Wrapped Scenelets No. 63: chill

I'm writing scenelets for (most of) my Spotify Wrapped top 100 songs. Here's number 63, Ventura Highway by America & George Martin.

“Man, I think you need to get out of the city,” Niran said, offering him a hand.

“I think you need to get out of the city,” Sheri said, taking their hand to jump down from the too-tall retaining wall he was sitting on. Hitting the sidewalk jolted his ankles, but he kept walking alongside them, hands in pockets.

Niran shrugged. “Same difference. I’m not gonna leave you here.”

“Where are you going?”

“The coast. It’s too cold to swim, but I found a little cabin near the water.”

“Have you been to the seaside before?”

“Oh, yeah. Not as much as I’d like, but I used to go down to the beaches in Posimar with my parents every once in a while. Have you?”

“Only once, in Arameunen.” It had really been Keearo’s trip, but he’d touched the ocean.

“Well, in a week, you can say you’ve been twice,” Niran said. Oh, right, the long weekend on the other side of the assignment he was avoiding.

“So what are you going to do there if it’s too cold to swim?”

“Whatever we feel like. There’s a town not too far away that we could go see, woods to walk in, and I mean, I like just sitting and listening to the waves. Plus, it’s only four days. That’s not enough time to get really bored.”

Sheri stared at them until they stared back. “Niran, have you met yourself? You get bored waiting for your kettle to boil.”

They grinned. “I’ll have board games. And books. And who knows, maybe the place will be haunted.”

“If it’s haunted, I’m not going.”

“If it is, think of the stories you can tell your betrothéd.”

Sheri steered into them just hard enough to make them veer sideways a little. They laughed, and he smiled while pointedly not looking at them. The betrothéd joke had never been funny, but it felt familiar and affectionate now. He wasn’t going to laugh and let them win about it, though.
