Happy Fern Friday!
Two fabulous ferns from James Britten's European Ferns (1879-81). On the left is the Hart's Tongue Fern (Asplenium scolopendrium), and on the right is another spleenwort (Asplenium sagittatum).
These ferns were commonly called "spleenworts" because they were thought to treat disorders of the spleen based on the "Doctrine of Signatures", which held that plants that resembled the shapes of body parts were meant to treat ailments of those body parts.

BHL Book Feature: More Orchids!
We have been sharing illustrations and information about Émile de Puydt’s treatise, Les Orchidées (1880). You can read more about this book on our blog, with thanks to Diane M. Rielinger, Digital Projects Librarian at Harvard University Botany Libraries. For our last post on this work, we are going to share more botanical art of orchids from M. Leroy and M. Guibert.
Oncidium spectatissimum is our featured illustration.
Pleione × lagenaria is a hybrid orchid, one of many developed in cultivation.
Ascocentrum curvifolium is native to areas in southeastern Asia.
Thanks to Harvard University Botany Libraries for contributing Les Orchidées for digitization. Explore more botanical art of these orchids in our Flickr album containing all 50 chromolithographs and additional black and white drawings.
