Since I’m rereading all the pjo and related books I thought I’d share some thoughts as I go! Definitely looking at them through a different perspective now (I’m older, I now know that rick sort of sucks) but also finding lots of awesome stuff I’d forgotten or missed! I’ve already read pjo and tkc so I’ll start with hoo.
Reflections on the lost hero! (In no particular order)
They were really doing my boy Leo dirty from day 1/page 9 “ Jason figured that if this was his best friend his life must be pretty messed up”😢
So I know that everyone says “only one of the characters in lost hero is actually made to be likeable!” And I actually do not remember who that character is? Leo right? I just know I love Leo, now at least. I was not a fan of piper back when I read these for the first time, but that really didn’t have anything to do with her actual character and was more based on the fact that she had the same name as my best friend at the time that I was separating myself from. I love all the characters now probably more from fan art and hcs and the fandom than the actual books!
So I know there’s a lot of criticism of piper being “half cherokee” when gods don’t have dna (riddled with plot holes on its own) and definitely rick made some mistakes with the whole half part, but my interpretation is that Piper has lived her whole life thinking she’s just half cherokee because we know that Aphrodite didn’t reveal herself to Tristan, so her dad and her always just thought her mom was some random probably white lady. So while piper might be actually full cherokee, that’s not what her perception of herself is. I think it would’ve been nice to have a moment where she realizes that, that she’s not half anything and she can embrace that part of herself fully.
The Aphrodite cabin really is represented so negatively, it’s all mean girls and makeup obsession and criticizing girliness. Read a post on misogyny and the demonizing of girly things in Percy Jackson and I don’t know where to find it but it was very eye opening
I love the part where they go to Quebec! I have no idea why that stuck in my head so much but as soon as I started reading I was just thinking “when do they go to Quebec?” I just remember that part really clearly
Perhaps rick could’ve just not sexualized a native girl with so many aspects of the Aphrodite heritage when rape of indigenous women is epidemic? He just never made that connection? Cough cough sensitivity reader
Why have I never seen any fan art of coach hedge in his yellow pastel suit? That would be iconic
Why don’t demigods ever realize who the villain is until like the last moment? They study Greek mythology at camp all summer long, you’d think someone would have figured a creepy sleeping dirt lady is gaea
Anyone else just feel really steamed sometimes? “Even though piper had wanted to take the poster down herself, now she was totally steamed” (183) I’m sorry unless piper is secretly broccoli what was rick thinking?
I think it’s so funny that piper and Leo just like immediately became counselors once they got back to camp. Like the whole piper drew rivalry made sense but in Hephaestus’ cabin it was just “none of us want responsibility, let’s give to this random new kid, we already gave him the bed of our dead counselor, why not” I imagine Counselor piper or Leo leading their cabin to an activity and not knowing where it is, asking an 11 year old where the showers are or something. Piper has never even been to the dining pavilion, all her siblings are just looking at her expectantly at dinner to lead the table to the brazier for the offering and she’s so confused. Lacey ends up getting up first and basically has to explain things to piper all the time the first few weeks. Also counselor meetings are like “archer dude” “garden girl” “buff intimidating girl” for a long time because everyone forgets that piper and Leo have only been here for a week and never got introduced to everyone
Left this post in drafts for too long and forgot a lot of what I was going to write about, but here’s what I could come up with. Feel free to add on favorite moments or reflections on the Lost Hero!

Hey, I would love to know what your favourite books are!!
This is going to be a loooong list oabsksbdkdn
-Harry Potter series ofc-PJO/HOO series-Magnus Chase series-The Kane Chronicle series YES I READ EVERYTHING THE GUY WRITES tho I still have yet to finished TKC :c-Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard (still haven’t gotten to King’s Cage tho)-The Swap by Megan Shull-Everything Everything by Nicola Yoon-Looking For Alaska by John Green-The Perks Of Being A Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky-Perdida series by Carina Rissi (these are brazilian books and I’m pretty sure it hasn’t been translated to english. Yet.)-the Gone series by Michael Grant (still on book 4 tho)-Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher (i read this book when I was 12, I think, and it impacted me on a personal level bc I had some issues at the time. And now I reread it a couple of weeks ago, and it’s like a whole new person reading the same book but being impacted in the same way.)-The Ugly series (I read the first book in, I kid you not, 5 hours. I was so into it. I read Uglies and Pretties straight out but then I had to wait to get Specials and NOW, after idk maybe two years, I finally got it AND I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE HOW TALLY’S STORY CONTINUES)-Pride And Prejudice by Jane Austen -The Lizzie Bennet Diaries by Bernie Sue-The Diary Of A Young Girl by Anne Frank (this book haunts me, makes my bones shiver. Ofc everyone knows how bad the nazi period was but god, I read the book shortly after visiting the museum in Amsterdam and it… it’s powerful. And it’s a 12 or so year old girl, turning 15 by the end of the journal. But she wrote so beautiful and she died believing that there was still good in humanity.) -Throne Of Glass series by Sarah J Maas -The Last Letter From Your Lover by Jojo Mayes (THIS BOOK DESTROYED ME IT’S AN EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER)-Juliet Immortal series by Stacey Jay (I hate Romeo and Juliet. I think it has good critics about that time period and the hatred between the two family but I hate the story. And then comes this book which is a complete retelling of everything and more. I just loved it)-D4RK INSIDE by Jeyn Roberts (THIS BOOK IS SO CREEPY AND TWISTED AND JUST UGH it’s different than every other YA i have ever read but it’s what makes it so so so good. It’s a must read)-The Program by Suzanne Young (IT KILLS ME THAT I HAVEN’T READ THE SEQUEL YET. The story is extremely compelling and creepy and twisted too)-Starters series by Lissa Price -Remake by ilima Todd (You will notice that I have a thing for high tech dystopian future that has anything to do with appearance. It’s cool to see how the characters can deal with that change and it’s absurdly insane how it’s so easy to change your whole face in those stories. This one is one of my favorite books EVER and I think every young girl should read it to see that bravery is not a male quality only because that is a point the book makes strongly and i loved it.) -The Unquiet by Jeanenne Garsee (this is literally THE book that make me want to write. I read it when I was 12 and it excited me. It’s also creepy and twisted, which you might have noticed is something I adore in books.)-Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell-Alice In Wonderland by Lewis Carol (MY PASSION MY LOVE MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE I WILL DIE LOVING THIS BYE)-Linked by Imogen Howson-Splintered series by AG Howard (IT’S BASED ON ALICE IN WONDERLAND, ONE OF MY FAVORITE BOOKS EVER, AND ALSO VERY DARK AND TWISTED AND CREEPY, just in a different way than the others. ALSO MORPHEUS IS MY FAVORITE CHARACTER EVER BYE)-Slated series by Teri Terry (I literally threw the last book of this series at the wall. It’s the only book I have ever throw at the wall.)-Magisterium series by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare (I HAVE YET TO READ THE BROZE KEY UUUGH)-Hopeless by Colleen Hoover-The Selection series by Kiera Cass (i'mma sucker for romance y'all must have noticed this by now)-Procura-se Um Marido by Carina Rissi (again, brazilian book. Hasn’t been translated into english as far as I know)-Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige (It’s a series but I have only read book one AND IT IS SO GOOD)-Love Letters To The Dead by Ava Dellaira (this one got me good)-An Amber In The Ashes by Sabaa Tahir (same thing as Dorothy Must Die)-Hit by Lorie Ann Grover-I Let You Go by Claire Mackintosh (don’t be fooled by the title, this is not a love story)-The Diabolic by SJ Kincaid-Five Little Pigs by Agatha Christie-The Testing series by Joelle Charbonneau
Some of these books, I have read ages ago. But the stories where… imprinted into my soul, yes I am being that dramatic. Most of these books impacted me in a way that makes my heart ache because I can’t … read it for the first time again. Most of these books are extremely important to me cause there were what I clung to when things where though and when I thought I was alone. Making this list made me feel extremely nostalgic because I missed all those stories, I missed all those characters and I wish I could read them all right now, this second and just relive everything at once.
