Structure- Research
Tumblr media
Julius Shulman- Kaufmann House, Richard Neutra, Palm Springs, 1947
Even though the image was taken in 1947 it still looks modern. Due to the style of the the photo and the composition.
The person at the side of the pool gives a sense of scale compared to the house and mountains.
The black and white film makes the image look classy and elegant.
Tumblr media
Bernice Abbott- House, Belfast, along Route 1
The viewpoint doesn't show the whole house but it works for this image, as you are getting a sense of scale from the tree and being able to see down the road a little.
The black and white film gives the image a soft feel to it. Which adds to the atmosphere of a family home.
Tumblr media
Robert Adams- The tower and a side view of St. John’s Catholic Church Stoneham, Colorado, 1965
The viewpoint is different than other images- makes the building stand out and works well to show off the texture, highlights and shadows.
You can't see the whole building but from what you can see you can tell what the rest of the Church looks like.
The dramatic sky gives a lot of contrast to the white building.
Tumblr media
Lucien Herve´- L’unesco, Paris, France, 1958
The highlights and shadows work well for this image to show the different rooms, instead of jut looking like a square.
The texture from the film gives an interesting look to the image. This adds to the mood of the image and the mystery.
The composition works well for this image as it is completely in the centre- it shows symmetry and a sense of realism to the structure.
Tumblr media
Stephen Shore- West 9th Avenue, Amarillo, Texas, October 2, 1974
The colours in this image create a happy atmosphere. The colours are almost pastel which creates a happy aesthetic.
The composition also works well for this image as it is in the centre, it catches the eye especially as there isn't too much space at the sides.
Tumblr media
Bernd and Hilda Becher- Winding Towers, 1972. Phillips
The 2 images together work really well together work really well together to show the structure from a different perspective.
Black and white works well with the images as it has clear contrast between the highlights and shadows.
The smaller building shows a sense of scale to the tall structure- I will try to show scale in at least one of the images.
Tumblr media
Thomas Struth- Hermannsgarten, Weißenfels 1991
The colour of the film (black and white) works well for this image as it adds to the atmosphere of the deserted street.
The composition of the image works well as it is in the middle of the street- that their is the same space on either side of the image.
The cars and the cable car gives the image a sense of scale to the homes and buildings.
Tumblr media
Fernando Guerra
The exposure of the image works well as it is all light colours and using a slow shutter speed- can also still see the highlights and shadows.
The one person that is blurred gives the image a sense of scale- but since they aren't sharp it doesn't draw any attention away from the structure.
I like the fact it is interior and shows a different style of the building opposed to the outside- I would like to incorporate this style in my series.
Tumblr media
Sebastian Weiss- Expolicios
The structure is minimalistic and this works well in the image as it is pleasing to look at.
The highlights and shadows work well in the image to show the contrast while keeping the image bright and happy.
Tumblr media
Paolo Tangari- Portfolio, Interior
I like the take on this interior shot as it is just a close up of the details on a tile- that works well with the series to show close details in the structure- I would like to try incorporate this style into my series, as it is a different take on the architecture.
The angle shows highlights and shadows which shows more texture and the details in the flowers.

PHOT101- Notes from ‘Place’ lecture (15/10/18)
Idris Khan
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During our lecture, we were displayed with a slideshow on different artists and photographers that incorporate the sense of ‘Place’ into their work, Khan being one of them. Khan works in a way that I have not come across before and it interested and inspired me. he takes a series of images of the same or similar subjects and overlays the images to create one layered image. I feel the structure and tone of his work appeals to me the most as it makes the viewer question the narrative of the image. I believe the sense of ‘Place’ really shines through his images and I may use this technique in the near future.
Hiroshi Sugimoto
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I particularly took interest in Sugimoto’s work with a movie theatre. the technique he has used is interesting and unique and it creates an eerie feel within these images. He has used a really long exposure throughout the duration of the movie and it creates an effect which is aesthetically pleasing. I enjoy how the light of the screen casts light and shadows in the perfect places within the theatre. I believe it gives a real sense of ‘place’ and allows the viewer to create their own narrative and story to accompany the image.
