Estranged From My Mother
Of course, I’d love it if I could be kind all the time. If I was never angry or upset or tired or frustrated, and I’d love it if I loved my family.
I am good with my Dad and technically my brother, though we rarely see each other because of distance and inconvenience. My mother, sister and I are estranged. 
I never felt I could be myself around either of them. My sister believed in being positive and agreeable 100% of the time and therefore agreed with everyone around her, pretended to love all gifts given her, being nice to people romantically interested in her, even if it meant leading them on into thinking she was in love with them (because she wanted to “be nice”). 
My mother is unrealistic and detached from social media, electronics and up to date happenings and would criticize me for hanging posters on my bedroom wall and “ruining her walls” (they come off easily, peeling gently at the tape, etc) and asked me 
WHO DO YOU KNOW WHO HANGS POSTERS ON THEIR WALLS? I’VE NEVER HEARD OF ANYONE DOING THIS. WHO DO YOU KNOW WHO DOES THIS?!
I said teeangers, college-aged students and adults. She didn’t understand. She would try to fix our relationship by forcing an interest and being fake and Stepford Wife-Helicopter Mom-Psycho lady and would sob if I said anything sarcastic. She is insane.

I would not tell her negative thoughts concerning behavior unless she repeated herself in saying she wished I hadn’t said this or that. I’d say something she didn’t agree with. She’d tell me repeatedly that she wished I hadn’t said what I said. I would stick to my guns, not changing my position. She would tell me again for the fifth time that she wished I hadn’t said what I said. So then I told her my viewpoint on the incident she was referring to...letting her know my observations of her behavior and my sisters. 
We are now estranged. 
Do try to be kind to your family, try your hardest. Try through your time living with your mother (divorced from your father), and your sister who has warped into agreeing with everything your mother and aunt say (considering they dragged her down the stairs screaming, when she was a kid). Try up to the moment your mother kicks you out of the house for having a different opinion than her. My mother asked me to be honest with her on my opinion of her, as a person. I told her, and then got kicked out of the house.
Try, but remember....not all families get along. Not all truly love one another, and that’s just as normal as a family that’s crazy in love with each other. You have your passions and your work and your friends and positive moments in life most importantly you have yourself and your opinion and your favorite color and your favorite song and you are beautiful. 
Someone out there is envious of that beauty and someone else needs you to be you and not what the world expects of you, and at your own pace. Be kind, be patient....but don’ t sacrifice yourself for someone else’s ease. It’s not your job to look good with your Mom’s house or make her look good in front of her sister. 
If escaping in a book doesn’t work....if watching your favorite show or working a fantastic job doesn’t work....If someone scolds you for making oatmeal differently than she does (yup. wouldn’t put it down if it weren’t true, guys), if that same person get frustrated you because you try something new and she doesn’t associate that newness with her desired picture of you... (I parted my hair differently that day) consider taking a break from anyone you consider toxic in your life.....even if she’s your own mother.

Even if you don’t change anything else about your lifestyle, using any of these 10 tricks will help any “dummy” lose weight!
How to Lose Weight for Dummys
1.     Green Tea Before Your Workout
One of my favorite tricks anytime I want to lose a few pounds is to drink strong green tea before my workouts. Green tea is probably natures best fat burner because it is powerful, and it is not too aggressive for your body.
A strong cup of green tea can have between 50mg and 75mg of caffeine, but it will also contain other weight loss properties.
According to a study produced in The Journal of Nutrition,
“These findings suggest that green tea catechin consumption enhances exercise-induced changes in abdominal fat and serum TG (triglycerides).”
Green tea is more than just a dose of caffeine, it has other properties which induce even more weight loss. Try drinking a cup of green tea before working out, you’ll see what I mean!
2.     Tabata Interval Training
Some of these tips will be diet advice, some will be supplements, and some will be workout advice. My first workout tip to lose weight quickly is to use Tabata interval training.
Although you can even use Tabata interval training as your entire workout for the day, I prefer to do one Tabata interval set at the end of my workout of the day.
For those of you who don’t know, the Tabata interval protocol involves 8 rounds of 20-seconds maximum effort work, followed by 10-seconds of rest.
The main benefit of using Tabata intervals is that you will increase your aerobic and anaerobic conditioning, but another important benefit is you will burn more calories in less time.
According to a study produced in the International Journal of Exercise Science,
“Tabata Interval Training (TAB) elicited a higher average VO2 value (33.1±1.5 v. 27.2±1.6 ml/kg/min, P<0.01), percent of VO2peak achieved (71.0±0.3 v. 58.4±0.3%, P<0.01), maximal HR (162.4±4.6 v. 145.6±4.8 bpm, P<0.01), and post-exercise blood lactate concentration (6.4±1.1 v. 3.7±0.5 mmol/L, P<0.01)” when compared to a Traditional Resistance Protocol (TRAD).

3.     Apple Cider Vinegar for Weight Loss

Citrulline malate is an amino acid which helps improve your circulation, while also increasing your growth hormone production. Many people drink citrulline malate before exercising (which is fine), but I believe the bigger impact of this supplement is when you drink it before sleeping.

5.     Fasted Cardio
Although this is a relatively debated topic, my opinion on fasted cardio is clear: it is great for weight loss.
I mean, it just makes sense to me.
For people other than myself, I suggest you only try fasted walking or light fasted exercise. However, I often do entire High Intensity Interval Training workouts in a “fasted” state, and it is my favorite way to train!
For those of you who have not heard of fasted cardio, it is essentially the concept of training in the morning after your nightly sleep on an empty stomach, when your body is in a “fasted” state. You cannot eat or drink anything that will raise your blood sugar during this time, however some supplements and drinks are generally allowed.
Fasted cardio does not only help you lose weight because of the calories you burn while exercise, it also can help substantially improve your internal organs and help increase your basal metabolic rate daily through a process known as cell autophagy.
Autophagy is a cellular process where dead cells are essentially “eaten” by your body and cleaned out. This is a vital process which stimulates a healthy body.

7.     German Volume Training
There are tons of workout programs which I could tell you to use to lose weight, but I want to only give you the most directly beneficial options. Even one session of German Volume Training (GVT) can substantially improve your weight loss efforts.
GVT includes doing 10 sets of 10 reps, with only 1-minute of timed rest in between each set.
For GVT, you want to focus on compound exercises. Don’t try to use this workout program with dumbbell curls or lateral raises, you want to do bench presses, overhead press, barbell rows, or other similar exercises.
German Volume Training is possible the single best weightlifting program for building muscle mass, and in my opinion, it is just as effective for weight loss.
8.     CBD Oil
Although CBD oil is much more than a weight loss product, using CBD oil each day can significantly improve your ability to lose weight for many reasons.
Outside of the other intrinsic benefits of using CBD oil, the main benefit of taking CBD oil or other CBD products is that it promotes homeostasis within the body. My favorite way to utilize yoga and mindfulness is to practice yoga about an hour before sleep. Doing so helps me sleep better, recover faster, and maintain the best possible lean muscle mass to body fat percentage!
10.  Jump Rope Workouts
There are tons of other exercises or workout programs I could add to my list, but I want to finish by telling you to do jump rope workouts for a reason!
Unlike other exercises or forms of training, jump rope workouts are the best for weight loss because they are the least stressful on your central nervous system.
I can tell you this with full confidence because I have had points in my career where I would jump rope for 30-minutes (40 seconds on/20 seconds rest for 30 minutes consecutively) before practice!
Not only is jump roping relatively easy on your central nervous system, it burns an enormous number of calories. There are many ways you can use your jump rope, but my personal suggestion is to simply add 10-minutes of jump roping to the beginning or end of your regular workouts and begin adding additional minutes over time.
If you maintain your normal workout routine and simply add 10 or more minutes of jump roping onto your workout you will notice how much more weight you are losing within a couple workouts!
According to a study published in Contemporary Pediatrics, jump roping burns approximately 775 calories per hour for a 167-pound person. The study examined numerous other forms of exercise (walking, running, various sports, etc) and the only two activities to burn more calories were running at a pace of 7 mph, and racquetball- both which are much more intense on your joints and central nervous system.
Jump roping is, in my opinion, the best form of cardio for weight loss because it is superiorly simple and effective!

The reason I gave you these 10 specific tips is because I believe anyone can add them to their current lifestyle and make losing weight easier. Unlike full diet plans or extensive long-term workout programs, you can add any of these tips on any given day and you will see an instant result.

Does Apple Cider Vinegar Help With Weight Loss?

Pucker up. Apple cider vinegar (ACV) may be part of the secret to losing some of those extra pounds—and clearing up hair, skin, and teeth too—but it's important to know some of the facts before spritzing, brushing, and downing the vinegar on a daily basis.
Nowadays, ACV is consumed with the expectation that it will miraculously reveal that six-pack or burn away any remaining gut hanging around. Dieters and bodybuilders have used ACV on a regular basis to keep weight gain in check—some even downing a shot of the acidic liquid daily. The truth is, ACV does have health benefits, but consuming it every day like clockwork may not be the answer to all your weight loss woes. ACV has acetic acid, and when consumed it can work as an appetite suppressant. If taken with starchy foods, for example, ACV can actually help stabilize your blood sugar levels, making you less likely to crave the sweet stuff. "Ultimately, our appetite is really important to pay attention to," Abbey Sharp, dietitian and blogger at Abbey’s Kitchen, told M&F.  "Most of us have really ruined our relationship with food simply by silencing these innate cues. If your body is telling you you’re hungry, you really should be listening to it, not trying to artificially manipulate its messages."
A study from Arizona State University found that people at-risk for type 2 Diabetes who consumed ACV at meals kept their insulin levels in check and had 34 percent lower glucose post-meal. Another study led by the university tested a group of people with type 2 diabetes. The subjects consumed two tablespoons of ACV before bed*, which lowered their blood sugar levels by four to six percent by the morning.
Sharp, who documented her own battle with an eating disorder in her book, "Mindful Glow Cookbook," said that the few ACV studies currently available have shown modest results and are short-lived, so it's not known if the weight loss is sustainable after regular use of the vinegar. "Research has shown that when taken consistently, adding ACV to our regime may result in you eating a bit less because it seems to increase satiety, or make you feel nauseous which may result in you eating less—though that seems like a really terrible way to live your life just for an extra pound or two lost," Sharp said. "Personally, unless there were other major changes in one’s diet, exercise or lifestyle in general, I don’t believe anyone would see substantial weight loss from any amount of ACV use."
Dating back centuries, vinegar has always served its purpose—even as a disinfectant in the early days before real medicine—but this doesn’t mean that a tablespoon or two a day of the apple version will keep the fat away. In one Japanese study, 175 overweight subjects drank one to two tablespoons of ACV every day for 12 weeks straight. Following the 12-week trial, the individuals lost an average of three pounds, then gained it back within a month following the study. So, ACV does work, but you would have to drink it every day for months in order to see substantial weight loss, according to the study.

Some studies are more far-fetched when it comes to ACV, including one claim that vinegar can help cure cancer. "I’ve heard that it fixes split ends in your hair, but to my knowledge, no one has gone and studied that specifically," said Sharp. "I think a lot of people believe that just adding a shot of ACV to their morning will help fat just melt away. That’s absolutely not how it works."
Today, ACV has been known to serve as a dandruff remedy by changing the pH balance of your scalp making it difficult for yeast to grow. "Some people claim that ACV is rich in vitamin C and B, and may contains alpha-hydroxy acid, so it could potentially help exfoliate scalp skin and reduce dandruff," Sharp said. "However, while apples are rich in vitamin C and alpha hydroxy, evidence suggests there are no detectable amounts in the vinegar. At the end of the day, there are currently no studies to support the rich vitamin amount in ACV and whether it can act as a remedy for dandruff."
It has even been used as a teeth-whitening agent when paired with baking soda, but there is very little research to back up these claims, according to Sharp. "Much of the research on using baking soda has only been completed on dental products that contain baking soda, so it’s still unclear whether baking soda alone or in combination with vinegar actually works," said Sharp. "What we do know, however, is that using ACV alone can eat away at our enamel and cause serious damage to our teeth." That's because ACV is an acid, and prolonged use over time can start to chip away** at your tooth enamel.
Overall, ACV does have small amounts of vitamin C, calcium, iron, folate, B vitamins, magnesium, and potassium and can be consumed as part of a daily diet. When using ACV, always opt for one that is organic and unpasteurized, since the pasteurization process can remove any of the vinegar's health benefits. Sharp recommends adding apple cider vinegar in salad dressings and marinades. More palatable than being diluted in water as a drink, ACV can be infused into a soothing hot toddy or a switchel, a 19th century farmer's drink of ginger, vinegar, and sweetener that originated in the Caribbean, in addition to baked goods and sauces. 
"If you’re a fan of sour things, apple cider vinegar, particularly an unfiltered ACV is a great addition to the diet," Sharp said. "But I don’t think we need to be going taking shots of it which can irritate our digestive tract and damage tooth enamel."

Hello again! In 2017 my bestest friend in the whole wide world became a health coach. Not my health coach (because I value our 30 year friendship way too much) but never the less, she has inspired me to tell my story and show my weigh loss progress. Let me start off with a little bit of back story...
I’ve been a tomboy and athlete all my life. I never was a skinny barbie doll type but I was always athletically built and no one could ever tell how much I weighed just by looking at me. I started playing team softball at age 8, team basketball by age 10, did a little boxing and even tried my hand at a few martial arts classes. In high school I played Volleyball, Basketball and even Varsity Lettered in Softball my Junior year. After high school I didn’t play any team sports and honestly felt pretty lost. Especially after my hormones and body changed after my last pregnancy at age 20. I had a molar pregnancy and it fucked up my body good. I gained weight a lot easier and in weird places (I’ll explain later), developed adult onset cystic acne, and found it more difficult to loose the weight that I put on. When I was 23 I decided that I needed to find some type of team sport to play. I looked for rec leagues online and stumbled upon a local semi-pro womans tackle football team called the Sacramento Sirens. I couldn’t believe it. I always had loved football and wanted to play on a team and now there might be a chance to fulfill that dream. I decided to check out a game and see what it was all about so in 2003, I did just that. I was hooked and decided right then and there that I would do what ever it took to try out for the 2004 season and that was what I did. I made the 2004 team (which at the time had less than 10 spots available I believe) thus started my four season career with the Sacramento Sirens. For the 2004 season I weighed 190 lbs, for the 2005 season not only had I gotten married at the end of 2004 but I now weighed 160-165 lbs. I decided to take the 2006 season off because my husband was coming home after being deployed to Iraq for almost a year and I wanted to focus on my marriage. Unfortunately, it became clear quite quickly that my marriage wasn’t going to last no matter how hard I tried and during 2006 I started putting on weight again and developed insomnia that would not be diagnosed for another 4 years. I was up to around 200 lbs by the time I went back to playing football again in 2008. I was forced to take 2009 off again to due a bad gallbladder that was more difficult to recover from due to the insomnia. I returned back to football in 2010 (which would end up being my last season) and was tipping the scales at 220-230 lbs. It was also during 2010 that my insomnia was finally diagnosed. Even with the diagnosis, I was still unable to loose the weight no matter how hard I tried. Flash forward to 2012. I had been unemployed for almost 2 years and ballooned to 265 lbs,

When I got a new job doing security for concerts and events, I finally started to loose some weight. By 2015 I was down to 230-240 lbs and over the next few years my weight would fluctuate between 210-230 lbs but finally during the last few months of 2017 I started dropping weight again. I also decided to try cutting out almost all dairy from my diet to help with the cystic acne breakouts which is extremely hard because I absolutely LOVE milk. Always have and it has been over a month (almost 2 months) since I last had milk and my skin is almost completely cleared up. In September 2017 I weighed 225 lbs and as of yesterday, January 2018, I weigh 198 lbs and am no longer in the 200 lbs club. My diet has completely changed. I eat 80% plant based protein and 20% animal protein. I have cut out almost all dairy with the exception of cheese and butter once a week. I don’t drink any carbonated drinks (that one is tough also) and drink ACV twice a day, once first thing when I wake up and right before I go to bed. I allow myself coffee once a day, Almond/Coconut Milk for my shakes, and I drink tea with local honey and water the rest of the time. It is by no way easy but I’m sticking with it. My next goal is to hit the 160 lbs mark by the end of 2018. I’m going for the slow and steady approach to weight loss because the extreme and fast weight loss has come back to bit me in ass in the past. The area of my body that I’m most concerned about losing weight in is the mons pubis area (google it) which grew to quite a large size when I ballooned to 265 lbs. It is so large that it looks like I have a man’s package between my legs. All the research I’ve done says that pretty much the only option to make this area smaller is plastic surgery which really SUCKS ASS! But I digress... I won’t let this area of my body discourage me from getting the rest of my body into shape and I look forward to sharing this journey with anyone that might be reading this.

I Hope I Can Make This the Best Decade Yet
It’s Friday, everyone! And that means another Primal Blueprint Real Life Story from a Mark’s Daily Apple reader. If you have your own success story and would like to share it with me and the Mark’s Daily Apple community please contact me here. I’ll continue to publish these each Friday as long as they keep coming in. Thank you for reading!
A lot of us work hard most of our life so that we can enjoy our retirement and do all the things we never had time to do when we were younger and worked long hours for little pay. The problem with that, however, is being old can pretty much suck especially with all the chronic disease that is so prevalent in Western society. Being overweight, poor digestion, fatigue and joint pain are symptoms that I am very familiar with and are just part of the aging process……or at least that’s what I used to think. They certainly create major impediments to living an active lifestyle and enjoying life.
I always loved competitive sports growing up especially baseball and football. Although good enough to make the high school teams, I was mediocre at best, but it was still a great experience which I will always treasure. It taught me many valuable lessons which proved critical to me later in life. I also spent 2-3 years of 5 days a week of “home” weight lifting in my basement and then best friend’s root cellar. We had no idea what we were doing but worked hard an hour or two most days and were very competitive. I became quite strong for a wimp weighing 142 pounds (benched 295) but never could put on any bulk. My friend on the other hand bulked up to about 180, left me in the dust, and continues to lift to this day.
So as an adult I took up tennis to get my competitive fix; thinking I could play the rest of my life. When I retired at 60 I was looking forward to playing tennis five days a week and working out at the gym; which I did for a couple years. Then I developed joint issues requiring surgery for De Quervain’s tenosynovitis and again for carpal tunnel syndrome. While preparing for surgery I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. After the surgeries I quit playing singles and focused on doubles as I was having too many cramping issues probably tied to the statin drugs I was taking for high cholesterol; as heart disease runs in my family. The thyroid medications probably didn’t help either.
In Nov 2013 my wife and I took a 30 day trip to Germany to visit our two daughters and grandkids for the holidays. Both of their husbands were in the Air Force, assigned to Ramstein AFB. I also had spent 5 years at Ramstein as a federal civilian; so we were also looking forward to the German brotchen and beer which we both loved. While in transit to Germany I was doing research on wild caught salmon as I decided I wanted to focus more on getting healthy and fit. The article I read came from MarksDailyApple and I became hooked. By the time I returned to the states in mid December I had spent hundreds of hours reading the blog.
I couldn’t wait to start my Primal journey on 1 Jan 2014; thinking it would be too difficult to begin right before Christmas. On 1 Jan 2014 I jumped into the Primal lifestyle and focused on high healthy fats like coconut oil, grass fed butter and avocados. Also lots of meat, fish, fresh vegetables and salads. Although the 80-20 strategy was pivotal to me believing this lifestyle was sustainable; I ended up with about 95-5 compliance. I still drink wine and/or beer almost every day in moderation of course.
A little more background on my body type, weight and the goals I hoped to achieve. I was never considered fat by my contemporaries. Although I wanted to lose some weight (15 pounds) my primary objective was to improve my fitness and quality of life. When I retired in 2006 my weight was 178 and my waist was around 37 inches.
Once I started playing lots of tennis I dropped 10 pounds and could wear 36 inch waist comfortably. I felt pretty good about myself but knew I still had a spare tire around my middle and had lots of muscle cramps and joint pain. On 1 Jan 2014 I started my journey and went from 168 pounds to 150 in 45 days. I was shocked at how fast the weight came off and how much better I felt. I quit all medications as well as over the counter pills like aspirin, tylenol, aleve, etc. Since I previously lost 10 pounds after retiring I thought I was done (28 pound loss) and wanted to see if I could maintain this weight over time.
I became even more focused (my wife would say fanatic) and started reading and listening to podcasts 3-4 hours every day on paleo/primal and functional medicine. I started playing singles again as well as going to the fitness center for 30 minutes 3 times a week for resistance training. I experimented on myself often, figuring I have little to lose and much to gain considering my age. A few of the more important hacks I utilize are Bulletproof coffee (3 cups per day/3-4 Tbsp of coconut oil and grassfed butter), taking potato starch, ACV daily, diatomaceous earth, bentonite clay, etc.
Intermittent fasting and keto have been the two most critical components of continued weight loss. I often only eat one meal per day in the late afternoon primarily because I am not very hungry even though I am pretty active. I do believe that most of us eat too much and that feeling a little hungry is important to a longer and healthier life. I have snacks like nuts and seeds, or a cup of bone broth, boiled eggs, sardines, etc. I average less than 45 carbs per day. My wife thinks I am too thin and I agree I looked better when I was heavier but I feel much better than I have in a very long time. I still have thyroid issues and some joint pain but hope to mitigate that over time. My current weight is 138 plus or minus 2 pounds contingent on my activities.
I will always be indebted to Mark Sisson and his Primal Blog which I continue to refer people to and read on a regular basis. The Primal Blueprint by Mark is a must read for anyone considering the ancestral health lifestyle.
From my perspective the most important impact this lifestyle has had on me is psychological, my outlook on life…….getting old but still looking forward. Growing old can be depressing at times especially if you have numerous health issues and take lots of medications. Living longer might be nice but is not the objective…….being healthy, having fun and enjoying family and friends for the time you do have is. For some strange reason my high school yearbook caption from 1964 was: “The Days of our Youth are the Days of our Glory.” I hope that I can turn that on it’s head and make this decade the best yet. Grok on!

On 1 Jan 2014 I jumped into the Primal lifestyle and focused on high healthy fats like coconut oil, grass fed butter and avocados. Also lots of meat, fish, fresh vegetables and salads. Although the 80-20 strategy was pivotal to me believing this lifestyle was sustainable; I ended up with about 95-5 compliance. I still drink wine and/or beer almost every day in moderation of course.
A little more background on my body type, weight and the goals I hoped to achieve. I was never considered fat by my contemporaries. Although I wanted to lose some weight (15 pounds) my primary objective was to improve my fitness and quality of life. When I retired in 2006 my weight was 178 and my waist was around 37 inches.
Once I started playing lots of tennis I dropped 10 pounds and could wear 36 inch waist comfortably. I felt pretty good about myself but knew I still had a spare tire around my middle and had lots of muscle cramps and joint pain. On 1 Jan 2014 I started my journey and went from 168 pounds to 150 in 45 days. I was shocked at how fast the weight came off and how much better I felt. I quit all medications as well as over the counter pills like aspirin, tylenol, aleve, etc. Since I previously lost 10 pounds after retiring I thought I was done (28 pound loss) and wanted to see if I could maintain this weight over time.
I became even more focused (my wife would say fanatic) and started reading and listening to podcasts 3-4 hours every day on paleo/primal and functional medicine. I started playing singles again as well as going to the fitness center for 30 minutes 3 times a week for resistance training. I experimented on myself often, figuring I have little to lose and much to gain considering my age. A few of the more important hacks I utilize are Bulletproof coffee (3 cups per day/3-4 Tbsp of coconut oil and grassfed butter), taking potato starch, ACV daily, diatomaceous earth, bentonite clay, etc.
Intermittent fasting and keto have been the two most critical components of continued weight loss. I often only eat one meal per day in the late afternoon primarily because I am not very hungry even though I am pretty active. I do believe that most of us eat too much and that feeling a little hungry is important to a longer and healthier life. I have snacks like nuts and seeds, or a cup of bone broth, boiled eggs, sardines, etc. I average less than 45 carbs per day. My wife thinks I am too thin and I agree I looked better when I was heavier but I feel much better than I have in a very long time. I still have thyroid issues and some joint pain but hope to mitigate that over time. My current weight is 138 plus or minus 2 pounds contingent on my activities.
I will always be indebted to Mark Sisson and his Primal Blog which I continue to refer people to and read on a regular basis. The Primal Blueprint by Mark is a must read for anyone considering the ancestral health lifestyle.
From my perspective the most important impact this lifestyle has had on me is psychological, my outlook on life…….getting old but still looking forward. Growing old can be depressing at times especially if you have numerous health issues and take lots of medications. Living longer might be nice but is not the objective…….being healthy, having fun and enjoying family and friends for the time you do have is. For some strange reason my high school yearbook caption from 1964 was: “The Days of our Youth are the Days of our Glory.” I hope that I can turn that on it’s head and make this decade the best yet. Grok on!

I Hope I Can Make This the Best Decade Yet
It’s Friday, everyone! And that means another Primal Blueprint Real Life Story from a Mark’s Daily Apple reader. A lot of us work hard most of our life so that we can enjoy our retirement and do all the things we never had time to do when we were younger and worked long hours for little pay. The problem with that, however, is being old can pretty much suck especially with all the chronic disease that is so prevalent in Western society. Being overweight, poor digestion, fatigue and joint pain are symptoms that I am very familiar with and are just part of the aging process……or at least that’s what I used to think. They certainly create major impediments to living an active lifestyle and enjoying life.
I always loved competitive sports growing up especially baseball and football. Although good enough to make the high school teams, I was mediocre at best, but it was still a great experience which I will always treasure. It taught me many valuable lessons which proved critical to me later in life. I also spent 2-3 years of 5 days a week of “home” weight lifting in my basement and then best friend’s root cellar. We had no idea what we were doing but worked hard an hour or two most days and were very competitive. I became quite strong for a wimp weighing 142 pounds (benched 295) but never could put on any bulk. My friend on the other hand bulked up to about 180, left me in the dust, and continues to lift to this day.
So as an adult I took up tennis to get my competitive fix; thinking I could play the rest of my life. When I retired at 60 I was looking forward to playing tennis five days a week and working out at the gym; which I did for a couple years. Then I developed joint issues requiring surgery for De Quervain’s tenosynovitis and again for carpal tunnel syndrome. While preparing for surgery I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. After the surgeries I quit playing singles and focused on doubles as I was having too many cramping issues probably tied to the statin drugs I was taking for high cholesterol; as heart disease runs in my family. The thyroid medications probably didn’t help either.
In Nov 2013 my wife and I took a 30 day trip to Germany to visit our two daughters and grandkids for the holidays. Both of their husbands were in the Air Force, assigned to Ramstein AFB. I also had spent 5 years at Ramstein as a federal civilian; so we were also looking forward to the German brotchen and beer which we both loved. While in transit to Germany I was doing research on wild caught salmon as I decided I wanted to focus more on getting healthy and fit. The article I read came from MarksDailyApple and I became hooked. By the time I returned to the states in mid December I had spent hundreds of hours reading the blog.
