Gyeongju, South Korea
I’d been in Busan for about a week.
I stayed there so long as I wanted to get a handle on Korea.
I wanted to move on though to see what else Korea had to offer.
I left the hostel and caught a bus to Gyenongju, the former imperial capital of Korea.
My guidebook to Korea was at stage proving as reliable as a sundial at night.
The former imperial city is a hodge podge, a mix of some older buildings, all low rise and many ugly 1980’s shops thrown into the mix.
It’s quite low key.
But of course the architecture isn’t the reason to visit the place, it’s the tombs and historical sites.
Emperors were entombed in burial mounds which were covered hills. They make for a striking sight.
Tumblr media
When you see a double mound that’s where an Emperor and his Empress have been entombed.
Tumblr media
The first night I’m there I stay in a courtyard guesthouse that could be in the countryside it feels that relaxed.
Tumblr media
It was a great break from the hustle and bustle of Busan.
I have to move the second night as they’re full, so I head to the only hostel in town.
It has a nice mix of guests.
At night they have a roof top Korean style barbecue accompanied with a mix of native drinks that we each contribute.
There’s an Italian guy staying there who’s been to 130 countries in the world.
He stayed in the same guesthouse as me in Port Of Spain in Trinidad & Tobago, it is a small world we live in!
Not sure where to go the following morning I consult my guidebook.
Not wanting to go to Seoul just yet, which will probably be my ultimate destination in Korea, I head to Jinju.
The other option I had was the popular holiday island of Jeju.
Unable to find accommodation on Jeju I pick Jinju.
Jinju turns out to be a place that doesn’t have too much to attract backpackers.
Leaving the bus station I go to find somewhere to stay.
None of the staff in the hotels and motels I check out can speak English.
Some of them put the palms of their hands together and rest their head on their hands to signify sleep. I nod.
Some display prices, some don’t.
One younger woman holds up a 10,000 Won note and four fingers to say that a night’ll cost me 40,000 Won, no way, I move on.
One older lady in a decent looking motel tells me ‘30,000’. I thank her and walk away. '25,000’; she’s open to compromise.
I agree, pay up and she hands me the key, no names, no pack-drill.
It’s the early evening and I go to find the famous fortress for which the town is known.
The sun is going down and the streets have a pleasant end of the day feel to them.
A sign at the gate says that the fortress closes at 18.00.
By now it’s 19.00.
A man hanging around the gate who wasn’t working there told me to head on in.
As it turns out the place is busy with people enjoying the evening, families and older people exercising energetically.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The following morning I have to take a taxi from the InterCity bus station I got in on to the Express bus station, where there are more options.
Every city has both an InterCity and an Express bus station.
It’s a bit of guess work trying to figure out which one will have the bus going to the place you want to get to.
At the Express bus station I can’t figure out where I’m going to.
Initially I think of Gwangju but decide on Seoul on impulse.

As we join with the Chinese Community in Celebrating the Arrival of First Chinese immigrants on October 12th 1806 , ABVMTT has dedicated this week to paying tribute to some members of the Trinidad Chinese Community who made significant contributions to our social , cultural and economic development over the years.
A SHORT STORY OF SYBIL ATTECK ( 1911 - 1975)
by Keith Atteck
Today in Trinidad the people who remember Sybil Atteck are diminishing with time. There is an effort under way by her nephew Keith Atteck to write a biographic work that highlights Sybil and her contribution to art in Trinidad and Tobago and provide a historical context to the Chinese family that surrounded her and nurtured her passion for art.
Sybil Marjory Atteck was born on February 3, 1911 on her grandfather’s estate in Tableland, South Trinidad. She was the third girl child to her parents Philip Charles Atteck and Elizabeth Atteck (née George). Her elder sisters were Olive Atteck and Olga Atteck. She was followed by her next younger sister Rita Atteck who was born in 1912. The family were sent off to find their own way on a piece of land in Rio Claro purchased by their father to establish a cocoa estate. This estate was next to the de Verteuil Estate. I am still trying for find out exactly where this was.
Tumblr media
The four girls were soon followed by three more girls and one son. In Rio Claro the children were home schooled. The family eventually reached eleven children. Sybil’s best subject was art and this interest was established early in her life. Granny George encouraged the family to move to Port of Spain as the girls were now of age to go to convent school. The family moved the children, mother and grandmother to Port of Spain in 1924 where the eldest three girls went to Bishop Anstey in Port of Spain.
Tumblr media
Sybil’s desire to be an artist was tempered with the family’s dire financial situation after the 1930’s arrival of the witches’ broom and black pod diseases that whipped out much of the cocoa harvests and put the family in debt to their Chinese creditors. In September of 1930 Sybil got her first job at the Experimental Station in St. Augustine an she would go onto to other jobs before becoming an professional artist. May of her siblings also went to work all to help support the family. It was in 1930 that Sybil first exhibited her art as part of one of the first exhibitions sponsored by the “Society of Independents” that was formed a year earlier in 1929.
Tumblr media
Let’s fast forward to 1960 - 1962. By now Sybil is a founding member of the Trinidad Art Society. She has studied art in England, Italy, Peru and the United States. She is the first West Indian artist to have exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. Sybil Atteck is a professional art teacher and mentor to many local artists, and has done major art exhibitions nationally and internationally, completed many commissioned works including murals, and is in the prime of her career. Trinidad is on the brink of independence. Sybil is involved in selecting the art works for the opening of the Hilton Hotel and she is on the committee to develop the symbols of the nation. With the help of her brother Philip Atteck and his wife Helen Atteck they open an art gallery and flower shop at the Hilton Hotel, and Sybil is deeply involved in the efforts of the Trinidad Art Society as the Art Society President. Wow what a burst of energy not only for Sybil Atteck but for Trinidad. And there is so much more.
Tumblr media
Sybil would soon face the most difficult moments in her life. In 1969 has her first bout with cancer. She tried desperately to raise the funds to pay for her treatment. With her future is now in doubt she fights on and survives this life challenge and continues with several exhibitions. In 1973 she is nominated for a Chaconia Medal (Gold) for her contribution to art in Trinidad and Tobago. However, her cancer returns and she was unable to be present to receive the medal. Her sister Olga, now returned to Trinidad to care for her ailing sister receives the medal on her behalf. Sybil struggles on through 1974 and eventually succumbs to her ailment on April 15, 1975.
However, Sybil Atteck is not forgotten. She is regaled in newspaper articles and magazines by her friends, peers, and may others. She is featured on Stamps of Trinidad and Tobago. Sybil Atteck is even in a crossword puzzle. And in 2006 she is featured in the celebration of the Bicentenary of the Chinese arrival in Trinidad. Her legacy lives on in the memory of her nephew, in the art that can be seen in Trinidad and around the world, and in the heart of the many students who had the privilege to be taught and mentored by Sybil Atteck.

In a dingy, dimly lit brothel, Maria explains how she left her young child behind in crisis-hobbled Venezuela to work as a prostitute in Trinidad and Tobago, hoping to earn enough money to return home and start anew. The English-speaking island lies only 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) away, making it an attractive destination for tens of thousands of Venezuelans who have fled there in recent years in search of a better life. Most are undocumented and work for peanuts, exploited by traffickers, pimps and failed by the system, observers say.Hundreds are women who end up selling their bodies, some willingly, some not, most living in grim conditions without freedom of movement or even the right to use their cellphones at will.Maria, who did not want to give her real name, said she has to work back the $500 she owes the traffickers who arranged her recent passage to the Trinidadian capital, Port of Spain."I hope to do so in a month or two. Then, work one or two more months and return to Venezuela with the money to open a business," the 25-year-old told AFP over the loud music pounding through her workplace and temporary home.Prostitutes told AFP they earn about $12 to $24 of the $30-$60 charged by a brothel for 30 minutes spent with a client.A john wishing to take a woman home, or to a hotel, has to fork out a minimum of $150 -- about equal to the average monthly salary in Venezuela. Also from her earnings, Maria said she had to pay $50 a month for the "rent" of her small brothel room. With what she can stash away, she has big dreams of opening a small shop back home."It's fine," she says, resigned to her fate.Maria knew what she was getting in to when she left Venezuela. Many others do not.- 'Sexual merchandise' -According to a 2021 report on sexual slavery by the NGO Connectas, over 21,000 Venezuelan women and girls fell victim to human trafficking in Trinidad and Tobago in the previous six years. Most were between 18 and 25, some younger, lured by promises of gainful employment."They lose their freedom as soon as they set foot on any Trinidadian beach, and their 'original sin' is an alleged debt that these women can only pay by becoming sexual merchandise," said the Connectas report.About seven million of Venezuela's 30 million inhabitants have left home in the face of an economic crisis that has slashed GDP by 80 percent in 10 years.Officially, there are 60,000 Venezuelans in Trinidad and Tobago, which has 1.4 million inhabitants, although NGOs estimate the figure could be much higher -- as much as 10 percent of the population.Only about 9,000 have legal status."People call us. We fetch them on the Venezuelan coast... We pay the Trinidadian coast guard $1,500," a boat owner who transports migrants told AFP on condition of anonymity.Since 2018, more than 100 people have died in the crossing.Once in Trinidad, rights groups say migrants are abandoned largely to their own devices.Figures from the Trinidadian Financial Intelligence Unit showed that in the four years to 2020, human trafficking added $2.2 million to the country's economy, according to the Connectas report.- 'They take advantage' -Exploitation stretches beyond sex work to the construction, cleaning and services industries."If (the work) is hard and underpaid, it's for us. The Trinidadians do not accept to work for the salaries we do," said a Venezuelan ex-soldier who works at a car wash for the average wage of about $3 an hour. "Sometimes the boss doesn't pay you the hours you worked because he knows you can't report it, they take advantage," added a construction worker.Opposition MP David Lee, while pointing out the "security risk" posed by unvetted, undocumented migrants, said the government nevertheless had a responsibility to look after them.It is "a big human rights issue," he told AFP."They (migrants) are really at the mercy of the population of Trinidad and Tobago."pgf/jt/mlr/fb/st

Day1 ! Let's GO!
To start our journey, we landed in the capital of Trinidad, Port of Spain. We booked a room at the Hilton hotel, it had a wonderful view to the Queen's Park Savannah and the Royal Botanic Gardens. Right after arriving there and unpacking our luggage, we ran to the tourism center.
Tumblr media
Here the guide spoke to us about Trinidad and Tobago being two different main islands and many small islands around them. Walking around the royal botanic garden , the weather started getting to us it was so hot and humid we could barely walk under the heat of the sun, the tourist guide told us about the weather, he explaind that even in the coldest months of the year the temperature would not go under 20°.
After visiting the Park, we visited Invaders Bay to refresh ourselves, it was crowded. Our tourist guide whose name was Tamika, told us that it was packed because of the summer season, but that it wasn't uncommon to see many people around the city. We actually thought that this country didn't have a large population at all, but Tamika said that there are more than 1.5 million people living in Trinidad and Tobago and almost a third of that population is located in Port of Spain!
Tumblr media
For two people that came all the way from Concepción, we thought that we wouldn't encounter a much larger city around here, but we were surprised to learn that Port of Spain has double the population of Concepción. And although we call Concepción "TropiConce" for its quite strange and changing weather, Trinidad and Tobago actually has a tropical climate, full of humidity and constant heat throughout the whole year.
This day gave a us a huge lesson: no need for that much clothes if you come to Trinidad and Tobago!

Apart from my writer/publisher membership at ASCAP, I'm now also a beneficiary member of #COTT. I brought my dad out of retirement with #DoSomethingForPan, recorded late 1990's, released 2001. The #BossaNova style production was part of what was meant to be an ep single featuring #ElevateTheWomen & #Charlotte. We made those 3 recordings in #StThomas with #SoundEngineering wiz #JamesAnderson, who also performed as a #ClassicalGuitarist there. I wanted dad's return to recording #OriginalMusic to have an international flare. Since his last recordings in the 1970's, most of his time was spent in the #USVI where he did mostly hotel gigs. Though they were diehard fans of #calypso & #pan, the people of the #USVirginIslands were also die hard fans of jazz, r&b, pop, rock & reggae. It was a cosmopolitan #CaribbeanAmerican community, that I had become a part of. I wanted the recordings to reflect that, so I made 'Elevate The Women' a reggae styled production, & 'Charlotte' a pop ballad styled production. Ultimately the ep single we made was never officially released. #LordSuperior #MoribaMarcano #Caribbean #music #culture #people #Trinidad #PortOfSpain #NewYork #LosAngeles
