So

Harald Hairfair of Norway (Hårfagre whoo)

He said that he wouldn’t cut his hair until he united Norway

because a woman named Gyda(I think?) basically called him a noob that didn’t even have kingdom lol

I’ve spoken to my father about this

The Vikings didn’t really have a stigma against men having long hair (unlike today), they only cut hair for practically. So he was basically just challenging himself

HOWEVER

I now permanently have a pet theory that Harald just really wanted to have long hair so he said he wouldn’t cut it unless he did something conceivably impossible

And then he landed in the awkward position of having to set out and do the thing out of honour (so people couldn’t just call him a coward or something)

But then he like

And had to cut his hair in an entire ceremony and stuff

And now that I’m reading a small bit about it

He became 83 years old!?!?????

Reading Snorri, 3 things come up.

1) it’s not only common but expected for the jarls and kings to send their kids out to other families to raise as a power move. Force your vassals/allies to spend resources on and get attached to their future rulers. Snorri himself was fostered as a form of payment, at least if wikipedia is citing its sources correctly.

2) he who fosters another’s son is considered the lesser. The foster-bonds are still strong and considered to tie two families together, but the family that fosters is expected to treat the foster according to his station and have their biological children come second accordingly.

3) there’s a story in which King Harald Hairfair sends his youngest son, who would become Haakon the Good, to King Æthelstan of England, who had no children and would be called the Good. It’s both a diplomatic dig in the Saga and a way to make peace. Later in the story, Æthelstan helps Haakon to retake Harald’s throne.

Vinland Saga stays in the semi-mythical range with its supernaturally strong warriors, improbable lines of descent, and the literal word ‘Saga’ in the title. Yukimura has clearly read up on the histories and stories of the time. Since VSaga retells one line of history directly, it’s not too likely that it’s meant to mirror any other part of history. The story is fictional, the structure is historical.

Even so, the line of Askeladd badly, unintentionally fostering Thorfinn/forcibly fostering Cnut stands out as a repeat of Haakon’s story. In the Sagas, the son of a relatively powerful king is fostered by the good king of England as an admission of being lesser to the king of Norway. In VSaga, the son of a politically important ?Dane? is fostered by the maybe-delusional-definitely-evil King of Britain, who views himself as being lesser to father. If Askeladd keeping Thorfinn around is viewed through the lens of fostering, it’s a form of fealty to Thors/a political move to place himself below Thors.
