Niles was relieved to be on the plane at last. Finally, he couldget away from everything he’d known for the past twenty-plus years of his lifeand try to forget the humiliation he’d suffered.

Who was he kidding? He wasn’t going to forget any of it.It’d be in there until the day he died, and then some. It didn’t matter howmuch the family had pleaded with him to change his mind, he’d decided to go. Therewere only so many times one could propose to the woman they loved and berejected outright before the feeling of mortification associated with thatplace kind of stuck. Most likely permanently.

Better to have an ocean between him and the source.

At least, so he’d imagined.

He couldn’t help but prick up his ears in trepidation whenhe heard a very familiar voice coming into the First Class section…

He shrank down as much as he could in his seat, pressing hisface nearly entirely against the window. She had to sit somewhere else, didn’tshe? He couldn’t be that unlucky!

Again, he’d been incorrect, as the flight attendant showedMiss Babcock to the empty seat next to his own.

There was no way on Earth she couldn’t spot him then, and heunstuck himself from the side of the plane to save whatever dignity he had leftwith a groan of frustration.

“Oh, God – will I ever catch a break?”

She seemed just as put out to see him, almost as if hispresence were a surprise insult, “Niles?! What the hell are you doing here?!”

“Trying to move from New York to London without incident!”he retorted, straightening himself in his seat. “What the hell are you doinghere?!”

“Clearly making a huge mistake!” the blonde snapped, beforeputting on a smile and reaching out to grab the attention of the flightattendant before the woman could move too far down the plane. “Excuse me, Ican’t be seated here. Is there anywhere else in First Class I can be moved to,or literally anywhere else on the plane that this man can be moved to?”

The flight attendant shrugged, and shook her head, “I’msorry, ma’am, but this flight is fully booked.”

The former producer’s smile faltered.

“But…it can’t be,” she said, as though trying to convinceherself. “You have to hold some of the seats back, right?”

The flight attendant frowned apologetically, “Again, I’msorry, ma’am, but those seats are held back for the crew.”

“Well, maybe one of the crew would care to do a littleswitcheroo…I mean, how often can one of you guys afford a seat like this,right?” Miss Babcock playfully nudged the woman, trying a different tactic.

This didn’t impress the flight attendant whatsoever.

“Please take your seat, ma’am, the plane is nearly ready totake off.”

So that was it. They were going to be trapped until they gotto London.

Miss Babcock scowled, and dropped into her seat, “…Fine.”

Neither one of them spoke as the safety drill was carriedout, or as the plane taxied to the runway, or during take-off. In fact, nobodysaid a word for quite some time.

Until Miss Babcock must have gotten bored, whilst Niles wasreading a magazine he’d picked up in the terminal.

“So…how’d you end up in First Class?” she asked, suddenlyoddly conversational. “Scrape up enough from the savings under your mattress?”

“My ticket was actually a gift from Mr Sheffield,” he didn’tlook up from his page to answer her. It was too easy for him to get lost in howbeautiful she was, and he was still hurt. “Said I deserved it, after everythingthat’d gone on.”

“Oh…” remembering it seemed to have an impact, and her eyes droppedto the armrest. “The other day was…certainly something, wasn’t it?”

“That’s one way of putting it,” he flicked a page overirritably. “But if you don’t mind, I’m not really in the mood for talking aboutthat. Especially seeing as there’s no point.”

There was a pause before her question came.

“What do you mean, “no point”?”

Sighing to himself, he lowered his magazine, “You know whatI mean. I offered you my heart and you stomped on it, what else is there to saybeyond that?”

Her eyes flashed with indignance at that comment.

“Well, maybe that I had my reasons to “stomp” on it, as youso delightfully put it!” she hissed. “We weren’t exactly the best of friends,were we? We had our moments, yes, but the insults? The pranks? You can’t justset somebody up like that and expect them to fall head over heels for you!”

He knew she was right, and that cut him deeply. But hispride wouldn’t let it be put entirely on him, and he had to argue back.

“Didn’t it ever occur to you that had I not insulted you andpranked you, you wouldn’t have ever even given me the time of day?” he said,trying not to raise his voice too much so he didn’t alarm the rest of the plane.“I didn’t do any of those things to make you love me. I did those things simplyso you’d notice me!”

“I noticed you!” Miss Babcock folded her arms across herchest, and it sounded like her voice was cracking.

“As more than the arm that would take your coat, or thevoice that would offer you tea or something to eat?” his voice was stern atfirst, but when he saw just how miserable she looked, it couldn’t helpsoftening. “I know I was just a butler, but the minute I saw you, I wanted tobe something more. And that was the only way I thought I could be somethingmore. It was stupid, and wrong, and I’m sorry. I couldn’t be sorrier if Itried. I didn’t mean half the things I said, and even fewer of the things Idid, and if I could start it all over again I’d give it my best shot to dothings right. But I can’t go back. Neither of us can. We can only go forward.”

Silence followed, during which she appeared to considersomething deeply, before nodding sadly.

“You’re right. Just like you were the other night, too. Ihadn’t moved on for years, even if I knew none of it was right for anybody,including me,” she shot him a quick but sorrowful glance. “I’m…sorry for theway I’ve treated you, as well. I was fixed on what my family had told me; thatBabcocks hold a certain standing in society, and anything that deviates awayfrom that makes you a disgrace and a failure. I couldn’t let go of that. Butyou made me see that I had to. It…wasn’t healthy, not moving forward likethat.”

It was almost incredible, hearing her talk like that. Hercommitment to changing her ways made him feel impressed by her proactive stance(if a little bit guilty at the knowledge that he’d inspired it by insultingher).

It inspired him to try moving the conversation on.

“And London is forward?” he asked.

“London is forward,” she replied with a nod. “Plenty oftheatres and business to be done, without all of the baggage. I get a freshstart, but I’m still doing what I love.”

He nodded as well, although it felt awkward, “Well, that’sgood, I suppose…makes the transition easier.”

“Yeah,” Miss Babcock was starting to smile – the first he’dseen from her the entire time. “What about you, anyway? What’s drawing you backhome?”

“A friend of mine wrote to me a while back, said he’d justbought a restaurant that he was in the process of renovating and he was lookingfor a manager. Someone who knew how to relate both to waitstaff and to chefs,”he explained. “He said if I was ever back living in London, the position wasmine.”

She raised an eyebrow, “Wow. That’s quite an offer.”

“It was certainly something,” it was his turn to nod. “Ididn’t think I’d ever actually take it, but here we are.”

“Hm…here we are,” she said softly. After a pause, shecleared her throat and leaned on her armrest. “You know what’s funny? This isthe longest either one of us has gone without insulting the other.”

Ah, insults. An area they were both familiar with. A comfortablesubject, really.

Did…did she want to make things comfortable? She certainlyseemed to be trying…

There was only one way to find out.

“Well, apart from the cheap shot you got in earlier about mymattress,” he reminded her, starting to grin a little.

Miss Babcock laughed, “Yeah, but since then, I mean.”

“Are you suggesting that you’ll be the last of the two of usto get the last insult in?” Niles asked, a hint of a test in his voice.

She shrugged, and gestured around them, “Well, unless youcan think of something better in the next six and a half hours!”

That was all it took.

“Oh, you can consider that challenge accepted!”

They ended up talking and laughing for the whole of thejourney, right up until the plane landed at Heathrow. They went through PassportControl, collected their luggage and went through Customs, neither going far unlessthey had to.

That was until they were about to leave the terminal. Niles consideredasking Miss Babcock if she’d like to share a cab with him to their hotels, justto spend a little bit more pleasant time with her. But he chickened out, fearingat the last minute that she might reject him anyway. They’d made it safely toLondon, they weren’t trapped anymore, there was no obligation.

So, with a very brief hug and a last goodbye he was sure he’dnever forget (luckily replacing the one they’d previously had), he went tocatch his own cab.

He didn’t stop thinking about her after that. She was in histhoughts every day, along with questions of what she was doing, and seeing, andthinking about. But life had to go on around his thoughts and feelings. He tookthe job he’d been offered, and the more he got into his work the more he foundhe enjoyed running a restaurant. He knew exactly how to manage the waiters andbar staff, and once he’d gotten rid of a few problem chefs and hired others, thingswere beginning to be run as they should be in a place of that calibre.

In a few short weeks, the restaurant became one of the mosttalked about in the city. It helped when one critic for some newspaper oranother had written a rather splendid review – soon all of his wealthiestreaders were booking tables! It had never been busier!

And it was one of their busy lunchtimes when one of thewaitstaff approached him.

“Excuse me, sir, but one of the customers wishes to speakwith you.”

Well, he should have expected it eventually. He couldn’thave a completely clean run; at some stage he was bound to have a complaint ofsome kind brought to him. He hoped he could fix it, whatever it was.

He followed the waiter out to the restaurant floor, where theyoung man quickly pointed out who had wanted to see him.

He almost couldn’t believe it.

“Miss Babcock…?”

He blinked, and she was still there. It had to be real. Shewas really sat, in his restaurant, alone at a table for two and nursing a cup ofcoffee.

She beamed back at him, “Hello, Niles.”

Incredulous, he came closer, “What are you doing here?”

“I felt like having lunch, and I was in the area,” she shrugged,before picking up her coffee to take a sip. “And I’ve heard this place has beendoing great, ever since it got a new chief manager. There’s even rumours goingout in the culinary world that he’ll own the place, a couple years down theline.”

She’d been keeping an eye on him. And that warmed him insidemore than words could express.

He grinned at her, suppressing a laugh, “Well, one doesn’tlike to boast, but he is rather good at what he does.”

“Years of experience, huh?” she teased, placing her coffeeback on the table.

“Too many to count,” he said. Then, after a moment’sthought, he gestured at the free chair opposite her. “May I?”

It was certainly less awkward than standing there for aslong as they talked, surrounded by customers and waitstaff going back andforth.

She nodded at the chair.

“Please,” she said, before relaxing more as he gotcomfortable. “So…you been in touch with the Sheffields?”

“A little, here and there. I feel like Mr Sheffield might beholding Mrs Sheffield back from calling every day, to stop the phone bills frombecoming ridiculous. The woman really can talk for hours!” Niles wiped his eyesand forehead tiredly even at the thought.

Miss Babcock laughed, “Guess some things never change, dothey?”

“No…some things don’t,” he sighed a little to himself, loweringhis arms to the table. It took him a few seconds to build up the courage to sumup and say what he’d been thinking. “I’ve missed you.”

He didn’t expect her reply.

“I’ve missed you, too, Scrub Brush,” she said softly, dropping her eyesto the table. “I…thought everything on the plane and then at the airport wouldbe the end of it, but it wasn’t.”

“It wasn’t for me, either,” Niles shook his head softly. “Idon’t think it ever will be, if I’m honest.”

For a while, both of them were silent. The rest of thediners were carrying on around them, but they barely noticed.

Someone must have been keeping an eye on them, because Nileseventually found that a cup of coffee had been slid onto the table in front ofhim, and his waitstaff were all gathered over by the bar, watching.

“Maybe it doesn’t have to be?”

Her out-of-the-blue question brought him back to theircurrent situation with more than a little bit of shock.

“What?”

Miss Babcock shifted in her chair, “We’ve um…kinda clearedthe air a little bit. We’re in a new city, new jobs, making a fresh start.Maybe it doesn’t have to be over?”

Did…did she want to try? Was she asking?

“But…what about everything that happened back in New York?”he was confused. “I thought you’d made it perfectly clear how you felt.”

She shook her head, “It wasn’t as simple as all that, Niles!Like I said before, I felt burdened by my family’s expectations. Any kind offeeling I had that didn’t fit in with that got swept under a rug.”

Her hand had stretched a little way across the table. It wasachingly close to his. His fingers twitched in her direction, anticipating hernext move.

“But I don’t want to do that anymore,” her hand closed overhis. “Being here’s helped me make a few decisions, for certain, and helped merealise a whole lot of others. I’m not keeping feelings under wraps anymore – Ijust can’t do it. I want to move forward. Be healthy. Have a new life.”

Her hand was warm against his, her eyes were shining, and hedidn’t think she’d ever looked more beautiful. Niles’ breath was hitching inhis throat, but he got his question out.

“And a new love?”

“It’s awfully bold to use the word “new”, given that the oneI have in mind is older than some of the artefacts in the British Museum,” shesmirked. “But yes…I want that, too.”

He nodded, stroking her fingers, “So do I, Miss Babcock.”

“C.C.,” she corrected, squeezing his hand lightly.

He echoed her gently, “C.C….”

He couldn’t tell who moved first, but the kiss across thetable was sweet and sublime. Her lips were soft and warm, and her hand moved upto cup his cheek, fingertips stroking his skin in an almost tantalising manner.

As they pulled away, they rested their foreheads together,and C.C. stroked her hand down his cheek to his shoulder.

“I, um…don’t have anything planned for the rest of the day.When does your shift end?”

“As soon as I tell somebody about the sick day I justdecided to take,” Niles replied immediately.

C.C.’s next suggestion was playful, “Any chance you couldmake it more than one sick day?”

“I’ll have a word with the manager,” he smirked. “He’s areasonable sort.”

“Well, good, otherwise I’d have to march into his office andgive him a piece of my mind,” she kissed the corner of his mouth.

“Maybe he’ll enjoy that later,” he growled, and pressed his lips againsthers once more and left the table. “I’ll be right back.”

He hurried into the office, followed by light applause from someof the diners who’d been watching. After a few minutes with the work schedulefor the next week, and some agreement with his staff, he returned to C.C. intriumph.

She rose from the table as he approached, and he grinned ather.

“Well, as it turns out I have the next four days completelyfree,” he put his hands together concludingly. “Are you ready?”

C.C. smiled, and went for her purse, “Just let me pay up,and then I will be.”

“No need,” Niles stopped her, putting his hand over hers. “It’son the house.”

“Oh…maybe I should eat here more often…!” she slung her bagover her shoulder and slipped her arm through his.

They began to walk to the door. Niles knew exactly where hewanted to take her – the sun was shining out, and the Embankment and South Bankwould look wonderful.

“You’ll get the finest service, guaranteed,” it was apromise, and he knew it.

They both did. After almost losing everything and severalnew opportunities missed, actually taking the chance at starting afresh withnothing but each other felt like a new chapter.

He didn’t need to look at C.C. to know she was grinning, “I’mcounting on it, Hazel.”

It was clearly a chapter that they were both eager to begin.

In addition to boosting passenger capacity, the airport wants to increase the volume of cargo it handles to 250,000 tonnes a year and host the construction of 8,500 new homes within its site.

Central to the expansion plan is to directly link the airport to London and Leeds with a newly-created railway station along the East Coast Mainline, a move it says will place close to nine million people, from the suburbs of the London northwards, within 90 minutes of the airport.

Airport chiefs say the new station could be operational by as soon as 2025 and would alleviate congestion around the capital by reducing the need to travel to Heathrow or Gatwick.

Seeking to take advantage of the airport’s 1,600-acre size, the masterplan lays out a vision for an aerotropolis development – tapping into the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, Doncaster’s logistics hub, a global air cargo campus, residential zones and a central plaza of retail outlets, restaurants and hotels. The increase in cargo freight in particular is something the masterplan says could be of huge benefit to the country, saying it “can facilitate major freight expansion supporting international trade at a crucial time in the country’s development post-Brexit”.

The required upgrades would come with a £280m price tag, to be funded by a mixture of private and public money procured from both regional and national government.

Robert Hough, the chairman of airport owner Peel Holdings, said: “If we are seriously talking about re-balancing the economy and the Northern Powerhouse, this sort of scheme should have full support. It is understandable, it is deliverable, it is not that expensive.”

The plan has been welcomed by business leaders, MPs and transport bosses, with Nigel Brewster, the vice-chairman of the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), calling upon “residents, businesses, and politicians from all parties to get behind these ambitious yet deliverable plans for our airport, which include connecting it with the East Coast Mainline”.

He added: “Doncaster Sheffield Airport and its partners have a clear aim in mind and tangible plans in place to make it a reality. We have always seen growth of the airport as being a key priority, but no one ‘actor’ can make this growth happen.

“We must come together with Peel, Doncaster Council, and Transport for the North – and the city region must also do our own part through investment in local transport infrastructure.”

Sir Nigel Knowles, the chairman of the Sheffield LEP, said: “With a single piece of infrastructure, one of the region’s biggest employment centres would be achieved, stimulating high value business investment, new housing, tourism, regional and international and connectivity.”

Mayor of Doncaster Ros Jones added: “The size of the economic prize within this vision is unrivalled and will be a long-lasting contributor to the rebalancing of our economy.”

Business reaction: Expansion will ‘benefit wider economy’

The proposals to expand Doncaster Sheffield Airport’s international profile should be used as a basis for placing the region at the heart of transport policy for the North, a top business leader has claimed.

Dan Fell, the chief executive of Doncaster Chamber of Commerce, described the airport’s expansion plans as “emblematic of the opportunity and ambition that is currently prevalent in Doncaster”.

He has today called on Transport for the North to feature the town more prominently in its overall plans to create a better connected North of England.

Mr Fell told The Yorkshire Post: “The new master plan sets out a bold and ambitious growth trajectory which, of course, is extremely positive for the airport itself.

“It is pleasing to see the focus on investing in infrastructure and particularly the plans to develop a new railway station at the airport - a project that will create jobs and growth across the region. Within this context, it is therefore frustrating that Doncaster’s economic significance is not appropriately recognised within Transport for the North’s new strategy.

“We would therefore call on TfN to see the airport’s new masterplan as being emblematic of the opportunity and ambition that is currently prevalent in Doncaster and to amend its strategy accordingly to take full cognisance of the borough’s assets, connectivity and economic potential.”

Richard Wright, the executive director of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, called the plan “a real statement about the future”.

He said: “The airport has shown year-on-year improvements in customer numbers and freight over the last few years and has been backed by regional investments like the new link road.

This shows an ambition about the future, and a long-term commitment from the Peel Group, that we should be very excited about. Our regional economy needs a successful airport and based on this we are going to have one.”

Call for new rail projects

Private companies have been invited by the Transport Secretary to propose new rail projects which will not need the Government’s funding.

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said investors now have two months to work up proposals which are financially credible without government support.

A new southern rail link to Heathrow Airport will be one of the first projects of this kind, with “third parties” such as local authorities and private sector companies invited to invest in the network.

The ideas would need to make commercial sense and fulfil passengers’ needs without an over-arching need for public support.
