Utica to Canajoharie
We had a very comfortable stay at the Rosemont Inn Bed and Breakfast. We enjoyed our first king sized bed in a while! We were in a downstairs room, so it was convenient to get coffee early while we were packing up and getting ready for the day. Breakfast was fantastic. It started with warm apple sauce and muffins which was followed by an egg custard. So good. I don’t normally do food pictures, but these muffins were so cute - for the Rosemont.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When we left Utica it was a nice 71 degrees. After a big rain last night, we weren’t quite sure what we were in for today. It turned out beautiful and the rain looks to be further off to the east.
We had some road riding and lots of paved trail today. We had some nice rolling hills on the roads. The rain last night brought down quite a bit of debris. We had to do a bit of trail clearing in two different spots today. Like yesterday we bounced between the Barge Canal, the Mohawk River and some sightings of the old Erie Canal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You would think after that breakfast, we would not need anything to eat for a while, but when we rolled into Frankfort there was a little bakery with a line out the door. It was time for a break and second coffee, so hey. Inside, a customer was talking about the owner being on TV. I had also noticed a sign inside talking about the bakery being owned by 4 generations. Anyway, I found this news story, and it turns out that today was their grand re-opening for the 3rd and 4th generations. We had an apple finger and a chocolate filled pastry that were yummy.
Tumblr media
We came around the bend of the trail in Herkimer and caught first sight of the Fort Herkimer Historic Church with the copper roof gleaming.
Tumblr media
We have not gotten tired of watching the boats go through the locks. Rob got some more videos today that are on his SmugMug site.
Tumblr media
This is what they call a guillotine lock. They are used to just control water flow. We have seen quite a few this week, but I didn’t know what they were called until yesterday. The name fits.
The ride through the Mohawk River valley was quite beautiful. We started seeing some of the rock walls around Little Falls. Rob caught this video of the rocks and tunnel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We rolled on to Fort Plain and then Canajoharie. Around 44 miles on the trail today.

Family Learning Adventure in California
Tumblr media
Newswave @ New Delhi With the diversity of experiences on this trip, kids might not even notice that they’ve been learning Exploratorium, San Francisco Pier 15, The Embarcadero, San Francisco
Tumblr media
Set amid San Francisco’s bustling Pier 15 , the crowd-pleasing Exploratorium invites guests to experience science in action—like standing in a fog cloud or walking into the totally dark Tactile Dome. Check out six unique galleries, like the hands-on Tinkering area, where you can watch museum staffers create wonders but also make your own. In the Living Systems gallery, look at fruit flies and stem cells under a powerful microscope, or let kids “pedal” the bike-powered machine outside that approximates a giant, squirting game of jump rope. Climb the stairs to the Fisher Bay Observatory Gallery for remarkable views of sailboats, freighters, and ferries, as well as the nearby Bay Bridge and Treasure and Yerba Buena Islands. And don’t miss the all-glass observation cube at the very tip of the pier. California Academy Of Sciences 55 Music Concourse Dr, San Francisco
Tumblr media
Earth meets sky at California Academy of Sciences, a combination of natural history museum, planetarium, and aquarium located in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. Start at the domed, four-story rainforest exhibit, where you’ll spot free-flying birds, butterflies, amphibians, and even an Amazonian tree boa. Check the schedule at the Morrison Planetarium, which showcases films like Passport to the Universe, featuring footage from the Hubble Space Telescope, on its 75-foot-diameter screen. The CAS is a great place to eat too, from the house-made soups and salads at The Academy Café to the craft beer and locally-sourced dishes at The Terrace. Computer History Museum 1401 N Shoreline Blvd, Mountain View
Tumblr media
Your first impression of Silicon Valley, the Northern California brain trust south of the San Francisco Bay, may ironically be how pretty its landscape is, thanks to its lush green foothills. But the human-made wonders at Mountain View’s Computer History Museum will quickly grab your attention too. Learn about the birth of the computer, driverless cars, and tech heroes such as Ada Lovelace, an English mathematician. Another fascinating exhibit sheds light on the little-known story of Colossus, an electronic code-breaker device developed by British math whizzes and engineers, which helped win World War II. Tech Museum Of Innovation 201 S Market St, San Jose
Tumblr media
In Silicon Valley’s San Jose, the interactive Tech Museum of Innovation (nicknamed The Tech) creates a fun laboratory and learning experience for curious people of all ages. Play cyber detective or build your own robot using sensors, actuators, and controllers. Check out the Reboot Reality exhibit and design a digital painting, or climb onto Birdly, the virtual-reality flying simulator. For another kind of thrill, stand on the Shake Platform, which creates the sensation of the eight levels of earthquakes. Children’s Discovery Museum Of San Jose 180 Woz Way, San Jose
Tumblr media
Look for the distinctive purple building along San Jose’s Wozniak Way (a.k.a. “the Woz”), named after Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. Here, at the Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose, kids get hands-on science lessons from 150 exhibits and an outdoor playground lab. Start by checking out Lupe, the replica of a woolly mammoth whose remains were found in Silicon Valley, then dig in the dirt to see how archeologists search for fossils. In other areas, kids can make art, climb trees, blow giant bubbles, and pump water out of a rain catchment system. Santa Cruz Museum Of Natural History 1305 E Cliff Dr, Santa Cruz With its hybrid terrain of coastline, redwood forests, and mountains, the college town of Santa Cruz is a natural magnet for families thanks to an old-fashioned amusement park on the boardwalk. But it’s also home to the century-old Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History, set above Seabright Beach. Stop in for the touch pool—with living, local inter-tidal plants and animals—and then visit the live honeybee exhibit or the Ohlone exhibit that shows life in the pre-colonial Central Coast. (Bonus: Admission is free for kids.) Monterey Bay Aquarium 886 Cannery Row, Monterey
Tumblr media
The world-class Monterey Bay Aquarium is an essential stop in the Central Coast town of Monterey—an attraction on the same level as historic Cannery Row. You’ll see brilliantly colored jellyfish that resemble some kind of alien life form as they gracefully glide through the water. Go nose-to-nose with adorable sea otters and catch glimpses of leopard sharks and schools of sardine swimming through the kelp forest exhibit. After all, with 28-foot windows, it’s one of the world’s tallest aquariums. Check out tours, too, like the surface scuba diving or the behind-the-scenes fish feeding. National Steinbeck Center 1 Main St, Salinas
Tumblr media
With a rich agricultural and literary history, the town of Salinas makes a fascinating stop. Start by exploring the world of author John Steinbeck: You can visit his boyhood home as well as the National Steinbeck Center. Even if the kids aren’t old enough yet to have read The Grapes of Wrath or Of Mice and Men, this engaging museum will give them a vivid introduction to the author, by way of films, artifacts, sound clips, and hands-on activities that illustrate how the people and landscape of the Salinas Valley informed Steinbeck’s classic American books. Come during August for the annual Steinbeck Festival, or during February for the annual birthday celebration. Mission San Juan Bautista 406 2nd St5, San Juan Bautista The town of San Juan Bautista, located off Highway 101, makes for an excellent time capsule thanks to its downtown lined with Old West storefronts. The centerpiece of town, though, is Mission San Juan Bautista, a classic among the 21 Spanish missions built in California between 1769 and 1834. Learn about the Spanish era and note the interesting features of the mission, like the animal paw prints depicted in the floor tiles. Two fun facts: The mission sits next to the San Andreas Fault and it was featured in the Hitchcock thriller Vertigo. Gilroy Gardens 3050 Hecker Pass Hwy, Gilroy
Tumblr media
The Santa Clara County town of Gilroy boasts of being the Garlic Capital of the World. That’s a title kids might not appreciate until you take them to them to Gilroy Gardens theme park, which celebrates the herb along with the other crops growing in the Central Coast farm country. Zoom and twirl on agriculturally-themed rides like the Artichoke Dip, the Mushroom Swing, and, of course, the Garlic Twirl. Be sure to check out the 25 incredible Circus Trees, grown in nature-defying shapes. For more garlic, even in ice cream, come to town in July for the Gilroy Garlic Festival. SPOTLIGHT Casa De Fruta 10021 Pacheco Pass Hwy, Hollister
Tumblr media
What started as a humble cherry stand in 1908 is now a massive roadside attraction, welcoming more than 3 million visitors each year. Located 40 miles northeast of Monterey, Casa de Fruta in Hollister features a 10,000-square-foot market, 24-hour restaurant, sweetshop, RV park, 14-room inn, and playground. The market sells road-trip-friendly dried fruit, nuts, wine, and fresh produce from all over the state—visitors can try strawberries from Watsonville, pistachios from Fresno, garlic from Gilroy, and more. The family’s wine is offered in the traditional white, red, and blush, but visitors most often leave with a bottle of Casa de Fruta’s signature pomegranate wine. Fresno Chaffee Zoo 894 W Belmont Ave, Fresno Set along Highway 99, Fresno is the agricultural heart of the Central Valley—but it also offers gorgeous gardens, parks, and the Fresno Chaffee Zoo. The zoo has unique naturalistic enclosures such as the 13-acre, savannah-like African Adventure, and is home to almost 200 species of animals from around the globe, from red kangaroos and wildebeests to cheetahs and king cobras. Don’t miss the chance for the kids to feed giraffes and check out the behind-the-scenes experiences, like Breakfast with the Rhinos or sea lion training sessions. Read the full article

Innsbruck, historical, winter sports city, capital of Tirol, door to the Alps
Innsbruck is one of the main Austrian cities and the capital of Tirol. It is located in the west part of the country and is the most important Austrian winter sports city. Innsbruck is located in Inn Valley and its name comes from the Inn river that crosses the city center. Innsbruck has a small airport in the suburbs called Kranebitten. The main railway (Hauptbahnhof) is located in Sudtiroler Platz, only 10 minutes walking far from the city center and links Innsbruck with others Austrian localities and with main European cities. There are direct trains from Innsbruck to Munich (Munchen), Frankfurt, Verona, Zurich. From Innsbruck main railway station there are many direct trains to Vienna airport. Innsbruck is linked to many Austrian and European cities by buses also. Innsbruck is an historical city with a rich Imperial history. Tourists can visit the Imperial Palace (Hofburg), the Imperial Church (Hofkirche), the Ambras castle, the Triumphal Arch, the St.Anne`s Column. Maybe the first historical place that should be visited is the Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl). Innsbruck has many interesting museums and churches. Innsbruck card is the best way to discover the city and surroundings, saving money. Innsbruck has lots of possibilities for winter sports. The city hosted Olympic Games two times and Paralympic Games two times. Innsbruck hosts the third event of the FIS Four Hills Tournament in first days of every January. This event takes place on Bergisel ski jump and contains two ski jump events in Germany and two ski jump events in Austria. I could suggest two possibilities for spending one day in Innsbruck as a tourist. With Innsbruck card there will be no fee for public transport, cable cars, entrance to museums, ski jump, Imperial Church, Ambras castle, Imperial Palace hofburg. The touristic bus (Sightseer or hop-on-hop-off) is also free of charge with Innsbruck card and it is the best way to discover the city. To discover the historical Innsbruck but also to see a nice panorama city and one of main landmarks of the city, I would give this suggestion: start the visit with the Sightseer from the railway station or the city center and stop at Ambras castle. After visiting this nice castle, go on the trip with the Sightseer until the Bergisel ski jump, the last bus station. Go on the top of the ski jump, don`t miss to take photos and to admire the wonderful panorama. On the top of the ski jump there is a restaurant where Bergisel cake (Bergisel torte) and a good coffee can be enjoyed. Take the Sightseer again and stop to the city center. There the visit can go on with Hofburg, the Imperial Palace and the Imperial Church (Hofkirche). The second suggestion is for tourists who want to discover Innsbruck as a city with lots of possibilities for sports and hiking. Start the visit with the funicular Hungerburg and go on with the gondola until 1905 m. Seegrube chalet. Enjoy the panorama, try an apple pie and a coffee and go on with the second gondola to the top. There Hafelekar peak offers a great view from its 2256m. There is also a restarant here. Go back in the city and take the Sightseer to the Bergisel ski jump. Enjoy the nice view !

$2.9 Million Homes in California
Burlingame | $2.898 Million
A cedar-shingled 1916 cottage with three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms
Burlingame, a city in San Mateo County, between San Francisco and Palo Alto, has a population of about 28,000 and a median home sale price of $1.95 million. This Arts and Crafts house is in Burlingame Park, a historic neighborhood a few blocks from the center of one of the city’s two retail districts. There, you’ll find restaurants, boutiques, the Copenhagen Bakery and an Apple store.
Size: 2,180 square feet
Price per square foot: $1,329
Indoors: The single-level house was renovated by a previous owner and includes a recently upgraded kitchen and bathrooms. (The current owner bought the property less than six years ago.)
A central foyer with oak floors and a vintage brass pendant light opens, though windowed pocket doors, into a living room with extensive millwork and built-ins. The wood-burning brick fireplace is flanked by square, glass-fronted bookshelves, each with an adjacent window seat. The large dining room, entered from the foyer through a second set of pocket doors, has another wall of Mission-style cabinetry.
The kitchen includes white wood cabinets with marble countertops, a white bead-board wainscot and a butcher-block work area with seating placed against a wall, to make efficient use of the narrow space. The gas range is Thermador, the dishwasher Bosch and the refrigerator Sub-Zero.
Off the dining room is an office with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and a built-in corner desk and upper cabinets.
A windowed door with milk-glass panes opens to the large master suite. The master bathroom was finished with marble surfaces, a roomy tub with an integrated shower and a toilet closet. Two guest bedrooms share a bathroom faced in white subway tile, with a combined tub and shower. There is also a powder room.
A pocket door in the kitchen offers access to a carpeted, finished basement with recessed and natural light.
Outdoor space: The house occupies a corner lot with lawns and hedges and is wrapped by a white picket fence. The front door is tucked under the roof of an elevated front porch. French doors in the kitchen open to a large rear deck. Parking is in a detached one-car garage and an off-street paved area with an electric vehicle charger.
Ojai | $2.882 Million
A midcentury-modern house built in 1960, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, on a 0.75-acre lot with a swimming pool and studio outbuilding
This property is in East Ojai, two blocks north of Grand Avenue. It is surrounded by large citrus and olive ranches, and has the feeling of Tuscany, with bigger mountains. It is four miles east of the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa, a 250-acre resort that is a centerpiece of this city of 7,500, which is known for its outstanding beauty and prohibition of chain stores. Downtown Los Angeles is 80 miles southeast, and Santa Barbara is 36 miles west.
Size: 1,600 square feet
Price per square foot: $1,801
Indoors: The home was bought four years ago and brought back from a ruinous state. Original features, including sections of its redwood siding, were restored or given period replacements.
A wood-faced foyer leads to a combined living-and-dining room, where glass spans the distance between a ceramic-tile floor and a beamed, slatted ceiling, and the redwood walls have an artful, patchwork look. A large tile fireplace is fronted by a custom wrought-iron screen that swings open like a gate. (The artisan who created it also designed the iron gates that admit cars and pedestrians to the property.)
The renovated kitchen is long and lean, with white cabinetry, dark countertops, floating stainless steel shelves and high-end appliances, including a Viking range.
The three bedrooms all have slatted redwood ceilings, paneled walls, tiled floors and expansive windows. The en suite master bathroom includes a walk-in subway-tiled shower; the guest bathroom has a combined shower and tub.
There is a separate studio building with a room for lounging or working, and a sink and counter area off to the side.
Outdoor space: The professionally landscaped property has lush greenery and multiple patios; one includes an outdoor grill built in rough stone near the recently built swimming pool, while another overlooks a koi pond to the side.
Taxes: $36,025 (estimated)

Los Angeles | $2.8735 Million
A modernist house built in 1961, with four bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms, on a 0.42-acre lot with a swimming pool
The renowned Austrian-American architect Richard Neutra designed this one-story home in the Encino district of Los Angeles for a physician and his wife. It has remained in the same family ever since, along with extensive correspondence and transaction records related to its construction.
The house faces north, with views of the San Gabriel Mountains. It is a mile and a half above Ventura Boulevard, which is lined with chain stores and other businesses. Los Encinos State Historic Park is about two miles north, and Westridge-Canyonback Wilderness Park and Mulholland Drive are the same distance south. Downtown Los Angeles is 20 miles southeast. The Van Nuys Airport, which is popular with private jet owners, is six miles north.
Size: 2,676 square feet
Price per square foot: $1,074
Indoors: Passing through a glassed-in front atrium space with plantings, and a red double front door, you enter a freshly painted and carpeted area that extends the width of the house, with a transparent back wall overlooking the pool and distant mountains.
At one end is a living room with a floating fireplace along a side wall. A sliding partition that runs along a ceiling track closes off the living room from the adjacent dining area, and a second partition separates the dining room from the kitchen on the other side.
The kitchen includes ash cabinetry with hardware that is original and tile countertops that are not, and a retractable shade to block sunlight streaming through the rear wall of glass. A third sliding partition divides the kitchen from the room beyond it — a den with wood paneling and built-in floating shelves.
To the right of the entrance is a hallway leading to the three bedrooms. The master suite, which looks out to the pool, has wraparound glass walls and a private outdoor patio and putting green. The master bathroom includes double sinks and a sunken Roman tub with a shower head; the period-appropriate linoleum flooring is new.
Two guest bedrooms share the hall bathroom in between, which has a sunken bathtub and separate dressing room with a long vanity. A fourth bedroom behind the den looks out to the front atrium and is staged as an office. It has access to a bathroom with a shower; this room also opens to the pool area. A niche with washer-and-dryer hookups is here, as well.
Outdoor space: The almost-half-acre lot is large and level for the neighborhood, with extraordinary views. If the property were bought by a developer and this historic home were torn down, as is happening frequently in the hot Los Angeles real estate market, it would be a veritable crime. Parking, for two cars, is in an attached carport.
Taxes: $35,919 (estimated)

[/ultimate_ctation][vc_column_text]What makes most experiences great? I tend to find it’s usually the people behind them. This is particularly true for one specific Walla Walla Bed and Breakfast – Fat Duck Inn. When I sat down to write about my experience at Fat Duck Inn in Walla Walla wine country this quote kept coming to mind, but I couldn’t figure out why.
When life gives you lemons make apple juice and leave life wondering how you did it.
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]To be honest, it really slowed me down in my writing process because I just couldn’t wrap it around how it fit with Walla Walla Bed and Breakfasts. But it kept sticking out like a flashing, neon sign. So, I took my dog for a walk…because that’s what I do when I procrastinate try to get my thoughts together.
Why this quote? Well for context, I fell in love with it years ago and now have it framed in my kids’ room’s as a reminder that when bad sh*! happens, you can turn it around and use it to your advantage. (I also have it on a sticky note at my desk to remind me…hence the flashing neon sign.) It dawned on me when I was walking my dog that the quote had everything to do with how the owners of Fat Duck Inn – Kim and Tim Gratzer – got to Walla Walla and what is now one of my favorite B&B’s – Fat Duck Inn.
Kim and Tim Gratzer owners of Fat Duck Inn
In their mid-fifties the couple decided to take the plunge into early retirement, which included buying and running a Walla Walla Bed and Breakfast. They had the unfortunate – turned fortunate – reminder that life is short and you should spend the time you’re given doing what you want, with those you want to be with.
Starting with the lemons… Kim had a long, hard battle with Leukemia, one that she won! That was a game changer for the couple who spent their careers in Seattle raising their now grown children. It was time to reset their priorities when Kim got the clean bill of health…and time to start making apple juice.
Some couples need to take a break from one another, but I can’t get enough time with my wife…
Having nearly lost her to Leukemia, Tim told me he’s so grateful to not have a break and to work side by side with Kim everyday. You can see that love (and teamwork) each morning at breakfast. It’s inspiring and super cute.
Last minute surprise items like mushroom, spinach quiche might find its way to the morning menu.
Having been a corporate executive for half his life, Tim left his desk job at Boeing Global Services to cook…and, paint, clean, mow, garden, make spread sheets for the business side of Fat Duck Inn and everything else that comes with owning a B&B. Kim left her career as a hair salon owner to join him in everything – minus the spreadsheets.  Their dream to own and run a B&B came to fruition in Dec. 2018 when they purchased Fat Duck Inn in one of their favorite places to escape weekends in Seattle – Walla Walla wine country.
Fat Duck Inn isn’t a new Wall Walla Bed and Breakfast but rather one that been brought back to life after hanging up its no vacancy sign several years ago. In December 2018, the Gratzer’s purchased the historic home and spent the winter restoring it to its past grandeur. In April 2019, the no vacancy sign graced the Fat Duck Inn once more.
The Rooms at Fat Duck Inn
There are five rooms at this little Wall Walla Bed and Breakfast, each offering a different price point and sleeping options – king or queen beds, with some rooms including pull-out couches as well. During our visit we stayed in the Merganser Suite, which is located on the top floor, featuring a king size bed, en-suite private bath and shower, large sitting area complete with an electric fireplace, smart TV and pull-out sofa sleeper. Take a look at the room options to which one fits your taste and needs.

Food at Fat Duck Inn
Saving the best for last… The breakfast at this Wall Walla Bed and Breakfast = AMAZING.
Tim is a self-taught chef, one that had to meet very high expectations early on – his kids. Most evenings when their kids were young, Kim was managing the hair salon which left Tim in charge of dinner. While Mac & Cheese and hot dogs could have sufficed, he chose to kick things up and learned to cook, like really cook. After years of cooking for his family he branched out into catering private events and multi-course, wine paired dinners – just because he thought it would be fun. It’s fun to see his excitement each morning when he shares his breakfast creations with you…each meal made a lasting impression on my taste buds.
#gallery-0-10 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-10 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-10 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-10 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Taking breakfast sandwiches to the next level.
Avocado toast isn’t trendy, it’s delicious!
Tim doesn’t just make breakfast each morning, he caters it to your palate so you begin your day with a mouthwatering experience. You pick from a selection of items and he makes your meal to order that morning. His desire is to provide high-quality, distinctive breakfast menu items from locally sourced products reaffirms that breakfast is certainly the most important meal of the day, especially when you’re staying at Fat Duck Inn. You really need to try to stay for at least two nights, if only for the breakfast!!! (TIP: If the weather is nice, you must eat breakfast on the outdoor patio! How cute is this!!!)
The Bottomline for this Walla Walla Bed and Breakfast
When it comes to Walla Walla Bed and Breakfasts there are a handful to choose from and they range in price, location and amenities. Fat Duck Inn is the perfect option if you’re looking to stay in the historic downtown area. The remodeled 1928 Craftsman home is nestled in one of Walla Walla’s finest historic, tree-lined neighborhoods just moments to the downtown tasting rooms, restaurants and shopping.
The Gratzer’s offer an amazing, personal experience for guests. Including one of the best breakfasts I’ve had in a looooong time. The Inn itself is extremely well-kept, comfortable, impeccably remodeled and walking distance to all the downtown attractions. You should definitely look at staying here.
Every room at Fat Duck Inn has been impeccably remodeled.
  Added Bonus for Wine Lovers
The couple has visited every winery in Walla Walla, some more than once. In other words, if you need some suggestions on where to sip – they knows their Walla Walla wine and the tasting room experiences to expect.
  Just FYI
When visiting the Walla Walla wine region keep in mind that about a third of the wines in the Valley are produced on the Washington side of the AVA. With that said, the main area to stay and explore a larger portion of the Valley is the town of Walla Walla, at least for now. See Carpe Travel’s Walla Walla Wine Travel Guide for more ideas on things to do, suggested itineraries and background on the wine region.
Have you visited Walla Walla wine country? Where did you stay?  What did you think? Let us know in the comments.

Wineries to visit in the Kansas City area this summer
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The state of Missouri is a hot spot for wineries. According to a study from Wine & Vines published in 2018, there are around 8,391 wineries in North America. About 7,760 of those wineries are in the United States. California leads the country in wine production with 3,674 wineries. Missouri is one of 13 states that have more that 100 wineries with 125 locations. Kansas has 23 wineries. (Scroll to the bottom for a list of wineries in the KC area.)
History of Wine making in Missouri and Kansas
Before European immigrants settled in the Midwest, some Native American tribes had cultivated grapes. European settlers further developed these practices. Organized wine production in Missouri and Kansas took off in the early 19th century. German immigrants laid the groundwork for the wine industry, earning the nickname and reputation as the “Missouri Rhineland.” The immigrants helped create planting routes along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers — the thriving grape and wine culture spread west to as far as Russell in central Kansas. Later Italian immigrants moved to Missouri, and they offered their skills in transforming the Show Me State into a global wine center. In the mid-1880s, more wine was produced by volume in Missouri than any other state.
Stone Hill Wine Co. staff, 1890
In the 19th century, a German immigrant hub in Hermann, Missouri became an epicenter of wine activity.  Stone Hill Winery in Hermann became the second largest winery in the nation in 1880, and it was the third largest winery in the world. Stone Hill shipped a million barrels of wine by the turn of the 20th century. Its wines won awards at world fairs in Vienna in 1873 and Philadelphia in 1876. In the present, the eastern Missouri city continues to be a destination site for wine enthusiasts. Hermann produces a third of Missouri’s wine.
The prohibition era forced the shutdown and abandonment of all Missouri wineries with the exception of the one at St. Stanislaus Seminary, in Florissant. The state permitted the seminary to produce sacramental wines. The wine industry in Missouri didn’t recover for decades. Kansas also struggled to bring back a wine industry following prohibition. The state was home to Carrie Nation, a radical and pioneer of the early temperance movement. Kansas was the first state in the union to pass statewide prohibition in 1881.
Despite the alcohol ban, winemakers in Kansas secretly continued to ferment juices. In 1900, just twenty years after prohibition in the Sunflower State, “The Grape in Kansas” documented vineyards in thousands of acres of Kansas land. The state horticultural society published the report. It further found people routinely planted, grew, and harvested grapes — and most of those grapes ended up in bootleg operations in Kansas or were sold across the state line to Missourians.
Decades after Prohibition
Stone Hill Winery in Hermann finally reopened in 1965. Winemakers in the ‘60s and ‘70s reestablished Missouri vineyards and wineries along the Mississippi River and throughout the state.
Missouri had the first area recognized as a federally designated American Viticultural Area with the Augusta AVA acknowledged on June 20, 1980. The state now has four AVAs. In 1983, Hermann earned the designation of an AVA. The Ozark Highlands AVA, created in 1987, includes parts of Gasconade, Texas, and Dent Counties. All three smaller AVAs are within the Ozark Mountain AVA, which covers southern Missouri below the Missouri River, northwestern Arkansas, and northeastern Oklahoma.
Missouri’s climate makes it an excellent place for handling grapes. Long, hot summers, plenty of sun exposure, and thin yet rocky soil are all ideal factors for cultivating the fruit. Moderate temperatures allow for the natural cellaring of wine.
A bottle of Norton wine sits next to what is believed to be a 170-year-old Norton/Cynthiana grapevine in Hermann, MO | Wikipedia
The most prominent grape variety grown in Missouri is the Cynthiana/Norton. Norton is the official grape of the State of Missouri and is considered the cornerstone of the state’s wine industry. Historians believe Dr. Daniel Norton first cultivated the grape in Richmond, Virginia during the early 19th century. He developed the cultivar from seeds from a now extinct variety (Cynthiana may be a mutation of the original Norton). The grape variety is now grown in the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic States, and in California.
Other grapes grown in Missouri include: Native American grapes, Concord and Catawba; and French-American hybrids, such as Vignoles, Seyval, and Chambourcin.
Missouri has more than 1,600 acres planted in grapes. In 2008, sellers sold more than 888,000 gallons of Missouri wine. The wineries are supported by more than 400 local vineyards. A large portion of the wineries are considered small “mom and pop” shops. The four largest wineries are: the St. James Winery, Stone Hill Winery, Les Bourgeois Winery, and Meramec Vineyards Winery.
The state has five wine trails, which host wine events and festivals year round. Legislators passed a state tax on wine in 1984, which is now at 12 cents per gallon. The tax supports the state Missouri Wine and Grape Program, which does research and marketing to support wine production. The state hired a viticulturist to assist in revitalizing the wine industry. Wine in the state has helped spearhead tourism in communities both small and large.
Missouri State University in Springfield has a program dedicated to teaching students about careers in wine. The Missouri State University’s Mountain Grove cellars is a university-owned and operated wine grape producing vineyard. The University of Missouri’s Grape and Wine Institute does research on winemaking practices in Missouri and the Midwest.
Popular Wineries & Vineyards in the Kansas City Area
The Kansas City metro has a wide variety of wineries and vineyards — some are even considered haunted. Many of the wineries in the area double as venues for weddings and special occasions. Most locations have tasting rooms or other amenities. The metro offers several wine tours, classes, and tools to procure the perfect drink.
Amigoni Urban Winery: produces handcrafted wines in the Stockyards District of Kansas City’s Historic West  Bottoms. The team focuses on traditional European grape varietals, such as Chardonnay and Viognier. The wines are often produced from grapes grown in the northern portion of California’s Central Valley. The Amigoni Family Vineyard was established in 2000. Michael Amigoni took up winemaking as a hobby and then fell in love with the craft and wanted to start a business. After planting some vines, the family decided to open a commercial winery. In 2011, renovations began on the current tasting room, which is located in the Daily Drover Telegram Building across the street from the original Amigoni location. In 2017, the owners moved production from a nearby facility to the Telegram building. Tasting of 5 wines costs $8 per person. The winery is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 11:00am to 6:00pm. It also opens Friday from 11:00am to 7:pm and on Sunday from noon to 5:00pm.
Aubrey Vineyards in Overland Park: it all started back in 2010 with the purchase of approximately 200 acres in Overland Park. The land was still in use by farmers. After a trip to Napa, a vision unfolded to ready the land to grow grapes, develop wines, and use the space as a venue for events. Workers plant the grapes just south of River Ridge. The land has loamy soil and is low in clay content, which is ideal for grape vines. The high elevation allows for breezes to go through the vines and ward off diseases. The slopes and porous loam keep the soil well-drained. Aubrey Vineyards has a tasting room and a store in downtown Overland Park. With summer here, Aubrey Vineyards has introduced the June wine of the month: Trail Rider White. It’s meant for cookouts, grilling brats, or enjoying an evening on the patio. The wine has notes of granny smith apple and crisp pear.
Barley Bus Tour: for those looking for a history lesson and have several hours to kill in the morning or afternoon. The tour takes guests to breweries, wineries, and distilleries. It also includes history about Kansas City and the surrounding areas. Guests will be treated with alcohol samples, water, and snacks. The brewery tour lasts about 4 hours, and the winery tours take about 5 hours. There is a long list of places you might visit on a tour which includes: Cinder Block, Boulevard Brewing CO., Crane Brewing, Union Horse, Pirtle Winery, Stone Pillar Vineyard & Winery, and Jowler Creek Vineyard & Winery. You can find the full list on the Barley Bus Tour website.
Belvoir Inn & Winery, Liberty Missouri
Belvoir Winery and Inn: the historic property in Liberty is considered haunted by many. The venue offers free wine tastings, paranormal investigations, and it hosts weddings. One wine called “Boo’s” is a fortified dessert wine with heavy layers of dark berries and chocolate created by the Norton grape and mixed with Missouri brandy. Belvoir also offers more traditional red and white wines. The Odd Fellows’ Home complex was built circa 1900. Three buildings from the original property remain: the Administration Building, the Old Folks Building, and the Old Hospital. Guests and staff have reported hearing unusual noises and seeing strange sights on the property. It formerly served as an orphanage and a retirement home, which this may add to the spooky lore. The Belvoir recently opened up a nine-room bed and breakfast on the third floor of the main building. The winery in Liberty could be one of the only spots in the Kansas City metro where you can share a wine of glass with a ghost or other lingering specter.
Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant: the winery produces around 700,000 cases of wine each year. Most of the grapes come from California, Washington, and Oregon. Cooper’s Hawk seeks for the best fruit to produce the best wine. The winemaker is selective about picking fruits and is sensitive to the time of year. In some parts of the country, seasonal conditions have an impact on taste. Cooper’s Hawk has received more than 500 wine awards from various local, national, and international wine competitions. The company has a wine club for members. It includes an updated list of wines each month, discounts, birthday rewards, and invitations to member-only events.
Fence Stile Vineyards in Excelsior Springs: the winery has wine caves. Guests can tour the facilities, enjoy wine tastings and other beverages, and purchase merchandise. Guests can enjoy a glass of wine on the patio or in the indoor tasting room. There is also a fire pit outside that’s meant to act as a gathering place for friends and family. Private tastings and tours of the winery and wine caves are available. The vineyard has planted 8 different varietals on the property.
Holy-Field Vineyard & Winery in Bachelor, Kansas: winemakers use grapes harvested on 14 acres. There are ten grape varieties that produce 19 distinct wines. Holy-Field has earned awards nationally and internationally. The wine venue also hosts a number of entertainment events throughout the year, including Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre shows, Mayfest, the Summertime Music Series, and Oktoberfest. The vineyard, banquet hall, and gazebo are available for weddings, receptions, and other events by reservation.
KC Wine Co: the boutique winery brings in its fair share of sweet fruits for wines. The Barrel Room at KC Wine Co. is a vintage-inspired space meant for events. From private parties to large group tastings, 100 people can fit in the climate controlled room comfortably. For more information head to the KC Wine Co. website where you can schedule a tour or receive pricing information.
KC Wineworks: established in 2014, the winery has taken in awards over the past few years. The winery uses 100% locally sourced grapes from Missouri. Wine tastings are available. Reservations are required for parties of 6 or more people with a maximum of 20 people. Wine tastings come with views of the oak barrels used in the process.
Ladoga Ridge Winery in Smithville: founded in 2011, the winery is nestled just north of Kansas City. It offers wine tastings during normal business hours. Tastings may vary during special events. The venue regularly hosts concerts. It is a family-owned and operated winery and vineyard. It is one of the more picturesque vineyards in the area with trees, sprawling land, pastures, and other natural delights. Wine enthusiasts are encouraged to drink handcrafted wines from the winery and enjoy the scenery.
Mallinson Vineyard & Hall in Sugar Creek, Missouri: guests can stay in the newly remolded Norton House that overlooks the vineyard there. There is an outdoor wedding site with a large patio for guests. The small local winery has a shorter list of wines, but it has a beautiful and romantic vista for those willing to take on a day trip or other adventure.
Rowe Ridge Vineyard & Winery: the vineyard and winery are located north of the Kansas Speedway and the Legends shopping center. Owners Marc and Pamela Rowe planted the first vines in 2005. They grow 9 varieties of hybrid and American native grapes. The tasting room was built in 2012. 10 wines are available for sampling. The deck and tasting room are handicap accessible. There is also a gift shop and spot to fish. Wine flights are $8 and include six to eight wines and a souvenir logo wine glass to take home. The owners are home most days to lead vineyard tours and answer questions on grape cultivation. Groups of 6 or more are encouraged to make reservations.
Stonehaus Farms in Lee’s Summit: founded in 1996 the family operated winery intends to have a warm and inviting family atmosphere. The tasting room was updated to showcase the original “Stone Wall” that gave the winery the Stonehaus Farms’ name. The venue is open to weddings and other special events. The website for Stonehaus Farms regularly posts updates and information about upcoming events. The venue hosts a wine and paint class on Wednesday nights by RSVP.
Stone Pillar Vineyard & Winery: claims to be Johnson County’s original farm winery. It is located southwest of Kansas City in Olathe. The Hoff family has farmed the land since before the Civil War. George and Brandi Hoff wanted to start a winery after taking a vacation to Canada to see Niagara Falls in 2004. They planted the first vines in 2007. The family works closely with their own vines and their local growers to ensure a high quality hand-picked Kansas wine.
Top Hat Winery in Independence: a family-owned winery located on the historic Independence Square. The location offers a fun atmosphere for guests. The space is meant for both novice wine drinkers and connoisseurs. Top Hat Winery also offers hard ciders along with its line of handcrafted wines. The winery offers red, white, fruit, and specialty wines. The business operates in the building formerly occupied by Elena’s Catering and Carryout. There is no on-site vineyard. The owners purchase grapes and berries from all over Missouri and beyond. The fruit is then processed into juice and fermented in-house. The name “Top Hat” comes from a love of hats and a focus on premier products. As a domestic winery, 85 percent of the wine Top Hat manufactures must be grown in Missouri. For the Concord grapes, the owners travel to a premier region in western New York.
