People being annoyed at Faulkner for killing Roemont and cheering on Shrue is not a double standard. I actually think Faulkner was fully justified, but I also think the move was incredibly stupid. A schism could have happened without the Gulch needing to compromise their own ways of worship, and I guarantee you a younger faith leader will always win out over an ageing and arrogant elder. The main reason I believe it was the wrong move though, is that it's another instance of Faulkner falling prey to more delusions of grandeur--not that he isn't talented or great or whatever, it's that he continuously sets up these grand expectations for himself and acts selfishly and blindly so he can, what, be remembered in the Silt Verses? He's an excellent parallel to Roemont because of this. We even see that he's struggled with his faith since the big battle at the Gulch and especially since he betrayed Carpenter. Faulkner doesn't NEED a gun, he has weapons and a whole ass congregation/religious movement behind him and he doesn't know where the fuck he's taking them.
Shrue isn't a neoliberal, y'all. @melandrops made a good post about it here (hope it's ok I mentioned you & linked, lmk if it isn't) but yeah
Shrue is an excellent parallel to Faulkner. We see them go from relatively fresh-ish politician who's out of touch enough to send godkillers after the Parish--and if I recall correctly, with the blessings of the High Katabasians--then when they start getting more doses of reality they're shown to be flexible in pivoting to other directions. And then, with each new horrifying dosage of reality, pieces of Shrue's willingness to put up with bullshit breaks away; their willingness to continue Playing the Game is shattering as their beliefs and their most sincere feelings about life/society/the world get more radicalized. We see Shrue go from "decent-ish person making too many compromises to stay complacent" to "good person with a clearer view of reality who is in too deep and has to make some big decisions on how to survive." Faulkner has gone in the opposite direction, from "powerless, but a sincere radical willing to brute force and ask questions later" to losing faith and falling into near complacency, albeit complacency of a paranoid variety. Faulkner is now in relative power, and he is willing to betray the people he loves to keep that status quo.
Some folks are a bit too hard on Shrue, imo. One of the most human things ever is the innate need in us to try and protect what little stability we have. Everyone talks big game about being revolutionaries until food and home and our loved ones are at risk. Watching Shrue be pushed and pushed until not even those matter anymore is, therefore, a fascinating and cathartic experience.

Can you do September 15th 🥺🥺
Language Of Birthdays: September 15 - Virgo
[You can find the rest of the series here; or check out my masterlist]
The Day Of Mastery
Those born on September 15 tend to carve out an area for themselves in the world, whether modest or expansive, and then explore its possibilities to the fullest. They have an unusual ability to be specialized, thorough and at the same time aware of the big line and the broader picture. Whether fulfilling the role of professionals, artists, parents, or blue-collar workers, those born on this day seek to master what they do without being stressed or driven. Indeed, their "mastery" is a facile and flexible kind of control rather than the unyielding sort of perfectionism so often associated with the sign of Virgo.
September 15 people may appear to be shy and retiring people, right into their adolescence and even up to age thirty or so but after that period is over, watch out! Time is usually on the side of those born on this day, for they can wait for years, patiently honing their talents, gathering information or developing their ideas in order to one day make their big move.
Though September 15 people are often possessed of an ebullient personality that heartily enjoys the fullness of life, secretiveness is nonetheless characteristic of this day. At certain points September 15 people may wish to hide what they do from relatives, peers, even their mates, and at other times share it intimately and unabashedly. Most often this secretiveness is tied in with maintaining a certain image in the eyes of others. For instance, when those born on this day carry an emotional hurt or injury, they may wish to work on it privately rather than allow it to affect their social interaction.
Most September 15 people display a clear desire to earn money, often lots of it. Wealth as an end is not what motivates them, however, but the recognition of success that is associated with it. Those born on this day generally make no bones about wishing to be rewarded for their efforts and paid what they deserve. The fullness of life, the respect of position and the ability to function freely in society, hold an important if not central place in their lives.
Clearly materialism, in a variety of forms, is a great attraction for those born on this day. More highly evolved September 15 people are able to effect a marriage of the worldly and the spiritual by simply remaining human and kind, and recognising when they have enough. Ultimately, to lead a balanced and meaningful life, those born on this day may need to strip down some defences, preserve and cultivate their idealistic side and remain open to spiritual influences. September 15 people who fail to grow are likely to be increasingly drawn to luxury, comfort and the physical pleasures of the table and bed, while the more principled remain productive and find fulfilment.
Strengths:
Expansive
Motivated
Weaknesses:
Materialistic
Overly judgemental
Advice
Those born on September 15 have to be particularly careful about their weight, so great is their appetite for life. Along with weight gain can come unwelcome stress on the cardiovascular and digestive systems, as well as on the pancreas and gall bladder. Fats and pure sugar intake must be limited to avoid catastrophe, and any overindulgence in alcohol and drugs should be curtailed immediately. In general. September 15 people should try to reign in excessive desires for sensual stimulation. Their energy is well spent on vigorous physical exercise, including aerobics, jogging and demanding competitive sports.
Keep your ethical principals intact; without them you are a leaf blowing in the wind
Your patience and ability to wail will lake you a long way, Resist compromising tor financial reward
Gel a grip on your physical desires; don't let the tail wag the dog

I gotta say how much I love that this DC Limited Series is validating so many of my personal interpretations of existing canon. But of course, I'm talking about Blake — you know me.
I understand that many have difficulty with various inconsistencies in the art, but as someone who has read comics since age thirteen, I find them negligible Unless the company commissioning the series is wealthy, media tie-in comics are invariably slip-shod, with beginner artists and rushed art. Everyone's gotta start somewhere. I do accept the comics as canon and treat some scenes as the visual shorthand they are.
I really love many of the little details such as the Japanese aspects of her home life, along with the emphasis on Pacific Islander cultures, such as love of ocean sports — especially little Blake in a muumuu, draped with beaded necklaces. We also see she was a child in the city while Sienna is holding a rally with the Belladonna's both present and publicly acknowledged. Kali's dialog in a later issue tells us that Blake had fallen under Adam's influence when they still led the organization — so Blake was only eleven or twelve, at best. Clearly, younger Blake had periods where she was on the island. To me, that makes perfect sense, but to explain, I need to back up a little.
At odds with early fandom, I figured that Blake had to come from an upper class family and, if she were an orphan as her equivocation implied, then it was late enough in life that it left her with noticeably elegant manners. There was even a memorable instance in which Blake reflexively corrected Yang's slip in etiquette by thumping her across the stomach. (Just as Kali did to Ghira years later). From the way she holds a teacup to how mortified she was over Sun's behavior, we know manners matter to Blake. I was surprised as anyone else to discover her home still existed.
I was uncertain about her family home for a time until another viewer directed me to the post-episode storyboards. The house and lands are identified as "The Belladonna Estate" rather than, say, the chieftain's lodge. There is also a sepia toned photograph of what might be grandparents standing in front of what looks like the bungalow's portico. Finally we have V5's dialog about the Belladonna's time ending, which usually implies a family has been in power for generations.
The tragic princess story suggests that the island was already colonized by Faunus before Humans "gave" it to them. It's far more plausible, from a real life historical perspective, that Humans found the land inhospitable, full of dangerous wildlife and, most salient, resource poor. After the Faunus uprising, the people of the island welcomed refugees and those emigrating from Human controlled lands. The "gifting" was an underhanded way for Human's to cede authority and agree not to invade. So either the Belladonna's were native (unlikely since the capital name suggests a different culture), or they were Mistrali who married into a ruling family.
A chieftain system like we see in Kuo Kuana mostly closely resembles a constitutional monarchy. In smaller villages or tribes, the ruling body might be a council of elders. In a sprawling Rio de Janeiro city like Kuo Kuana, which stretches across the entire valley, it's likely a set of government department heads. The chieftain acts as a figurehead where compromise and mutual support are desired, but not necessary.
That person also forms alliances with other groups/governments and spearheads trade negotiations. In this system, the chieftain doesn't need to be present for the government to continue running smoothly. This system is completely compatible with the Chieftain of Kuo Kuana serving as High Leader and spearheading long-distance political rallies.
Blake refers to the early White Fang environment as being like a family, which kind of implies entire family groups were involved. But they were not a band of Roma or Sinti refugees continuously fleeing Nazi's and denied settlement everywhere they went (and still are). The way I see it, the WF were essentially a missionary group. Anywhere they went holding rallies, giving speeches, rocking the boat, they would have attracted converts and followers. They would have collected refugees, the elderly, the disabled, children, homeless, all wanting to flee and find new homes. Everyone needed to be fed, clothed, protected from Grimm etc.
There is no way that WF traveled through the winter — that would have been an unnecessary logistical nightmare, and suicidal for family groups. Instead, I imagine the Belladonna's gathered resources, planned travel destinations, organized funding, volunteers and everything else during the northern hemisphere's winter, while back home in Kuo Kuana. The band would then travel from spring to winter, which would be consistent with Blake's claim that she spent most of her life traveling with the WF. Then they would bring everyone back to Kuo Kuana in the fall, get new immigrants settled and so forth.
Let's go back to all those kids. First, the notion that semi nomadic groups don't educate their children in all aspects of life is an example of internalized racism with its roots in colonialist beliefs. All societies educate their children, but prior to the western colonial era, schools took a variety of forms. Some were permanent structures, some were tents, some were a circle of seats in an open clearing.
The materials might be written or oral, the teachers might be scholars, philosophers, priests or rabbi. In older models of education, you might think of it as elementary schooling followed by vocational training that inherently included relevant high school level topics. Regardless of method, the WF's children weren't a bunch of uncouth illiterate wild animals, though I'm sure Remnant's Humans believe exactly that.
Blake's vocational training would have been to a government position — more or less. That would have been history, politics and diplomacy, public speaking, combat abilities (for social appeal and to avoid being assassinated for power), self-restraint and etiquette. Much of that training would have begun when she was very little — some of it occurring subconsciously because little kids are like social sponges. But imagine truly comprehending that as you hit your early teens, that an entire island population will depend on you (even if only as a figurehead).
That is what brings us to the royalty in disguise trope. The most familiar example is Aragorn from LoTR. This trope always begins with the young royal attempting to abdicate from an overwhelming social responsibility, which haunts them whether they choose to go solo, follow another leader instead, or become a hermit. That guilt underpins their actions until they ultimately accept their role in society.
TL;DR; The White Fang did missionary work most of the year, helped new immigrants and planned for next year during the winter, and educated their children the same as any other society does. Blake spent about an aggregate third of her childhood at the family estate before Ghira became Chieftain full time, after which Blake traveled year round with Adam's splinter group. Her original very carefully worded equivocation was true and we're just having the six years of fanon problem.

Why India’s Social Milieu Needs An Urgent Contemplation
India, traditionally, has been offering astounding variety in virtually every aspect of social life - diversities of ethnic, linguistic, regional, economic, religious, class, and caste groups crosscut Indian society, which gives light to its very inclusive, secular and democratic character. But why there has been a social unrest lately?
Tumblr media
India ranks 144th on the World Happiness Index out of a total 156 countries on the list, even behind the likes of Pakistan, ranked 66th, and Bangladesh, ranked 107th.
17th June, 2019, a 24-year old man called Tabrez Ansari was mob-lynched in Jharkhand. He was tied to a pole sometime around midnight, and was beaten brutally till 6 in the morning, and was also forced to chant Hindu sayings. As usual, police arrived late, Tabrez was taken to the hospital, where even his blood pressure was not recorded. He died four days later.
Kashmiri Pandits were victims to a similar unfortunate happening. They were forced to exodus from their own home, and ever since, Kashmir has been even more of a hot topic.
It was a similar mob which chased and killed Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh in December, 2018 in Bulandshahr. He was trying to control a mob that had gone on the rampage after cow carcasses were discovered nearby the locality. The same mob also raised slogans against the police during the unfortunate happening.
Back then, between 2015-2018 specifically, such things were done in the name of cows, an animal which holds a religious significance in Hindu mythology. Considerable amount of such happenings on the name of cow slaughtering frequently grabbed news headlines back then, and as a consequence, consumption of beef in India saw some low. When reports of cow being starved to death in official government shelters started coming in, and also about that stray cattle were destroying crops and farmers were not very pleased with it, politics abandoned cows. It is obvious that cows, along with other animals, need to be protected, also given the fact that dairy products are a must, there needs more to be done to protect and nurse them. But the project of fear and violence that had been started, still continues in various forms.
But, unfortunately, cases of mob-lynchings still take place in our beloved India. The very recent case of Palghar district in Maharashtra, where two Hindu saints, while being in police custody and being taken to Gujarat, were attacked by locals. Reports suggest that the rumors were spread in the area about a gang which abducts children, and on the suspicion of the same, the saints were beaten to death, while the act of police standing quietly beside raised many questions.
A particular section of society, including sections of media, left no stone unturned to give it a communal angle. And there is no denying that there are communal and casteist angles to most of such cases, but there is a larger angle to it. The fact that somehow normal and a routine act it has become to lynch anyone you disagree with, who is outnumbered, is a thing which we need to question. What message are we passing on to the youth? Aspiring to be a global superpower, what are we projecting ourselves as?
The Larger Picture
Tumblr media
Democracy has space for various views, expressing dissent in a dignified manner, solving issues, but no democracy can justify use of violence or any arbitrary means to deal with dissent. The very feeling of people that they too are ours should not be compromised at any cost.
The fact that the frequency of such acts has increased in last few years outlines that a message has been passed on to the society, especially the youth, that to beat up someone who does not agree with you, or who expresses any or some form of dissent is a normal practice. Of course, there also has to be some manner and dignity in which dissent should be expressed in a democratic society. But to suppress dissent brutally should not be a solution in a civil society.
This the reason why a new debate had acquired the headlines for some time about whether and how India has been growing intolerant rapidly, but the media and the viewers, the public, a large part of it, did not pay much attention to it. This was and is, what I believe, still a relevant question to ask and explore.
A considerable section of the youth has grasped that dissent or disagreement can be or has to be suppressed, even if it needs violence, which is more than worrisome. This is very much evident owing to recent JNU Campus Violence amongst students back in winter during anti-CAA protests. And the youth today, is the future tomorrow, which is why this makes it even more worrisome.
This even stops many from expressing their views, fearing that might get beaten up by the people having other views, and by not letting other ideas to be out there in the society, the prevailing ideas of the authorities are being hailed as champions. This is where we are failing as a democratic society. We have stopped or started to prevent asking questions.
A democratic society is always full of different ideas, views and perspectives, that is the beauty of democracy. A democratic society always cleaves up, if a one and only idea prevails in the society, there has to be something wrong, we are never going to realize what's wrong in such a scenario, and we have contemporary examples of such autocracies. And there were reasons why human, with time, switched from monarchy to democracy, he liked the idea of discussing various angles and coming up with one which could be best, as it will cover as many as loopholes, angles and point of views as possible, for the best of interests for every section of the society.
The Core Youth Issue
Tumblr media
India’s 65% population comprises of people aged 35 or below, making it potentially one of the youngest country in the world, but what’s fresh in them?
A child learns most of the civil and moral values at home, he learns what he sees, and tends to practice the same, this is the normal scenario. What he learns through the education system, along with his moral values, is somewhat an outline of what kind of a person one is, how one’s attitude is. And India’s education system has been questioned ever since.
The Indian government’s very own draft education policy tells us that National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) rates 68% of our Universities average or below average, and 91% of our colleges are rated average or below average. These second-and third-grade colleges would have produced generations of average or below average students and scholars.
Today’s youth of India has been in the making for decades. A great deal of efforts must have been put in to finish off all the curiosity and hunger for knowledge and information. The youth no longer wants to understand why a system made them spend lakhs of rupees studying, when at the end most of them could not find jobs which could even earn them Rs.20,000 per month, but still are repaying their education loans. It is the official data released back in 2018 that around 67% families in India survive with a monthly family income of Rs. 10,000 or below.
Those who demand information, who understand their world, those who question the status quo, are the ones who sustain democracies. Can we expect such democratic ideals from the youth of a country where 91% colleges and 68% Universities are average or below average? 65% of Indians might be under the age of 35, but there’s little sign of anything fresh in their thinking. Their minds are not young. They were first burdened with great ignorance, and now they’ve been blinded by communalism.
With 91% colleges being second and third rate, it was inevitable that the youth is kept away from the realm of knowledge. This must have had a large say on why WhatsApp University became so popular, the very messages people received on their private chats must have felt to them that they now had an access to knowledge, the very fact that it was so easily accessible, made it very impactful. Lies and misleading information designed to prejudice them and incite them to violence now began to reach their smartphones as personal texts.
Fear Of Speaking Out (FOMO FOSO)
Our Lok Sabha has passed amendments to Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act last year, that gives authorities the power to declare any individual a ‘terrorist’. After it was amended, many social workers who have worked for the under-privileged for years, and raised important issues which was not in the best of interests for the authorities, have been imprisoned under UAPA.
As an obvious consequence, many have held themselves back to not speak out on issues they would have spoken on otherwise, the fear of intolerance of some sections of the society which may turn ugly and the fear of trolls of social media of the great IT Cell may also have been the reasons for the same.
There was a very popular dissent outrage in the form of protests in the form of anti-CAA-NRC protests. Protests in cities and college campuses took place across the nation, some also turned ugly as violence broke out in certain protests. To counter anti-CAA-NRC protests, pro-CAA-NRC protests were also being held in various parts of the country, which was first of its kind. The national lockdown owing to the coronavirus pandemic has brought the topic to a stop, but during this lockdown, various student leaders of anti-CAA-NRC have been charged under UAPA.
Tumblr media
JP Narayan addressing a rally during JP movement in 1974. Many scholars speculate that the real Emergency started not in 1975, but in 1974.
In the history of independent India, its hard to remember any other popular mass protest where people across the nation came to roads to express dissent to the authorities, only one such example crosses our minds - the JP Narayan movement in 1974, during the time when Indira Gandhi used to be the PM of India, which mostly included students, and was ultimately suppressed after imposition of Emergency in 1975. But owing to a new practice we have accepted of labeling every sound that questions the authorities as anti-nationals or leftists.
India has had a history of patriarchy, which still prevails in many forms. Women in India, historically, have not been provided equal rights and recognition as men do. In such a nation, be it in the name of anti-CAA-NRC, such a large all-women protest of a scale as big as Shaheen Bagh is a very, very rare thing. Irrespective of our political affiances and interests, the fact that historically deprived women actually came out and led a mass protest on their own, which lasted for more than 3 months and has come to a haul owing to the pandemic, this certainly deserved some thoughts.
Motive of the protest, political interests and such stuffs can be and should be questioned, but in the process we should also give some recognition to things which are rare and important.
We all may share different political thoughts, different political affiliations, but at the end of the day, we all belong to one nation, and our ideas should be for the best of interests for our nation and its people as a whole.

A Little Bit in Love
Whitestone Academy is the most prestigious boarding college in all of Exandria, welcoming young men from high society families across the continent.
And, this year, Caleb Widogast.
Caleb is determined to prove himself amongst his classmates and show them, and himself, that he deserves to be here.
Percy de Rolo just wants to feel normal for a change, hard when your family owns the ground the school sits on.
----------------------
I shouldn’t be here.
Caleb had hoped to feel something more than that, the very first time he crossed the gates of the Whitestone Academy. After how hard he worked to get here, everything he’d been through, everything he’d endured just to have the right to study here, he’d wanted something more than the crushing realisation that maybe everyone who’d doubted him had been right.
I don’t belong here. I shouldn’t be here.
The uniforms were a combination of slate and heather grey, as if to match the cold exterior of the building itself, the only colour being the ivy growing up along the turrets and the slight gold edging on the school’s crest adorning every blazer in sight. The school simply looked ancient, the kind of structure that had stood here amongst the hills of north east Tal’Dorei for millenia and would stand for millenia more, defying all kinds of change. Standing in the courtyard was like standing in another time, a time much further in the past.
But it wasn’t that making Caleb Widogast feel out of place. It was the other students.
Though it would be hard to describe the difference between him and them with words, it was so obvious that they could be different species. It was in the way they carried themselves, the way their eyes passed over everything as if it had been all set there for them, all of it a backdrop to their performance. Their uniforms fit perfectly, they held their bags over their shoulders carelessly, they stood tall and confident. Most were human, some elven, some poised between the two. There were even some drow, few and far between, though that was where the variety ended.
They came from money, they came from old families. They’d known since they could walk that this school, the most prestigious school in Exandria, with the most renowned magic department outside of the Solstryce itself, was the place they would be attending.
I really don’t belong here.
Caleb knew he was staring but he couldn’t help it.
He’d sat all of the entrance exams and interviews in Rexxantrum, the closest city to his village, this was the first time he’d actually been to the academy. It had taken ages to get here, hopping on and off trains across half the continent and in that time he’d thought he’d imagined every possible combination of plush carpets, brass sconces and dark wood panelling, leaving him nothing to be impressed by. But in the flesh it was still astounding, like places he’d only ever read about in books.
He took his acceptance letter out of his pocket and read it for what had to be the hundredth time. It was well folded, grime gathering in the creases from his pocket, from how many times he’d read it just to make sure this was all real.
Due to your unique circumstances, please join the Headmaster for a meeting upon your arrival at the start of term.
That last sentence, before the polite farewell, made his chest pinch a little. Unique circumstances. Caleb hadn’t been able to figure out exactly what aspect of him that referred to. Probably all of him, if he was honest.
He wasn’t an idiot. He knew he’d only been allowed to attend this school because of their need to at least be seen acquiescing to changing times. He knew he was a trophy. He knew he was a performance, designed so the people who ran the school could point and say look, our admission policies are perfectly fair. How else could you explain him?
They’d probably pause before allowing Caleb the designation of ‘him’, of course. But still.
Caleb told himself he didn’t care. He was here, after scoring the highest grades in the entrance exams in decades. And he was going to do great things.
The thought entered his head just as he took a corner and collided into someone.
People came from all over the world to attend Whitestone Academy.
Percy de Rolo could have walked.
He didn’t of course, he took the car. That was his compromise with Father who would probably have sent him in the family carriage with a full accompaniment of trumpets to announce his arrival if he had his way. Behold, the next of my line.
Instead he’d been able to look at least a little bit normal. Pretty much all the other boys had shown up in similar ways, a fleet of ridiculously fancy cars with personal drivers, enormous for reasons of showboating rather than to hold all of their stuff for a full semester away from home.
Those golden words, as magical as anything taught within these walls. Away from home. Percy clung to that like a talisman, the idea of most of the year out of the mansion, away from his siblings irritating him like sand in his eyes, away from the eyes of his parents scrutinising everything he did for flaws. A chance to be himself, to go to lessons and join the rugby team and sleep in on Saturdays and eat in a hall full of rowdy teenage boys. A chance to be a rowdy teenage boy.
Percy couldn’t wait. He’d been counting down to this day for years.
He’d just come out of a meeting with the Headteacher, a man he’d already met at plenty of parties at Whitestone. His face when Percy had explained that, despite the requests of his father, he didn’t want one of the handful private tower rooms over one of the two person dorm rooms most of the students would be staying in, had been a picture. But he’d gotten his way in the end.
Percy had a suspicion that would always be easy while he was here. The school was named after his bloody house. But he was determined that this would be the last time he’d do it, the last time he’d use his surname to change the course of things.
He let the heavy oak door shut behind him and started down the corridor, eager to find his room and meet his roommate.
He was already blissfully imagining the mess he’d allow to build on the floor when he collided hard with someone.
Caleb gave a very undignified yelp, his rucksack tumbling to the floor. It burst open on impact, scattering his meagre possessions across the hardwood, his clothes, his books, his toiletries.
“Oh gods, I’m so sorry,” he stammered, throwing himself to his knees and trying to claw it all back together, hoping it would give him an excuse not to look up and never know the face of the person he’d just embarrassed himself in front of, “I just… I wasn’t looking…”
“It was my fault,” a nicely accented voice answered and, oh no, he was bending down and helping him, please no.
Panic surging up like bile in the back of his throat, Caleb snatched his binder from an inch away from the stranger’s hand, desperately hiding it under some books.
Not that it wasn’t going to be around the school soon, he’d had that depressing realisation long ago. But he couldn’t have that conversation with someone he’d just ploughed into in a random corridor five minutes after he’d arrived.
“You can, um… I’m sure you’re busy, I’ve got this… “ Caleb tried to get out, in between chasing down his balled up socks.
“It’s no trouble. I’m Percy by the way, are you just starting today too?”
Realising the general rules of politeness meant he couldn’t avoid looking at him any longer, Caleb gave in. The word that instantly slapped him across the face was gorgeous.
He felt himself sigh on the inside. Was he going to fall into a hopeless crush with every single one of his schoolmates?
Well hopefully they wouldn’t all have such angular jaws, sharp blue eyes and soft brown hair falling into said eyes.
Though, even if they did, they’d probably be bullying him within the first half term. Which should make the crush wilt somewhat.
“Yeah,” he said quickly, after too long a pause, “Yeah, we must be in the same year. I’m Caleb Widogast.”
“Well, I’m glad to meet you,” Percy nodded politely, flashing a smile that Caleb was sure he was going to be seeing in his more hormone fuelled dreams.
“Good to meet you too,” he mumbled, the way he always mumbled when he was nervous, “I’m sorry it has to be...like this.”
Percy laughed softly, finally passing over the items he’d managed to gather up, “I’ll pretend not to know you when I see you next and we can try again.”
Caleb gave a nervous little laugh in return, following his lead, though he was more focused on getting his underwear out of the guy’s hand as fast as physically possible, “Sure. Sounds good.”
As soon as everything was stuffed back into his bag, he took off down the hall, mumbling something indistinct about having a meeting to get to which was, in fairness, true. He left handsome Percy looking bemused under the gaze of the portraits of former headmasters.
Percy watched the red haired boy go, blinking in confusion.
His accent was different to his own, softer around the edges, an upward inflection. Less polished, less sculpted than the peers he’d grown up with. It stayed snagged in Percy’s mind for a long time after the boy himself had turned the corner.
He seemed younger than Percy somehow, even though they were apparently in the same year. His uniform seemed to sit too large on his skinny shoulders, tie done up a little too tight to anchor it in place, blazer sleeves coming a shade too far down his arms. He’d given the overall impression of some nocturnal animal startled awake in the middle of the morning.
His first classmate. Percy had been hoping to make a better impression but still, he seemed nice, if scared stiff of him. He winced internally, hoping that wasn’t going to be how everyone would react to him. He needed to get in ahead of his surname, try and seem normal and make friends before they could get weird about the fact that his father owned pretty much everything that surrounded the school grounds.
He hoped there was still a chance to do that. He hoped his family hadn’t ruined yet another thing for him.
Percy exhaled and checked the freshly printed welcome letter in his hand, with his amended room number. All of the dorms were on the second and third floors and it looked like he was in the very corner of the west wing, amongst the other first years. He mentally orientated himself and strode off to unpack and settle in, hoping idly in the back of his mind that the boy with the unusual accent wasn’t too embarrassed.
If anything, Percy was a little impressed at how many books he’d had for so early in the term.
Caleb still felt a little itchy even after he’d closed the door to the headmaster’s office and hurried in the direction of his new room. It was as if he could still feel those eyes on him, studying him like some kind of specimen, like a stray cat that had wandered in from outside and was a hair’s breadth away from being firmly ejected.
He was told flatly, emotionlessly, that he would change in a separate room to the rest of his PE class and that the only reason he wasnt in his own room was because the school was at capacity, as if Caleb had some kind of contagious disease. He was told any drop in his grades, at any point in the year, not just around finals, would put his scholarship under immediate review. He was told if there was any trouble with any of the other students that the administration became aware of, that threatened the reputation of the school as a whole, there would no longer be a place for him at the academy.
And that he would be immediately placed in the advanced magic classes with the upper students.
The last part had been said somewhat grudgingly, Caleb felt.
He wasn’t quite sure what sort of trouble the administration was expecting, he thought bitterly as he headed towards the west wing, or how he was going to cause it. Probably by existing.
He chanted his room number in his head over and over so he didn’t forget it. Already, he could feel his palms start to sweat in his blazer pockets at the thought of meeting the boy he’d be sharing a room with for the rest of the year. He had a sinking feeling he’d cycle through quite a few, surely no one in their right mind would want to room with the scholarship boy from the back end of nowhere.
Good thing he didn’t have many possessions to move. Maybe he wouldn’t even bother unpacking.
Room 2.04 was the one on the end of the corridor, sort of tucked away on its own. Caleb could already hear voices behind most of the doors, laughing and cheering and chanting, the general celebratory air of the start of the school year and many boys’ first taste of freedom away from home.
Swallowing hard, he hesitated with his hand on the doorknob. Maybe his roommate would be somewhere else, off with the boys he probably already knew from a childhood of high society parties. Maybe he’d have a little lucky break.
Either way, the journey and the grilling from the headmaster had exhausted him. He wanted a bed and the only way to get one was to open the door and pray for a little luck.
He didn’t get it.
Someone was already sat on the left hand bed. Someone with sharp blue eyes, soft brown hair, neat circular glasses. Someone gorgeous. Caleb’s heart hit the bottom of his shoes with a thud.
Percy gave a slight, nervous smile, clearly trying to make the best of the situation, “Uh...have we met before?”

© Sarah Allegra My regular viewers will probably remember that May 12th is Invisible Illness Awareness Day, or ME Day, in my house, for short.  It's a big day in the chronic illness community; it's our Superbowl.  Getting a new photo shot for this May 12th was an enormous challenge and there were many times I was sure it wouldn't happen.  I started planning this months ago, as I seem to always be scrambling at the last minute and I was determined to NOT do that this year.  Then, eight weeks ago, I began getting a recurring fever which took up nearly all my already limited time.  So I downgraded the first concept I had into something more manageable.  And the fevers continued.  This can't possibly last forever, I thought, and came up with another, simpler concept that would work with the time I had left.  And the fevers continued.  So things went on until I was able to shoot this image just three days ago.  Getting an image turned around, even one without heavy compositing, can take weeks for me.  I crammed and pushed my body more than is probably wise considering the fragile state of my immunity, but I got it DONE.  Hah!  Take THAT, ME! This self portrait is drawing from the historic plague doctors and the iconic masks they would wear.  I recently finished re-reading a favorite book of mine, Doomesday Book by Connie Willis, part of which takes place during the bubonic plague of the middle ages.  No mask-wearing doctors appear in it, but the thought was fresh in my mind.  That combined with the current Covid-19 pandemic, the scarcity of masks, thinking about immune systems and how easily they can be gotten around by a determined germ... and this was the visual that came to mind. Of course, a May 12th image wouldn't be complete without it tying in to my experience with having ME (short for myalgic encephalomyelitis; a debilitating neuro-immune disease with no treatment or cure).  This year, I asked myself, how could I explain what it feels like to have an incurable illness to someone who's never experienced such a thing?  For once, a large portion of the world has actually had a small taste of ME, due to Covid-19.  The way Covid has forced you to stay inside, rarely see other people, isolate, protect yourself from any potential germs, taken away your livelihood, these are all hallmarks of nearly every chronic immune-compromised illness.  Except that for us, social distancing will never end.  Our isolation will never end.  We will never go back to work.  This is our reality for the rest of our lives. This is not the life I want to live.  No one wants to live forced into a cage, denied the things that make life meaningful and enjoyable.  But still, this IS my life right now.  Until a cure can be found.  I'd gladly take even a treatment.  But the medical world has almost nothing to offer me or the millions and millions of others with ME (not to mention all the other disabling diseases like MS, fibromyalgia, Crohn's, EDS and so many more).  I cannot break this cage; I cannot pick the lock and let myself out to freedom.  But I can scream inside it.  I can shout and bang on the bars until someone notices; until enough people notice.  And once they notice, they will start demanding freedom for us too.   And maybe, someday, I can actually leave behind this dirty, nasty, bug-infested prison and feel the sun on my face again before I die. Our illnesses are invisible, but we often feel invisible too.  When you drop out of society, only your close friends and family will notice.  People who've never met you have no idea that there's a Sarah-shaped void where I used to be; they simply fill it.  Chronic illness hides you in its shadows as you're unable to leave your house.  I will not be kept secret; I will demand attention and action.  ME is an iron mask and shackles, hiding my identity, my potential and my value as a human being.  I will not be hidden anymore.  The mask is coming off and there WILL be change. If you would like to be a part of this change, please read my blog post for more information about how you can be the ally we desperately need: https://sarahallegra.wordpress.com/2020/05/06/me-and-invisible-illness-day-may-12th/   You can learn more about ME and other invisible illnesses, there's a petition you can sign, the Millions Missing campaign you can join, excellent documentaries you can watch for free, images you can use as your avatar for the day (or longer!), or, if you'd like, you can donate to ME Action, an organization doing great things for people with ME: https://www.meaction.net But if you do nothing else, I ask this of you: believe people when they tell you they're sick, even if they don't look like they are.  Not every illness manifests outward signs.  Just acknowledging that ME is real, despite me (and others) still looking "healthy" on the outside is a huge step forward.  Every person in the world afflicted with these evil, insidious illnesses will thank you, starting with me.  <3 *Personal Instagram: http://instagram.com/artosthebear * Professional Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sarahallegraartistry/ *Blog: http://sarahallegra.wordpress.com *Twitter: http://twitter.com/sarahallegra *Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/artosthebear *Red Bubble shop - a wide variety of items, including affordable prints: http://www.redbubble.com/people/sarahallegra*Etsy Shop - Limited-edition, fine art prints: https://www.etsy.com/shop/SarahAllegraArtistry/ *Sarah Allegra Artistry: http://www.sarahallegra.com

In the Pancreas, Common Fungi May Drive Cancer
By now, you’ve probably heard that your body is teeming with bacteria. Some 100 trillion of them live on your skin, in your mouth and in the coils of your intestines. Some protect against infections and help you digest food, while others can make you seriously ill.
Fungi, viruses and protozoa call your body their home, too. Your fungal residents are less numerous than your bacteria by orders of magnitude, but as researchers are learning, these overlooked organisms play an important physiological role — and when their numbers get out of whack, they can modify your immune system and even influence the development of cancer.
A new study, published Wednesday in the journal Nature, found that fungi can make their way deep into the pancreas, which sits behind your stomach and secretes digestive enzymes into your small intestine. In mice and human patients with pancreatic cancer, the fungi proliferate 3,000-fold compared to healthy tissue — and one fungus in particular may make pancreatic tumors grow bigger.
Researchers were surprised by the presence of fungi in the typical pancreas and immense increase in their numbers in disease. “The pancreas was considered a sterile organ until a couple years ago,” said Dr. George Miller, a surgical oncologist at the New York University School of Medicine who led the study.
But recent research from Dr. Miller’s lab and others had indicated that some microorganisms, such as bacteria, could sneak past a muscle called the sphincter of Oddi, which separates the pancreas from the rest of the gut. Perhaps fungi could also colonize the pancreas the same way.
To find out, Dr. Miller and his team fed mice a species of brewer’s yeast labeled with a green fluorescent protein. The fluorescent marker revealed that the yeast had indeed moved from the digestive tract to the pancreas in a matter of minutes.
In mice, the types of fungi that ended up in the pancreas were usually very different from those that remained in the gut. Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the only varieties of fungi that colonized pancreatic tissue.
One particular fungus was the most abundant in the pancreas: a genus of Basidiomycota called Malassezia, which is typically found on the skin and scalp of animals and humans, and can cause skin irritation and dandruff. A few studies have also linked the yeast to inflammatory bowel diseases, but the new finding is the first to link it to cancer.
The results show that Malassezia was not only abundant in mice that got pancreatic tumors, it was also present in extremely high numbers in samples from pancreatic cancer patients, said Dr. Berk Aykut, a postdoctoral researcher in Dr. Miller’s lab.
Administering an antifungal drug got rid of the fungi in mice and kept tumors from developing. And when the treated mice again received the yeast, their tumors started growing once more — an indication, Dr. Aykut said, that the fungal cells were driving the tumors’ growth. Infecting a control group of mice with different fungi did not accelerate their cancer.
There is increasing scientific consensus that the factors in a tumor’s “microenvironment” are just as important as the genetic factors driving its growth.
“We have to move from thinking about tumor cells alone to thinking of the whole neighborhood that the tumor lives in,” said Dr. Brian Wolpin, a gastrointestinal cancer researcher at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.
The surrounding healthy tissue, immune cells, collagen and other fibers holding the tumor, as well as the blood vessels feeding it all help support or prevent the growth of the cancer.
Microbes are one more factor to consider in the alphabet soup of factors affecting cancer proliferation. The fungal population in the pancreas may be a good biomarker for who’s at risk for developing cancer, as well as a potential target for future treatments.
“This is an enormous opportunity for intervention and prevention, which is something we don’t really have for pancreatic cancer,” said Dr. Christine Iacobuzio-Donahue, a pancreatic cancer researcher at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York.
Nearly 57,000 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the United States this year, but their prognosis will be poor. Three-fourths die within a year of diagnosis, and only about 1 in 10 live longer than five years.
“That’s because we don’t have any screening or methods of early detection for pancreatic cancer,” said Lynne Elmore, director of the translational cancer research program at the American Cancer Society.
By the time the cancer is diagnosed, surgery alone isn’t enough. Standard chemotherapies are very limited, and there aren’t any great targeted therapies, Dr. Elmore said.
The new study also sheds light on how fungi in the pancreas may drive the growth of tumors. The fungi activate an immune system protein called mannose-binding lectin, which then triggers a cascade of signals known to cause inflammation. When the researchers compromised the ability of the lectin protein to do its job, the cancer stopped progressing and the mice survived for longer.
But the interaction between microbes and their hosts is extremely complex, Dr. Miller said, and further experiments will be needed before the new findings can be applied in treating cancer patients. Microbial populations can change in response to a person’s age, diet, use of antibiotics or antifungal drugs and other factors.
“This is intriguing and exciting research,” said Dr. Ami Bhatt, who studies microbes at Stanford University. “But it’s probably too soon to add broad spectrum antifungals, many of which have lots of side effects, to cancer treatment regimens, even in experimental settings.”

Stone is one of the most popular building materials to have ever existed. It has seen implementation within architecture and design ever since the early days of the industries themselves. Ever since the stone age, this material has been king.
And even if the stone was overshadowed in popularity by newer, shinier materials, this material giant is going nowhere any time soon.
Stone has seen a lot of infrastructural implementation over its long history, but in more recent times, it is reserved for a myriad of decoration purposes.
There is just something special about the brute honesty and simplicity of stone. That's what kept it in the limelight for centuries. The fact that it’s dirt cheap, beautiful, and ample in supply also helps its popularity.
As mentioned above, ever since we've started using materials for the design and build of things, we've used stone. So, perhaps we can say that stones' popularity as a building material and design material stems from the start of humanity itself.
It was most famous as a building material in the medieval ages, where fortresses were constructed out of it.
It has remained a popular decoration material for quite some time after that. It’s still one of the most popular articles.
Stone never went anywhere – it's always been a popular choice as a material. The purpose that it served has changed drastically over the years and continues to evolve to this day.
While we are no longer constructing our houses out of stone, we're decorating them with numerous different stone ornamentation and decorations. Rock is appealing due to multiple various reasons.
There are many different kinds of stone. There are many stones if we can say so. Each stone has its very own unique properties and qualities, which can all be boiled down to its practicality.
Not all rocks are priced the same, as you can get a common rock for free, but a diamond might set you back by quite a lot.
But this is where the beauty of stone comes in. It's simplicity, it's honesty, and its sheer variety gives it a special place in our material realm.
Now that we have established why stone is one of the most important materials out there, it's time to get into the implementation of it.
While we don't want to go about building stone houses, building and designing parts of your home out of stone can has its benefits.
It can be cost-effective, depending on the type of stone furniture, and it can make for some of the most beautiful designs in the world.
We've all visited a bar or two back in the day. While wooden bars are most prevalent in modern society, they are no match for the simplicity and elegance that stone bars bring to the "table."
Bars are an essential part of every household as well and make for some dashing kitchen additions.
Every kitchen needs a proper workspace, and bars make a fantastic compromise. You can't only expect this versatile kitchen addition to serving a singular purpose, can you?
Of course, you can't. Bars are universally useful, whether you're looking for additional cooking space or somewhere to have a couple of drinks at. Bars are best topped with granite or marble. Still, people have made some thrilling limestone-epoxy combinations that are to die for.
While stone is known for its gorgeous properties, it is also far superior in wood as a bar top design. While wood is subject to cracking, inadequate maintenance, discoloration, and cleaning issues – stone isn't.
Stone, in general, is a solid material that is easy to clean, maintain, and won't change color in any way, shape, or form.
If you're a little bit tight on the funds but still wish to have a beautiful stone bar in your kitchen, there is no need to worry. Faux-stone or stone foil can be purchased for quite a low price at your local design store or ordered through Amazon.
While it does give the illusion of real stone, it's far inferior when it comes to function, so remember to be careful!
It's best left to the architectural experts who are designing your home, as stone can be quite heavy and provide some infrastructural issues if mishandled. That's why stone has been less popular as a form of wall decoration.
But every problem comes with a solution, and the answer to the weight issue might be a little bit more creative than you think.
People have invented molds that are applied to a thin level of concrete, which is covering your wall, imitating stone perfectly.
Concrete is stone-hard and is a great wall material. Molding it into stones, polishing it, and painting it to look like the real thing will give it that new shine that nothing else can achieve.
Concrete is also insanely cheap, and the whole process is low-budget in nature.
If you're looking for something perhaps even cheaper than real stone imitation, you might be interested in 3D stone plastic stickers.
Not tacky at all if you ask us, these stickers are virtually stuck to your wall and imitate stone perfectly. Just don't expect them to be as resilient as stone, as these stickers are quite fragile.
If you're looking for yet another wall decoration opportunity while utilizing stone, you're going to love the idea that has been around all of 2019. Stone shelves!
Stone is not traditionally a shelf material, as the stone is pretty heavy. But, topping off your wooden shelves with stone slabs is not only trendy, but adds visuals, functionality, durability, and sturdiness!
You can't imagine a bathroom without a porcelain toilet or sink, but why stop there? Tiles have been out of fashion for quite some time now, and that is because they're quite dull.
Concrete is really in right now, due to the resurgence of the Brutalist movement.
That's why concrete has found its way into your bathroom. Concrete sinks are not only really simple-looking but are also very beautiful and durable.
While we don't recommend flooring your bathroom with concrete, perhaps a big, beautiful artificial marble slab might be more in your taste. Incorporating stone into your bathroom doesn't only have some exceptional aesthetic value, but some great functionality as well.
Stone is not only a durable, sturdy, and beautiful material – it’s also one of the best natural insulators. If you're looking to keep your bathroom heat-insulated, stone is the way to go.
Stone is also great at retaining heat, which will keep your bathroom warm a lot longer than thin tiles.
Porcelain or god forbid, metal bathtubs have also been out of fashion for quite some time. The latest hit in the design world is stone cut bathtubs.
While these might be one of the most expensive tubs out there, they are a great marriage of functionality and beauty.
While we've mentioned stone floors in our previous addition to this list, the potential really doesn't stop in your bathroom.
While there are molds for your walls that turn concrete into the gorgeous aritificial stone decoration design, there are molds for quite a lot of other things as well.
One of these molds is stone molds for your backyard. Why would you spend a ton of money on bricks to make a walkway to your house if you could just mold one out of stone?
If you don't fancy faking stone and are looking to make a gorgeous walkway, you can use real stones.
Now, you don't want to use an expensive stone such as marble or granite for your walkway, but you can utilize common stones. Common stone walkways give out a comfortable rustic vibe that is sure to persist over the ages.
Stone walkways have been present in our history for quite some time, and are incredibly persistent and durable. They're also dirt cheap to construct.
If you're looking for a little bit more finesse in your stone walkway, you can enhance it with some thrilling brickwork or some strategically placed plants.
There is no reason to stop at walkways either, as you can include as much stone into your backyard as you want. Stone walls, stone summer houses, and even stone pool ornamentation.
Stone is very easy to incorporate into any enviro
Stone has been a cornerstone of the universal design and architecture industry and shows no sign of stopping anytime soon. Even if the stone is such a popular material, it seems to be keeping up with the times.
It has found new life in the interior design world through adaptation and aesthetic value alone.
Humans have been making man-made stone for quite some time now, and we're aching to see what the next big hit is going to be. Who knows what the future holds for this solid material.

Jungian Theory & American Politics
We’re living through a crisis in our democracy. There’s a lot of upset, and we are needed. We are needed to be people who can endure this time, and we are needed to be people who can transform this time. And that transformation doesn’t come about by denying that there is upset happening. There’s a difference between transcendence and denial.~ Marianne Williamson, June 27, 2018
Tumblr media
So far, the twenty-first century has been tumultuous for the United States in ways that many could not fathom even just a few years prior to it. In a quick succession of challenges, each more daunting than the one before, Americans faced uncertainty at the turn of this century. On its very eve, many were preoccupied with concerns of Y2K. Soon after the new year dawned without such disaster striking, the results of a presidential election came down to a verdict by the United States Supreme Court; something no twenty-first century American had ever before personally experienced. And of course, less than a year after that president took the oath of office, there was the unprecedented attack by terrorists on U.S. soil. This event left a deep mark on the soul of the nation, creating a demarcation within the psyche of society and leading us forward into a war on terrorism that is yet without end. As is expected in times of war, safety is compromised in mind and body creating fearful thinking, a sense of lack, and a need for protection.
In addition to soldiers, time has marched onwards, as have our daily lives. Such living now includes technology that has fundamentally shifted the way in which we produce, share, and interpret information. Never before has there been such ease in communication over vast geographical distances. The rise of social media has provided many ways of “staying connected” and engaged with others. Engaging more frequently over a wider variety of topics than ever before, we are currently dealing with the paradoxical results of unification and division of such engagement. During the most recent presidential election campaign, foreign enemies intentionally used social media to further such division among Americans. Enemies both foreign and domestic continue grow division, with great ease, in a society in which social media rules its foreground while it holds perpetual war in its background. These days, it seems most on social media have become soldiers in a political war of words while simultaneously begging for peace. Is it any wonder then why so many feel so much despair, even as their personal lives may hold many blessings?
Though times may be dark, all is not lost. Calling upon Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung as a trusted guide, it is possible to see such darkness as an instrument of healing, transformation, and enlightenment. Jung’s theory of personality provides a useful map in leading the individual and society away from a dichotomy of either/or thinking and into more expanded possibilities of “both and” in terms of personal growth and the greater good. Introspection that includes the examination of the archetype of the shadow provides opportunities to take personal responsibility individually and collectively for the sake of personal and political well-being.
The Human Psyche
Jung describes the human psyche, or mental functioning, as consisting of different levels of awareness (Vaughn, 2013). Jung envisions three levels of personality in such a way that first separates consciousness,or one’s field of awareness, from that of the unconscious using a line of division known as the “threshold of consciousness” (March 2018). The unconscious, or psychological functioning of which one is not aware, is further distinguished by Jung in the aspects of the personal and the collective. The personal unconscious is composed of elements from one’s individual experience while the collective unconscious is composed of elements which are believed to be inherited and shared by all humans (Jan. 2016).
Tumblr media
Archetypes: Inherited Patterns
Jung’s theory of the collective unconscious derives from his work among the Pueblo Indian tribes residing in Arizona and New Mexico as well as among tribes that inhabited the islands of Oceania and inhabitants of Africa and Asia Oceania (Adamski, 2011). The collective unconscious is seen as the instincts (biologically conditioned response patterns) and archetypes (symbols, images, and patterns of thinking and behavior) inherited from our ancestors. Adamski (2011) builds upon Jung’s theory of the collective unconscious through quantum psychology, “which recognizes that quantum processes occur in the biological system and they are capable of recording information about the life of the individual in its ontogeny, but also save life process in the generational dimension.” Borrowing from Popp and Beloussoy (2003), Adamski explains that physical evidence suggests that “living matter has a ‘quantum logic’ which enables the optimal use of ‘information’ from the environment to its own stability and to escape from chaos…Biological material grows rapidly in the electromagnetic field, wherein a result of field coupling and coherent states of matter created in the process of life is required. This means that biological matter creates a system that absorbs electromagnetic impulses, and stores and uses them to create permanent psychobiological structures” (2011).
While archetypes (universal patterns) reside within the collective unconscious, they structure consciousness and “hold potential for human experience mediated in interactions with the environment across cultures and the ages” (Vaughn, 2013). In her lecture on archetypal affects, Anita Green Ph. D. reminds us of Jung’s understanding of the body-psyche connection (2015). Jung believes that our conscious is formed by the content received from the four mental functionsof perception, thinking, feeling, and intuition. Perception tells us that something exists while thinking tells us “what” exists; feeling allows us to judge whether something is pleasant or unpleasant, and intuition is the perception of the possibilities contained within a given situation (Adamski, 2011).
Tumblr media
Jung explains, “When one reflects upon what consciousness really is, one is profoundly impressed by the extreme wonder of the fact that an event which takes place outside in the cosmos simultaneously produces an internal image, that it takes place, so to speak, inside as well, which is to say: become conscious” (1961, p. 382). Jung also states, “For indeed our consciousness does not create itself – it wells up from unknown depths. In childhood it awakens gradually, and all through life it wakes each morning out of the depths of sleep from an unconscious condition. It is like a child that is born daily out of the primordial womb of the unconscious” (1968, p. 935).
Ego and Persona
The most commonly understood aspects of Jung’s personality theory within the mainstream are that of the ego and the persona. The mechanism of self-identity, or ego, can be seen as the center of one’s awareness. Vaughn (2013) describes ego as “the focal point of consciousness manifest in the cognitive-sensory functions. The ego mediates between subjective and objective realms of experience with a focus on decoding cultural symbols and adapting to acceptable norms of behavior.” Vaughn then explains persona as the packaging of the ego or its “public relations firm” and that for Jung, this is a role a person plays, and is responsible for advertising to people how one wants to be seen and received” (2013). Jung describes the persona as a compromise between the individual and society, that creates a two-dimensional reality; the persona is often referred to as a mask worn during interactions with others in society (January 2016). Though it is not uncommon for people to suffer from an inflation of the persona, problems arise when people over-identify with this social mask, which can become obstacles in the process that Jung called individuation (Feb. 2016).
Tumblr media
The Self and Individuation
According to Jung, “I use the term ‘individuation’ to denote the process by which a person becomes a psychological ‘individual,’ that is, a separate, indivisible unity or ‘whole’” (Jung, 1968, p. 275). In other words, individuation is the path to self-knowledge or self-realization that is essential for healthy functioning of the personality (Feb. 2016). According to Vaughn (2013), the self can be viewed as the main archetype among the various archetypes and is responsible for “implementing the blueprint of life through each stage of the life cycle and bringing about the best adjustment that individual circumstances will allow…The goal of the self is wholeness or individuation.” Vaughn also explains that while the ego is “privy to purely conscious preoccupations,” the self has “access to a much wider realm of existential experience” (2013).
Complexes and the Shadow
Despite frequent mainstream references, less understood aspects of Jung’s theory of personality among the general population are that of complexesand the archetype of the shadow. Within the personal unconscious, contents may come together to form a cluster of constellation that Jung refers to as a complex (Jan. 2016). Vaughn (2013) describes a complex as a “group of associated ideas bound together by a shared emotional charge or feeling toned response,” and explains that complexes are “the means through which archetypes manifest themselves in personal psyche, the collective group psyche, and cultural environments.” Borrowing from Stevens (1991), Vaughn states that a complex exerts “a dynamic effect on conscious experience and on behavior” and also notes a “close functional relationship exists between archetypes and complexes, in that complexes are personifications of archetypes” (2013). While a strong complex is easily noticed by others, “the person himself may not be aware of it” since the root of such complexes reside in a deep level of the psyche within the collective unconsciousness. Therefore, complexes can be seen as “subpersonalities” which have potential to “exert powerful control over one’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors” (March 2018).
The mental function of feeling is an essential aspect in the formation of such complexes as well as other parts of the personal unconscious, since it is by way of the emotionally charged pieces of our personal history that elements of personal unconscious are formed. These aspects of our personal history unconsciously impact our perception and thinking in many areas until they are brought into awareness and integrated. Green (2015) refers her audience to the words of Daniel Stern (n.d.) as a reminder that “emotion serves as the central organizing process within the brain.” One cannot directly view the unconscious. The only way to see the unconscious is to see its aspects reflected in someone or something else (Feb. 2016). As we encounter such reflections, Green notes the importance of the body-psyche connection in that we will feel sensations in the body that point to emotionally charged pieces of our history stored within the unconscious (2015). Tuning into such physical sensations and emotional charges with curiosity allows opportunities to explore one’s personal unconscious when encountering its reflections.
Tumblr media
For a firmer grasp of the personal unconscious archetype of the shadow, it may be helpful to see the ego functioning as a gatekeeper. As such, the ego determines which contents are brought into the awareness and which contents are repressed or ignored, thereby relegated to the unconscious realm of the shadow. The function of the shadow is to represent “qualities opposite to those manifested in the persona;” these two aspects of personality “complement and counterbalance each other” (Vaughn, 2013). Although this aspect of the psyche is unconscious, as Vaughn states, it “remains dynamically active” because it carries the rejected aspects of the ego, and “for the ego to own its contents is painful, if not terrifying” (2013).
Since the shadow contains those emotions, qualities, and impulses denied by the ego of self-identify, it is often viewed by the mainstream as simply the negative aspects of self. However, the shadow compensates for the “pretension of the persona” just as the persona “compensates for the antisocial propensities of the shadow” (Vaughn, 2013). Additionally, during one’s formative years, the ego may have actually rejected the incorporation of qualities that could actually be viewed as positive. For example, if one’s family or culture operated in ways that did not include any discussion of emotion, that quality may then be repressed by the ego and relegated to one’s shadow. While the ability to discuss emotions could be seen by others as a positive and even healthy quality, in such a case, this positive quality would be contained within one’s shadow rather than integrated as part of the ego. Therefore, the shadow contains qualities that many would deem as “positive” as well as “negative” ones.
Hidden Treasure
Because the shadow contains positive qualities and acts as a counterbalance to the two-dimensional social mask of the persona, it could be considered in less negative and more neutral ways by the general population. In fact, it may be healthier and more effective in the individuation process for one to see the shadow in more neutral terms. While it may be more of a challenge to appreciate the shadow for the resources it provides, it would most likely serve us well to keep in mind that, as Jung put it, “your shadow contains gold” (March, 2018).
For the majority of people to continue to view the shadow in simply negative terms is limiting in that it creates an even deeper aversion of the shadow. Aversion creates feelings of disgust and contempt, which are counterproductive to individuation when faced with reflections of one’s own shadow. These reflections are most often delivered to us in our dreams and through our projection of these qualities onto others. The greater the number of individuals engaging with the shadow in such negative ways, the greater amount of disgust and contempt are generated in personal exchanges.
Holding Others in Contempt
Even the most cursory examination of today’s media demonstrates how prolific such contempt for “the other” is expressed within our public sphere. During a recent forum, American Enterprise Institute president Arthur Brooks states, “We don’t have an anger problem in American politics, we have a contempt problem in American politics.”  Supporting his claim using a definition of contempt by social psychologists as “the utter conviction of the worthlessness of another human being,” Brooks also shares insight provided to him by the Dalai Lama as to a remedy for contempt:  the practice of ‘warm-heartedness’ (2017).
Tumblr media
In recounting two recent examples of political commentary created by people to whom she is connected on social media, Hess (2018) states “I begin with a fairly large assumption that…(a) supermajority of persons in the United States is suffering from a perceptual malady: we do not know what we do not know, besieged in our quests for certainty. We seem to be less and less able to perceive others accurately, in our multimedia-driven fear and habits of blame. We struggle to allow anyone’s suffering to be legitimate in its own terms, held with compassion. “Shadowdancing” is a three-dimensional key to this malady that…invites a vulnerability to what many call shadow– or our greatest hidden potentials/passions and our greatest fears/sacred wounds…shadowdancing leans into a natural perceptual process called projection….But we can learn to reverse this outward process and withdraw our attention back to the sensation of fear and its refusal in our own sub- or unconscious. Shadow and projection name the dynamic two-dimensional movement human beings have made toward deeper understanding for ages. A third dimension can hold them in a transformative way.” Hess offers readers an invitation to consider shadowdancing within a “container/contained ecology” as a way to enter vulnerability and withdraw projections “back into the Self toward wholeness, connection, and transformation” (2018).
Ignoring Complications and the Ugly Bits
In a recent TEDTalk, historian Yuval Noah Harari discusses fascism as well as what he sees as the greatest danger to liberal democracy. Harari notes how our different identities and loyalties create internal conflicts and complications, and explains, “Fascism is what happens when people try to ignore the complications and to make life too easy for themselves. Fascism denies all identities except the national identity” insisting that the individual has obligations only to the nation. “Fascism makes people see themselves as belonging to the most beautiful and most important thing in the world -- the nation. And then people think, ‘Well, they taught us that fascism is ugly. But when I look in the mirror, I see something very beautiful, so I can't be a fascist, right?’ Wrong. That's the problem with fascism. When you look in the fascist mirror, you see yourself as far more beautiful than you really are” (2018).
Know Thyself, Heal Thyself
To prevent a twenty-first century rise of fascism, Harari advises us not to allow ourselves to be manipulated by those who control the data. He explains that the enemies of liberal democracy have a method in doing so. “They hack our feelings – they hack our feelings of fear and hate and vanity, and then use these feelings to polarize and destroy democracy from within...but they cannot create these feelings out of nothing. So they get to know our own preexisting weaknesses. And then use them against us. And it is therefore the responsibility of all of us to get to know our weaknesses and make sure that they do not become a weapon in the hands of the enemies of democracy” (2018). Getting to know our individual and collective shadow allows us to integrate and transmute the qualities held within these shadows.

The Antidote: Compassion, Integration, and Transmutation
Application of Jung’s theory of personality along with practices such as shadowdancing and warm-heartedness offer us an antidote to the epidemic of contempt we’re currently experiencing in American politics and everyday conversations. Such practices allow us to hold ourselves and others in ways that allow us to raise the level of conversations beyond the limited dichotomy of “either/or” and into greater possibilities of “both and.” The greater the number of individuals taking personal responsibility in their own psycho-spiritual growth and individuation process, the greater it will benefit society as a whole. Through the effective use of Jung’s map, we can become miners of the gold contained within our shadows and enjoy the wealth it provides us individually as well as collectively as we march onwards within and beyond the twenty-first century.

ALIENATION FROM NATURE AND RISE OF TECHNOLOGY
Part of the reason for this loss of connection between man and nature in contemporary society is that the value of nature to an individual is usually based on the culture and upbringing this person has experienced – therefore, in urbanised societies, where exposure to nature is limited, people gradually become desensitised to nature as a concept of identity. In addition to this, the rise of technology and decrease of natural spaces, education of nature is almost exclusively through screens – with physical barriers and garnished with dramatization. Wildlife documentaries have a predominant role of entertainment, and whilst education is still included, it is often manipulated and dramatized. This culture of nature has also developed the natural world into a ‘human construct’ where there are various meanings of nature in different contexts; this may be association with purity and untouched land, fear and danger, economy, and commodities. One of the dominant views of nature of Western culture is the notion that nature is a pure and uncontaminated sanctuary, where humans haven’t tainted the land with urban stress and exploitation and humans can enter as a form of meditation or self-discovery – an irony of this, however, is that ‘sanctuaries’ are often commercialised and manipulated for profit, and corporations capitalise on the notion of peace by implementing it in various settings, this is known as green grabbing. However, this is not the only example of this, as the concept of ‘fortress conservation’ is becoming more common in order to protect and retain isolation in ecosystems. Regardless of what category modern western perspective falls into, the general perspective reveals that urbanisation has led to humans viewing human and nature as separate. Technology and the developments of it have severely manipulated the complexion of the biosphere, where a change in dynamic has impacted a huge variety of aspects of human life. In modern technology, the natural world is often mimicked through games or experiences, capitalism commodifies the sense of purity and serenity that comes with nature – simulations of the natural world have separated us by screens. This disconnection could have impacts of biophobia, where the real nature is seen as scary or undesirable, but a simulated nature is safe. In this way, the simulation of nature has become a comforting environment, while true nature is unfamiliar – despite the visual similarities. These games capitalise on the human need for serene environment and their disconnection with nature from urbanised environment. In urban society, human health is often linked to environmental condition – urban design therefore needs to focus on light, ventilation, and greenery. (L. Jackson, 2003)[1]
Many modern scholars have begun to explore what technology and artificial intelligence has in store for humanity, through its significant shift, AI has disrupted human’s connection with nature on an even larger scale. It can be said that humans are actors in this dynamic, not passive – our daily lives have become so entrenched by technology and media that many aspects of what it is to be human has been manipulated. We are in a revolution where humans are willingly being controlled and maintained through technology. There are both positive and negative implications of this – on one hand, agriculture, industry, science, medicine, and communication have all been developed (Reflections on Artificial Intelligence for Humanity), however, it has also stunted some aspects of growth of humans in a western society. For example, the alienation from nature can have adverse effects on how humans perceive the natural world, each other, and their own identity, as well as psychological wellbeing. In ‘Humanity 2.0?’ (S, Chan, 2008)[2] Sarah Chan presents the perspective that all technological advancements should be embraced by humans in the flow of their natural development. She criticises the ideas that these technologies may compromise humanity and transform us into something we are not, ‘jeopardizing our species’. Within this article, Chan recognises the usefulness and privilege of enhancements brought about by technology, and the fact that the use of these technologies is the next step of human evolution, using the quote “If it wasn’t good for you, it wouldn’t be enhancement” (J. Harris, 2007 in Humanity 2.0?)[3]. Chan argues that it Is a sense of technophobia and fear of unknown that is the root of these concerns, that through development of these ideas such as genetic manipulation, humanity will become more advanced, and fear of this technology will diminish. There is a concern of ethics and morals here, these advancements discussed are often associated with a loss of identity, people may argue that the essential qualities of humanity will be wiped. Chan argues the contrary, that it is these manipulations that will in fact allow for humanity to gain an even larger understanding of identity and expression. “The advent of human genetic enhancement, then, signifies not the end of the human race, but rather, the next step in the continuing process of human evolution.” It can be noted that Chan successfully questions the morals associated with this theme of loss of humanity – she uses examples such as modern medicine such as vaccines, regenerative therapy, prosthetic limbs, cosmetic surgery, and corrective surgeries which are all ‘enhancements’ of humanity which the majority of people have no moral dilemma with – it then provokes the question of how far can humanity be influenced by technological developments before we lose our connection to the natural world and what it is to be human. This article summarises that what it means to be human has always been shifting with time, and this new age of technology is only a continuation of that, it is a manifestation of human’s interest with power, efficiency, knowledge, and health.  There are fears of loss of genetic diversity, and also fragmentation of humanity – technological advancements manifest itself into a lot of contemporary fears and stresses. Sarah Chan describes what makes us human as the ability to reach and manipulate our reality and aspirations, to express ourselves through science and self-reflection. In this way, Chan argues that technology will not change who we are as humans, due to the fact that humans are the ones engaged with this development of technology – it is historically what man wants from this world.

COVID-19 recovery is an opportunity to tackle worsening climate crisis: New report
Smoke from wildfires blankets downtown Calgary. (Shutterstock)
We’re at a second of overlapping planetary well being emergencies: COVID-19 and local weather change. Each have their origins on the intersection of humanity and the remainder of the pure world, each exacerbate pre-existing well being inequities and each have the power to convey well being programs and economies to their knees.
The well being impacts of COVID-19 are well-known — these of local weather change much less so. A brand new report by the Lancet Countdown on Well being and Local weather Change, a world collaboration amongst 38 main tutorial establishments and U.N. companies, exhibits that because the globe warms people are experiencing growing warmth emergencies, wildfires, extreme climate, bother with meals yields and potential for novel infectious ailments.
We have to “multisolve” — handle COVID-19 and local weather change on the identical time, on the lookout for the candy spots the place a single measure can ship the triple-win of bettering public well being, contributing to a sustainable economic system and decreasing the drivers of future crises.
The Canadian coverage transient related to the Lancet report has solutions for doing simply that.
Shield our houses
The report exhibits a file 2,700 heat-related deaths occurred amongst folks over the age of 65 in Canada in 2018. Globally, the final 20 years have seen a 59 per cent improve in heat-related mortality in older folks.
The financial prices are additionally rising: work hours misplaced on account of excessive warmth publicity had been 81 per cent increased in 2015-19 in comparison with 1990-94. Instant motion is required.
Many Canadians have had their residing circumstances made precarious via COVID-19. In its fall funds replace, the federal authorities introduced $1 billion in funding, via the Fast Housing Initiative, for use for the development of modular housing and reasonably priced housing items.
All the tasks funded via this and different federal building and retrofit packages ought to be evaluated for his or her location relative to flood-prone areas, their skill to make sure sufficient air flow and air filtration to deal with warmth emergencies and wildfire smoke, and their alignment with our objective of residing in a net-zero nation by 2050.
Clear the air
We should additionally clear the air of the air pollution we will management. The Lancet report exhibits that in 2018 there have been 7,200 untimely deaths in Canada associated to positive particulate air air pollution from human-caused sources. That is 4 occasions increased than the variety of deaths from transport accidents.
The biggest portion, discovered by the Lancet to be over 30 per cent, was on account of emissions from households, equivalent to burning gasoline for heating. That implies that power environment friendly retrofits can save lives!

Air pollution from vehicles, vans and different transport was proven within the report back to be accountable for 17 per cent of deaths on account of positive particulates in 2018. It’s also accountable for 30 per cent of Canada’s greenhouse gasoline emissions. Investments in zero-emission automobile infrastructure and collective transport, equivalent to electrical automobile charging stations and electrical buses are large wins for well being.

Energetic transport investments have the additional benefit of accelerating bodily exercise, which reduces power illness. A current research confirmed that in comparison with those that commute by non-public motorized automobiles, all-cause mortality was decreased by 20 per cent in those that cycle, and 10 per cent in rail commuters, with stroll commuting related to a seven per cent decrease incidence of most cancers. In the UK, investments in biking infrastructure have been discovered to ship about 5 British kilos of well being and social advantages for each pound invested

Construct resilience
Lastly, we have to improve the resilience of well being programs. Along with making certain health-care buildings are ready for floods and fires by way of siting, sufficient air flow programs, and extra, we should take one other take a look at provide chains.
We realized via the pandemic that producing private protecting tools (PPE) at house helps to make sure its availability within the face of provide chain disruption. We’ve additionally seen the disadvantages of not being able to provide the main COVID-19 vaccines at house.
With local weather set to drive additional health-related emergencies in addition to financial crises a shift from a tradition of effectivity to one among resiliency is required. We might lower our healthcare-related footprint and scale back the chance of provide disruption by switching to reusable medical provides equivalent to robes and blood stress cuffs.
The proposed nationwide formulary, an excellent first step in direction of a pharmacare system, may also function a listing of important medicines thought-about for home manufacturing. Co-ordinated work between the general public and the non-public sector, doubtlessly together with the creation of recent crown companies, might assist guarantee provide of essential gadgets, because it did throughout the Second World Battle.

A hinge second
Canada is now stuffed with armchair epidemiologists, however few of us might draw an approximation of the nation’s projected warming curve. A leap in understanding is required: this forecast should inform planning in all sectors.
Canada is warming at about double the worldwide price. Below all possible emission situations will probably be about 1.8C hotter than a 1986-2005 baseline by the point in the present day’s newborns are of their twenties, rising to 6C by the point they’re of their 60s if we don’t urgently lower greenhouse gasoline emissions.
Because the Lancet report says, except rapid motion is taken this can threaten not solely lives and livelihoods, but in addition compromise the hospitals and clinics we rely on.
COVID-19 is a hinge second in human society — a time to pause, to reset. Though well being employees have been appropriately lauded via this pandemic for the care they’re offering, it’s changing into clear that from carrying masks to retrofitting our houses, all of us share the duty, and the honour, of saving lives.
