Fans and Clouds over Rocks and Water by Hon'ami Kōetsu and workshop of Sotatsu. Japanese. Edo Period, early 17th century. Ink, color, gold, and silver on paper. Freer Gallery of Art.
From the Freer:
Screens of this type were inspired by the story of a prince and his retinue crossing a bridge in Kyoto. When the prince tossed his fan into the river, the sight was so beautiful that his companions followed suit, tossing their fans and remarking at their beauty as they fluttered toward the water.
Many screens mounted with painted fans were produced by the Tawaraya atelier headed by the painter Sotatsu. The paintings on the fans and on these screens reflect the distinctive compositions and style associated with Sotatsu and his workshop. For example, the shape, vivid colors, and soft delineation of the rock forms are comparable to the islands in Sotatsu's Waves at Matsushima screens. Eleven of the fans are inscribed with poems in the elegant calligraphic style of Koetsu, whose large, square seal also appears on some of the fans. A master calligrapher and artistic leader, Koetsu often collaborated with Sotatsu on projects combining painting and calligraphy.

Poem-card from the Shinkokin wakashu (New Collection of Japanese Poems from Ancient and Modern Times) with Design of Pine on a Beach, Hon'ami Koetsu, 1606, Cleveland Museum of Art: Japanese Art
Tawaraya Sotatsu and Hon’ami Koetsu are both associated with the founding of the Rimpa school of Japanese painting. In this poem-card––one of 16 that survive––Tawaraya painted the gold and silver design, over which Hon’ami recorded poems from Shinkokin wakashu. The verses read from top to bottom and from right to left: "Even as I gaze, the thought of it is lonely. High in the heavens the moon-capital lies still in the sky of its dawning." Size: Overall: 132.1 x 43.2 cm (52 x 17 in.); Painting only: 20 x 17.4 cm (7 7/8 x 6 7/8 in.) Medium: card mounted on a hanging scroll; gold, silver, and ink on paper

Dimensiones:
a: 61 3/8 x 142 5/8 in (155,9 x 362,3 cm)
b: 61 3/8 x 142 7/8 in (155,9 x 362,9 cm)
