Where is MMA in New England heading?

There was a time back in 2006, when I still had my three children living at home (or in college) that we would plan the two hour trip from Whitefield, NH down to Manchvegas, NH, to watch Reality Fighting.  (Whitefield is a lovely quiet town about twenty minutes north of nowhere!)  We were fans of the game, and even though we didn’t know anybody on the fight card, we just wanted to enjoy an evening of MMAction.  Heck, there were even a few times we drove four hours down from Whitefield  to Plymouth, MA just to watch a good night of fights and we’d leave and drive all the way home that same night.  Ticket prices ranged from $40 to $100, and we sometimes had two or three car loads of us.  We were in an economic boom, gas was two bucks a gallon, and we all were going to have a good time.  And back then we would mark our calendar four weeks out and buy our tickets a month ahead, not at the door.  Ah, the times they are a changing… I still remember when me and my friends would just get one of those best reflex boxing reflex balls and just smack it around all day long... Good old times.
A quick check of the year 2007 tells me we had approximately MMA 29 fight cards in New England spread over eight different promotions.  (I may be off a bit, depending on the accuracy of my sources.)  The only three promotions that are still in the picture today are Reality Fighting, The new and improved Combat Zone, and WCF.  Gone are the FFP, EFI, WFL, and the few others from that era.
Fast forward to 2010, where New England hosted 56 different MMA fight cards, including UFC, King of the Cage, and Bellator.  Currently, New England has somewhere between eleven and fourteen different promotions operating solely in the region, not including the big events that make occasional visits to our area.  During the months of April, May, June of 2011, New England played host to 21 different MMA events, two of which were cancelled last minute for reasons that are not important right now.  That means that in the second quarter of this year (3 months), New England saw 19 MMA events.  
I speak with promoters on a daily basis and it is an understatement that nearly every one is really worried.  Most promoters agree that the break even point for an MMA event lies somewhere between 700 and 800 in ticket sales.  Ticket prices have held steady or in some cases come down a bit.  Gas prices are very high.  Attendance at many shows is rapidly declining.  We are in a recession that compares well to the Great Depression of the 1930’s.  Most promoters and MMAdvocates believe that N.E. can comfortably support five or six promotions.
“Since Massachusetts regulated MMA, it has added around $10,000 to the cost of putting on a show”, says Mark Vaz of American Fight Organization.  “That used to be our profit!” AFO Promoter Pete DiLorenzo shares his concerns as well.  “This region can maybe accommodate five promotions.  This is getting scary.”
The folks at Reality Fighting have carved out a nice nitch at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut, but it came with a lot of hard work and business planning.  I know Kipp Kollar and I talked several years ago about this and back then he was trying to get his show into the casinos.  Reality now has some natural insulation built in around themselves.  The last three shows we have covered for them at Mohegan Sun seem to have had between 3,900 and 5,000 fans in attendance!  Right now they seem to have a tight grip on the state of Connecticut.
Out in Western Mass, Premier Fight Championships is approaching their one year anniversary.  Although I personally have only covered one of their events, their promotion seems to be of high quality.  Promoter Karyn Wesch talks of her business plan and likes to spread out her events every ten or twelve weeks, therefore giving the fans of the area time in between events.  She has also done a nice job developing a pool of fighters from Connecticut and Western Mass as well as a real good fan base.  Their last event was back in the beginning of April and they have their next event scheduled for the end of July in Springfield.  But on the weekend previous to Premier’s July event, Warrior Nation has an event right around the Western Mass Corner in Chicopee.  Western Mass has gone 3 ½ months between events and now many of the fans may have to choose between the two events that fall only one week apart.  I wonder if these two promotions could have spread their events out a bit how many fans wound make financial room for both…
Southeastern Mass and Rhode Island have four promotions locking antlers in a battle of promotional survival.  (Geographically the promotions and their fan bases are real close.)  CES, AFO, CFX, and Cage Titans are all operating in generally the same Eastern Mass / Rhode Island locality.  We cover their events regularly and we, at NorthEast MMA have noticed a drop in attendance at these events.  There may be several contributing factors, but ultimately the promoters know that at least part their fans are being divided up between competing promotions and events.  Staff Writer Norma Walsh last covered a CFX event in May and despite 21 fights on the card the attendance was real low.  Another CFX event in June was cancelled the day of the weigh ins. I have personally covered the last few CES events, and I have noticed declining attendance.  The last CES event had one of the most stacked fight cards we’ve seen in a while and it was not nearly as well attended as previous shows.  Although I am still waiting for the State of MA to e-mail to me the actual attendance at the shows (it is a matter of public record, but speed is not a priority), I just know from being at the events in MA that attendance is down.  At the most recent Cage Titans event attendance seemed to be around 800 to 900, which is right in that break even point and Mike Polvere put up a real nice fight card in a good quality venue.  The AFO has been selling out their Holiday Inn venue with regularity, but several recent shows, despite real good matchmaking, have not come close to those glory days’ numbers.
Remember, too, that it isn’t enough for a promoter to break even; these folks are putting in hundreds of hours and risking $20,000 or more to put on an event. Breaking even is not the goal!
The Combat Zone has been under the control of Dave George and his staff for several years now and they have found a home in Rockingham Park in Southern NH.  They have a great reputation amongst the fight fans and fighters alike.  They also have insulated themselves from the promotional competition by running a small promotion in a specific area and basically have made “The Rock” their home.  
But still, Boston’s North Shore / NH South / Southern Maine (Maine has just regulated MMA) is becoming another hot spot of activity.  The Global Fight League has been there for three years, WCF has just thrown their hat back in the ring, AFO has several Club Lido shows coming up, and CFX ran a show in Southern Maine back in April.  It looks like we have at least five promotions trying to carve out a piece of MMA pie just north of Boston.
I have been to several WCF shows back in 2008 and 2009, and it seems to me that those events were at or near sell outs at the 4,000 seat Shriners Auditorium in Wilmington, MA.  Their most recent event was a few weeks back and I would estimate that there were 750 fans in attendance.  WCF matchmaker Dan Bonnell estimated 800, and cites competition from other promotions as well as the Boston Bruins Stanley Cup run as part of the problem.  Either way, this was not a real profitable event…
There are many variables to the MMA Promotional puzzle: Quality of Venue, Fight Card, Location, Ticket price, Number of events in the area, Driving time, Etc.  Each promoter is proud of one or more aspect of his or her promotion.  Each promotion seems to focus on his specialty.  Scott Millette of the GFL is really proud of his Technology, and rightfully so.  Karyn Wesch is pleased with her loyal stable of fighters, and she should be.  Reality fighting super hero Joe Cuff is a great matchmaker, as is Mark Vaz (AFO) and Mike Polvere!
I would ask our readers to post and let the promoters know what it is that the fan wants to see. How many events is too many?  Best Venue? Length of a fight card?  Please be helpful (and kind) as our promoters are the ones laying out the money and taking the risks to put on these events.

Capita che le cose ti sorprendano. Senza aspettartelo.
Ti raggiungono all'improvviso mentre cercavi tutt'altro. Come Serendipity, il film con John Cusack. Ecco. 4 anni fa, mi aspettavo una bella esperienza, di certo non che Giffoni mi cambiasse la vita diventando la mia oasi di felicità, con tutto il suo bagaglio di bellezza e amicizie e gioie. E invece così e stato e non posso farne a meno. Poi quest'anno, ringraziando il cielo e Francesco Alò, sono stato scelto insieme a Simona Genovese per rappresentare la Masterclass del GFF all'Adelaide International Youth Film Festival.
Adelaide, una ridente cittadina in Sud dell’Australia, ricca di lino e seta e di barbabietole da zucchero (immagino, tanto quelle c’erano dovunque). Avete presente dov'è l'Australia? Avete presente com'è l'Australia? No? Ecco. Ve lo dico io. È lontana e bellissima, ci si arriva con 26/28 ore di aereo (più quelle interminabili di attesa in aeroporti sparsi per il globo) e ha il cielo così blu che sembra un filtro di instagram, ma è #nofilter. Pensavo fosse un viaggio, e invece è stato molto di più. L’AIYFF è al suo primo anno, un festival bambino, che ispirandosi al Giffoni e all'entusiasmo dei giurati, vuole sì premiare i talenti emergenti e già consolidati nel cinema e nel videomaking, ma soprattutto spingere le nuove generazioni ad afferrare prima lo smartphone, poi una camera, poi un set intero e creare degli audiovisivi, volti proprio a quel pubblico.
L'esperienza è totalizzante: la giuria composta da una ventina di ragazzi dagli 11 anni in poi) provenienti dagli USA, l'Italia (appunto), la Nuova Zelanda, Australia e South Australia, (oltre a tante scuole provenienti da tutto il mondo) vive tutta in un meraviglioso shore sulla spiaggia, in casette piene di cibo (ci hanno trattato moooolto bene, mamma, tranquilla), con l'odore dell'oceano (in cui addirittura io, noioso dei noiosi, ho fatto un bagno) e tantissimo verde, permettendoci di convivere e conoscerci meglio, con le nostre differenze culturali e d'età. L'epicentro del festival è la GU Film House, un cinema all’avanguardia nel cuore di Adelaide, con sale allo stato dell'arte e una zona relax per noi della giuria, con giochi da tavolo, libri e tavoli su cui scrivere e disegnare liberamente, tra una proiezione e l'altra.
Tra i lavori più meritevoli del festival, splendidi corti scolastici come Detention! (Di Neil Browne) e Caffeine (realizzato dalla Pembroke), così come Bus Story (Jorge Judice) favola romantica ambientata su un autobus, che ha visto anche un riconoscimento della giuria. I lungometraggi sono stati una sorpresa: l'interessante Zach's Ceremony (vincitore assoluto, ma prima dell'annuncio uno sventurato presenter Italiano ha deciso di bissare gli Oscar annunciando La La Land, indovinate un po' chi è) ma anche e soprattutto i commoventi The Bachelors e Fanny's Journey, che avevamo già visto trionfare nei Generator +13 a Giffoni.
L'Adelaide International Youth Film Festival è un diamante grezzo destinato a splendere sempre di più, con la forza di un gruppo di lavoro, composto dalla direttrice artistica Chloe Gardner, dai responsabili giuria Emma Johnson e tanti altri, che ci hanno supportato, aiutato, portato in giro per scoprire la città ed esperienze speciali come la finale del campionato di Football con in gara gli Adelaide Crows, vista direttamente nell'Adelaide Oval Stadium, per respirare la gioia e il tifo con i cittadini e i tifosi. Partita persa, ma eravamo felici comunque: cercando la vittoria, abbiamo trovato comunque la gioia, senza aspettarcelo. Come ora che siamo tornati a casa, stanchi di Jet Lag, ancora con quel blu negli occhi, con nel cuore tante persone in più e un pezzettino di noi lasciato in un altro posto del mondo.
Grazie Giffoni, Grazie Adelaide.

It happens, things surprise you. Without you expecting it.
They reach you suddenly while you're looking for anything else. Like Serendipity, the movie with John Cusack. Right. 4 years ago, I was expecting a beautiful experience, certainly not Giffoni to change my life and become my oasis of happiness, with all its beauty and friendships and joys. And so it was instead and I can not help it. Then, this year, thank God and Francesco Alò, I was chosen with Simona Genovese to represent the GFF Masterclass at the Adelaide International Youth Film Festival.
Adelaide, a lovely town in South Australia, rich in linen and silk and sugar beets (I imagine, that’s what I studied for years). Do you know where Australia is? Do you know how Australia is? No? Here it is. I tell you so. It is far away and beautiful, you arrive there after 26/28 hours of airplane (plus those endless waits in airports scattered around the globe) and a blue sky that looks like an instagram filter, but it is #nofilter. I thought it was a trip, and instead it was a lot more. AIYFF is at its first year, a little newborn festival, inspired by Giffoni and the enthusiasm of the jurors, so it wants to reward emerging and already consolidated talents in cinema and videomaking, but above all the goal is to push new generations to grab the smartphone first, then a camera, then a whole set and create audiovisuals, aimed at that same audience.
The experience is fulfilling: the jury of about twenty young members (from 11 years onwards) coming from the USA, Italy (here I am), New Zealand, Australia and South Australia (as well as many schools from all over the world) all lives in a wonderful shore on the beach, in cottages with plenty of food (they treated us moooolto well, mom, quiet), with the smell of the ocean (where even me, the most boring person on earth, took a bath) and so much green, allowing us to live together and to know us better, with our cultural differences and ages. The centre of the festival is the GU Film House, a modern cinema in the heart of Adelaide, with state-of-the-art cinemas and a jury relax lounge with games, books and tables to write and draw freely, between sessions.
Among the festival's most deserving works, beautiful school shorts like Detention! (Neil Browne) and Caffeine (by Pembroke), as well as Bus Story (Jorge Judice) romantic fable set on a bus, which also won a jury award. The feature films were a surprise: the interesting Zach's Ceremony (absolute winner, but before being awarded, a dumb Italian presenter decided to announce La La Land, guess who he was) but also and above all, The moving The Bachelors and Fanny's Journey, which already won Generators +13 at Giffoni.
The Adelaide International Youth Film Festival is a rough diamond destined to shine more and more, with the force of a team composed by the artistic director Chloe Gardner, by the Jury Coordinator Emma Johnson and many others, who have supported us, helped su, wandered around to discover the city and special experiences such as the final of the Football Championship with the Adelaide Crows game, directly seen at the Adelaide Oval Stadium, to breathe joy and cheer of citizens and fans. We lost the game, but we were happy anyway: looking for victory, we still found joy, without expecting it. Just as we came home, tired of Jet Lag, still with that blue in our eyes, with so many more people in the heart and a little piece of us left in another place in the world. Thank you Giffoni, Thank you Adelaide.

Ice cream has come a long way since the Good Humor truck. There’s nothing wrong with a simple cup or cone, but these days, you’re just as likely to find the ultimate creamy-cold treat rolled, sandwiched, flash-frozen or cloaked inches-thick in toppings right before before your eyes.
Bay Area scoop shops are leading some high-concept trends these days, and the variety of bold, Instagram-worthy creations is enough to give you brain-freeze — in a good way. As it turns out, the history of American ice cream has always been tied to a sense of innovation, says Amy Ettinger, ice cream historian and author of the new book, “Sweet Spot: An Ice Cream Binge Across America (Dutton, $26).

In the book, the Santa Cruz-based author delves into the legacy of extreme ice cream, starting with our Founding Fathers, who fancied oyster ice cream (yes, really), to the post-Prohibition novelty boom that gave birth to Eskimo Pies and Polar Cream Wafers, and on to Ben & Jerry’s, with its signature swirls and mix-ins.
“There’s always been this element of showmanship when it comes to ice cream,” Ettinger says. “It’s not just something you eat, it’s something you experience.”
Perhaps no Bay Area scoop shop is more synonymous with invention than San Francisco-based Smitten Ice Cream. To churn the ultimate from-scratch, made-to-order ice cream, founder Robyn Sue Fisher teamed up with a retired aerospace engineer to build a machine that flash-freezes ice cream at the time of sale using liquid nitrogen.
Today, Fisher’s Brrr machines and their signature fog fill seven shops in the Bay Area, including outposts in Lafayette, Oakland and San Jose, and yield ice cream with an ultra-rich, creamy texture — every time. Because Fisher believes that ice cream should be pure and made only from high-quality ingredients, she works with local and organic farms and purveyors to source everything.
“Ice cream should embody the definition of taste and wholesomeness,” she says. “That’s why we hand-churn every batch, so it’s fresh and we know exactly what’s in it.”

But even discerning foodies can’t deny the joy that comes with a smattering of rainbow sprinkles or the Benihana-like show that goes on at Icicles’ five Bay Area locations. Icicles specializes in Thai-style rolled ice cream that is mixed by hand on large ice pans, then flattened into strips and rolled into cylinders in front of you. Toppings — everything from sugary cereal to gummies — are free and limitless, a perk that contributes to the shop’s mega popularity.
Like Icicles, the soft-serve giant Milkcow is also a cultural export — this time, from South Korea, where the popular franchise originated. At the busy Fremont and Castro Valley shops, co-owners and brothers Alex and Gordon Lai top the signature soft, milk-flavored ice cream with fantastical sweets, including raw honeycomb, cotton candy and the giant, wafflelike egg puffs that they remember as a popular street food item during their childhood years in Hong Kong.
“The quality and taste of our products are of the utmost importance, but our mission is also to create fond memories and bring smiles to people’s faces,” Gordon Lai says.
Especially when it reminds you of being a kid.
“At the end of the day, people can say whatever they want about purity and ingredients, but ice cream is about being transported to childhood,” Ettinger says. “Sometimes that means having something unexpected like a celery sorbet or being able to put whatever you want on your scoop of ice cream, because that’s what you did with your family —  or it’s what you longed to do.”

Churned-to-order
1. Smitten Ice Cream
These small, brightly-lit scoop shops specialize in ultra-premium ice cream that is made to order using founder Robyn Sue Fisher’s liquid nitrogen Brrr machine. Due to the smaller-sized crystals achieved with liquid nitrogen, Smitten’s ice cream has a super-creamy, smooth texture. Flavors have a culinary focus, change seasonally and are often gourmet updates on classics, including Brown Sugar with Cinnamon Shortbread, Blueberry Lavender and Strawberry White Balsmatic.
Must-order: Chocolate ($5-$6) may sound simple, but it’s actually a decadently rich ganache made with TCHO’s 60 percent cacao chocolate.

2. Crafts Creamery
This brightly lit shop opened two years ago and offers a variety of made-to-order (via liquid nitrogen) options: organic ice cream made with the good stuff from Straus Family Creamery, coconut-based nondairy frozen dessert and granitas. Choose your flavor — there are over 20, including matcha green tea, caramel latte and mint chocolate chip — and any mix-ins and watch as they pop it into a blender-meets-metal-bowl device, squirt it with liquid nitrogen and freeze it in minutes. Complain about the high-ish prices ($5.36-$9.69 plus toppings) all you want, but this place has lots of seating and accommodates birthday groups at no extra charge. 3. Icicles

Thailand’s rolled ice cream has hit the Bay Area, beginning at Icicles’ flagship shop in San Jose’s Willow Glen neighborhood. Choose from 11 flavors, including PB&J or Bravocado, or ask the staff to create your favorite combo by mixing the original custard base (made from farm-fresh eggs, milk, sugar and cream) with your favorite toppings. They’ll chop and flatten everything before your eyes on large ice pans, then scrape it off into pretty, finished 3-inch rolls. Unlimited toppings add to the fun. Also available: dairy-free “fruit roll ups.”

An unassuming shop tucked inside Chinatown, Freezing Point Creamery is a tiny, cash-only joint where you can choose from five rolled ice cream flavors: strawberry, mango, purple yam, red bean, cookies and cream, or matcha. They also offer housemade ice cream in several nontraditional flavors, including wasabi, durian and ginger. Toppings also available.
Must-order: Try the purple yam ($7), made with real bits of yam. Enjoy it with a cup of the warming — and popular — ginger milk tea ($4.95), made with organic whole milk and ginger juice.

Soft-serve, with a twist
5. Milkcow
This South Korean export boasts creamy, not-too-sweet milk-flavored soft ice cream. Its facility in Southern California sources milk from free-range cows that are fed Italian ryegrass. Drizzles include various syrups, such as pistachio and honey — sourced from Marshall’s Farm in American Canyon — and fanciful toppings, like locally made macarons, waffle-sized egg puffs, and housemade cotton candy.
Must-order: Raw honeycomb with honey drizzle ($4-$6) offers the sweetness and slight crumble of real honey, the perfect complement to this ultra-creamy, milky soft ice cream.

This two-year-old Alameda ice-cream-on-a-stick shop specializes in housemade gelato and sorbetto pops ($3.65-$3.80 plus toppings). The sorbetto is made in-house from fresh or pureed fruit (everything from guava and passion fruit to mango and peach), water and sugar while the gelato base comes from a supplier and includes whole milk and sugar. The pops are not too sweet, which allows for layering drizzles — milk, white or dark chocolate — and toppings, such as ground nuts, chocolate chips, coconut flakes or rainbow sprinkles.

The concept at this kiosk inside downtown San Jose’s hip SoFA Market is similar: Choose your flavor, your drizzle — in addition to the chocolate drizzles, they also offer sweetened condensed milk — and your toppings, and stand back as the artists make your dream a sugar-laden reality. Milk and Wood handcrafts the pops daily in up to 25 flavors, including chocolate hazelnut, mango strawberry, and cookies and cream, and offers crushed pretzels and chocolate shavings among other toppings. Everything’s made in small batches, so they often run out by evening, especially on weekends.

Sure, there are a lot of creameries in the Bay Area doing unique flavors, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t include this Portland export, which is already drawing 45-minute waits outside its new (and first) San Francisco scoop shop. Salt and Straw partners with local purveyors to create seasonal and unusual flavors that are OMG-good, like Arbequina Olive Oil, Pear and Blue Cheese, Avocado and Strawberry Sherbet, and Green Apple and Wasabi Flowers.
Talk about extreme: This month, Salt and Straw is featuring limited-edition ice creams made from food waste in San Francisco. Flavors include The Roxie Road (made with leftover popcorn from the Mission’s Roxie Theatre) and Roasted Sunchoke Mock Apple Pie (made with organic but misshapen sunchokes from San Francisco’s Imperfect Produce).
Must-order: Tough call. Seriously. We can’t help you. We dream of the Woodblock Chocolate at the SF shop, but the Olive Oil and Lemon Custard is also off-the-charts good.

How One Home Sale May Have Wrecked the Obamas’ Summer Plans

Where will Barack Obama and his family vacation this summer? If recent history is any indication, it would be Martha’s Vineyard.
This upscale, beachy island off Massachusetts has served as their summer vacation spot for seven of Barack’s eight years as president—as well as long before and after he was in office. Yet if the Obamas are hoping to return to one place they rented that became known as the “summer White House,” they may have to look elsewhere—because news has just surfaced that this home has been sold.
Dubbed “Chilmark house” for the lovely, sparsely populated town it resides in, this 7,000-square-foot, six-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom modern mansion served as the Obamas’ vacation rental in 2013. Located on 9.5 acres of land, it’s plenty private, with access to a secluded beach, basketball court, heated infinity pool, and private dock.

In June, the house was sold for $18 million. That may seem high, but the real estate listing trumpeted its famous past, calling it a “presidential paradise,” which might have helped attract a buyer.
While the home’s new owners might have plans to rent it out, they might not—even to a former first family.

Granted, if the Obamas are indeed returning to Martha’s Vineyard this summer, they’ve likely nailed down a new vacation rental already. After all, anyone who visits such a popular summer retreat like Martha’s Vineyard knows that the most coveted homes are booked up fast.

Why Every Salesperson Must Be a Master Storyteller

It started way back in high school when I was the editor of the school paper. I even had a couple stints at a local Polish American newspaper and WIVB-TV in Buffalo, New York, before I graduated.
These internships made me realize just how much I loved finding, writing, and telling stories. So, when the time came, I enrolled in the Journalism program at Emerson College in Boston, MA. (#1 Journalism school in the country, woot!)
But as you’ll see today, my job title doesn’t include journalist, editor, or even the word content. Over the years, I have found myself in a sales role, but I’ve also learned that my storytelling skills are as essential to sales as they would be to any literary career I could’ve entered. 
The Speed of Meaningful Conversations
In my opinion, there’s no better way to learn how to become a storyteller than journalism school.  
The program started with writing for print, then moved onto radio (which was awesome because that involved not only editing copy but editing recorded audio interviews) and then moved onto TV, which meant also being a master at shooting video and editing video.  
In broadcast, the goal was to tell a compelling story in about a minute and 30 seconds, and sometimes, only 30 seconds or less, but real, meaningful conversations and interviews don’t happen in a minute and 30 seconds or less. That would be weird.
They take place over the course of 30 minutes, an hour, and sometimes even more, depending on the story. All of that talking equaled pages and pages of notes and an enormous amount of raw audio and video that needed to be turned into a nice sound-bitable package with the key attention-grabbing facts as the headline and the most important part of the story -- the lead.
Folks on TV make it seem so easy, and for creatives it often is, but it’s safe to say that whether I was writing for newspaper, radio, or TV, honing in on the lead and the most relevant facts and communicating those in the order that would make the most logical sense took a lot of skill.
Slinging Spots
Now, class aside, Emerson had great connections, so I was able to participate in work-intensive internships at CNN, WHDH-TV Boston, and Entertainment Tonight where I did a lot of interviewing and writing for reporters, and bonus - they actually used some of my stories.
When it came down to it though, I didn’t want the life of starting out as a journalist making about $18,000 in market 200+ -- AKA middle of nowhere USA. (Nor could I afford it.)
So, my journalism professor introduced me to the owner of a local radio station in Marshfield, MA called WATD (call letters literally stand for We’re At The Dump - which is a story for another time) who was looking for a new salesperson.
Long story short, I took the job selling radio commercials to local business owners for about $25 per spot in Boston’s South Shore because the owner offered me a respectable starting salary and also promised I could report for fun in my free time, so it was a win-win.
Selling or Storytelling?
Before long, I found myself reporting, being the talent for live broadcasts, and managing the station’s website in my spare time on the weekends.
However, what I ended up learning was that no matter if I was wearing my free-time “reporter hat” or my full-time “saleslady hat,”essentially I spent my days telling stories.
In talking to the local business owners, learning about their goals, planning their campaigns and promotions, and writing their commercials, I was helping them tell their story - which also happened to help them generate new customers.  
THAT type of storytelling was so much more rewarding to me than writing a news story for the sake of writing a news story.
My parents, who essentially refinanced their home to get me through school, have always kind of looked at me and said “So all that school for nothing, huh?” but I wholeheartedly disagree.
It wasn’t for nothing at all. I was able to take all of that knowledge and help tell a business’ story. To me, that's a dream come true.
People Buy Stories, Not Products
The businesses I’ve worked with over the years have been great at telling me what they do or how their product works - which in the world of SaaS, for example, can be very technical and let’s face it, not very exciting stuff.
Oftentimes, businesses make this technical focus the center of their marketing strategy and sure, it might work for them for awhile, but what I’ve found is when a business focuses on this type of bottom-of-the-funnel banter, they miss out on generating interest from prospects who are much earlier on in their buyer’s journey.
They miss the real story they facilitate with their product or service. I, along with the IMPACT team, help find and tell that story.
As marketers or salespeople, we need to focus on the value and benefits that we bring to the table, the actions that we help put into motion with our offering. Your story is made of the emotional, intangible results, not just the cold, hard facts and features.
It is this story that people buy, not just products. It is this story that I use as a salesperson to attract customers and to help those customers attract their own.
Immerse Yourself in Sales and Service
The best way to start drafting your story is to focus on your customers, prospects, and churned customers.
If you are a marketer, I recommend you sit in with your sales and services teams if you have them. Even if it’s just one person who sells and manages your customers, that person has invaluable information that will become the heart of your story.

Seek out answers to all of these questions:
Are prospects aware that a solution like yours exists?
If they’re aware, how do they typically find you?
When they come to you, what are their pain points?
When they come to you, what questions do they ask you?
Why do they choose you over competitors?
Why do you lose to competitors?
What value/benefit do you offer your customers?
What are the typical success or outcomes your customer’s achieve by using your products/ services?
If you’re a marketer, have you sat in on sales calls and demos?
Do you understand the emotions/feelings of buyers?
If you’re a marketer, have you sat in on services calls? Do you understand what it’s like to be a user of your product?
What types of results does a customer typically achieve after implementing your solution?
What are the biggest reasons for customer churn? How are you addressing it?
The answers to these questions are far more valuable than simply communicating product details to your prospects.
The answers are the emotional, intangibles that will guide you to a story that resonates with prospects at any stage of their buyer’s journey.
A Page Out of Journalism School
By now, you’ve spent the time with your sales and services team (or person) and you have answers to the questions above. You have at least a few pages of notes.
So, what’s your lead? What are the supporting details about your solution and value that are most important to your prospects?
Write them down in order in bullet points and open up another browser tab.  Look at your homepage above the fold (don’t cheat and scroll.)
Is your lead anywhere in sight? What about the supporting details you have bulleted out? Are they anywhere to be seen? Do the images you see on your homepage match that emotion or value? Can your prospects tell if you are able to solve their biggest challenges in 30 seconds?
If you see them, great job. You are telling a clear story that matches the emotions of your prospects and experiences of your customers. If you don’t see your lead or any of your bullet points, it’s time to get to work by aligning your website and content with your new story.
Don’t Do Nothing
It’s tempting to skip over the hard work of developing and implementing your business’ story.
The truth is, any variety of or iterations of tactics can bring you traffic, leads, and sales, even with the wrong messaging, but if you’re not telling the right story, you’ll get the wrong results.
You’ll bring the wrong people in the door and they’ll likely turnover quickly. Your story not only helps you sell, it helps you sell to the right people and grow your organization long-term.
