I was inspired by @thedivinelights' art to draw my own version of 2022 Scrooge and Marley where they're the same age.
AKA the au where they've been married for decades and Marley is forever fussing over Scrooge's appearance.

Levi and Zeke:  Their similarities and the Fundamental differences between Them:
I’ve recently been having a discussion with @ourmondobongo, and it’s spurred me to want to kind of analyze further the fundamental and philosophical differences between Levi and Zeke.  I know I’ve gone into this thoroughly already, but my discussion with ourmondobongo has really made me want to delve in even deeper.  First though, let me thank them for, as always, inspiring such insightful discussion among the fan base!
Some really interesting ideas were posted here, about Zeke’s experiences growing up in Liberio informing his world view and his views on the worth, or rather, lack thereof, in human life.   ourmondobongo suggested that, because of Zeke’s experiences with his parents, utilizing him as a tool for the Resistance, and his subsequent utilization by the Marlyean army as a tool of war, it ended up warping his perception, and influencing him to believe that all human life is inherently worthless unless it can be molded into a tool or a weapon to further some goal.  I agree with this interpretation of Zeke’s mindset and what shaped it.  This is undoubtedly how Zeke views the world, and humanity as a whole, and he’s deemed, because of his own suffering, brought about by his experiences affirming this world view, that life is not worth living.  Because he sees life as without value unless one can make themselves useful in some way, in his view, the suffering inherent in that makes life fundamentally pointless and meaningless and not worth the effort.
Now, where I diverge slightly from ourmondobongo’s view on this is in relation to Zeke’s influence upon Levi in the final arc, or rather, what they say about Zeke’s philosophy overriding or undercutting Levi’s own.  They said that Levi’s belief in an intrinsic value in human life is bombarded and undermined during the final arc of SnK, Zeke’s own belief in the worthlessness of human life being affirmed to him again and again by the chaos and destruction around them, the rightness of his philosophy and belief that this sort of destruction can only stop with the eradication of the Eldian people being confirmed.  But see, the thing is, I don’t think Zeke is at all showing Levi something new, or something which he hasn’t already known all his life.
Zeke claims that his experiences in life make him uniquely suited to understanding the conflict between Eldian’s and Marleyeans, and that his experiences make him uniquely capable of knowing how to solve that conflict.  But Zeke is nothing if not a unfailingly self-centered egotist, someone driven purely by selfish, egotistical viewpoints, unable and unwilling to perceive anything outside of his limited world view.  His life ISN’T unique, his experiences AREN’T unique.  They’re, first of all, shared by every single Eldian on both Marley and in other countries around the world.  Further, and more importantly to the point I’m about to make, they’re shared by Levi.
Zeke grew up being treated and regarded as a second-class citizen, relegated to a limited area, an internment zone, which he wasn’t allowed to leave unless given direct permission by the powers that be, and regarded as something less than human by the people of Marley.  Well, these are all things Levi himself experienced growing up too, and, I would argue, to an even more extreme degree than Zeke.
Levi grew up in the Underground, a sprawling, subterranean city filled with the so called “dregs of society”.  A place where the poor, the persecuted, the sick, the dying, the deviant and the criminal were either forced to flee to, or more unfortunate still, were born into.  All this underneath the Capital of Paradis, Sina, the richest, most exclusive district inside the Walls.  A place where the elite of society lived and worked and raised their families in wealth and luxury.  The irony of the poorest, most poverty stricken area inside the Walls being directly beneath the richest, most affluent area inside the Walls can’t be overstated.
Perhaps most relevant to note in this comparison between Zeke’s experience growing up in an internment zone and Levi’s growing up in the Underground, is that the people of the Underground were not only considered second-class citizens, but relegated to something even below that, considered not citizens at all.  They were literally denied citizenship within all areas above ground, within the Walls, and if they somehow managed to make it to the surface, and were found out, they would be promptly deported back to the Underground, where they would continue to be denied any and all rights given to the people up above.  And, it can be easily argued, that the people of the Underground were treated in many ways significantly worse than the Eldian’s inside the interment zone in Liberio.  The people of Liberio seemed relatively well provided for, able to find work, able to earn a living, able to have homes for their families and put food on the table, essentially allowed a sustainable and comfortable life, if one burdened by outside prejudice.  They weren’t made to live in squalor.  Largely, no doubt, because they were seen as an unwanted, but useful resource for the Marleyean government.  The people of the Underground were provided no such provisions.  They were viewed as simple refuse, society’s unwanted and unneeded surplus.  Poverty and depravation ran rampant in the Underground, a lack of resources and support from above resulting in high crime rates and desperation, to things like murder, prostitution, violence and other sorts of criminality.  Further, leading to things like rampant orphaning of children, likely due to starvation and disease claiming the lives of parents, etc...  It was a place literally cut off from the sun, a world of perpetual darkness, sickness, poverty and dire straits.  They received no aid or support from above, were not provided any of the benefits or privileges of the people on the surface, were not offered any sort of path to success, or betterment of their lives.  They were just plainly rejected and left to the whims of fate.  This alone makes it a more difficult and desperate place than the interment zones of Liberio, for even there the Eldian’s were given opportunities to improve their lives through the Warrior Unit programs.
You might try to point out that Zeke’s experience differs from Levi’s in how he was taught that he, and on his assumption, every other Eldian, would only ever be seen and treated as a tool to be used for some greater gain, and that Levi, at least, had the love of his mother, and Kenny to show him the ropes of how to survive in a place as ruthless as the Underground, and so Levi couldn’t possibly understand what it means, the way Zeke does, to be seen as a tool, or to be deemed worthless outside of ones utility.  But I would counter this simply, by saying that Levi grew up, spent the first, several years of his life, in a brothel, where the very mother who loved him also worked as a whore.  Through this experience alone, it can be easily assumed that Levi was exposed to repeated instances of his mother being EXACTLY used as a tool, as an object who’s sole purpose was to give men pleasure.  From his birth, then, Levi was exposed and taught the brutal lesson that the sole most important person in his life, his mother, the one person we can assume was the only positive influence and relationship he had, for the first, several years of his life, was seen and treated by everyone else as nothing more than a tool for their basest and most perverse satisfaction.  I can scarcely imagine a more horrific or cruel example of a young child being taught the same lesson Zeke seems to think is unique to him alone, that people’s lives are worthless outside of what use they can provide for someone or something else.  Beyond that, Levi was again forced to face a situation in which he and his two, closest friends in Furlan and Isabel were used as tools by other people, recruited by Lobov to kill Erwin and retrieve from him an incriminating document, promised, if they succeeded, citizenship above and a handsome payday, only to find out later the entire scenario had been set up by Erwin himself to press Levi and his friends into military service, to be used as tools in the fight against the Titans.  Both of these are prime examples of Levi being faced with the lesson that he and those he cared about were seen by people above ground as nothing more than tools, to be used at their disposal.  So this was a concept Levi was already well acquainted with by the time Zeke showed up, a merciless lesson in the harshness, violence, brutality and suffering of life.  Zeke didn’t experience anything Levi didn’t in turn, and in many ways, with greater extremity.
Anyone trying to claim, also, that Zeke had no positive influences in his life like Levi did would be wrong.  Zeke had Mr. Ksavar, for one, and his grandparents, for another.  Mr. Ksavar asked nothing of Zeke, merely showed care and concern for him, and a desire to spend time with him, playing catch.  It was Zeke who offered to inherit the Beast Titan from Mr. Ksavar, not something forced on him.  And while Zeke’s grandparents may have tried to enforce Marleyean history on him in regards to the Eldian’s, they did so out of love for him, in a misguided attempt to PROTECT him, because they cared, not because they were trying to use him in any way.
My point in talking about all of this is to draw a parallel between Zeke’s life, and Levi’s, and then to demonstrate how, despite deeply similar life experiences, the two of them diverge in vital and fundamental ways which, more than anything, can only be attributed to their strengths of character and natural inclinations as people.
Essentially, the gist of my argument is this.  Zeke is a bad person.  Levi is a good person.  And there can be no excuses, or influencing factors found in either of their lives to credit for the way either of them turned out, other than themselves, other than their own natures.
Because Zeke let his life experiences twist him into a heartless, emotionless, unfeeling sociopath who murders other people without remorse, and regards other human lives as meaningless, worthless trash, expendable and disposable as a means to his own ends.  He let his experiences in life serve as an EXCUSE for his natural cruelty.  He chose to view the lives of others only through the prism of his own experiences, and cast a judgment upon the worth of those other lives.  The true reveal of Zeke’s megalomaniacal egotism is in how he finds himself unable to separate the lives of others from his own.  In how he’s unable to view the lives of others as anything other than an extension of his own existence.  Because he deems his own life worthless, then so too must be the lives of everyone else.
Levi, then, is perfectly his opposite.  It isn’t because of Levi’s life experiences that he’s turned out the way he is.  It is IN SPITE of his life experiences that he has.  Everything Levi’s ever experienced in his life, according to Zeke’s philosophy, should have turned him into a monster.  He should have come out of the Underground a sociopathic, unfeeling, brutally uncaring and violent man, ready to take from and use others for nothing more than his own, personal gain, because that was the lesson his life had taught him.  Because that was what he’d been shown over and over again.  That life is cruel, and ruthless, and uncompromising in its unfairness, and that to live is to suffer.  And yet, Levi came out of the Underground with a greater capacity for compassion, feeling, love and kindness than any other character in SnK.  He continually and routinely, throughout the series, demonstrates an incredible empathy, consideration, sympathy, generosity and understanding for other people.  He is immensely accepting and nonjudgmental, and always, always goes out of his way to express gratitude towards others for their own sacrifices and efforts.  He does his absolute best to protect the lives of others, constantly putting his own at risk to help others live, constantly putting his own at risk to save whoever he can.  Constantly and consistently, Levi places the lives of others above his own in terms of worth.
And here’s the thing that makes Levi most remarkable of all.  The thing which demonstrates beyond any shadow of a doubt the immense strength of his character.  Levi very well knows that life is cruel, that life is brutal, that life is unfair, and that often people die for no damned good reason at all, that they suffer for no reason at all.  He very well knows that people are breathtakingly cruel and terrible to one another, that people treat one another in unspeakably horrific and unforgivable ways.  He very well knows that the dream of a lasting and peaceful world, a lasting peace between humans, is nothing more than a pipe dream, an unrealistic, unattainable ideal.  A fancy only a child should genuinely be able to believe in.  And yet, once again, despite KNOWING this, despite every lesson and experience in his life impressing this awful reality upon him again and again and again, Levi still does everything within his limited power to ease the suffering of others, to improve their lives, to protect them and show them kindness, to help in any way he can, whichever way he’s able.  Despite knowing the futility of life, the pointlessness of suffering, the injustice of other people’s cruelty, despite knowing these things INTIMATELY, Levi still has in him an open, generous, kind and caring heart.  Levi still has in him a deep, unending well of compassion and an unwavering desire to protect and better the lives of all the people around him.  It isn’t even Levi’s own dream that he fights for, it is the dreams of OTHERS that he fights for.  He can’t ever fully embrace this notion of a peaceful existence, free of violence and deprivation and cruelty, because he knows too well the way of the world.  He’s been too mired in the indifferent reality of nature and the human condition to ever, really believe it.  But in spite of that, IN SPITE OF IT, he fights to protect that dream and belief that others carry, that others strive towards, that others commit themselves to.  He gives everything he has, every piece of himself, to protect a dream that he himself can’t even fully believe in, and for no reason more than that it is something which gives others hope, something which gives other’s a sense of purpose, something which one day, possibly, however slim the chance, might come to pass.
It is all in spite of Levi’s experiences in life, all in spite of his weary and cynical understanding of the world and the people in it, that Levi commits himself to kindness, compassion and the chance to help others, in whatever ways he can, even as he knows deep down the ultimate futility in it, even as he knows his own, relative powerlessness in the face of nature’s unyielding and uncaring apathy.
And that really is the fundamental difference between Levi and Zeke.  Two men who have experienced such similar lives, and who have learned early on their lives the cruelties of existing in this world, but one who reacts to those cruelties with defiance and courageous opposition, standing in the face of overwhelming odds, while the other yields to it and lets it excuse his cruelty in turn, bowing to its power and letting it consume him.

tw vomit mention, substance abuse, death
15,000 looked like so much more when put to paper. Or plastered across the welcome sign that greeted your entrance into its towns limits. Not so much when you were one of the 15,000-something of them. Or when it felt as if you’d met every single resident, dead or alive, who’d ever lived there since you’d been born. The town and its inhabitants were small, both in their ideals and their desires. Their faces had often blurred together in Marley’s mind, haunting her with the notion that she too was just another face, another name. One of only 15,000.
Marley Callahan was born on May 23rd, 1991, to seventeen year old Helen Callahan. Though teenage pregnancies in a town like Cassel weren’t exactly unheard of, Marley assumed her mother’s parents hadn’t taken the news well, as she held no memories of their appearance in her life. The same could be said about her father, who might as well have been an actual ghost. If he were around somewhere, Helen had never shared. Growing up, it’d only been the two of them (three, if you counted Helen’s growing substance abuse problem and the revolving door of men who supplied it). By her own high school years, there’d been little more to Marley’s life than making sure her mother didn’t choke on her own vomit in the middle of the night. Picking her up and off the floor of the kitchen when she stumbled in at three in the morning, clothes in disarray and pupils blown. Throwing her fully dressed into the shower before school to sober her up so she’d go to work and the lights would stay on.
This would not be the rest of her life. Being her mother’s keeper until the woman got herself together–or more realistically, died. Knowing Helen, the former would never come and the latter would take more years than Marley could afford. She knew she had to get out of Cassel before her mother consumed her entire life, the way she’d felt Marley had consumed hers, and so from a young age, she’d set a plan in place. Finish high school. Save whatever money she could in that time. And the minute that diploma was placed in her awaiting hands, she’d get in her mother’s beat up truck, and drive far, far away, until Cassel was nothing but a distant memory in her cracked rear view mirror.
It was a simple enough plan. Almost foolproof. She kept her head down and to herself, out of trouble. There’d been no point in making friends when she only intended on leaving them behind, and didn’t want to risk the chance of getting attached. Nothing would deter her from her plan (she was stubborn like that). Not even the new boy in town her own junior year, with his crooked smile and soulful eyes that’d seen places outside of Cassel that he longed to get back to. They were similar that way, though his desire was for places he’d already been and hers lied in all that she had yet to see. It was enough, however, to draw them together, though she resisted, at first.
I’m gonna leave this place behind, she’d promised over lunch, soggy cafeteria french fry pointed at him like an accusatory finger across the table. And everyone in it.
He’d barely bat an eye–had the nerve to look amused, even, as he merely smiled that crooked smile back at her, shrugged his shoulders. Then I guess I’ll just have to come with you, as he leaned forward to take the fry from her fingers, right between his teeth.
Almost foolproof.
He made her small town feel galaxy wide. He told stories of the places he’d been, where he longed to go, where they’d see together. While Marley’s attitude towards Cassel did not change, her plan for escape expanded to include him in them. He’d had no desire to settle in Cassel himself, had no qualms about leaving it behind. For the first time in her life, Marley truly felt hopeful about her future, and excited for the one they’d build together.
Though, as graduation neared, things had begun to change. Meetings with guidance counselors, college brochures, plans of his own being made. He assured her that he still wanted to travel, that the plans they’d made together were still their plans–that he wasn’t even sure if he really wanted to go to college, and was only entertaining the idea to please his family and get access to his college fund.
Marley wanted to believe him. She almost had, too, but nearly two years had passed since they’d met and she knew him. Knew him enough to know that he was lying, even if he didn’t know it himself. As she watched him walk across the stage that day, cap and gown and all, she knew she’d had her mind made up. She could’ve left then, in the commotion of the occasion, get lost in the sea of families trying to locate their graduate, but selfishly, she’d wanted one last night with him. One last night of pretending that the next morning would come and they’d hit the road and he’d be there in the passenger seat right beside her.
He wasn’t. She hadn’t even given him the chance to say goodbye when she snuck out from underneath his embrace early that morning, careful not to wake him as she crept towards her mother’s truck, a meager bag full of her belongings stashed beneath her seat, and did exactly what it was that she promised him she’d do two years prior.
Initially, life on the road hadn’t been what she thought. The money she’d saved over the years hadn’t lasted Marley nearly as long as the guilt she hadn’t accounted for in the first place. Less than six months after her departure, Marley found herself considering a return home, tail tucked between her legs. She had a half-formed plan all thought out, of showing up on his door, begging for forgiveness. Telling him that no adventure was worth having if he wasn’t there to experience it with her. That they could go wherever he wanted for college, as long as they were together. Settle down. Get married. Pop out a kid or two. Pray the process didn’t turn her into her own mother.
It was this spiral of thinking that eventually snapped Marley out of it. Hadn’t this been why she’d left him in the first place? The fear of compromising herself, of compromising themselves too much? The fear of waking up years from now with him by her side, but neither of them recognizing themselves, and then what?
She didn’t return home. Marley continued to travel the world by obtaining a job that both funded it and provided the transportation. Stewardessing for charter yachts had only felt like a step up from the waitressing jobs she’d kept to pay for her seedy motel room, and over the next ten or so years, Marley would find herself working up the ranks, making more money in tips alone from the six week charters that would fund her travels for the six months that followed.
The phone call had come almost the moment she’d touched back down in the United States. She used to think that there was nothing that could’ve ever brought her back home. It was as if her mother could sense that she was near, and in one final moment of Helen Callahan glory, she’d kicked the bucket just then, right when Marley didn’t have the excuse of being an ocean’s away not to show up.
She doesn’t intend on haunting Cassel any longer than necessary. It’s merely a stop on the way to wherever she’s going next, wherever it may be. Then she’ll finally have no reason to ever step foot there again.                                                   five songs. sleep on the floor ( the lumineers ) / cowboy like me ( taylor swift ) / don’t know why ( norah jones ) / cigarette daydreams ( cage the elephant ) / pierre ( ryn weaver )

I have a sort of weird McLennon AU idea: Reincarnated!John
I got the idea from reading this interview with Paul McCartney, where he claims if he had been a girl he could have maybe gone out and fought for John to keep their very close relationship and prevent Yoko from essentially “stealing,” John away.
Then I got to thinking, well, what if, instead, John had been the girl? Which then lead to me connecting it too-- well, what if when John had been killed, on Dec. 8th, a little girl had also been born. Basically, John’s soul being reincarnated as a female.
A little girl born a few hours after John Lennon was assassinated, December 8th, 1980, in a hospital in Liverpool England, named Joan Winifred Stanley. Jo, or JoJo for short.
Now while this girl has John’s soul, heart, mind, and similarities feminized-- Joan is still an individual, with her own childhood and memories-- who’s growing up in the 80s, and is a lively, young, and lovely teenage girl in the beginning of the 90s. Her favorite rocker is Joan Jett, likes Blondie, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Bob Marley, Michael Jackson, and has a secret love for Elvis Presley... knows of the Beatles, but only see’s the band and their music as “alright, sort of antwacky.” though her mom fancies them.
Joan has fiery auburn colored hair which reaches some past her shoulders, wavy and thick, can often be a big birds nest of a mess. Milk chocolate brown eyes that appear to have specks of amber when the sunlight hits them; while softened with heavy lashes, are burning and alert, a glare could possibly kill someone. Poor eyesight, hates wearing her glasses because she thinks they make her look like a total lame.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[reference to what sort of glasswear her eyes required and the style of them]
5′5″, thiccc thighs, perky but rather small breasts, wide hips. Noticeable jawline and chin, though softened with baby fat, high cheekbones, sharp aquiline nose, bottom lip plumper than the top. Top two front teeth are crooked, slightly turned inward. It’s hard for me to describe her hairstyle during the very start of the 90s, so it’s something like this since she is an 80s child and for most of her young teens was in the crowd so;
Tumblr media
See now, this is what I have for female John / Joan as far of what her face and hair may look like;
Tumblr media
****[It’s still sort of rough, I know, I need to ink her in and then color her before I wanna show the full reference drawing. I honestly want to try and give her a bit more of a wider jawline, or a bit longer of a face-- but again, Joan is still her own person so she can’t look exactly like John, of course]
Sagittarius[John was a Libra], smoker of Luckies, musically inclined [perhaps sounds like a mix of Deborah Harry and Joan Jett? Though more nasally] loves to sing, learned to play acoustic guitar from her mother, and learned to play the harmonica from her grandda [the one good thing he had given to her as their relationship was generally soured since her mother’s parents saw her as nothing more than a bastard child] Could be considered a bit tomboyish but knows how to use her feminine wiles to manipulate, humiliate, and get what she wants. Tries not to be a horrible rebel as she hates to disappoint and stress out her mother, but can be a wild child and has a bit of an issue with authority and respecting rules and requests she deems unnecessarily stupid. Single child raised under a single mother as her father was never in the picture, and while her mothers’ parents were around they barely helped, so they lived in the manner of “we manage.” Coming from Liverpool, and in the poor-working class of society, her mannerisms of speaking are indeed Scouse.
Hot tempered, jealous/possessive of close friends and crush/lover, quick wit and sharp tongued, masks hurt with indifference and practically ghosting someone til she gets over it or they apologize adequately. Wants to love and own people, but does NOT want to be owned or tied down as it makes her feel caged. Freedom of self is incredibly important to her, and feeling like she’s losing it can cause her to act out and lash out.
Tumblr media
Now, in the early 1990s, I believe Paul is around the age of 49/50. This might be just me projecting, but that makes Paul the legit Daddy in this whole thing, if ya catch my drift. Paul is, in my humble opinion, rather attractive and handsome in his late forties/early fifties. So yeah, silver fox Paul is gonna be a thing.
Tumblr media
I have a thing for older men, alright? Let me project just a little bit here in my own AU.
Tumblr media
I really haven’t thought much on how these two end up meeting, perhaps they meet during Paul’s World Tour during 1990? Again, Joan knows of the Beatles, and knows of Paul McCartney-- begrudgingly she does like a bit of his music-- but hadn’t the money, nor the greatest of utmost desire as many of her other female friends had, to get into to see him when he stopped in Liverpool. She thought it to be neat, but could live without seeing him.
But fate would lead to the two of them meeting, in probably an unexpected sort of way.
Anyways, right away Paul get’s this extremely strange vibe from this girl, this girl who watches him, squinting up at him, with such interest-- and despite being a well known [legendary] and talented musician, and veteran of the music industry, he suddenly feels like he’s been thrown back to the very first day he’d met the scruffy and polar opposite, John Lennon. He finds himself wanting to impress this young bird, because he feels as if despite all his credentials, they mean nothing at this very moment, and he’s stupidly nervous around some girl he had just happened to bump into [because she’s a young bird perhaps?? with burning brown eyes and a quirked, teasing mouth that reminded him of someone???], and it’s like being back to square one of having to prove himself, of his talent and passion, and in the end, the two appear to be sizing each other up, circling like predators do with prey.  It’s a painful comparison when he realizes it, realizes how far this whole interaction threw him back, back into memories and feelings he had long since tried to bury, as not cry and mourn over each day.
It’s her who tries to end the first encounter, because she also gets this awfully weird aura from this old rock n’ roller, but she has no memories to connect it too. It leaves her feeling frustrated, because she really can’t find any rhyme or reason to why she feels this way, why she feels that this isn’t their first time interacting. Despite being an older man, she can’t help but think he looks rather good, and while she can’t put her finger on it again, she thinks that if Elvis had lived to be a bit older, he’d look something like this McCartney fellow. And while she tries to hide it, act indifferent and barely moved that she’s talking to the Paul McCartney, she does feel a bit starstruck, and so she simply wants to end this and keep it as a personal, favorite memory that she may recount to her friends and mother, who’ll probably think she’s just bullshittin’.
But when she attempts to leave, again this McCartney man, who insists that she call him Paul, catches her attention with a light grasp of her arm and stops her instantly. He’s quick to drop the hand the moment she whips her head around, shooting daggers at where he had touched her, then to staring right into his eyes. Paul isn’t sure why he’s doing this, why he feels like he needs to see this girl again, but as an excuse, he claims that it’s been awhile since he’s been back in Liverpool, and so, perhaps-- perhaps she could be the one to show him about. It’s a pitiful attempt of avoiding that he simply wants to meet up with this girl again-- and Joan rolls her eyes and breathes out an amused laugh at such a poor front.
“Aren't I a blind bit too young fe you?” Joan would say, and while the words are obviously a dig, a tease, Paul can’t help but feel as if she had slapped him, his face growing hot and red. Tries to explain, sputtering, almost insulted, that “No-- I mean, yes, I mean, I am not--” and Joan, at first with a relatively flat expression, raises an eyebrow and slowly a smirk begins to form as she watches Paul, the Paul McCartney, fluster and stutter about like the awkward teen boys she knows and have shot down. “Am jus’ skitt'n,” Joan would give in with smile and a laugh, that caused Paul goosebumps and his stomach to lurch, because while softer and higher pitched, reminded him of someone, someone once closer than close.
“A’rite Sir Paul, I'll indulge you.” and so, while she reasons it’s to just be nice this old rocker who probably hasn’t seen a young groupie in some time, she makes it appear she’s writing down her address or phone number on his hand-- and before she makes her get away, Paul would point out she hadn’t officially given her name to him-- “No manners these kids,” Paul might tease, and the auburn haired girl, with a smile that reached her eyes and showcased her nearly straight pearlies, told him her name was Joan, Joan Winifred Stanley, to be precise. Without giving him a chance to respond to it, she bid him farewell with a playful two fingered salute-- and for a breathless moment, Paul swore he had seen John there, just for a split second.
When he finally gets himself grounded and doesn’t feel so hot anymore, he discovers that she hadn’t written her number down, nor even an address-- just simply a street name; Menlove Avenue. If he’s so interested in continuing their little encounter, he could just go up and down the street, was her reasoning. She didn’t believe he’d go through such trouble to find her again-- anyway, he’s touring, and he has a wife and kids. Weird for a man his age to want to what, make friends with a barely 18 year old bird from old dingy Liverpool? A nobody, Joan would think, almost bitterly.
Tumblr media
I’m still putting a lot of thought into this AU, so a lot of things can change and such, especially the idea behind how Joan/John and Paul meet and begin to interact more regularly, how their relationship starts and builds and grows and changes, and of course how it might end [I’m fiddling with the idea that Joan ends up dying too, but that’s a bit too angst-y for me to really focus on so]
Of course because I’m a fucking degenerate, I would like to have a moment where the two do end up having an intense affair-- though it’s just sensitive because, despite being not real at all, I want to give some respect to Linda and his kids around that time too, because I know Paul loves them dearly. So this AU is obviously full of fucking angst-y and complication and slow burn and miscommunication.
I can’t even have my cake and eat it too in my OWN FUCKING AU. Typical.
And yeah, there’s gonna be a noticeable age-gap in this AU, so if that’s not your thing, then that’s fine. There is gonna be a lot of coming of age shit attached to that, a bit of daddy kink, Joan having obvious daddy issues [John most likely had legit mommy issues let’s be real], first times, you name it.
In the AU, Paul is slowly going to come to the outlandish idea/theory that this girl is John, or at least John’s soul reincarnated. He can’t help it-- she reminds him of John too much, it’s eerie how alike the two are that they might as well be the same person. Paul knows he must be crazy for thinking it, and hates it because it makes him feel as if he’s gone completely obsessed over John, the idea of John still being here with him.
I will include an appearance from George and Ringo, with maybe Ringo trying to tell Paul that perhaps this is his way of handling the absence of John, and Paul, trying to justify himself, partially agrees. George ends up meeting this girl, and can’t help but agree that Paul may be right, just maybe, because even George can’t deny this girl reminds him of John too, and gives off this aura that is unmistakably John. Ringo thinks both of them are daft sods, but when Ringo meets Joan, he also finds himself seeing John in her-- though Ringo never voices it. But George is careful to not agree with Paul out loud, worried it might encourage Paul in an unhealthy and potentially dangerous way.
That is, will Paul confront Joan about this and finally tell her that he believes she is John reincarnated? Paul wants too, he wants to tell her, but he’s not stupid, he knows it would probably freak the girl out and cause their budding relationship to instantly crumble and die. But whenever Paul talks about John to her once they’ve gotten close enough that he’s comfortable to divulge such intimate stories and memories about his best mate, Joan’s face would become pensive, almost a far-away look in her eyes, and would begin to comment on how she swears she’s heard these stories before, or that something even similar had happened to her to which had happened to John [even though many of the stories are personal, and kept rather private, so how would she know???]
But Joan would simply shrug off those feelings of Deja Vu, laugh and shake her head, and just move on. She didn’t like getting those feelings, like she should have memory of something but just doesn’t.
Excerpts from a fanfic I’ll never write:
It’s a mess, really. Paul falling for this young lively bird with a mean wit and soft lips and squinting eyes that desperately needed glasses, which still managed to observe and could kill someone in the heat of an argument. A girl with auburn hair that tickled his cheeks whenever they’d hug, a girl with a memorable nose, a girl who smelt of ciggies and Liverpool and vanilla and home.  “You’ve got kaleidoscope eyes,” Paul would try one afternoon, sounding like a young awkward teen again trying to impress a young but experienced girl. Joan would turn those fiery eyes to him, squinting, turning to an unimpressed glower that didn’t match the flustered smile. “Sod off, old man,” Joan would reply, snubbing him as she would do, though the smile still betrayed her.
Paul would fall, fall and fall, like Alice, except there would be no floor to catch him. He would fall for Joan, because he fell for John. It’s a mess, really-- because as things escalated, Paul’s love for Joan and John began to blend and blur, and it was bad because who did Paul really love? Joan, the wild young thing who could tear him down just as easily as build him up in the same sentence and look, or John-- who could do the same but ten times over, and had. Joan though, Joan was putting pieces back together that he had tried to bury long ago, pieces that John had left the day of December 8th.
Tumblr media
“I’m not John,” Joan would say, blunt and straight, cigarette clenched between her teeth. Paul feeling as if the air had been sucked out of his lungs, sweat breaking out on the back of his neck. “I’m Joan,” she’d continue mercilessly, taking a long drag of the fag before ripping it from between her lips, smoke swirling out between the cruel words of reality.  “I’m not some catalyst for your best mate, for whatever you and him had.” Joan’s young face twisted angrily, her eyes filled with dark hurt as she glared at the old rock and roller before her. For a second, Paul saw John again, John with his sneer and his burning glare and his words of knives that dared Paul to say something back, to engage him in war.  It made Paul sick, all of it. He opened his mouth to argue, to protest what she was saying, what she was claiming has been happening all these months. But he can’t, because it’s true, it’s all true, and it burns his insides up.  “You love John, and, and I’m not John,” she’d say, voice cracking as she can’t hide the hurt that comes from finally speaking these truths, bringing them to the light. Her face looks broken, tears threatening to break just as her voice had-- cigarette forgotten between two delicate fingers.
When Paul could find his voice, all that could be said was the girl’s name, soft and almost like a plea; “Joan.”  “Don’t,” she’d bite back like a cornered animal, lip curling in disgust from just hearing her name come from those lips that had practically seared marks along her body. But Paul didn’t, he couldn’t stop, he’d still try-- tried reaching out towards her, a hand going to grasp at her free hand by her side, but all he got was grazing the tips of his fingers to the back of hers before she whipped her hand away, body following the violent motion as she stepped back, away. Those eyes, it’s like she wanted to kill him, especially as that had broken the dam and now her cheeks were wet and she was trying not to hyperventilate and finally she dropped the cigarette as her hands began to quiver.  “I don’t want to hold your hand anymore!  don’t you get it?” she might as well have slapped him, stabbed him, but Paul truly believed those things would have hurt less than what she had just said to him.
Tumblr media
Anyways, thanks for taking the time to read all this bullshit lol I’m really invested in this AU, and so expect more of it. I will be posting the full drawing of Joan once it’s finished, or I can’t bring myself to work on it anymore and thus claim it’s finished to the best of my abilities lol

The Ritual
Tumblr media
Kari laid in the small den she had made for herself that overlooked a clearing in the woods.   How long had she been out in these woods? Time had a wonderful feeling in the tall trees, or maybe everything before that moment had been wrong.   What if this beastly form was how we were all meant to live?  Kari certainly never thought as much.  She was a woman of comforts even if they were simple comforts of the working class.
Dusk was upon her, and though part of her wished not to leave the woods of the Marley Estate, she had responsibilities.  Though it was more than that, it had been a week since she had seen Sal and she had not, since she first met him, gone that long without seeing him.   She missed him, and the pangs in her stomach were not of hunger but of desire to be in his presence again.
She had come to do what she wanted to do.  She had changed herself, armed herself with a curse.  A curse she would keep quiet.  She came to Mac with the need for a weapon.  In need of protection, defense, as well as the ability to fight.   She had exhausted other routes, and in the end, she needed to be able to fight now, and not after three years of training.
She recalled the attack in the park.   The single moment that brought her to this point.   Hands around her throat, the world fading out of vision.   She realized at that moment that Sal would find her dead body.   She had lived, but it was only by accident.   A fact that had haunted Kari since then.   She had not done this to be closer to Sal.  To share the curses burden.  No.  She took the burden to protect him from ever having to find her corpse.   She was an easy target, and though she had ways of defending herself, they had all failed that night in the park.
It was time to go home, though.  Days before Mac had told her to come back to the Manor once Kari had learned her new body. After she had run through the wilds as only an animal can.   After she had killed and feasted on the heart of the forest.   After she howled to the Moons and slept in the grasses.
It was time, so she rose from her bed and walked on all fours.  Her sleek black fur had not dulled the last few days, some habits transcend physical forms.  Kari was meticulous about cleanliness.  Her coat was well looked after.  Her sharp red eyes could see perfectly in the low light as she approached the Manor.  She went to the door, expecting to find Mac, she found a letter instead.
Tumblr media
  Kari,
Light the carved candle near the door. It will activate a spell to guide you to me in the woods and light your path along the way.
When you find me, Whatever you do, do not step into my circle. I will hear you but I will not be able to answer you. Regardless of what you see, I promise I am safe.
Step into the empty ring that lights to your arrival, drink the contents of the flask at its center and lay down. I cannot tell you exactly what you’ll face, Sister. I can tell you that purification is about balance.
For those who have gone through similar rituals, they speak of a dreamstate where you are faced with the hardest thing to accept in your life; Yourself.
Too often what plagues our minds is our own denials and refusals to accept who and what we truly are. You will be faced with hard truths, love, and to pass through to the other side of this ritual, you will have to accept the person you were, the person you are, and the person you will become. Past, Present, and Future.
Keep in mind, this isn’t about slaying your demons, love. It is about accepting them. Through your dream you will this magic show you that woman or wolf, a beast has always lurked beneath the surface. We are all monsters, some of us just hide it better.
Remember, Fury and Tranquility balance one another. To have too much of one or the other and you tip the scales towards madness…
I will see you on the other side, Sister.
` Mac
Tumblr media
The candle rested on the front doorstep.  Kari decided to test her magic, so like she had done so many times before she flicked her wrist.  That little free-floating flame she usually used to light her cigarettes burned over the candle wick. The fire caught, and the candle flared to life.
As Mac said, the path lit with a glow of candles that were not there.   Kari followed the direction of the illuminated path.   She came into the clearing where Mac was sitting inside a circle of candles.   She knew not to distract or step into her ring.  She had her own ring with the flask inside. The etched acid flask that Kari had gifted to Mac was waiting for her.
Kari was never one for ceremony or drawing things out longer than they needed to be.   She knew Mac was aware she was there, so Kari stepped inside her circle and sat down.   She grabbed the flask and drank the contents. The liquid hit her quickly, and she laid back in the ring.   On her back, she looked up at the night sky.   The dreamlike state Mac wrote Kari about, was quick to set in.  The sky turned bright, turning and twisting.  She felt like she was both floating and falling at the same time.   The twisting of the sky forced her eyes closed.  That is when the struggle began.
Tumblr media
Kari thought about what Mac had said.  That we deny who we actually are and she knew she would meet things she didn’t want to face.  She knew what the first would be, or at least she thought she knew.   She envisioned seeing her forced abortion again.  It haunted her to this day, but there was something more profound than that, something that poisoned her life and her relationships.
Her parents.
Kari watched the scene unfold before her like she was a ghost.  Unable to stop or interact with events that were happening.   Kari instantly knew the moment, she was young.   Long before her parent’s open disdain for her.   Now, she was a child.  She sat on the living room rug and played with building blocks.  She could hear the fighting in the kitchen.  As a child, she didn’t understand the words but as this adult ghost, she understood.   The fight was a typical one that Kari knew from her teen years.   She knew the fighting had started long before Kari got pregnant.  As a child, she heard her parents talk about their mistake. Kari was raised knowing she wasn’t wanted.   She was the mistake.  She was the reason they were miserable.
She watched her child self start to cry.   She was quiet, crying in private like Kari did to this day.   Not wanting to be a further burden to the angry adults in the other room.   Ghost form Kari watched and exhaled slowly. She moved and sat down next to her child version.
She said “You aren’t a burden to anyone, Kari.   Your parents aren’t happy, and that isn’t your fault.  You are their excuse.  Their reason for not having the life they want.  You didn’t stop them, they stopped themselves.   There was no reason they had to live this life.  They had other children, they didn’t have to.   That was their choice.  You are smart, caring, and independent.   You will grow up into what they always wished they could be.  They will hate you for having the power to get out of the cycle that they couldn’t.”  She brushed her hand along the back of her child version’s head. Feeling her hair under her fingers.
“Be proud of who you are, you have a new family now.  One’s who chose you and love you.”   She felt like crying by this realization.  She had a family now.  A sister, and Sal.  They were building a life together.  She didn’t need to hold onto the past.   As she realized this, the vision around her faded and she was cast into darkness.
When Kari came to she was in a very familiar office.  An office that she last saw on fire.   The details were sharper than the hazy recollection of her childhood.  This was crisp, real, like she was walking into a picture.   It was dark in the office, a faint light came from the upstairs apartment.  The sound of knocking came on the office door.
“No,”  Kari said. “No… don’t… Damn it leave…”
A few moments later Strather came down the stairs.   Kari cowered back, but he didn’t see her.  Likely he wouldn’t see her.  He crossed to the door and opened it.   The vision version of herself was on the other side of the door.   Her eyes were wide and unsure of her reasons for being there in the middle of the night.  She was stammering.  Stumbling over her words.
Kari could see it now, that smirk on his lips and predator look in his eyes as Kari fled to his desk.   She put distance between them.  That was the night she learned to never run from a predator.  It was only moments, and he was pressed to her back.  Hovering over her and trapping her between him and the desk.
At the moment, this scene felt much different than watching it from the outside.  It was thrilling, exciting, and terrifying as he indulged his vices on her.  Yet, now she can see.  It was a game.  He was testing her.
The scene shifted, and suddenly they were in his kitchen.  He was cooking breakfast for them.   He was warm, inviting, charming.   It was a side of the cold man she hadn’t seen before.   She moved up behind the vision of herself and whispered like she didn’t want the phantom Strather to hear her words.
“It’s an act, Kari.   It’s all bullshit.  You can not fix him.  This is one thing, you can’t do.  He warned you.  He told you to run.  You should have listened.   He saw right inside you from the very beginning.”
The scene shifted again.   They were in her apartment.   There was a dead intruder on her floor.  Kari had a black eye, and she was hugged to Strather’s chest.   He had broken the door down, he had saved her.
The scenes shifted past more rapidly now.  More and more memories of their time together were highlighted.   Kari liked to think he was only a little blurb in her past.  That he didn’t mean anything to her.  Yet, she was still watching the moments pass by, one after another.
“You are beautiful and dangerous. You will be the end of me.”
The words rang in her mind as she was cast into darkness again.   There were no phantoms to pep talk.  No child to reason with and comfort.   She was alone with herself.   She had to come to terms with her time with Strather.   She had to find a balance.  She couldn’t go on without settling her thoughts and feelings for the Monster she once thought she loved.
“You didn’t love him Kari, but you wanted to.   It’s…missing him is okay.   You saw the moments, you lived them and you know it wasn’t all bad.   Actually, most of it was good.  Of course, he was playing you because that’s who he was. You won’t ever know if you meant anything to him or not.   He may have cared for you in whatever way he was capable of, but it may also have been an act.   You saw through him and saw that something had broken him.  No man is born that way.   You saw it and wanted to fix it, but there are some things you can’t fix, Kari.   There are times when you see someone drowning, but you have to let them drown, or they will try to take you down with them.”
“You were trying to learn how not to feel.  How to hide your feelings for Sal.   In the process, you fell for a monster.   It’s okay to admit it.  It’s okay to look back at moments fondly.  It’s okay to be angry, and it’s okay to feel hurt that he lied and used you.   You are not a machine.   You are not broken, and he hurt you.  Being vulnerable is okay.  Whatever you do Kari, never ever ever compare Sal and Strather.   They are not the same person, and he will never make you feel that way.   Just never forget him.   There is value in the time you spent together.”
“He may have loved you, but you will never know.”
Tumblr media
Kari let her own inner thoughts sink in.   The weight of him on her shoulders would be there forever. She knew this and accepted it. She had tried to burn him right out of her life and memory.   She realized now that he was a part of her.   He would always be a part of her.   In time his influence would lift off her but embracing the damage he left would bring her peace of mind.   Acceptance is its own reward.
Her vision burst into color, and she was no longer looking at the scenes as a phantom observer.  This wasn’t a memory.  She was on a farm.   She recognized it, but it wasn’t a real place.  It was an idea she had in her mind.  There was a large farmhouse.  There were lots of other buildings around the property.  Greenhouses, barns, and sheds.  There was a huge garden out back.  She knew already there was a river nearby, even though she couldn’t see it.   This was the dream house her and Sal had spoken of.
The sound of children laughing drew her attention to the front of the house.   She walked from the backyard to the front, and as she rounded the corner, there was Sal.   He was with two young boys.  Both under five.  Kari had seen the children before.   A dream of what her life could be.   She stood at the corner and watched as Sal was teaching the two boys how to build a fire bundle.   He was sending them off to find sticks and bring them back to him.   He looked happy.  They all did.
Kari stayed there and smiled as she watched.   She wanted to stay there but afraid to move closer.  Scared her presence would make them vanish. That the scene would shift and she would lose them.  She crouched down and finally sat.   Her smile stretched across her face.  This was what she wanted.   Though it was more than just the family.
She knew that down at the river was a dock that Sal used for his transport company.  She knew one of those buildings in the back was a lab.  That the greenhouses had plants she was growing as materials.  She knew the other buildings were full of different projects and business ventures.   The dream was proof that her parents could have done anything, even with Kari, if they had been ambitious enough.  Sal and Kari were both ambitious and wanted a family.
Sal’s eyes looked to Kari finally and startled the woman.  She had yet to be noticed in any of her visions.   The eye contact was intense and full of need.  It was a familiar look the two shared often.   It was a look burned perfectly into her memory.   Sal rose to his feet and walked over to Kari and offered a hand to her.
Tumblr media
He said “It can all be ours, Kari.   Just take my hand.   Don’t tell yourself you can’t have this.   Trust me.   Believe in yourself.  We can have it all.  Just accept it, Kari.  Take my hand.”
A sudden sharp fear struck her like a slap across the face.   She was terrified of that hand.   Her parent's voices ran through her mind.  She was a disappointment. No man would love a broken woman.   She was a failure.   Everything that kept her from things she wanted.  Even Sal’s own voice telling her that he wanted a family and Kari couldn’t give that to him.  A memory of when he had ended their brief affair months and months before.
Kari knew this moment was about balance, acceptance of who she is.   Those kids playing in the yard were not hers, and that was okay.  He loved those kids.  She loved those kids.   He was offering more than his hand but a promise of acceptance in this future.  He wasn’t going to vanish like Strather.  He was her new family.
She reached up and took his hand, and he pulled her to stand.   The moment she was on her feet everything was gone.   She let out a sudden gasp and shot her eyes open.  The night sky was over her.   The dreams were over.   She lifted her hand and did not see fur.  She was herself and once again in the flesh.   She was naked, but she was always comfortable being naked.
She looked over to Mac and the circle she had been in.  It appeared Mac hadn’t moved.  Blood still dripped down her face.   Kari didn’t disrupt her. Instead, she walked barefoot and bare-skinned back to the Manor.   She slipped inside and got dressed.  Mac would return to the Manor when she was ready.   Kari left her the space to do her own soul-searching.

I don’t entirely agree with your examples of Eren having similar responsibility for his actions in comparison to Reiner. I know Reiner and the warriors did horrible things to innocent people but they were naive children! None of them had any idea about the people in Paradis. Eren however had all that knowledge and still chose to destroy Marley. Don’t you think that makes him especially more cruel? Or is he really as naive? I like Eren but he seems off the rails now.
[TL;DR I got a little passionate and wordy here, but the simple answers, at least based on my analysis and what has been physically presented to us in the story as of Chapter 100, are Eren is not more or less cruel and what he did is not a product of being naive.]
I honestly don’t understand when people talk about Eren having some sort of apparent “advantage” over those who also shook their moral balance at a time, as if that excuses other people’s actions for being unaware of what was going on in the rest of the world.  It seems to come down to Eren having access to memories of the past, particularly his dad’s, seeing what life was like on the other side of the ocean, actually living among them and experiencing their society, etc. etc.
No offense to those that think that but it is a very weak argument considering as far as we the readers know he only had clear access to his dad’s memories which are entirely full of hate for Marley.  It was all about Grisha seeking a way to avenge his sister’s death and when he couldn’t do anything about it he depended on his son’s discontent for their confinement and eventual mother’s death to accomplish the goal.  Even Kruger’s story painted nothing but a bad picture of Marley, even if he acknowledged a complicated Eldian history.  There were no “two sides” shown to him prior to him entering Marley.  He is not by any means all-knowing with infinite access to other memories and almost no sight of the royal side unless contacting with Historia and even that wasn’t a guarantee method of memory surfing.  As far as we know, he remains a young man with god-level abilities beyond comprehension stuck inside a locked box without any way to constantly activate them without an outside influence.  But I also mentioned that we lack context so this can easily be turned on its head and revealed otherwise due to any happenings during that timeskip.
On that note, ch100 showed us that Eren and Reiner are near exact parallels of one another and have been throughout the story; from their core intentions and placement in the world, the responsibilities they carry, the truths they both have access to, right down to the imagery.  It’s not just something Eren brings up, but Reiner thinks about before he puts the gun barrel in his mouth.  The only thing we are waiting for is whatever, if any, emotional aftermath Eren will experience after this whole ordeal is finished.  If the parallels continue he would probably feel just as guilty, despite what he ends up doing (i.e. killing the masses).
So in knowing that, Reiner experienced essentially the same things Eren did.  While he was a child, and I personally believe that manipulation played a role in his self-proclaimed selfishness, and he did suffer mentally from what he forced himself and his comrades to do.  He did grow up on enemy territory for 5 years.  He did experience the people that “pissed him off” but also encountered “good people.”  He may have reinforced a false persona to deal with the guilt, but even his “warrior” self is aware of the devastation he is causing and how innocent these people are—but no matter how innocent or vulnerable the Walldians are, he never wavers from his goal.  Even if he absolutely hates it.  He is one of the FIRST people to experience “two lives” and still chose to betray a side even though he realizes there are some non-truths to what Marley was feeding them.  The issue is that he is ultimately in too deep to pull himself out and thus enters his mental and emotional degradation and guilt that he lives with for 4+ years.
Nevertheless, the action is played almost to the illustration of what Eren eventually does, betrayal and destruction included.  They both follow a similar behavioral path and that’s what Eren has been raised on from the moment of his birth.  A large part of the reason both of them do what they do is because of an extremely dangerous version of “believing themselves.”  I don’t think Eren is working independently on this mission, it’s already been confirmed that there are others working with him, and the Survey Corps are absolutely not above killing people, even if they are manipulated innocents, so long as it is the survival of humanity, the one that they are part of, that prevails.  I don’t believe he is a bloodthirsty monster bent on destruction and I do believe there will be a lot of consequence coming his way, and he knows it.  He does what he thinks he has to do to survive.  To make sure his people are free in some way.  That’s what he is fighting for.  Whether this is the best way or not is up to future interpretation (you can take guesses now, but again we don’t have as much evidence as we’ve had throughout the series due to this timeskip).
Anyway on topic of who is most to blame for their cruelty, they both come off on par.  And you can argue that the mind of the child and the adult are different and should be treated different, and on a biological and societal standpoint that is entirely correct, but we are comparing how much information they have on the other side and the grey morality that comes with it and factually Reiner has years of experience and Eren was left in the dark longer.  By the time Reiner betrays the friends he’s known for 3 years, he is older and no longer that patriotic child that wants to bring honor to his family and himself, he has gone through enough that his naiveness gone; he was not much younger than Eren currently is.  Eren has a childlike, naive moral compass at the start as well, but I don’t think what he does now comes down to ignorance and it is definitely not impulse as he had done things.  This took a lot more thinking, a lot more dedicated planning.  This is not like the time he killed those kidnappers when he was nine.  Whether he is acting alone or not, there is thought and consideration on his part.  His very expressions are ominous and solemn, much like those of the warrior trio, when faced with the decision to transform, kill people, devastate lives, etc.  Even if there is anger and rage, they are not lone emotions within him.  He is aware of what is happening and what he is doing.
There have been theories that all of this has to do with his inheritance of the Attack Titan and/or Grisha and Kruger.  While I believe there is some influence, Eren has always been one to fight and motivate the underdog even as a child.  This takes a much larger scale.  He views his people as more vulnerable and he must stand up for them.  Because even if Marley is also manipulated, they are knowingly reacting to Eldian existence with direct violence, whereas Paradis never stood a chance because they had no knowledge to begin with.  Eren will always side with those people (unless something severely impacted that consistency then I don’t know what Isayama is going for haha).  That has nothing to do with his titan, he has always been this way, as he puts it.  I do have thoughts as to how the Attack Titan itself may influence him to act in certain ways, but the primary intent to protect the weak is just simply an Eren thing.  Whether that is something Grisha nurtured since in his childhood is yet to be told, though it seems more of convenience for Eren to be passed down that power.  He likely wasn’t raised quite like Zeke even if they eventually ended up getting swept up by their father’s involvement.
So I do not believe Eren is any less or more cruel with his actions than Reiner, for example.  I don’t think he is more or less cruel than a majority of actions taken by other characters who may also be blamed for risking innocent lives.  I also do not believe it to be a product of him being naive; and saying he is AS naive as Reiner discredits the things Reiner has learned along the way and the present inner turmoil he experiences now that he is less and less sure of the cause he was originally fighting for.  It’d be interesting if Eren came up to that point.  He did after all, despite all the memories of Marley being very negative and having zero experience with their society, have that vague reflection of his purpose during that ocean scene.  I think whatever it is he does from then on out will refer to that in more detail.
But as it stands right now, yes what he did was morally screwy, what he does will likely follow suit, but it is poor thinking to say he is an aggressor when in reality he’s been a defender the entire time, to criticize him if he has a step ahead of his enemies even though they have always been leaps ahead of him, to assume he is acting in raw anger when recent visuals show otherwise– and there is absolutely no reason for Isayama to waste his time drawing those expressions just to say he was lying.  Any of these can change to be truth, but for now the context clues in this arc and arcs prior point to another direction and it does not paint Eren to be this careless, ignorant berserk monster with little sympathy for his enemy’s circumstances.  Be upset by it all you want and take sides, but I don’t believe he is any more wrong or right than any other character, Reiner or otherwise, who have done essentially similar things with the same amount of knowledge.  At this point in the story, it’s all fair game.
Thanks for the question, even though I went on tangent, but I still hope I explained myself well enough!  It got me to circulate some thoughts I’ve had about this chapter for weeks now!
