weekend of the tournament.
6. Creighton (21-12). Stop trying to make Creighton happen. It’s never going to happen. These idiot fans practically rioted when the basketball team hired a black head coach. For the last twenty years they’ve sported a full erection for white three-point shooters who can’t play defense. You might as well root for a team of IT project managers playing basketball while wearing those inflatable dinosaur costumes; they have the exact same chance of making the round of 32 as Creighton.
7. Missouri (24-9). The Tigers have not won a conference championship in 30 years. 96% of their fans pronounce the state name as “misery.” That is the perfect way to describe living in this state. Can you name one relevant historical “moment” about Mizzou basketball? Don’t bother checking the internet; their Wikipedia page is just a list of their records against Big 12 and SEC schools. This school has no redeeming value, every single one of their 24 wins could be defined as “empty,” and I would rather drink battery acid than watch them play.
8. Maryland (21-12). The charter member of the ACC will never be accepted as a member of the Big Ten, but oh wow, look at these bags of money we got from TV networks! Oh, well we guess you can join. Where do I start with these people?
Kevin Willard ain’t it. This guy bitched nonstop the one year the Big Ten played their conference tournament in NYC. He still looks like a penis in a suit.
The women’s team is tougher than the men’s team six days a week and twice on Sunday.
People usually riot when they are angry about something; these idiots do so when their teams win key games.
They had a student group called “The Turgeonites” who dressed up as…their head coach?
This program’s glory days ended before the ink could dry on Gary Williams’ retirement papers.
9. West Virginia (19-14). It’s hard for me to like anything Buzz Williams has done during his career traveling to various backwoods outposts of college basketball, but this moment of him dancing to “Take Me Home, Country Roads” on the WVU logo after a Marquette win in 2012 was incredible. Fuck Bob Huggins and his stool; get this guy a Lazy Boy recliner already. West Virginia recently gave Huggins’ stool a degree because its IQ is better than 2/3 of the student body.
10. Utah State (26-8). Between 2000-2010, the Aggies amassed the fourth most wins in college basketball behind Duke, Kansas, and Gonzaga, but nobody noticed because…it’s Utah. The campus boasts the oldest continuously operating college of business in the West. They are too busy claiming they invented fry sauce (ketchup + mayonnaise mixed together) and catching powder to pay attention to a bouncing orange ball.
11. NC State (23-10). It’s OK if you’ve forgotten about this school, what with their proximity to Duke and North Carolina – Chapel Hill. The Wolfpack have not won their conference since 1989 and their conference tournament since 1987. In the late 80’s, the program – led by Jim Valvano, now known as “Jimmy V” – was accused of grade fixing, lowered or waived entrance requirements for athletes, frequent drug use by athletes (hey, it was the 80s), and the selling of sneakers and game tickets for spending money. Look, those Cookout burgers and milkshakes weren’t going to buy themselves. Any school that boasts Philip Rivers and Russell Wilson as alumni can be rocketed straight into the Mariana Trench.
12. Charleston (31-3). They’ve had a nice season and are a bit under-seeded here but miss me with this team as a popular upset pick; four appearances in the last quarter century have netted a 1-4 record. Pat Kelsey seems like a genuinely nice guy though. Charleston is the 13th oldest institution of higher learning in the United States and their most famous alumni are “not good enough to be a Wayans brother” Orlando Jones and Erick Avari, a guy you vaguely recognize but HAVE NEVER HEARD HIS NAME UNTIL NOW.
13. Furman (27-7). Yes, this is a real basketball team – with uniforms, too! The always entertaining Eye on College Basketball podcast noted that this school should adopt FurMan – just a hairy beast – as their mascot, and I’ll never not think of that now. Fun fact: the university was closed from 1861-1866 so most students could enlist with Confederate forces during the Civil War. Cannon fodder indeed.
14. UCSB (27-7). What is a Gaucho and why has this university chosen a folk symbol of…Argentina as their mascot? Apparently, a gaucho is a skilled horseman, reputed to be brave and unruly. I usually laugh out loud when I think about horses, solely because of this skit. It was a horse.
15. Princeton (21-8). I fully expected this spot to belong to Yale and had a great writeup by longtime Hater’s Guide contributor CW. Everyone wants to pick these paper tigers because a long, long time ago they managed to upset UCLA in the first round 43-41. While you ponder that blindness-inducing final score, read the writeup on Yale anyway:
Yale. It’s always a question about who is smarter: Harvard or Yale students? Well, this story should answer that question. Harvard Pranks Yale With Hilarious Fake Admissions Tour. Harvard students buy Yale sweatshirts then march onto the Yale campus where they pose as tour guides. It’s not entirely clear how they do this without the notice of the Yale admissions staff (Editor’s note: they are dumb), but in the video, they attack a group of a half dozen prospective students and their parents and proceed to give a spiel that makes Yale sound far inferior. “Yale is in many ways Harvard’s little, perhaps less successful sister,” says one fake tour guide, who goes on to make fun of the excessive amount of Gothic architecture on campus. “Yale students are stupider than Harvard students, Yale students are not as successful as Harvard students, Yale students are not as attractive as Harvard students,” he says, while the touring families look on, weirdly unfazed. Even the potential Yale students are trash.
16. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (23-10) / Southeast Missouri State (19-16). Neither of these teams has a snowball’s chance in Hell of upsetting Alabama, so when picking a rooting interest here, just think about where you would rather live – Corpus Christi, Texas, or Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Missouri just scares me for no other reason than a lot of people got their heads blown off in Ozark. At least in Corpus Christi you have actual beaches on a nice body of water -- the Mississippi River doesn’t count, you savages.
