How Hard Is the Mechanical PE Exam?
Let us accept that any significant professional exam is not easy to pass. The only difference is the intensity of preparing for and passing such an exam. Although the PE exam is not that difficult, it is not easy to pass. Passing the PE exam should not be hard once you are through the FE Exam. Because you already have experience in taking an exam like PE. First, a look at the PE Mechanical exam format and its corresponding domains.
Mechanical PE Exam Format:
The PE Mechanical Engineering Exam lasts for 8 hours and contains eighty questions. The exam has transitioned to a Computer-Based Test, and you will not be required to take reference materials to the test center. Being a CBT, the PE Mechanical exam now has alternative item-type questions to help assess a candidate’s knowledge using methods unavailable with paper-and-pencil exams.
The Mechanical PE Exam has three domains:
HVAC and Refrigeration
Machine Design and Materials
Thermal and Fluid Systems
Listed below are topics under each domain:
HVAC and Refrigeration:
Thermodynamics
Psychometrics
Heat Transfer
Fluid Mechanics
Energy/Mass Balances
Heating/Cooling Loads
Equipment and Components
Systems and Components
Machine Design and Materials:
Basic Engineering Practice
Engineering Science and Mechanics
Material Properties
Strength of Materials
Vibration
Mechanical Components
Joints and Fasteners
Supportive Knowledge
Thermal and Fluid Systems:
Basic Engineering Practice
Fluid Mechanics
Heat Transfer Principles
Mass Balance Principles
Thermodynamics
Supportive Knowledge
Hydraulic and Fluid Applications
Energy/Power System Applications
How Hard Is the Exam?
Let Us Talk Pass Rates:
Here are the national pass rates for the year 2023:
HVAC and Refrigeration – 72%
Machine Design and Materials – 63%
Thermal and Fluid Systems – 71%
Although Machine Design and Materials has the lowest pass rate, Fluid Systems is said to be the toughest, with the average national pass rate not more than 67%. It is also clear that the Mechanical PE Exam is hard to pass.
Reference Materials and Books:
You can only have the virtual version of the NCEES PE Mechanical Reference Handbook on exam day. It might make your exam difficult because you only have experience with the hardcover handbook. You are not allowed to bring any other reference book. The way you use your reference book determines your exam complexity. Also, the PE Mechanical Reference book does not have everything you need to solve problems or pass the exam.
Time Management:
The time taken for preparation and exam duration depends on your time management skills. While you cannot extend your exam duration, you can define your prep time. According to a recent survey, students who took 100-200 hours to prepare had a pass rate of 100%. The same poll indicates that those who studied for less than one hundred or more than two hundred hours did not score as much as those within the one hundred–200-hour mark.
Guidance and Support:
Many students prepare for the Mechanical Engineering PE Exam by themselves. While this is a solid method, very few self-study students pass the exam with high scores. It might be due to a lack of suitable study materials, not concentrating on important/complex topics, improper study schedules, and more.
It is wise to study on your own, but it is wiser to register with online course providers like the School of PE. With pass rates higher than the national average, the School of PE can quickly help you pass your exam. The PE Mechanical Exam does not have to be hard if you choose the right path!
All the best!
