Am extremely late to doing this, by like, a week. That being said, welcome to the very unceremonious start of this tumblr, where I talk about Georgia Tech’s Chinese LBAT program that takes us to Shanghai for 6 weeks and Qingdao for 3 weeks!

Most of these photos were taken on the arrival to Shanghai Pudong Airport. For some of the photos, I captioned them with extra information. Unfortunately, the caption length is limited, so sometimes I will probably have to expand upon the photos down here, which is pretty inconvenient. Additionally, you may have to zoom out on your browser to view the full caption, which is also pretty inconvenient.

After arriving at the airport, you’ll have to pass through some more security, which involved the standard “checking your passport and visa” deal. Something I didn’t realize existed, however, was the fingerprint scanner. Now that’s high tech.

I guess here I can try to explain the whole SIM card business. Basically, your phone is either locked or unlocked. If it’s unlocked, then you can freely change its SIM card. If it’s locked, then it is locked to a single carrier, and you can’t switch its carrier when you’re in China. This means you’ll have to buy a new phone that works with Chinese SIM cards. At the airport, there are kiosks to purchase SIM cards, and Wi-Fi in a box (which is seriously just a portable electronic device of Wi-Fi. The one my friend bought was about $170 USD. Whether or not this is a good investment is up to you to decide, however it’s undeniable that portable Wi-Fi is pretty cool).  It’s fine if you can’t buy a SIM card at the airport, there are plenty of cell phone stores near campus, where you can purchase a new phone if needed, and your precious SIM cards.

Afterwards, we headed to Terminal 1, where the rest of the class was already waiting (our flight was delayed by like 2 hours so we were the last to arrive, but the airport gave us free snacks for our time it so it’s fine). Getting to Terminal 1 was a tremendous struggle, and I don’t even remember why. We were constantly in the “general area of Terminal 1,” but we were never able to find any of the professors looking for us, so we just kept confusedly wandering around. The experience would have actually been pretty funny, if it weren’t so unfunny.

After we did get where we needed to be, then we boarded a bus to Shanghai JiaoTong University, which was an hour long ride. We stay at the “Faculty Club,” and we get hotel-style rooms, with two to a room. I managed to get an entire room to myself, but don’t count on this happening often; I was a special case, as usual.

The way I’ll tag these photos is with the American date format, so if you want to search a particular day, just use that format.
