Finally, after a little over four years of sporadic playtime and procrastinating, I got my EU side account to the end of the core personal story and finished Victory or Death last night! My main on there, Hoskk has changed visually and also developed a depth of character I never originally predicted in the interim. His IC story has stretched much further than this by now, but this is still a nice in-game milestone for this account. (IC he was not in fact present for the assault on Orr and the death of Zhaitan. He was busy transitioning, evading Peacemakers and grifting in Polymock duels at that point in time.)

I love and appreciate you for asking about Hoskk and also the surprise of Skrapp (I think you're one of only like, two people who even know he exists). I'll do Hoskk first: BACKSTORY

Ghosts by Ladytron Vibe of this song is a little unusual for him but the lyrics are absolutely on point for his story. PERSONALITY Puppet Loosely Strung by The Correspondents AND Sharper Than a Pen by Lyre Le Temps Could NOT decide between the two of these so you get both of them. The first one with how the lyrics go I imagine someone else singing about Hoskk. ANGST I Cheat Death by The Noise Figures It's hard for me to quantify why this is his "angst." Best I can explain is he seems so carefree, untouchable and in control but it's just a mantra to cover up the burdens he carries and this song hits that. COMFORT Pure Imagination by Kevin Garrett AND Free Fly by Guilhem Desq First song has a bit of a nostalgic, melancholy feel but it encompasses what he's all about inside. He may be unable to put down roots and has a massive fear of commitment but he is and always will be driven by the need to create and share with others, even if it's brief before he moves on. Second is an instrumental that I associate with him flying on his beloved griffon and traveling companion Harrapax. LOVE LIFE The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove by Dead Can Dance This man's previous relationships that actually meant something are laying in jagged pieces behind him, and his current love life is nonexistent so his relationship with...relationships is complicated and bruised now. Good song for that! FIGHT SCENE

Another new face joining my expansive roster, meet Aeronomer Lennz! He is as imperious and cold as he is pretty. He’s an anti-paladin sort of character, and while he presents himself as dignified and charming in reality he’s got a cruel streak and that controlled, poised demeanor can crack in the right circumstances. You might be able to appeal to his sense of honor though, as he follows his own personal code of conduct pretty closely (usually, unless you’re standing between himself and something he’s driven to get at). He’s got a bit of a history with Hoskk and over the years has become something of a rival. I got a solid backstory for this guy but not sure where I’m taking his story just yet. Did all this in pens, no pencil. Sketching in ballpoint is still the ultimate.

A Commander-shaped hole in my character narratives.

More character thoughts! For peeps that have followed me for a bit or who I've talked to may have pieced together that I don't actually have a "proper" core Commander for my canon. That role has been filled mostly by my stand-in, Oort because he's been present for most of the important story beats through the Pact Commander's timeline. But he has only ever been a Warmaster, moving through major conflict to conflict across Tyria. Occasionally that role has also been filled by an old character of mine, Magister Antella Niebelung. She was present as a liaison at the very beginning of the Path of Fire story. I tried sticking my self-insert Hoskk into the role but he had his own plans and slipped right out of that obligation early on (he's very good at slithering out of commitments). But there's a thought that's bugged me for so long in the case of Oort being the closest thing. He became a high-ranking Warmaster early on, roughly around the same time that the Commander would have gotten their rank from their respective organization. And he worked closely with Pact leadership. So it stands to reason that in Oort's timeline, there has to be a Commander that isn't him but who he's in fact interacted with, maybe even knows on speaking terms, even if in a strictly professional context. This is a dilemma I've been trying to work out for some time. My particular version of the story and characters I have operate under the premise that there is in fact a Commander, AND YET I have no actual character to fit that role. I really just need to sus out trying to make one finally.

It's SAB time again already which means I'm posting flashbacks to last year when Hoskk was bothering @tinymoonmoth's Korro IC. Also I....I might have to open gold commissions to get those bird mount skins.

“Oh too bad, looks like luck isn’t on your side today friend! Better watch the cards next time and not the hands!” This fun, self-indulgent mixed media piece of Hoskk is done! Wanted to show off how his Mesmer magic manifests. He creates his own foci in the form of playing card (or tarot card) blanks that he draws symbols on, usually in alchemical ink. When casting what would be his utility or focus spells, he draws a card. That card then becomes his focus, and the physical anchor for his spell and phantasms. If he wants to create a clone that’ll persist for a while, he draws extra cards, one for each clone that holds one. He can also charge one with chaos magic and throw it like an explosive weapon (yes it totally looks like Gambit from X-men). Used cards disappear once a clone is done using them or if Hoskk is holding one, after a duration of about 9 minutes though this number is not set in stone. He can’t simply place the card back in the deck otherwise it’ll disappear prematurely. With the exception of casting more complex things like wells or clones, one card can be used for multiple spells. His deck is stored in an extra-dimensional space but is not infinite so he must periodically create new cards in his downtime. His magitech bracers also bear mentioning. They’re a magic capacitor that can convert other forms of energy into a signature he can use for his Mesmer abilities. Hoskk can “catch” magic effects from other spellcasters, for instance a lightning bolt from an Elementalist. He uses them sparingly though as their effectiveness and effects can be chaotic sometimes so he only uses them if he needs a boost in power or spellcasting (oftentimes using them when casting Continuum Split or giving himself alacrity. He’s still figuring out how to integrate them when casting Mirage mirrors).

Giving the public what they want, that is the absolute clusterfuck of this part at the sketch stage before clean-up and transferring. I’m at the tail-end of my weekend so will likely not get to inking yet, but next week I’ll probably stream working on this!
