Sentence Starters:
Can we stop for a moment? I think I need a break.
Coz I don’t think Scott’s ever uttered those words in his life!
Water Rescue
Fandom: Thunderbirds Rating: Gen Genre: Family/Hurt/Comfort Characters: Gordon, Scott, Virgil
Ahaha, probably not something he’d say if he had any choice in the matter, no!  That being said, five months after you sent this and I’m finally prodding this far back in my inbox (see, I get around to prompts eventually!).  I might even have some idea why he might be saying it.  Maybe.
Now... can I even find the original prompt list for this...  Oop, apparently it was on the wrong blog, but found it eventually!
Injured Sentence Starters
“Can we stop for a moment?  I think I need a break.”
Gordon hit the edge of the pool and caught the side of it, pulling himself vertical and looking over at his eldest brother, who was clinging to the side and looking absolutely exhausted.  It wasn’t an admittance Scott ever made lightly, but while he had his pride - especially in front of younger brothers - he did have some level of common sense.
The tongue-lashings Gordon had delivered in the past when he’d pushed himself beyond his limits in the pool and ended up cramping and in need of rescue himself might have also, finally, sunk in.  You couldn’t save someone else if you were in trouble yourself.
He eyed Scott anyway, because he was looking a little pale and he suspected he’d still pushed further than he should have done with their water training, but didn’t hesitate to agree.
“We can take a break,” he agreed.  “Get up on the poolside and take a breather.”
Chlorinated water plastering his hair down even more effectively than the handfuls of hair gel employed every morning, Scott nodded.  He really was looking pale, now Gordon was looking at him properly, and he lingered back in the water as Scott turned and grasped the edge of the pool with a white-knuckled grip.  Biceps rippled, Scott’s arms tensing in preparation of the pull, and then Gordon was surging the foot or so between them and catching his brother as his grip failed and he vanished beneath the surface.
Yanking Scott back up, Gordon trod water as he patted his brother’s cheek.  His eyes were closed, face drained of all colour, and in the back of his mind Gordon retracted anything he’d thought about Scott learning not to overdo it.  Then again, he should not have been exhausted to the point of fainting from what they’d done so far.
He frowned.
“C’mon, Scott,” he urged, fingers slipping down to press against the pulse point beneath his brother’s jaw.  It was still there, slightly thready but not enough to be a concern.  Wet fingers in front of a partially open mouth registered steady breathing, so with a scowl he returned to tapping Scott’s cheek insistently.  “Wake up.”
There was a cough and a splutter, and he grasped at the side of the pool again, allowing his own legs a respite from treading water as Scott blinked his way back into consciousness.
“Gords?”  His name was a little quiet and unsteady, confusion lacing though in the background.
“You fainted,” Gordon told him bluntly.  Scott blanched, as though he wasn’t already pale enough, and Gordon’s suspicions rose.  There was something his brother wasn’t telling him.  “Training is over.”
The sigh he got in response wasn’t surprised, rather resigned.  Gordon tightened his grip as Scott reached for the side of the pool again.
“You’ve been dunked enough,” he said a little sharply.  “I’m going to swim you back to the shallow end and we’ll get out there.”
“I can-”
“Absolutely not.”  Sometimes, Gordon couldn’t believe his brother’s stupidity.  “Come on.”  He kicked away from the side, bringing Scott with him; despite his words, his brother didn’t fight his hold.  It didn’t take long to get them back to the shallows, where both of them could stand easily on the bottom.  “Out.”
Scott grasped the side again, muscles rippling as he pulled himself up.  Gordon took no chances, boosting him from the side until he was clear before bringing himself out alongside.
Any attempts his brother might have made to escape were scuppered by a hand on his wrist, keeping him by the poolside.
“Do I need to give you the water safety lecture again?” he demanded.  “You do not push yourself to the point of collapse in the pool.  Ever.”
“I know.”  Scott looked slightly unsure, and Gordon paused.  “I was fine, Gordon, I promise.  I don’t know what happened.”
Gordon didn’t like the sound of that at all; it made sense insofar as the fact that he also hadn’t noticed anything was wrong until immediately before, but if Scott was fainting for no apparent reason, then that was potentially something a lot more serious.
“You didn’t forget to eat earlier, did you?”  Scott shook his head.  “Sleepless night?”  That headshake was less certain, but knowing his brother’s sleeping habits, that didn’t unduly surprise Gordon.  Still, it was concerning.  He reached out for Scott’s pulse point again.
Scott didn’t pull back.
“How are you feeling now?” he asked, feeling the thrumming pulse under his fingers.  It was stronger than when he’d been unconscious, but still wasn’t quite right.
“I’m fine,” Scott promised.  “Whatever it was has passed.”
“I’ll be more convinced once I’ve got a scan on you,” Gordon muttered.  Scott baulked at the idea, but he held firm.  “Scott, if you’re ill, we need to know.”  Just the idea of his brother having another fainting spell in the air, at the controls of Thunderbird One, or even in a danger zone...
No, Gordon couldn’t let that happen.
“I’m not ill.”  On the plus side, Scott clearly felt fine enough to be a terrible patient.  That being said, it wasn’t a particularly high bar; keeping him pinned down if he was coherent was always a challenge.
“If you can stand up without a headrush or fainting again, I’ll consider believing you,” Gordon pointed out, bringing his hand back from Scott’s throat and making his way to his feet.  “Think you can?”  He held out his hands for Scott to take.  His stubborn brother didn’t accept the help, so Gordon snatched his wrists anyway.
It turned out to be a good move, because Scott swayed slightly - not much, but more than he’d ever do if he was completely healthy - as he reached his full height.  Gordon narrowed his eyes.
“Infirmary or den?” he asked, less because he wanted to give Scott an out and more because the den was closer.
“Den is fine,” Scott replied, predictably.  Well, if he wanted to play it that way.
“Den it is,” Gordon agreed, and raised an eyebrow at Scott’s suspicious look.  “What?  I gave you the choice, didn’t I?”
The noise Scott made in his throat was just as suspicious as the look, but his brother didn’t reply.  Gordon grinned at him and led the way, not letting go.  Scott stumbled after him until Gordon ducked underneath his arm.  The stairs were, in Gordon’s opinion, too much of a risk, so he dragged his brother towards the elevator and tried not to think about the trail of water they were traipsing all through the house.
Hopefully Grandma would understand.
Still, he snagged a towel in passing and slung it around his neck until the elevator spat them out upstairs.  It was deployed on Scott upon arrival in the den, because the sofa cushions were only water resistant and Grandma got very upset if wet bodies sat on them for any length of time.
Scott grumbled protests that he was capable of drying himself, which Gordon ignored entirely, before sinking down entirely too gratefully onto the nearest sofa.  Gordon hurriedly got rid of the worst of the water from his own body before he threw himself onto the sofa next to Scott.
“Virgil,” he called, prodding at his wrist comm and leaning sharply out of Scott’s reach as his brother reacted.  “Could you bring a medscanner to the den?”
“What happened?”  A grease-covered Virgil appeared in miniature, scowling up at him in concern.  “Weren’t you and Scott doing water training?”
“Until Scott fainted,” Gordon agreed, ignoring the hiss of his name from said older brother and extending his arm so that it was out of Scott’s reach.  “As you can see, he’s lively again now, but-”
“You have no idea why?”  Whether Virgil was finishing his sentence or just guessing, he wasn’t sure, but either way it was correct.
“Yup,” he agreed.  “So if you could..?”
“I’m on my way.”
The call cut out just as Scott managed to grab his wrist.
“Gordon.”
“What?” he asked.  “You thought I was going to just leave you here while I fetched it so you could escape?”  From the frustrated look on his brother’s face, that was exactly what big brother had been hoping for.  “If you didn’t want Virgil involved, you should have picked the infirmary, bro.”
He was fairly sure the growled words under Scott’s breath were ones from the military-dictionary, and not the Grandma-approved one.
“Love you, too, bro.”  He pushed himself upright again and gave his brother another once-over.  Scott really did look fine, and the chances were high that it was a random one-off - probably his sleep schedule catching up with him at last - but Gordon couldn’t shake the unease.  “Look, Scott.  Just humour me, okay?  If the scan doesn’t show anything then that’s fine.  I just want to be sure.”
Scott sighed, reluctance oozing from every pore, but he didn’t argue.
“I’m fine.”
Well, he didn’t argue much.
“That’s for the scanner to decide.”
Booted feet all but running across the floor cut off any retort Scott might have been building, and Virgil appeared.  Somehow he looked even more grease-stained than his hologram had, but Gordon was more interested in the medscanner he was clutching.
Scott endured it with bad grace.
“How long was he out?” Virgil demanded.  Gordon shrugged.
“A few seconds,” he said.  “Thirty, tops.”  It wasn’t long, but it was long enough.
Virgil’s hum seemed to agree with him as the scanner beeped.  Three pairs of eyes focused on it.
Nothing wrong.
Well, technically it was flagging up some minor exhaustion - no doubt from the training - and an advisory about sleep and electrolytes flashed up, but there was nothing dramatic.
Virgil scowled at Scott.  “Electrolytes,” he said.  “And sleep.  I’m grounding you for twelve hours, and it’ll be longer if you don’t spend at least half of them in bed.”  He brandished the scanner when Scott’s mouth opened.  “Preferably all of them.”
Brown eyes glanced to Gordon, ignoring the protests coming from their big brother.  “Get him to his room while I fix something up.”
“F.A.B.  Come on, Scotty.  Bed time.”  He slipped off the sofa and grabbed Scott’s arms.  “Up you get.”  Blue eyes glowered at him in frustration, but with the dreaded g-word hanging over him, Scott was reluctantly compliant.  Already he was steadier on his feet, to the point that Gordon was happy to risk the stairs up to the bedrooms.
There were, thankfully, no more incidents, and Scott sank down onto his bed with another glare.  Gordon joined him, uninvited but equally not dismissed, and they sat shoulder to shoulder as they waited for Virgil.
The family medic didn’t take long, appearing with a sports bottle in one hand and a glass of water in the other.
“Drink all of it,” he instructed, pressing the bottle into Scott’s hand.  Big brother made a face but obediently took a few gulps.  “Once you’re done, get into pyjamas and go to bed.”  The water was placed on the bedside table, alongside a pill.  “If you can’t sleep, take that.”
Scott’s shoulders slumped but there was no protest.  Then again, Gordon probably wasn’t the only one who had thought about the what-ifs of a repeat on a rescue.  Scott was many things, but sometimes he could see the same dangers the rest of them were scared of.  Not always, but sometimes.
“Gordon Cooper Tracy!”
Oops.  Grandma must have found the trail of water.  He glanced at his older brothers, who both looked vaguely sympathetic - a first, but then he’d had good reason this time - but offered no support.
“I’d say that’s my cue to leave,” he said, dragging himself to his feet.  He pressed a hand to Scott’s shoulder.  “See you in twelve hours, Scotty.”
There was no agreement - then again, Scott staying in bed for twelve hours seemed less likely than John willingly going to a party - but there was a small quirk of his lips into what could be a smile.
“Thanks, Gordon.”
Gordon huffed.  “No more fainting during water training.  I’m getting fed up of having to drag you out at the end.”
“This was the first time!” Scott protested, but Gordon didn’t bother answering that; the other occasions might have seen him still conscious, but they’d otherwise been no better.  Instead, he gave a jaunty wave to his eldest brother, and offered Virgil a sloppy handover salute - big brother was his responsibility now - before slipping out of the room to face Grandma.
Scott was in good hands.

“What are you doing?” Levi’s voice filled with concern as he rushed behind his wife. His hands instinctively reached out to grab her hips, stabilizing her on the wobbly step-stool.
“I just wanted the casserole dish your mom got us. I know we don’t use it often, but I figured if she was coming, we probably should,” Laura explained. She placed the ceramic dish she had retrieved from the top shelf onto the counter and stepped carefully off the stool.
“I would have gotten it for you.” His strong hands cascaded down her arms as if reassuring her.
“I’m fine. I’m completely capable of getting a dish.”
“You should be resting! Lily and I can make dinner.”
Laura chuckled; her fingers grazed her still flat stomach. “How about I take you up on that in another few months.”
The nervous father-to-be rested his hands over hers. “I just want to do everything I can to support you.”
“I know. Thank you.” She stroked his jawline tenderly. Her face glowed as she continued in a low tone, “Our Little Sprout still has a lot of growing to do. After all, they're still just a raspberry.”
Levi leaned into her touch, letting her cradle his face.
“Plus, we haven’t told Lily yet. You don’t want her to get suspicious,” Laura offered with a raise of her brow.
A chuckle formed in his chest. “I can’t wait to tell her.”
“Tell me what?” Asked their curious daughter, who entered the kitchen with Luz by her side.
“Uh.. your grandmother is coming,” Levi stumbled to say.
“I already knew that.” Lily stared at them, blinking her big innocent eyes.
Luz smirked, the girl’s gaze shifting between Lily and her parents.
Laura cleared her throat and attempted to busy herself in the kitchen. “Aren’t you two supposed to be studying?”
“We finished,” Luz quickly affirmed. “Don’t forget, we’re brilliant!”
“That I did know,” Laura smiled. “Do you want a snack?”
“Sure,” the girls agreed in unison.
“So, this secret,” Lily probed lightly, a smile perched on her lips.
“It’s nothing,” her mom shook her off.
“So, it’s not that you're pregnant?” Luz stated plainly, watching the two adults carefully for any signs that would give them away.
“LUZ!” Lily’s eyes widened, giving her friend a warning look that came too late.
“Oh, or was that our secret?” Luz shrugged. “Oops.”
Lily looked hesitantly toward her parents, who shared the same shocked expression. “Sorry, if we ruined the surprise.”
“How? When?” Laura stuttered, unable to get her questions out.
“So it’s true?!” Lily’s eyes grew wider.
Levi wrapped an arm around Laura, placing a kiss on her temple.
“It’s true." Laura leaned into her husband, letting the warmth of his arms comfort her. “You’re going to have a baby brother or sister.”
Lily threw her arms around her mom and step-father, pulling them into the tightest embrace. “I’m so excited. I’m going to be a big sister!!!”
The pair of adults embraced their daughter. This wasn’t how they had planned on letting her know, but as long as she was happy, that was all that mattered to either of them.
Laura sniffled back her tears as the gesture was released. She stroked her daughter’s hair. “How did you figure it out?”
“Mom!” Lily asserted as if the question needed no answer. Noting the inquiring expression on their faces, she sighed and continued. “For starters, you stopped drinking coffee a few weeks ago, you didn’t order wine when we went to that fancy restaurant last week, you and dad are always whispering and touching your stomach—”
Levi grinned as he listened proudly. The first time she called him "dad" would always be the most memorable, but he would never tire of hearing it. He loved his step-daughter as if she was his own.
“–you had a mysterious ‘stomach bug’” Lily emphasized this using air quotes.
Her cheeks warmed, under the list of evidence. Laura laughed softly, shaking her head at their perceptive child. She reached out, cradling her daughter’s face, stopping the list of incriminating evidence. “You truly are the most brilliant girl in the world.” She bent over, brushing a kiss on her daughter’s forehead. “This changes nothing. You are still my world, my beautiful, remarkable, Stargirl.”
“I know.” Lily beamed. “But, now you’ll have a little comet, too… or was it, little sprout?” She raised a knowing brow at them.
“Geez, kid.” Levi stood in awe. “Next time, there’s an unsolved crime, the FBI may want to call you! You’re quite the sleuth!”
She shrugged and looked toward Luz. “We’ll have to check our schedule.”
“We’re kind of a package deal." Luz nodded. “I figured out the bit about the nausea not being a stomach bug.”
“Fair enough,” Levi laughed.
“How about instead of me making a snack, we go get ice cream to celebrate?” The girls were jumping at the idea before Laura finished her question. “Go get your jackets.”
As the girls left, Levi pulled Laura into him. The two shook their heads, still in disbelief. “I guess the secret’s out.”
“I guess so.”
“Are you okay with that?”
“I should have known better;” she tilted her head in consideration. “Lily is not your average tween.”
“Neither is her mother.” His gaze searched her face. “You know, there isn’t anything I wouldn't do for you or Lily.”
She nodded. “I know.”
“All you need is ask, and it’s yours.” He stroked her cheek gently.  “You and Lily showed me what love is and helped me find myself when I didn’t think that was possible. You brought me hope and light. I was lost until you found me, wandering in the darkness and not even aware of it.”
“Levi.” His name slipped from her lips as her eyes misted over.
“You are my world, Laura. You, Lily, and our Little Sprout. I would  travel the ends of the earth if it would bring you comfort or joy.” Cradling her face, he brushed a kiss on her forehead. “I love you.”
“I love you, too,” she whispered in reply as their foreheads rested together. “How did I get to be so lucky?”
“I’m the lucky one.” His lips met hers softly.
A delicious warmth washed through her under his kiss. His tenderness never ceased to leave her dizzy, even before the pregnancy.
They broke apart as the girls giggled behind them.
Levi’s thumb ran along her cheek, gathering the tears that slipped out. He brushed one last kiss on her forehead. “I meant every word.”
Laura found his hand and gave it a gentle squeeze as they shared a quiet moment. No words needed to be said; they already had everything they could want. With one final shared smile, she turned back to the girls. "Let's go get that ice cream. I'm thinking extra sprinkles all around."
The girls cheered and ran toward the door. Laura and Levi followed closely, hand in hand.

SWTOR: New player help: Contending with bugs
It's not a bug, it's a feature! It's working as intended! As you play SWTOR, you will notice that...things don't always go as expected. Here are some helpful tips for new players (and more long term players too) to try to help handle some of the most common bugs you will find in the game.
First thing: report the bugs you encounter. If nobody knows something's going wrong, it can't be fixed.
Everyone including free to play players can now use the in-game bug reporting system. How?
1. Go into your chat box (usually at the upper left of your screen and type /bug)
Tumblr media
2. This should open a window that will allow you to type a short description of the bug you are seeing. Describe the bug. Make sure you mention 1) exactly what you were doing and 2) what was not working. For example:
"During the introduction scene for the flashpoint "This is Way Too Long," the character "I Don't Like You" does not have a head."
3. Press ' submit.'
Keep in mind that you will not get a response or any direct help from a bug report. This is to let the developers know what is not working in the game, so they can hopefully fix it.
2. Wait a little while after there's a new patch or game update
When there's a new game update or patch (you will know because you have new files that will automatically download when you launch the game), don't jump right into the new content with your favorite best character. Wait. It's hard, I know, but wait. The general trend over the past few years has been that new patches and updates always have bugs, and sometimes they're doozies.
It helps to have a "me first" character or two - perhaps a clone of your main - to wade into new content on the first day or week if you really want to see it. That way you can see the new content without being completely angry that it's messed something up for your characters or isn't running quite right.
3. Keep an eye on the Bug Reports section of SWTOR.com and the SWTOR Twitter account.
Tumblr media
Even if you are not a subscriber you can still read the Bug Reports forum (I would not recommend the rest of the forums, though). There's usually a running list of known bugs for each patch listed at the top of the page. Also keep an eye on the SWTOR Twitter account. You can read it without being a registered Twitter user, and it will let you know when the game is going down for maintenance or an update.
4. If you are facing a bug that is making it impossible to complete a quest you need for story progression, you can reach out to SWTOR customer service for assistance. If you are a subscriber, press the little gears icon at the top of your screen, choose "customer service" and then "request help." If you are not subscriber, you can reach support at [email protected]
SPECIFIC STRATEGIES FOR COMMON BUGS
1. Help! My abilities bar got unlocked and I cannot get it to lock again!
When this happens, all your abilities will 'float' or move from their placements, which understandably makes it hard to fight. How to get around this:
1. When you are NOT IN COMBAT, press CTRL+U. All of your abilities bars/maps/etc. will vanish. Don't panic. This is the way.
2. Press CTRL+U again. Everything should come back. It may take a moment. Wait.
2. Oh no! My character's stuck in a rock!
Or on a cliff, or under a box, or up a tree. We've all been there. Go to your chat box (upper left, usually).
1. Write /stuck in the chat. This will either move your character to a place where they aren't stuck, or it will kill them and put them back at the nearest medical base.
2. What's that? Stuck isn't working, or you just used it and it needs to cool down? You can try using Quick Travel to travel to a nearby medical base.
3. Still nothing? Try porting to a stronghold, your ship or the Fleet.
4. Try logging out and logging back in.
3. What? I can't click the blue thing.
This bug has shown up all over the place, where an objective will be lit blue, but unclickable. I've found a few places where nothing I do makes this work.
1. Try changing instances.
2. Try logging out and back in.
4. This is a great cut scene...why is it freezing?!
Several years ago this bug was so severe in the Sith Warrior and Imperial Agent stories that only customer service could resolve it. It seems better now, but here are some ideas.
1. ESC out of the scene. Now try to start the scene again by clicking on the NPC /objective/whatever is the scene starter.
2. Can you guess? Log out and back in.
3. Close the game and try re-launching.
4. Try lowering your graphics settings in the game. Don't know why this works, but it did sometimes.
5. My character is frozen in a weird pose.
Just laugh at it, take a screenshot and share it with your friends so they can laugh. Typically this will not affect actual combat and will go away on its own eventually.
6. I want to romance Lana Beniko, Koth Vortena or Theron Shan in KOTFE...but I've heard things about the romance vanishing.
There are two general ways the romances in KOTFE get borked:
1. A patch happens before the romance is locked in (chapter 9) and all the player's flirts from chapters 3-8 are reset. The game thus forgets you were trying to romance Lana and you don't get the romance dialogue option in chapter 9. I've also heard of Koth and Theron romances vanishing, but not as often. The solution is to NOT play through chapters 3-9 of KOTFE when there's a patch happening. My general tactic is to play those chapters straight through, and not stop until I get to chapter 10, to make sure the romance is locked and won't be interrupted by a patch.
2. The player misunderstands the really poorly framed dialogue wheel in chapter 9. There's a moment, pictured below, where the camera faces Theron Shan, and there are choices that say "I need to see one of you" and "I need to see one of you" [flirt]. IT IS NOT JUST REFERRING TO THERON. If you are flirting with Lana or Koth and want to lock in their romance, DO NOT CLICK ON THE FIRST CHOICE (which is helpfully lit up here for your reference). YOU NEED TO CHOOSE THE [FLIRT] HERE, as well as the [flirt] in the conversation when you are alone with your companion of choice.
Tumblr media
When your actions or conversation choice will start or end a romance, from KOTFE onward, you will receive a pop up warning that looks something like this.
Tumblr media
Caption: This choice will begin a romance with Lana Beniko. Are you sure you wish to proceed? CONTINUE - CANCEL Once you have this scene, MAKE SURE you finish chapter 9 entirely so your choices don't get wiped out in a future patch!
7. My companion is stuck in place and won't move.
There you go, charging into the fray...there's your companion, lingering awkwardly at the threshold and not participating. Oops. You can usually wake them up by sending them away and then bringing them back. Easy ways to do this include:
1) Send them to sell junk (press N. Go to your companion who is with you. Press the little icon near their name to get them to sell the junk. Depending on the legacy perks you have purchased they will be gone for between 5 and 30 seconds)
2) Summon another companion, any of them, and then summon back the one you want.
3) It didn't work? Sometimes companions do seem to go on strike and you will probably just want to summon another to continue playing. This is a good reason to remember to have more than one companion at high influence, if you can, so you can switch as needed.
8. My companion keeps falling over.
Sternly tell your companion it's not time for a nap. Kidding. They really don't care. Any time is nap time. The steps in #7 should work to wake them up again.
9. I'm trying to loot something and it's telling me "out of range."
First, are you sure it's your loot and not some other player's? If it's yours, you can sometimes pick it up by walking away and then returning. Other times, look for someone else nearby to loot. I've on occasion found things unlootable, which is frustrating.

Era’harel
Concert AU
Some backstory that’s unlikely to come up naturally so I’m putting it out here. I actually wanted to do more bits, leading up to how Selene lost her  teaching job but this seemed long enough on its own, so that’ll likely be up tomorrow.
TW for Sexual Assault, Death, Violence, Rape, and Shitty Parenting
tagging @feynites for reasons
Era'harel joins clan Ralaferin when he is still a toddler.
His name was different before then. Sweeter, like music when it rolled off of his parents tongues.
But he can't remember it, when he is found. He tries to, tries to remember the way his parents smiled at him, and held him, and how they would call for him near cobbled stones and ratted ceilings. He recalls the warmth, and the love, and the way the sunlight streamed through endless branches of a giant tree in a courtyard. But no matter how he tries, he can not recall the words, in the end.
As he grows, he doesn't think it matters anymore.
“Era'harel,” They call him, as he is taught to string a bow and clean a corpse and sit quietly for a hunt. Something to make him useful, something so he can earn his keep in the clan with no parents and no family to care for him. Some of the members are kind, and he bounces from aravel to aravel wherever room can be spared. Wherever there is a spare bit of love he can snag, or warmth he can gather and tuck away for later.
He is thirteen when he goes to his first Arlathvhen.
It is loud, and raucous and he loves it.
There are so many other elven children to run with and dance with and kiss with, and he discovers that he really, really likes kissing behind the closed flap of a tent.
Or what he thought was a closed flap, until he hears the giggling, and spies several sets of eyes peeking through the cloth like sunlight through branches.
It doesn't bother him, but the other boy blushes and giggles and runs back to the main events with a quick pardon.
He frowns, left alone again and not quite sure where he went wrong, but doesn't think anything more of it.
By the end of the Arlathvhen, he has been traded to the other boys clan, anyways.
“Alaris, First of Clan Lavellan,” he reintroduces himself, as though his tongue had not been down his throat a few days prior.
Era'harel nods, and introduces himself again as Alaris takes him on a tour of the clan site. Lavellan is more centralized than Ralaferin had been. More of its members are reliant on crops and trade than hunts and livestock.
It's nice, but it's also much, much more boring.
The hunting team is smaller, so his workload increases substantially despite it being a less necessary trade here. Hunting becomes a daily ritual, rather than a weekly one. He hates it, really. No time to do anything else, just a repetitive, monotonous list of daily tasks. Wake up too early, fletch some arrows for the following day, inspect the ones from the day before, hunt, clean the kill, eat, sleep, repeat.
Ugh.
At least his dreams are vivid. Parties and people and never having to touch another bow in his life. Visions of massive trees in courtyards, music, laughter. Freedom.
He's grateful that he's been taken in by the Dalish, really. They could have left him to die, and there's always one or two members that won't let him forget it. But he watches the ink on the faces of the other hunters, the bow permanently scrawled over the features, and feels sick at the permanence of it. At being permanently tied some predetermined role that he hates. Life is meant to be enjoyed.
No one else seems to get that.
And then the wyverns come. A small grouping wanders too close to the camp, picking off their usual prey and the hunters all have to scare them off, or hunt them down.
Arrows whiz past his ears, long dark hair blowing past his peripheral vision in the aftermath. The wyverns remain, screeching, and dart towards the group. The hunters leap, climb into the trees effortlessly, as they have done countless times before.
Era'harel stumbles, and falls back onto solid ground. Three scaled down dragons barrel towards him and he panics. He stands, and looses a fireball, managing to strike one right in the eye as it lets out an ear-splitting shriek.
The other two don't even pause, and one slams straight into his ribs before he can run, knocking him flat on his back. The other hunters call for him, and the wyvern rears its head up, teeth gleaming in the sunlight as he prepares for his death.
Several arrows thunk into it before it can tear out his throat, and the beast collapses, dead, on top of him.
Which would be less of an issue, he thinks, if they were not so heavy.
Another hunter slashes the throat of the already blinded wyvern, and the last is taken care of in short order before they are able to pull the carcass off of him. His ribs are crushed, he feels as though his entire body has been flattened out like jerky, and every step he tries to take sends another shot of pain straight through his body. The hunters that are not busy bundling up the wyverns help carry Era'harel back into the clan, and into the healers aravel. They dump him (rather roughly, if you ask him) into the empty patients hammock before leaving to finish the hunt.
Alone again, he sighs. Immediately, he wishes he hadn't as his ribs press painfully back into him with the deep breath.
“You look like hell,” comes a soft voice from behind a shelving unit full of salves and potions. “What did you do?”
“I killed a dragon.” Era'harel lies with a smug grin.
The girl doesn't seem to believe him, on any account. White hair braided down her back, a small curl wisping over her forehead as she strides towards him in traditional healers garb.
She pokes and prods and hems and haws at him, and he relaxes at the attention, until he realizes something odd.
“You look like you're my age.”
“Well, how old are you?”
“Fifteen.”
“Then I'd say that makes sense, since we are the same age.” she quips.
“Why haven't I seen you before?”
“I'm not always around. The last few years my time has been split between the trade routes and, well,” she gestures to the space around them “being locked away in here.”
Era'harel blinks “They let you go on the trade expeditions?”
“Mm-hm,” the girl grins “I'm good with numbers, and Keeper agrees that I need to get out of my fathers shadow from time to time.”
“Do you get to go into the cities?”
“Sure do.”
Era'harel thinks of giant trees and laughter and ratted roofs, and how much he misses these things he scarcely remembers.
“Could you take me with you?”
She blinks.
“I...don't know. We need the hunters here, for food. There's only about six of you.”
“Well there's only two healers, and they let you go.” he points out.
“That's...” she frowns. “I mean, you're right, but I don't know...”
“What don't you know?”
“You, for starters.”
Era'harel thinks that's probably fair, and gives her the best semblance of a wave and a charming smile as he can manage in his current situation, and introduces himself.
“That's a weird name.” she comments. “They named you 'demon mage'?”
“It's not like I picked it,” he gripes. “So what's your name then, Ms.-hyper-critical-of-naming-customs?”
“...Sulvuna.”
“Oh, 'alive'. That's much better.” He snickers.
Sulvuna turns red beneath the strands of her hair that have come loose in the humidity of the aravel before she pokes him harder than is necessary for her inspection in the ribs. He yelps in pain, and notes the flat 'oops' she gives him in lieu of an actual apology.
She does end up asking if he can go along on the trade routes though. She even goes so far as to lie for him, claiming that his injuries will require more recovery time before he can shoot an arrow or cast a spell correctly. Her father scoffs and derides her for it, and Era'harel pretends not to hear him calling her a disgrace, or notice that it's the first thing he's said to her in the week he's spent resting in their hammock.
Still.
She was willing to stick her neck out for him. He should do something in return, probably.
They're on the road with another elf, a slightly older one who is far taller than any elf really has the right to be with bright orange hair, (“His name's Haleir,” Sulvuna informs him from beneath rosy cheeks and eyes that are trying to act like they aren't focused on him for half their trip) who is in charge of the actual trades. Lots of exchanges made over the years, and Era'harel notices the gifts Haleir buys for Sulvuna on their trips. Nothing extravagant, some clothes and foods and most notably a smooth stone in the shape of a crescent moon that she keeps tucked away on her person, even when they are back at camp.
He also notices Haleir giving gifts to several other members of the clan, when Sulvuna isn't looking.
When they are eighteen and he and Sulvuna consider each other best friends even in the daylight, they go into town with Haleir for the umpteenth time. But their first night, Haleir sends him away. Some errand he says needs to be double checked, and Era'harel goes without question.
When he returns, he finds Haleir asleep beneath the covers of the bed, and Selene with tear streaks down her face, her dress torn and shredded and hanging off her shoulders.
He's frozen in the doorway, her gaze going right through him. Empty, hollow.
Hurt.
And then he is angry. He doesn't ask what happened, doesn't need to, doesn't want to make her say it when he's seen the looks and he's seen the signs and he still trusted them here alone together and he was wrong, he was so wrong, he should have been looking out for her, he's supposed to be her friend damn it.
Era'harel drags Haleir out of bed, slamming him to the floor and shocking him awake.
“What the fuck-” Haleir screams.
“How dare you!” Era'harel interrupts “How dare you, she trusted you, the clan trusted you and then you turn around and pull this sort of shit, you fucking monster-!”
“Era-” Sulvuna whispers, moving to stand from the bed. Haleir speaks again and she winces, immediately sitting down as he starts yelling excuses to Era'harel about how it wasn't his fault, and of course she wanted it too, she just doesn't know how to have a good time, and it's right around this time that he stops listening and smashes his fist into the side of Haleirs jaw, instead.
Sulvuna freezes, stunned, still caught trying to figure out what the best course of action might be. Haleir, clearly unused to being held accountable for his own actions, is momentarily stunned as well before he pulls back and strikes at Era'harel, who narrowly ducks out of the way and uses the momentum to slam Haleir face down onto the bed, twisting his arms painfully behind his back until he's screaming in pain instead of anger, and pleading to be let go.
“Apologize.” Era'harel grits out.
Haleir is silent, until his arm is twisted tighter behind him, and he yells once more before finally saying “Fine, fine!” he turns his head slightly, to look at Sulvuna “Sorry for giving exactly what you wanted you fuckin-”
“That is not an apology!” Era'harel roars, before kneeing him as hard as he can in the groin and slamming the taller elf back into the wall. Haleir crumples to the floor, unconscious, while Sulvuna stares uncertainly back at Era'harel.
“I...thank...thank you?” She manages, voice scratchy and raw enough to break on the higher tones.
He sighs, and pulls her tightly into his arms. Tries to emulate what he knows is supposed to be reassuring. “I'm sorry,” he mumbles into her hair. “I shouldn't have left.”
“It wasn't your fault...” She whispers back, arms awkwardly coming up to wrap back around him. “You didn't know. I didn't know. These things happen.”
“That's not- That's not true, Sulvuna. The world doesn't have to be like this. Not everyone is like him, I've slept with plenty of people, and none of them were-none of them did anything like this! You're not supposed to!”
“It doesn't matter.” she whispers back with a shake of her head “It doesn't-I don't..It doesn't matter. It happened, and nothing I do will change that. I just...can we...can we go for a walk or something? I'd really like to...to not be here, right now.”
“Yeah,” Era'harel swallows, handing her his traveling cloak. “Yeah, wherever you want to go.”
She nods, and thanks him as she dons his cloak, and they step back out into the hallway.
They end up walking all the way back to the clan, without Haleir, and without going back.
Era'harel confronts her father first. He's a healer, and he's her father, and that means he should be the one to help her here, right? You're supposed to see a doctor after stuff like this, he's pretty sure.
But it becomes clear early into the conversation, Sulvuna thankfully still outside, that Elrogathe has no desire to try to fix the situation.
“I don't see the problem.” He shrugs without even looking up from his work.
“You're shitting me, right? Haleir raped your daughter, and you 'don't see the problem'?”
“Haleir is going to be bonded to Sulvuna soon, and then she will be expected to have relations with him regularly so that they can have children and strengthen the clan.”
“And if he knocked her up already?” Era'harel manages through grit teeth.
“Then for once in her life, my daughter will be ahead of the curve.”
The nonchalance grates at him. He should care, he should love her, parents are supposed to love their children. Era'harel can not even remember his parents faces, but even he knows that. Purple flames lick at his arm, and Elrogathe finally glances up from his work table when he smells the smoke.
“Please do not set the aravel on fire. It would set me back by months on work.”
“What is wrong with you? Doesn't Sulvuna matter to you at all?! Isn't her well-being important to you?”
“Sulvuna is important to the clan. Her mother and I are both from long lines of Dalish blood, as are Haleir and his parents. I wouldn't expect a shemlen like you to understand.”
“Excuse you?”
“Do you prefer demon spawn, then? I assumed Shemlen was the polite thing to call you.”
“I am not-my parents were-”
“Your mother was a whore from the city, who ran away when your father was slaughtered by templars. Keeper Ralaferin found her standing over you, already a demon, an abomination given in to her sin entirely. Ralaferin has always been a soft clan. They slew her to save her, and took you in in the hopes that a proper upbringing could make you better. An offering of repentance to the gods, to show that even the doomed could be saved.” Elrogathe leans back in his chair, raising one eyebrow.  “They were wrong, of course. We took you in, because we needed more hunters. But a demon dressed as an elf is still a demon in the end. You are still not one of us, nor will you ever be. And the next time you fall ill, do not expect me to save you. It is not worth wasting the resources anymore.”
“That's enough.” Sulvuna insists from the doorway, fists tight at her sides. “You are being needlessly cruel. Era'harel is a good person-”
“We call him demon for a reason, Sulvuna-”
“And yet his heart is kinder than yours.”
Elrogathe tsks, and returns to his work as Sulvuna snags Era'harel hand in hers and drags him out of the aravel.
“I'm sorry, for what he said.” she apologizes. “He was out of line.”
“Is it true?”
Sulvuna blinks.
“Is it true?” Era'harel repeats, more insistently.
“I...I don't know,” she admits. “I've never known him to lie, though.”
It stings. It stings, the only thing anyone has told him about his parents in years, and it's this. Slaughtered, given in to temptation. Temptation he's been eyeing himself, in dreams. Memories tainted, smiles and warmth and love all ended with blades.
His end too, probably.
Sulvuna hugs him.
She doesn't say anything, usually not one to initiate physical contact, especially given recent events, but she steps in and wraps her arms around him and pulls him into her until his head is on her shoulder and he returns the embrace.
And then he cries. He cries, and he howls for the first time in his memory as she holds him and hums old songs into his ear, and takes him to one of their more secluded spaces in the woods, one of their bottles of alcohol still hidden in the trunk of the tree.
They stay there like that until the sun begins to set. Sulvuna still stroking his back gently, soothingly.
Lovingly.
“We should leave.” She muses.
He scoffs.
“I'm serious.” she says.
He lifts his head, pulling back from her and wiping at his face  as he makes eye contact.
She certainly seems serious.
“Where would we go?” He asks, warming up the the idea the more he considers it.
“Anywhere,” Sulvuna shrugs “Anywhere we wanted, that's the point. We could go somewhere no one knows us. Reinvent ourselves, start from scratch. I've got some things we could sell, and we both know how much things are worth, and we could go. We could go anywhere.”
“Let's do it.”
She nods. “Pack a bag. We'll head out in...an hour?”
Era'harel grins. “I love you.”
She snorts. “Oh, shut up.”
They leave that night, and travel to the nearest city to find a bus. They take the bus for a few days, until nothing is familiar anymore, until no one's heard of their clans, or anyone linked to their clans. Until Era'harel is sure he's too far for it to be where he was born.
“We should rename ourselves.” he decides over a burger and fries at a small diner. And gods, he is not going to miss having to kill something to eat meat.
“You think so?”
He nods. “We hate these names anyways. Why drag them into our new life? If we're gonna start over, let's go full balls to the wall.”
Sulvuna laughs. Light and easy, and more freely than he thinks he's ever seen her laugh back with the clan. “Ok, sure. What do you want me to call you?”
He ponders it for a moment, before the perfect name hits him, and his face splits into a grin. “Desire.”
Sulvuna almost chokes on her milkshake. “Oh, surely something more modest and subtle for someone like you would be better.” she teases.
“Nah, I like Desire. Des, in fact. Des has a nice ring to it.”
Like reclaiming the very thing they tried to condemn him for, he thinks. Fuck them. They want to keep it hidden behind closed doors, like some shameful secret? He'll wear it as a badge of pride, instead.
And besides, he knows he looks good. No one would argue it.
“What about you?” he asks.
Sulvuna ponders the question for a moment, nodding decisively and declaring “Selene. I like Selene.”
“That's like a moon thing, right?”
“Something like that, yeah.”
“Suits you. Hair like moonlight. People will write poetry about you.” He teases with a waggle of his eyebrows.
She laughs again. “I doubt that.”
“You never know,” Des smirks “Our future looks bright, after all.”
