Dexter Camera The opening scene includes loads of extreme close-ups of the protagonists and his tasks. The close ups make these average tasks look really violent and unsatisfying. The close ups prevent us from fully seeing the protagonists face until the end. The camera has a very soft focus so you can’t see the background. This also makes the protagonists face visible but blurred, this creates mystery surrounding what he looks like. Editing There are lots of unnatural jump cuts throughout the sequence. The jump cuts complement the uncomfortable feel of the close ups by the camera and add to the overall unnerving feel of the intro. The editing also crops out Dexter's face to add to the mystery surrounding his appearance. The editing eventually Sound There is a combination of diegetic and non-diegetic sound throughout the intro. There is non diegetic somewhat upbeat dramatic music throughout the intro, this suggests normality despite the weird shots that are shown. This almost acts as a reminder that although the shot types used are strange the tasks are still just basic routine tasks. There is also exaggerated diegetic sound to match the tasks such as the horrific sound of a knife scraping across the plate as he eats or the razer scraping across his face as he shaves. These sounds are incredibly unsettling and unsatisfying to hear. Mise en scene There is low-key lighting throughout the intro. This gives it a rather sinister and mysterious tone and also helps with the camerawork and editing to conceal his appearance. The props include regular items that you’d expect to see in a houseapartment. However, the way he uses them is quite violent e.g. at the end when he puts his shirt on it looks like he’s being suffocated by it. And when he ties his laces it looks like he’s using them to strangle someone.
