You kind of have to find something to pull from when you're making music or doing art. If you're being creative, you gotta pull it from somewhere. At the end of 2017, I went to the Barbican see the Jean-Michel Basquiat exhibition called Boom For Real. I really, really got taken with his whole vibe, his way of working, his style. Him as a person, much the same way you might get into any musician. I love the way in the late 70s in New York, he was kind of an observer, just absorbing everything of the moment, of the time. Basquiat's reference points in his work come from his own cultural world, African American athletes and a lot of things to do with his life experience. In the exhibition, they mentioned this book, Henry Drefuss's Symbol Source Book. There's a whole page of symbols which were left around New York as sort of graffiti language for homeless people, looking for shelters. So three lines mean this is not a safe place. At the beginning of 2018, it's really the start of the writing process for the new Ride album. And some of the main strands of inspiration for that lyrics writing was Basquiat's stuff. We had the phrase "This is not a safe place" as a lyric in a song called In This Room. It's quite early on, we had about three songs done, we sent them to our artwork team. They latched on "This is not a safe place," and immediately said that would be a cool album title. (x)
