*** 🌱 Onion Hacking Update 🌱 *** So we decided to try some of these regrow projects to see if they worked, and happy to say they really do. We soaked the root end of left over scallions to get them going and then planted them once they reached about 3-4". We also separated the bulbs from a sweet onion that began to sprout and six weeks later we have both full grown scallions and some very robust onion plants (we started with 3 bulbs dissected from the sprouted onion and 2 divided again once planted so there's now 5 bulbs from the 1 sprouted onion). We've got some leeks now in the process as well. #onionsfromonions #onionhack #homesteadhack #homegrown #howdoesyourgardengrow #raisedbedgardening #pescadero https://www.instagram.com/p/CAlBWizAGR4/?igshid=j4jpufdn5le8

Update to our "Onion Hacking' project. After 10 days with their roots immersed in water both our scallions and sweet onions are ready for replanting. One of the sweet onions looks like it will produce 4 new onions! This was done by saving the root end of a store bought onion and placing it root side down in a small bowl of water (rinsing and refilling as needed to prevent any gunk forming) and placed in a window sill. #onionsfromonions #onionhacking #regrowingvegetables #selfsufficient #homesteadhack #veggiegarden #pescadero #florafaunaart (at Pescadero, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-sYGcCnujU/?igshid=1c9g8ahfzegvm

Being cooped up can be difficult especially if you're the can't sit still type like myself, so I've been trying to expand on some useful hobbies like gardening. Self sustainability has always been something I strive to be better at. Today's project focused on what I like to call onion hacking. 🌱 Did you know you can regrow onions from onions? 🌱 You sure can! This onion in our pantry started to sprout so I carefully dissected it and ended up with 3 new onion bulbs. The same can be done with scallions/green onions or the left over root side of any larger onion. The ones in the last slide have been soaking in water to cover their roots for about 4-5 days and new green shoots are already forming. Once these get to about 4" they'll get planted too. #onionsfromonions #homesteadhack #gardeninghack #sustainablegardening #grownathome #selfsufficient #florafaunaart #pescadero https://www.instagram.com/p/B-S80cTAhSg/?igshid=nwvj0tv189nm
