From Chandivali Studios to Cannes 2019, Hina Khan does what very few could

Let's take a moment to appreciate Hina Khan for her stupendous journey without any internalised help. She has been an outsider who has done better work and has more credit to her than any INSIDER has.

In a swift move on Thursday, the television industry, which is one of the biggest backbone of our economy, came together to stand united {something our Hindi film industry needs to learn} against an ignorant and loose comment made onHina Khan, who made a dazzling Cannes debut this year donning a Ziad Nakad gown. For those unversed, Hina is in the French Riviera to represent her movie Lines. Like a true diva, the actress waved and smiled making us forget that this is only her first time at the coveted film festival, a feat that literally very few have managed to achieve.

While everyone including non-fans were impressed with her show, a few picked up on Hina for making it there. "When did Cannes suddenly become Chandivali studio" is all that was needed to kick-start a healthy debate on the treatment accorded to an artist who has worked on television by the 'so-called' elite sections of media who report films and film stars. From Arjun Bijlani to Kangana Ranaut's sister Rangoli, everyone came out to support the actress, boasting of her achievements in the last decade and surviving the heat without a 'godfather', again a feat not many can take credit for.

Before we count the number of achievements by Hina, let's make sure Chandivali studio, situated in Andheri East, is never looked down upon. The studio nurtures many television shows and sees a number of artists who work for over 14-15 hours to ensure daily entertainment. It is NOT an easy job. It is tough, sometimes even more than making films. But, everyone does it with finesse because television is the heartbeat of many.

Now, let's take a moment to appreciate Hina for her stupendous journey without any internalised help. She has been an outsider who has done better work and has more credit to her than any INSIDER has. Making her debut in 2009 with Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Hina won many hearts for her portrayal of the character of Akshara and continued to do so for over seven years. Yes, that kind of loyalty and attachment is a rarity. For whatever reasons, the actress bid a goodbye to the show only to witness a 360-degree turn with her gym videos and pics, to becoming a bonafide fashionista.

She participated in Bigg Boss 11 and was never the one to disguise her true self. She garnered a lot of hatred as well but her being real on the show made her a darling of the television. She also was a runner up of the series Khatron Ke Khiladi where she made sure to not let herself down and perform each task with determination.

After this, the actress signed Kasautii Zindagii Kay to play the iconic role of Komolika. She redefined television fashion as Komolika and there are no qualms about it. Amid this, she made her music video debut with Sonu Thukral's Bhasoodi. She also shot for Ankoosh Bhatt's short film 'SmartPhone' opposite actor Kunaal Roy Kapur in between and recently shot for a music video with Priyank Sharma.

The actress also has a movie with Vikram Bhatt, which she will begin shooting for from this June. If that is not enough, the actress has shown her singing prowess at multiple platforms.

All of these achievements in 10 years are two times an average actor who has been working in films.

Of course, apologies have been offered but that hardly changes the fact that TV continues to be treated as the second cousin to Bollywood and it is high time that it changes!

one thing i really adore (and correct me if im wrong since i dont follow pakistani drama's too closely) is that a lot of these actresses are older (30+) and still in high demand. im so used to actresses being cast aside once they hit ~29 but in pakistan a lot of the popular actresses (sanam saeed, mahira, hina etc) are whats considered in the west "old". obv this has to do with how young some of them can pass as and the audience watching but im still happy that at 30 theyre still killing it

I don’t necessarily agree with your statement. If you look at Hollywood’s A-listers, Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Chastian, Meryl Streep, Kerry Washington, Nicole Kidman etc. they’re all over 40 and still getting main leads. That’s not to say ageism is non-existent in Hollywood but these actresses worked really hard for a long time to be recognized and be in demand.

People do want new youthful-looking faces in the industry and that’s why we had such a influx of new actresses and actors recently (Iqra Aziz, Aiman Khan, Muneeb Butt etc.) but I’d say they serve an equivalent of CW tv show actors (Riverdale, Superheroes). They’re not really considered top actors, pretty replaceable and don’t bring in the money or ratings. This is the beginning of their careers and with dedication they might be able to stardom like Sajal or Saba have but right now its more about filling time slots.

I think your argument would work alongside Bollywood because actresses have been replaceable in their industry because of the over-glamorization in their movies for male audiences (their cinema is changing thanks to actresses like Kangana, Vidya). But in Pakistan, we’ve always had entertainment for women and the audience responds well to familiar faces. That’s why I don’t think age is a big issue..yet.

Also, the Pakistani entertainment industry is evolving so give it time before we have a separate youth, adult and senior audience. By that time we will have actors of all age groups. Currently, the industry is not big enough to have multiple choices for roles. Like you said, I think Ageism not being a big problem in Pakistan right now is a good thing and I hope this trend continues because people have never questioned men and their ages so I hope they don’t do that to women either.
