Who Was The REAL Ian Fleming?. What doesn't help, is always that 1 / 2 of what I read about the subject is merely nonsense anyway. The golf wedge considered to become one of the three "scoring" clubs with all the other two being the putter as well as the driver. It's the way they respond for their nerves when in pressure situations that separates the great golfers from your crowd. The Divot Tool Is Used In Golf: What Is It And How Do You Get One
Tumblr media
The term "divot" in golf refers to a portion of turf that has been cut from the ground during a stroke. The majority of golf shots made with an iron or wedge will remove a thin layer of turf where the ball was resting. The reason for this is that the clubs are designed to hit the golf ball on a descending path: Since the iron is moving downwards, it goes on to do so after striking the ball. It will dig a little into the turf when the swing ends.
Golfers can take deeper or shallower divots depending on their swings however, divots are a typical, expected result of a good golf swing made with the wedge or iron. All golfers should own and use custom ball markers golf as one of the most essential tools. They're generally inexpensive and are often donated for free to those who organize a golf tournament or course.
Divot Tools are Used to Create Pitch Marks
The marks left by the pitch (also called ball marks) can be repaired using divot tools. Pitch marks can be left when a golfer hits the green. A small crater, as you might say.
The majority of divot tools feature the same basic design: a grip-end that fits between the thumb and the other fingers, with two prongs at the other end. They are usually metal or plastic.
Why do we think that every golfer should possess and utilize a divot tool? The "why" of the use of divot tools is as follows: Putting green pitch marks can be fixed by golfers.
Shouldn't They Be Called "Pitch Mark Tools or Ball Mark Tools What do you think?
Yes! It makes sense. According to the dictionary "divot" is "a square of sod or turf" or "a loose piece of turf." So using the golf divot tool green could be seen as repairing "a square of turf or sod."
youtube
Many golfers look at divots in different ways. They are thin turf pieces that are broken up by iron shots off the fairway. They aren't divot tools.
The gadget you see here isn't called an "pitch marker tool" or it's a "ball marker tool" however it is used by a lot of golfers. It is a divot instrument. It always has been, always will be.
How to Purchase a Divot Tools
Ask the local golf club. They might have them available for sale (typically for just a few dollars) and might even offer the equipment for free. Golf course staff will want golfers to make use of divot repair tool to aid in maintenance of the greens.
You could also look through any golf store. You might find some with an image or pattern (such as sports team logos) that you like. You can also personalize many professional shops online. Divot tools are often found in "goodie bags" handed out to golfers during corporate events and charity tournaments.
Many divot tools also include coin-sized ballmarkers which are attached magnetically to the handle end.

Agilenano - News: By Jamison Rantz
This is a project that I actually complete a few weeks ago and I am glad I did because with the stay at home order it has been a blast to have in the shop. This DIY golf simulator is about taking an otherwise inexpensive sensor and trying to make the experience as realistic as possible. It is also about having a dual purpose setup where the screen and projector can be used for standard TV/movie viewing as well as a golf simulator. If you love this stuff as much as we do, you might want to consider subscribing to our YouTube channel and following us on Instagram where we post sneak peeks and behind the scenes stuff in our stories. Also, did you know you can get tons of projects plans from all around the web when you follow us on Facebook and Pinterest! If you would like to support our site and help keep our content free come find out more about how we can make money with no extra cost to you. Time needed: 2 days. The tutorial below will show you how to make a golf simulator using the OptiShot 2 sensor. Keep in mind that the screen we are building in this example is for foam balls only. Upgrade the Turf on OptiShot 2 My one main issue with the OptiShot 2 is the turf that comes on it. The turf is thin and the surface beneath it is hard. So if you take any type of divot it is all the more obvious. Luckily I stumbled upon Arsene Golf where they make upgraded turfs specifically for the OptiShot. I went with the JagManJoe Tee Line turf which is easy to swap out (everything is velcro) and much more realistic to hit off of. This issue is that now the hitting pad is that much higher off the ground so we need to build a stance pad to bring the ground around it up to the same height. Building the Stance Pad To increase the height with as little weight as possible we are using 2 inch foam board insulation with 1/4″ plywood adhered to both sides. This will keep the foam from collapsing. I made my stance pad 4 feet by 6 feet. This allows for even the tallest of friends to have enough room on the pad (with a driver) and not feel like they are going to accidentally step off the back. The plywood and foam board can be cut down with a circular saw all at the same time. Lay the 1/4″ plywood on top of the foam and set the saw depth to not cut quite all the way through the foam. After making the cut, snap the foam board end off. If you want you could save this excess and make a floating pad for your left handed friends. Layout the sensor where you want it and cut the hole with a circular saw and remove the foam below it. Then mark and drill a large hole in the foam for the USB cord from the sensor to exit. Adding Padding Carpet pad will soften up the surface that you are standing on and make it feel more realistic. Apply a layer of carpet pad adhesive or spray adhesive and cut the carpet pad to fit. I found that you can buy a rug pad which is the same thing but comes in a smaller size for about $25. I now realize that I was cutting the pad upside down and it would have been a lot easier to cut with the vapor barrier (plastic layer) up. I even installed it upside down 🙈. Adding the Turf I was able to pick up an outdoor rug that looks like turf for about $20. I then wrapped the stance pad with it and stapled it to the bottom, trimming any excess. Installing the Sensor After the bottom was stapled I flipped it over and cut the hole in the turf for the sensor. I left a little extra to wrap the sides of the hole. You could try to tuck it between the plywood and foam but I found that with the sensor in place it was tight enough that it didn’t move. Measure the height of the sensor and add plywood scraps under the sensor to make sure the turf is slightly higher than the stance pad. I found that this is best because if you take a divot sometimes the club will sweep through and hit the start of the turf that covers the stance pad at the end of the sensor and could pull it up a bit. If you get the XL turf upgrade that won’t be an issue. Locate the hole in the foam for the USB cord and cut a hole in the turf. Feed the USB cable through the hole and plug it into your sensor. Then slip the sensor into place. Mine was a very snug fit but if you can get it in place then you may need to trim the plywood and/or foam a bit. Determine your Screen Requirements If this is going to be strictly a golf simulator then simply hanging a drop cloth could be enough. However, I had a few requirements for my screen. – No real golf balls, only foam (glass garage doors and concrete floors don’t mix well) – Has to double as a TV screen – Not too intrusive, must be close to wall. – Has to be able to handle some ambient light With these requirements, I ultimately decided to build a frame that would suspend the screen 5″ or so off the wall and keep the 16:9 screen taught with bungees. The screen needed to stay tight to keep a good picture but it also needed to flex enough to absorb the energy of the foam ball. The screen I went with was an 180″ ALR (ambient light rejecting) 16:9 projector screen. I wasn’t 100% sure whether or not the balls would damage the screen but after having played on it for weeks now I haven’t noticed any damage. If you are looking to hit real golf balls then I would recommend an enclosure with impact screen like this. Installing Top Screen Support To get started on the frame I assembled two 2x4s in the shape of an L for the top and bottom. The overall frame length should be 12″ more than the screen. Since we will be attaching 2x4s to each end for the sides of the frame we need to subtract the thickness of the 2x4s (2 x 1.5″ = 3″). Therefore the L shaped parts of the frame (top and bottom) should be 9″ longer than the screen. Before installing the L on the wall, stretch the screen out on the ground and center the L at the top of the screen. Then install 1-1/4″ washer head screws in the L at each grommet location, leaving the head up enough to get the bungee under it. This is how the bungees will hook onto the frame. The same can be done for the bottom L as well. Locate the studs, level and secure the L with 3-1/2″ wood screws into the studs. Hanging the Screen Start by feeding the bungee through the back for the grommet and then hooking it onto the corresponding screw on the frame. The ball on the end of the bungee should be bigger than the grommets on the screen. Install the Bottom Support Measure down from the top of the frame 12″ more than your screen height and make a mark at each end. Make sure the end of the bottom L is plumb with the top L. To do so you can use weight on the end of a string and drop it from the top L end. Or just measure from the corner of the room and make sure those distances are the same. Locate the studs, level and secure the L with 3-1/2″ wood screws into the studs and use the bungees to attach the screen to the screw heads on the frame. Install the Sides The side 2x4s show be cut to 12″ longer than the height of the screen. Then they can be screws onto the top and bottom Ls using 3-1/2″ wood screws. Tensioning the Screen Place the screws for the bungees on the side 2x4s at the same height as the grommets and attach with bungees. Test out the spring back of the screen by hitting a few foam balls into it. If it is too tight, the balls might bounce off the screen too fast. If it is too loose, the balls might hit the back wall and bounce back from hitting a hard surface. Adjust the screw placement on the frame or the length of the bungees to add more tension or take some away until you are happy with the results. Adding Batting to the Frame To soften the edges of the frame and bungees when wrapping with fabric, first you must cut down strips of batting and staple to the frame, over the bungees. Preparing the Fabric Cut down strips of fabric that are more than big enough to cover the area between the screen and extend to wrap the frame. I just cut my 36″ wide fabric in 1/2 (one for each side). Then apply double faced tape to one side. Securing the Fabric to the Screen Temporarily staple or clamp the fabric to the frame so that it is suspended over the screen with the double faced tape lined up with the edge of the screen. Then staple through the tape and into the black border of screen. The screen itself is thin and staples will easily be pulled through. The double faced tape will not only help keep the staples from pulling through but it will also leave a crisp line on the edge of the fabric. Attaching the Fabric to the Frame Peel the other side of the double faced tape off and fold the fabric over itself and staple it to the frame. Any excess can but tucked behind the frame or folded over and stapled together. Projector & Wiring Selecting and installing a projector depends on your environment. I have to deal with a lot of ambient light so I went with a brighter projector which you can identify by looking at the amount of lumens. I recommend going with a quality brand like Epson, Optima, BenQ, Panasonic, etc. If you want to save some money, look on your local Facebook marketplace or search Ebay (which is where I got mine). The USB cord coming out of the sensor gets connected to computer that meets the requirements for OptiShot 2. Then from the computer you can connect to the projector with an HDMI cable. However, since I have an Apple computer and am using an Apple TV for standard viewing, I can connect wirelessly with AirPlay. Kurtbastian one-shot - “Fresh and New” (Rated G)
In an effort to know one another better, Kurt asks a question that strikes a nerve in both Sebastian and Blaine. (1548 words)
Notes: Takes place some time after “Movie Night” with a comment that refers back to that chapter so if you haven’t read it, do :) Blaine friendly, light angst.
Part 24 of Outside Edge
Read on AO3.
“Okay …” Kurt grins at his own genius as Sebastian slides in front of him, takes his hands, and they begin to skate “… for the grand prize and all of the marbles …”
“Hit me.” Sebastian twirls Kurt once, then slips an arm around his waist. Kurt responds with a hand on Sebastian’s shoulder.
“What is your absolute favorite thing about skating on freshly surfaced ice?” Kurt strokes with his right blade and glides forward, matching a rhythm Sebastian sets as he mirrors Kurt’s glide in reverse. It’s an hour before twilight. The rays of setting sun light the ice of Sebastian’s private rink, making it look like they’re skating on a lake of gold.
“I think the cuts that I make,” Sebastian answers without any effort spent on thinking. “Looking back at the ice and knowing that I put those marks there, from the crazy, zig-zag cuts to the divots and the sheers. For me, it’s exhilarating.”
Kurt nods, the corners of his mouth curling with the slight roll of his eyes. “Yup. Just as I suspected.”
“What’s that?”
“You’re a narcissist.”
From across the rink, where he’s working on his edges, Blaine snickers.
“That’s not what I mean,” Sebastian says, immediately jumping to the defensive. “Skating is an art. Skaters aren’t just the artists, we’re the tools that create it. But unless someone’s videoing us, we don’t get a chance to see it. Those cuts we make on the ice, those we can see. It’s proof of what we did. We leave them behind after our performance is complete. And when I’m done, I can go back and examine the curves and the swirls and remember. But not just that. They’re so telling. Sometimes they reveal things that I didn’t know about myself, like where I put my weight, how tight my spins were, if I cut out of a move too early or if I landed uneven. It’s a way of communicating with myself, gauging my own progress, which is important to me even more now that I don’t have a coach.”
“Wow,” Kurt says, the sarcasm in his eyes and smile gone as Sebastian’s own eyes dart to his skates. “That’s … so deep. I never thought about it that way.”
“Yeah, well, that’s me.” Sebastian raises Kurt’s arm and spins him, smirking when their eyes meet. “I’m deep as fuck.” Kurt laughs, but Blaine, working on his power pulls, is conspicuously silent. “How about you?”
“I …” Kurt looks from his boyfriend’s face to the windows across the ice, the light flooding through them filling the rink with a beautiful but painfully bright glow. “I used to make it a point not to be one of the first people out on the ice. So, until recently, I really didn’t give it much thought because I didn’t skate on the ice right after it was resurfaced. I always waited until everyone else got on.”
Sebastian tilts his head in confusion, utterly perplexed as to why any skater, especially one of Kurt’s caliber, wouldn’t jump at the chance to be first out on a freshly cut surface. “Why?”
“It just didn’t seem right.” Kurt shifts his weight back, pulling Sebastian towards him and changing directions. “It didn’t seem like I should get that honor. I mean, I had no doubt that I belonged on the ice with all of the other freestyle skaters, it’s just … being the first one out? It seemed like it should go to someone bigger than me. That’s all.”
“I used to make sure I was always the first person out on the ice,” Sebastian admits with a heavy swallow. Kurt slides the hand resting on Sebastian’s shoulder to his neck, starts massaging the muscles there.
“That’s not a bad thing,” he says reassuringly, imagining a young, smug Sebastian tossing on his skates, tying them tight, then barreling onto the ice; the pride he must have felt being the first one on. Kurt knows a lot of kids like that, who rush through their off-ice warm-ups the second they see the Zamboni take its last turn on the ice just so they can have the honor of being first. Some of them don’t even wait until the driver has shoveled the last of the snow and closed the bay doors. They leap on and take off with their mothers yelling warnings behind them, stroking or racing or striking whatever graceful pose they’ve stretched enough to hit, sailing across the sleek surface like majestic ships on a calm sea.
Kurt understands why Sebastian is upset, but he has to admit, even at his cruelest, Sebastian was one of the most graceful skaters to ever hit the ice.
He deserved to be first.
“Yeah, well, all things considered,” Sebastian says, leaning into his boyfriend’s fingers, “I can’t help but feel like it is.”
“How about you, Blaine?” Kurt asks when their path and his path intersect, changing the subject slightly. “What’s your favorite thing about skating on fresh ice?”
“My favorite thing about skating on fresh ice …” Blaine starts, the focus never leaving his face as he glides along on one leg, with Kurt and Sebastian changing speed to follow “… is hearing the noise my blades make – the swish-swish when I’m stroking, or the roar when I’m doing power pulls. That clap like thunder when I land a triple perfectly. Nothing tops that. It’s the most amazing sound in the world.”
“And you called me a narcissist,” Sebastian whispers. With a scrunch of his lips, Kurt reaches further up Sebastian’s neck and tugs sharply at a strand of his hair, shushing his boyfriend without saying a word.
“When I first started skating,” Blaine continues, “when I first knew that skating was all I wanted to do for the rest of my life, my parents would take me to the rink closest to our house to practice. We’d go during public skate but after school let out, when they knew it would be busiest. You see, my dad didn’t originally like the idea of having a figure skater for a son, so my parents tried to discourage me whenever they could. They wouldn’t buy me my own skates, so I had to use those awful rentals. The blades would be covered in rust, and they were never sharpened. My folks also filled my afterschool schedule with soccer and Tae Kwon Do, so by the time we got there, the ice was so cut up that even the good skaters were falling all over themselves. But none of that mattered to me, because even a bad day on the ice was a good day, you know?”
Blaine changes direction with a long, wistful sigh. Kurt and Sebastian pull closer together, nearly hugging one another as the distance between them and Blaine drifts farther apart.
“Eventually, when I showed no sign of stopping, they realized they weren’t going to have a soccer player or a martial artist for a son, so they broke down. They got me lessons, a coach, and a new pair of skates. I remember the first time I got fitted for skates, my father said, ‘Just promise me this won’t make you gay.’ The thing is that … I already was.” Blaine lowers his leg and glides to a stop. “I knew I wasn’t like him, or my brother. I didn’t want the relationships that they had. I saw myself with a family and kids, but with a handsome husband, not a beautiful bride, and … I didn’t think there was anything strange about it, or wrong with it. I was so young then, it never dawned on me how much my dad would hate me if I was gay. When you’re a kid, that’s not something you ever see happening. It’s unfathomable.”
Blaine’s shoulders drop. Sebastian and Kurt look at one another – Kurt with a furrowed brow and sympathetic eyes; Sebastian with the same sympathy, but also a hint of annoyance. Kurt’s brow furrows further, and Sebastian rolls his eyes.
“Okay,” Sebastian says. “You win.”
Blaine spins around to face the hugging couple, his eyebrows high on his forehead. “Really?”
“Yeah,” Sebastian says as Blaine bounces on his toe picks. “You definitely had the saddest story. So, what will it be?”
“Goony Golf!” Blaine cheers, zooming towards the edge of the rink to take off his skates.
“Next time, can we just draw straws or pick numbers to see who gets to choose what we do on Friday night?” Kurt asks. He tries to follow Blaine, but gets pulled back into Sebastian’s arms instead. And that’s where he stays because being held by Sebastian is better than miniature golf any day, even with one of his best friends. “It’s less depressing.”
“We’re bonding,” Sebastian explains. “I thought you were the one who wanted us all to get to know one another better. That includes the good and the bad, babe.”
“Yeah, but between my mom, your parents, and his dad, I’m going to start drinking before I get to college!”
Sebastian chuckles, hugging Kurt tighter since he knows the next words out of his mouth might get him a smack on the arm. “Those are strong words from a man who can’t handle his sparkling cider.”

What You Should Look for in a Golf Range Finder
Tumblr media
Do you have any interest in playing golf? If you haven’t played the sport yet, you should know that there are several gears and accessories that you will need in order to play it. Some of the essential gears include the golf club, golf shoes with non-metal cleats, some golf balls, a divot tool, and a handful of shirts. You can’t go to a golfing without the necessary items. In most cases, you can’t get a membership in a golf course if you are not suited to play golf.
Golf is a sport that anyone can play. You can play it for leisure purposes or you can train hard to get to a professional level. Whatever your purpose in playing the sport, you should just enjoy the game. After all, sports are meant to be enjoyed. To make the most out of your golf games, you need to add some accessories into your essential items. One of the most useful accessories for both beginners and professional golf players is the golf range finder. It is an electronic device that can calculate the distance of your target hole. It can be really difficult for new players to get a score in the game, especially if you do not know the distance of your target. You will just have to depend on your luck throughout the sport and it would be not so much fun. That is why you need a golf range finder.
You do not have to wait until you learn how to play golf before you buy your own golf range finder. It would be best if you already have one on your first try. The sport would be much more enjoyable if you do so. A local golf store should have a golf range finder in stock. However, if there no golf stores near you, you should try shopping at online stores. There are many good deals of golf range finders out there. You just have to be careful in buying because not all of them offer the same quality and features. You need to invest your money on a quality golf range finder that can help you improve your play.
So what should you look for in a golf range finder? First, you need to find a range finder that gives accurate calculations. It would be useless to use a distance-measuring device that provides inaccurate measurements. Most branded range finders have the right calibration to make the most accurate measurements. If possible, search for top-rated laser range finders in the market.
Second, you’ll need a range finder that can last a day or more. As already mentioned, golf range finders are electronic devices and they rely on battery for power. You need one that has high battery capacity so you can enjoy playing golf as long as you want.
Lastly, you need a range finder with a maximum range of 400 yards. There is no point in using a range finder that can’t measure distances of far targets.

Why You Really Need Best Golf Bags
Is it really necessary to have a Golf Bag for attending a tournament?
When you go shopping, do you take a bag with you? If yes then why? Because you know that you are going with an empty hand but will getting back full of resources.
In the same way, when you go for golf especially in a tournament you must check whether you are taking all the necessary things with you or not. To make this easier you must use best golf bags.
As a smart golf player, you must make ready all the things you need in the golf field. Because we know the strategy is the 50% key to success. If you don’t know what you will need in the field you cannot be relaxed. On the other hand, if you are concerned with this then you will get enough time to think over the game. You don’t need to worry about the kit.
A golf bag can rescue you from this. Let’s see how essential the golf bag is-
1.    Sunscreen or umbrella: If you are going on a cloudy day or a sunny day you may need an umbrella or a tube of sunscreen. Keeping your face safe from harmful rays of the sun or from unaware rain, you will need those. Discount Golf Bags can be your trump card to make these things ready before the match.
 2.    Water bottle & towel: Water is known as the lifesaver. Standing in a field on a sunny day & without shield, how boring the situation is! But if you are in a tournament then you must undergo this situation. A bottle of cold water and a towel can get you relief from the situation. Bearing a water bottle & towel is very easy when you are having a golf bag with you.
Tumblr media
  3.    Golf tees and divot tools: The necessity of tees and divot tools is beyond description. Tees are vulnerable and you don’t know how much tees you are going to need. But you cannot take a bunch of tees in your pocket. So you are definitely going to need a golf bag. Meanwhile, some players use tees as a divot tool. But as a smart player, you must bring a divot tool.
 4.    Golf gloves: Gloves can rip or get wet with sweat or can be lost. So taking enough gloves is a smart idea. Best Golf Stand Bag will help you with taking this. You may use different gloves for practices, matches, and for reserve.
 5.    Golf Ball: You must keep some new and old ball with you. Old, damaged or out of service balls can be your best choice for practicing. You will definitely not want to throw your new balls in water and woods. So you must take enough balls with you.
After all to make better results a mental preparation is very necessary. A golf bag can make you free from mental stress.

Now you're ready to go. Unfortunately our brains love to complicate the issue and get inside the method of something that in reality is indeed dang easy. You’re not into skiing; you can’t skate; you built your last snowman 27 years ago, and that whole dusk at 4:25 p.m. thing really gets you down. We get it. Winter sucks. For those of us who don’t have a nourishing cold-weather activity to pass the time between golf seasons, the “dark months” are brutal. Even worse, as we peek out the window, wondering if it will ever be playable again, our golf games turn to crap. By the time spring rolls around, we’re struggling just to put the ball in play.
✱ Though we understand this annual plight, it doesn’t have to be this way. There’s no need to let your game get rusty. These days there are commercial simulators, indoor practice centers, hitting bays with heaters, even software that turns your flatscreen into a virtual-golf experience. What we’re trying to say is that you don’t have to put your sticks away if you live in Frostbite Falls, Minnesota. Just practice anywhere it’s warm.
✱ In this package, tour pros such as Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Cheyenne Woods, and top instructors including David Leadbetter and Stan Utley (above) are going to teach you how to winterize your game while you wait for the big thaw. And for you Sunbelt golfers, these tips work outdoors, too.
GET COMFORTABLE PITCHING OFF TIGHT LIES
By Stan Utley
Whether you’re making swings on artificial turf, like I am here at this indoor facility (see photo above), or you’re practicing on berber in your den, you can get a feel for how your wedge needs to slide along the surface to execute a pitch from a tight or hardpan lie. Come in too steep, and you’re going to feel that hard impact all the way up your arms. Stand tall and swing so the wedge’s sole skims along the ground.

USE THIS TIME TO MAKE A PUTTING CHANGE—FOR THE BETTER
By Hank Haney
The racks are filled with all kinds of putters designed to make rolling the ball easier, and that’s great for some players. But the best putterhead technology in the world isn’t going to help if you can’t control the face through impact. If you think you have the yips, or generally struggle to hit putts on the line you’ve chosen, don’t be afraid to try different ways to hold the club, as well as grips of different shapes and sizes. Shaking things up can really change the way your hands and wrists respond through impact and can calm down extra movement. Here I’m holding an oversize putting grip. If you’re still using a grip of standard thickness, just the different feeling of holding this grip can do wonders for a shaky stroke. It has saved plenty of careers on the professional tours, believe me, and can make putting fun for you again.

HIT SOLID CHIPS WITH YOUR KNEES
By David Leadbetter
Chipping indoors is a time-honored way to get your golf fix on inclement days. But rather than doing it mindlessly, use this time to improve your lower-body action. Many amateurs hit these shots off their back foot, trying to lift the ball into the air. If you hang back with a cushy lie, you might get lucky and still chip it OK. But do it on a door mat, and you might ricochet one off the china cabinet. The goal is to get your weight on the front foot and hit down on the ball. A good technique to ensure that happens is to move your back knee toward the target as you swing down. It can even bump the front knee. This will help you hit it solid. Check this move in front of a mirror to confirm what you’re doing.
David Leadbetter is one of Golf Digest’s 50 Best Teachers in America.
LEARN TO TAKE IT EASY WHEN YOU PUTT
By Jordan Spieth
Putting problems often stem from effort—too much effort. I see a lot of amateurs strangle the grip and then make a jabby stroke. The result is typically a miss, usually short, often crooked. If you make a softer, quieter stroke, the result will almost always be better. Spend this offseason developing smooth tempo by swinging your phone charger back and forth—heavy end hanging down—like you’re making a putting stroke. Notice how you can’t do it if you use too much muscle. You have to stay smooth. Duplicate this effort with a putter in your hands to make a better stroke.

SEE HOW MANY SHOTS YOU CAN PULL OFF WITH ONE WEDGE
By Chris Como
Conventional wisdom in pitching is that you use different clubs to change trajectories. For example, use a 60-degree lob wedge for the soft, floating shots and a 50-degree gap wedge for those low checkers. That’s fine, but I’d rather see you get versatile with just one club. Spend this winter using your sand wedge to hit a variety of pitch shots. Try to hit it super high; make the ball grab and stop; see if you can get it to run out once it lands. Why only one club? It helps improve feel, and that’s super important in the short game. You get more control over your angles of attack and experience different kinds of contact. When it comes time to play again, you’ll have so much more confidence and flexibility with that one club, and your scoring should improve because you’ll be more comfortable in a variety of short-game situations. As a bonus, practicing with one wedge this way will eventually help you be more versatile with all the clubs in your bag. You’ll have so many more tools to navigate a round of golf.
Chris Como is one of Golf Digest’s 50 Best Teachers in America.
FINE-TUNE YOUR PUTTING SETUP NOW!
By Charley Hull
With putting, even the most subtle changes can feel really awkward at first. That’s why it’s smart to make them in the offseason. Be prepared that your putting might get worse before it gets better, but you can’t ignore the importance of fine-tuning—especially your setup. One of the most important things I concentrate on in practice is eye positioning. You should check to make sure your eyes are either directly over the ball or just inside of it, otherwise you’ll probably struggle to hit the putt on the line that you see. You can check your eye positioning by simply setting up for a putt and dropping another ball from your eyes to the ground. Wherever it lands is directly below where your eyes are set. I’ve been working on getting my eyes just inside the ball I address, rather than directly over it. I roll it on line better this way. Give it a try.
Charley Hull won the LPGA Tour’s 2016 CME Group Tour Championship.
USE THIS CROSS-HANDED DRILL TO DISCOVER CONSISTENT CONTACT
By Cameron McCormick
I started coaching Jordan Spieth when he was 12. His swing was idiosyncratic in many ways—his shoulders were dramatically open at address, he’d flare the club inside on the takeaway, his left elbow was bent nearly 40 degrees at the top—but he produced consistent contact that allowed him to shape the ball both ways. As a young teacher, this really challenged me. If I imposed too much traditional swing philosophy on this phenom, surely I’d mess him up. For the first time, I appreciated the idea that the only position in the swing that truly matters is the bottom.
To get my students to understand impact, I often tell them to think of the swing as a large circle traced by the path of the clubhead. On a perfect strike with an iron, the bottom of this circle occurs after the ball is struck. That’ll make a perfect divot. An effective drill to achieve this is to grip the club cross-handed and hit punch shots. That means for right-handers, the left hand is beneath the right as you see here (large photo, above). Swinging cross-handed can be strenuous on the shoulders, so start with 30-yard punches. If you’re flexible, you can work your way to full swings with any iron. You can even use plastic balls in the yard if your course is closed. Like magic, this drill cures two common swing problems: a premature release and getting stuck. I’ll explain how.
Most amateurs go wrong by reaching the bottom of their swing too early. This premature release, also called casting, leads to chunks and tops. Golfers with this issue need to get the shaft leaning forward at impact—the hands slightly ahead of the ball—to shift the bottom of their swing circle forward. When golfers practice with the cross-handed grip, the top hand has a tendency to push the handle toward the target, creating this desired impact position. Remember this feeling when you go back to your normal grip.
A problem more typical of better players is getting stuck, when the hips unwind so fast on the downswing that the club gets trapped behind the body instead of staying in front of it (photos, above). From here they will hit a lot of blocks to the right, or sometimes snap-hooks if they over-correct with the hands. Because the wrists are restricted with a cross-handed grip, these moves become almost impossible. The weight of the clubhead pulls it in front of the body on the downswing. Now the club is in front of the golfer at the bottom, exactly where it should be.
Cameron McCormick is one of Golf Digest’s 50 Best Teachers in America.
TRAIN TO STRIKE A POSE
By Justin Thomas
When I watch amateurs rehearse before hitting a shot, a lot of times I see really nice-looking swings. They look smooth, in no hurry, and they don’t stop until they’ve made a nice wraparound finish. Then they step up to the ball and swing, and it looks short, quick and off-balance. What happened? Well, I’ll let the sport psychologists tackle that one. Rather than focus on that, I want you to pay more attention to what you’re feeling as you make those nice practice swings without a ball. I hope you’ll be doing that a lot around the house this winter. See if you can swing at a pace that allows you to get into a finish position like you’re striking a pose. Here I’ve got my weight on my left side, posting on that leg, and my shoulders and chest are fully rotated. I could stand like this for hours. What I did was swing at a pace where the club was moving its fastest just past impact. The momentum of this acceleration carried me into this pose. Do that over and over, and it will eventually take hold when you get back on the course.
Justin Thomas was the PGA Tour’s Player of the Year for 2017.
A SWING DESIGNED TO CURE THOSE FAT AND THIN SHOTS
By Jorge Parada
The reason you’re not hitting it as solid as you like might be a lack of extension. For right-handers, the right arm should be straightening as the clubhead strikes the ball and continuing to extend post impact. When it stops extending or folds before impact, it’s really difficult to catch the ball in the center of the clubface. There goes your consistency. The common result is the club crashing into the turf behind the ball (fat) or catching it on the upswing with the leading edge (thin). You can train a better golf swing this offseason by making half-speed swings with your right arm only. The weight of the clubhead will support the feeling and motion of the right elbow pushing down as you strike the ground. This feeling and look of extension will continue well past impact.
Jorge Parada is one of Golf Digest’s Best Young Teachers.
DON’T HIT THAT BALL, HIT THE NEXT ONE
By Matt Wilson
This is going to be the year you finally start hitting your irons the distances you’re supposed to hit them. How? You’re going to use this winter to learn to swing through the ball, not at it. If you have plastic or foam balls and can work outside, address a ball with your iron, but place a second ball down an inch closer to your target. When you swing, put all your attention on hitting the second ball. This will get you to strike the first ball solidly, and keep the swing going. After a while, take the second ball away, but pretend like it’s still there and try to hit it. Even if you can’t—or won’t—sdwing outdoors, using the “ball in front of the ball” visualization is a great way to put your attention on the target side of the ball. You’ll feel like the clubhead is moving low along the ground after impact—that’s how to pick up a full club on iron shots.

Considering the very optimal/optimally golf present thoughts might be hard. You might believe you may just produce high priced gift thoughts since golfing can be a costly game. Usually do not feel that this frequent misconception. In restaurants and at online retailers, there really is a great deal of selections which is sure to overpower you. It's undoubtedly you may find something depending on your allowance. Besides fiscal elements, the persona of the receiver is really a most important element when picking the present.

The 2018 Gift Guide For Law School Grads
UPDATED FOR 2018! NEW ITEMS AND SOME 2017 CLASSICS RETURN. The law school odyssey is coming to a close for many students this year, and before the focus shifts to studying for the bar exam and staring blankly into the middle distance contemplating disappearing job prospects, these graduates deserve some gifts.
Obviously, the best gifts for a newly minted J.D. would be “comprehensive debt relief,” “job offers,” or “straight cash, homey.” Unfortunately, you may not be able to deliver these gifts — at least not in amounts that anyone wants — or you may just not care that much about the graduate.
So we’ve compiled some gift ideas, ranging from serious to specious, for you to consider.
Before we begin, a quick policy statement: ATL is not being paid to promote any of these products, but when available from Amazon, the products are featured with affiliate links, meaning that ATL receives a small commission from Amazon if you buy something through that site.
I broke things down into categories. You can jump to a section through this table of contents, or you can scroll at your leisure:
Office Equipment Gizmos The Case Toys & Games Booze Non-Alcoholic Drinkers Jewelry Books Clothes Art
Office Equipment
If your graduate is lucky enough to have a job lined up for after the bar exam, consider office accouterments. A bare law firm office is one of the saddest scenes in the world. Levenger makes a handsome desk set that can be purchased in whole or in part to spruce up an office. The “bomber jacket” theme rests comfortably between modern and throwback. And they can decorate this set with their personalized pen set. Which they can use on their Ruth Bader Ginsburg stationery.
For a slightly more “old school” look, here’s a burgundy oak set from Amazon. This set is a little cheaper and includes a letter opener, and what gift is complete without a sharp object? Though some lawyers should not be anywhere near sharp objects.
It’s always a good idea to try to stay in shape while staring blankly at a screen with a standing desk and companion treadmill.
On the lighter side, there’s this paperweight with words every lawyer can live by. There’s also the Legal Decision Maker Desk Paperweight that allows a lawyer to cede all decision-making to the Fates. And here’s something for the nagging client asking for something for free.
Gizmos
A lot of people have Apple Watches. But those are kind of cheap looking. Here’s a smartwatch that looks professional. And yes, this is actually a picture of a smartwatch.
Straddling the gap between office equipment and gizmos is this “Law & Justice” pen that can convert to a stylus for touchscreen devices.
Does your grad want to stay in shape but not look like an 80-year-old woman? Either this FitBit accessory or this one from Kate Bracelet will do the trick.
The Case
The classic law school gift is a briefcase. But the days of the hard-sided rectangle of doom are in the past. A soft-sided, elegant bag that can store a laptop with room to spare is the order of the day. Kenneth Cole makes just such a bag in brown, black, and tan.
For a more vintage look, here’s a retro messenger satchel.
And if you feel compelled to purchase a hard-sided briefcase, Alpine Swiss offers an expandable briefcase with pockets for modern essentials like a smartphone.
One more option is the iPad case. For example, this leather iPad Pro case from Snugg. Or if they’re on the Surface Pro 5 train, here’s a case.
Toys & Games
People love Funko Pops and there are some available for your fictional legal heroes. Like Lawyer Morty. Or She-Hulk in lawyer attire. There’s obviously a Matt Murdock too.
And, of course, there’s Passing The Bar, the board game designed to help the graduate overcome the next hurdle in their lives. Or the “Game of the Year” award-winning LAWSUIT! Board Game. How about some Cards Against Lawyers?
Maybe golf is your grad’s game? If so, there are legally-themed golf balls and divot repair tools out there.
This isn’t so much a “game” I suppose, but Mental Floss created Law School in a Box tagged “All The Prestige For A Fraction Of The Price.” Which is better than the new InfiLaw motto: “Nulla pretium eadem auctoritate.” We’ll see how good my Latin translator widget is.
Booze
Lawyers like to drink. They don’t call it a “JD” for nothing. But as a graduation gift, a case of PBR tall boys seems a bit gauche. It’s time to drink classy.
Is a lawyer having a good day or a bad day? This wine glass will let everyone know.
It is an indisputable truth that “Bourbon is a great way to alcohol.” Caskers, a spirit distributor founded by Harvard Law grads, offers a Whiskey Club, providing a selection of craft whiskeys.
Sadly Bender Bound’s federal reporter volume that can also hide a flask of a favorite beverage appears to be discontinued (though you can still get a handsome Sherlock Holmes volume or this Edgar Allan Poe collection to perform the same task). But you can still get your law grad a commemorative flask!
Non-Alcoholic Drinkers
If the grad’s liquid drug of choice is caffeine, there are some cute legally-themed coffee mugs out there. For example, this Supreme Court case mug displays famous cases when cold, and shows only shortened names when filled with hot liquid. It’s like the blue mountains on a Coors Light in reverse! Another mug with the same qualities is the Disappearing Civil Liberties mug, which shows the Bill of Rights when cold and erases those getting compromised daily when filled up and hot.
Or for the more honest out there, we have this World’s Okayest Lawyer Mug.
Jewelry
This is, admittedly, not my best category to set up since the only scenario where I’d wear a ring is if I’ve, in fact, won a Super Bowl. Thankfully I have colleagues who can help me out on this one.
Jewelry for Counsel makes, well, jewelry for counsel, such as necklaces in a variety of styles, as well as earrings and cufflinks featuring the scales of justice.
Here’s a scales of justice charm with an inspirational graduation message. There’s also this one for the grad who believed she could.
Our own columnist Niki Black has an array of jewelry available at Legally Boho. I was drawn to this clockface bracelet. Nothing like a clock on your wrist that never moves to remind you that you could be billing more!
Books
The hackneyed option is Oh, the Places You’ll Go! But come on, let’s get original. Maybe it’s my newfound interest in the legal significance of Dr. Seuss, but I’d go with Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories. The tale of Yertle’s unrealistic demands at the expense of the minions he trods upon is just the thing to prepare the grad for a career in Biglaw.
Now this book is awesome! All the author’s New York bar exam notes illustrated with delightful cartoon stick figures. The New York Bar Picture Book may not replace their bar prep course, but it’s a fun and useful study aid.
How about the collected wit and wisdom of Mark Twain on lawyers?
There’s also The New Yorker Book of Lawyer Cartoons if your grad is the sort who wants to say, “Hey, I’m a lawyer, and I’m also pretentious.”
You can also, of course, pick up Supreme Ambitions by our own David Lat.
Clothes
Everyone needs socks.
Look, the law school graduate probably already has some professional attire — they did interview after all — so maybe you should get them something to wear when they relax. For a day every six months or so.
Like this Better Call Saul t-shirt. For It’s Always Sunny fans, they can proudly proclaim their specialty in bird law. And while many law grads shuffle off to an Am Law 200 firm, for the small or solo inclined, here’s a Nelson & Murdock shirt.
For the dressier occasion, these “Equal Justice” cufflinks are available on Etsy
Art
This poster of the Supreme Court’s female justices is a sharp addition to a legal office. And this Thurgood Marshall painting is legitimately awesome.
How about lawyer refrigerator poetry? Perhaps you feel this is more literary than artistic, but admit it — your refrigerator poetry is more for show than publication isn’t it?
Look, when it comes to art, nothing tops dogs playing poker. Thus, I bring you “dogs being lawyers” in Breach of Promise Suit.
It doesn’t get classier than that.
Feel free to email us other suggestions!
