Welp. This truck is delivering a huge scrap metal dumpster. That whole red part on the back is to be set my my late father's workshop and all the accumulated rusty junk will be put inside (our job) and hauled away. Say "Goodbye," rusty farm equipment! Old drainage pipes, bent up livestock chute! Various worrisome empty (we hope) tanks!

My husband is setting aside a few 'interesting' pieces that he thinks can be upcycled in some way, but a LOT of it will be gone - and I'll be relieved. Son busted his butt all week getting extra mowing, tree pruning, and weedwhacking done so that we could access all this stuff. Yesterday evening I was his 'spotter' as he set the step ladder in the bed of the pickup (to get as much height as possible) and took down tree limbs that were in the way of the tractor. I watched with my heart in my throat, but it all went fine. No matter how old he gets, I guess I'll never stop worrying about him!

   My son and I started de-junking this basement mess last summer - and then took a long pause because he was very much overworked at school. Last week we got back to it. Mostly him, actually; I got him started and then left him to it. I need a new picture; it looks SO MUCH better, now. What to do when someone dies is not a common conversation or top at a dinner table.  Although uncommon for conversation every family should breach this subject.  In our country according to the United Nations World Population Prospects report, approximately 7,452 people die every day in the United States.  It gets more grim as you will see.  There are nearly 16,214 murders each year which breaks down to 5 murders per 100,000 people.  In addition to these dark facts their are approximately 135 suicide death's per day.  Although all of this sounds bleak it is a fact of life that many of these things will affect our families.  It is important to understand what to do when a death happens in your family.

As one of the leading crime scene cleaners in the country we see families grieving with death on a daily basis.  From the thousands of suicide, murder, and even natural death scenes in homes we have cleaned, we can assure you that call us is one of the last things on anyones mind.  Most families are in a state of shock when they find out someone died and they will oftentimes not worry about the crime scene cleanup company being called.  Heck, sometimes they don't even know services like ours exist, and in part that is why we are writing this.  Although we may not be the first thing you should do when someone dies we should be in the top 5.  But for this article here are our top 3 things to do when you discover a family member has died in their home.

First, contact the authorities.  This is usually calling the police to determine no foul play.  In most cases this doesn't take the Police very long.  They will determine by checking the scene for any struggle and our oddities in the way the person died.  Bullet wounds would mean murder or suicide and would of course result in further investigation.  However most of the time the means of death is ruled by the medical examiners.

Second, call a crime scene cleanup company.  After death cleanup is available in many cities across the United States.  We service over 2,000 locations and many other companies do as well. It may seem like an odd thing to do next but you will need this blood and bodily fluids removed as soon as possible.  Other family members may still live in the home, or may be staying there for the funeral.  At the very least it needs done before further damage is done to the structure of the property or infectious disease spreads.

Third, call friends and family of the dearly departed.  Let them know what has happened and let yourself and them gieve.  You lost a loved one, a member of your tribe.  A person you laughed with and hugged and now cry with one last time.  Grieving is important in death.  Even when we do crime scene cleanup, suicide cleanup, or any other kind of cleaning after a death at a home.  We will often cry with a relative if they break down, we will too.  Its a sad day, and we understand it.
