I was thinking about how Steve calls Bucky “Bucky boy” during his hallucination of Bucky in Tales of Suspense (1959) #82 and how the ‘real’ Bucky wouldn’t like that. and then I remembered that even Sam, who didn’t personally know Bucky when he was young, refers to Bucky as the “kid” when talking to Steve in Captain America (1968) #606… he’s in his 30s. sorry, Bucky, you’ll never escape being thought of as younger than your peers/friends

#I think Sam and Steve’s intervention is well-written as two adults being concerned about and trying to help their other adult friend #and yet. just from the nature of an intervention it can’t help but come across a little like parenting #when Bucky died he had been old enough to properly enlist for 3 years #Bucky at 19: ‘stop calling me a kid I’m 19’#honey it’ll never end #anyway Steve also calls Bucky ‘son’ during that hallucination scene #would ‘real’ Bucky like that? I don’t think so #I think that Bucky’s dad’s friends that ‘looked after’ Bucky after he died did #and that wasn’t unwelcome #but Bucky had a different relationship with Steve where that they were partners was really important #it was significant for Bucky to realize that Steve thought of and was treating him accordingly as an equal #anyway it would actually hurt Bucky’s feelings to know what Steve’s literal first reaction to seeing Bucky was surprise #this was the person who was supposed to be his partner because he was a ‘kid’#my posts
