The fact that “dolls having a tea party” has stuck around in the public consciousness is fascinating to me.

Back in the Old Days, women did socialize at tea parties. So if a girl had a doll tea party, she was imitating her mom / other contemporary women.

But in Modern Times, women don’t have tea parties. So now, “dolls having a tea party” is an echo of an extinct behavior, repeated through the years until it’s no longer associated with anything ‘real’--only with play.

A Barbie themed for a tea party is a bit like if they made Transformers that turned into stagecoaches and horse-drawn buggies.

#I mean I'd totally buy a TF that turned into those #but it would be pretty weird if they were COMMON in the toyline #dolls #tea parties #modern women socialize in a variety of ways like book clubs; hiking; bowling clubs; etc #but I would say the most common or at least stereotypical modern equivalent of a tea party #would be 'going out for mimosas / to brunch with the girls'#also I realize tea parties were only common in the Old Days with women of a certain social status #but also I doubt impoverished girls were given fancy porcelain dolls to play with #they were probably working in factories
