On my walk to work this morning, I see what appears to be a homeless person lying on the street. Unfortunately, not an uncommon sight. What was uncommon was how everyone was slowing down to take a closer look before continuing on their way. This person was not moving, no blankets, no cardboard, no winter coat, no one stopping. I thought about not stopping too. 10, 15, 20 years ago I probably wouldn’t have stopped. This morning I stopped. I called 911. They wanted to give me instructions on CPR. I hesitated. I was terrified. What if this person had a knife, what if they wake up in a rage. No one else was stopping. Who would help me. I wanted to do the right thing, but I was too scared to do it. People saw me on the phone, asked if I was calling 911. As soon as I nodded they gave me a thumbs up and moved on. No one stayed. I got closer, I could barely see his face under his hoody, but now I knew it was a man, an older man or a man my age. Hard to tell. I nudged his foot, no response. Nudged it harder, he twitched. Once more, he pulled his head off the ground eyes still closed as he sank back down. Thank god he was alive. Thank god he was breathing and moving. I was still scared, afraid to touch him. But I could hear sirens now, reported to the 911 operator that the man had moved, that he looked older, incredibly frail. The sirens were getting louder, but this is a bad intersection in the Financial District, notorious for traffic snarls. I still couldn’t see the lights or the trucks. But the 911 Operator was satisfied that help would arrive soon and signed off. Soon I saw a firefighter crossing the street toward me. Still couldn’t see his truck, but saw the lights reflecting off cars and the buildings. EMS were right behind him. I still couldn’t bring myself to leave. Still wasn’t sure what to do. They were able to rouse the man, get him to stand up. He was so small. Frail and older looking than I first thought. No gloves, no hat, no winter coat. They tried to get him to go to the hospital or a shelter. He refused and wandered off. We all wandered off. No one stayed.
