A young astro-physists accepts a challenge from his crush. 

“I challenge you to build one.”

“A time machine?”

“Yeah. And if I’m in there, you get to take me on a date.”

“Don’t go back on your words then!”

Some boys wanted to play football their entire lives while some wanted to run for office, but Hendery had bigger plans. He wanted to fly to the solar system. He wanted to have dinner in a place vaguely known to man with no gravity holding him back rather than tight tuxedos and fancy ballrooms. He didn’t want to settle for going on holidays with limited paid work leaves and annual holidays when he could orbit and sightsee the planets and all the celestial phenomena of the universe and float among the stars in his quiet sanctuary a hundred kilometers from Earth.

Undoubtedly one of the smartest kids on campus, Hendery and his group of fellow astro-physicists were isolated from the hustle and bustle of university. Sitting in their tutorial lab, they’re often huddled around some sort of blueprint while the outside world continues on with their own lives. Always brainstorming over different theories and calculating numbers that can be barely articulated by others outside of the faculty.

“Yangyang, I think there’s something wrong with the calculation for the negative temperature coefficient. It’s impossible for the reactivity of the nuclear reactor to increase as temperature increases, can you check the derivative again?” Xiaojun points out and traces the equation with his chalk as he squints at the calculation on the blackboard, struggling to find the error with the math.

“And for god’s sake, work on that penmanship please. I can’t even tell apart ‘3’ and ‘8’ when you write them this way.” Xiaojun complains once more as he directs his attention to Yangyang who was sitting on the lab counter sipping on his fifth can of cola for the morning and third box of pizza.

Hendery and Kun chuckled by the side as they sat on the side working on their own sets of calculations whilst listening to Xiaojun’s rant.

“Kun, I’m having problems solving these differential equations and I’ve been working on them for days and I’m having an absolute mental block, do you think it’s time to call for help?”

“Hendery, that’s quite unlike you because you usually solve them with no problem and it doesn’t help that this assignment is due in two days and Professor is still frolicking in the Bahamas while we’re stuck here.” Kun picks the stack of papers on Hendery’s table as he examines the messy cancellations and occasional tear stains and stray pen marks, numbers and alphabets also floating in circles in his head.

“Yeah, we definitely need help for this one.” Kun rubs his temples as he concludes that the damn equations on the paper were unsolvable even after showing them to Ten.

“Maybe you can ask Y/N? She’s pretty good isn’t she? Right, Sicheng?” Lucas suggests, tossing the football in his hands in Sicheng’s direction. 

“Who’s that?” all of them turned to look at Lucas.

“Y’know, the top student in the Applied Math Faculty. She went to the same advanced class as me and Sicheng in high school, maybe she can help solve your problem, Hendery.”

“I can bring her over if you want?” Sicheng taps on his phone looking for your number.

You walked into a room filled with these boys in which Sicheng had briefly introduced you to as he dragged you into their lab on short notice. Recognising only Lucas amongst the other foreign faces, you threw him a small wave. They handed you the questions and you took a quick look at it, dissecting it to bits before grabbing the chalk to solve it on the blackboard. With every line and number in the question, you felt the chalk slowly disintegrating in your hands as seven pairs of eyes burning holes in your back as you solved the question whose solution felt like it would take an infinite amount of years to write. But solved you did. White chalk covered your hands as you took a deep sigh of relief after completing the question. The boys stared in awe as they read the solution in fascination.

“It’s the Euler’s method, boys! I know it’s unconventional to use something from the ice age but it works best here!”

“How about this Y/N? Can you try this too?” Xiaojun led you to the other blackboard where he and Yangyang were working on.

You stared at the numerous equations on the board and though you were in a math major, all this math was making you dizzy too.

“I think you should check the numbers, it’s probably inverted or something since it is so long.” you chuckled.

“Always the best, Y/N.” Lucas comes over to give you a shoulder massage.

“Hi, my name is Hendery! Your math is outstanding by the way. I’m so impressed.” Hendery sticks out his hand to you.

“Well, hi there, Hendery!” you wiped the chalk on your skirt to clean your hands,

“Nice to meet you too and thank you. I’m flattered.” you waved his compliment off shyly.

From that moment on, you were well adopted into the team and before you knew it, you were spending hours and hours studying with the boys. Sometimes, the eight of you would skip frat parties to finish your research and assignments and head out to the local diner for some ice cream afterwards or sometimes drive out to the beach and all of you would just sit by the sea, watching the star-filled darkness while tracing the constellations in the sky, eventually falling asleep till right before sun rise.

To most of the boys, you were a close friend in their crew but to Hendery, you were something more. The more you impressed him with your intelligence, your humility and spontaneity, the harder he fell for you. He loved watching you as you excitedly trace the different stars in the sky and how you always wished you could visit the solar system one day, and hold one of the stars between your two hands. Hendery has never felt so compelled to know someone deeper until he met you as if the both of you, who are so similar yet a little different, were meant to meet as written in the stars.

“Y/N,” Hendery calls out as silence overcomes the crew as the other six boys retreat to their slumber.

“Yeah?”

“Do you see that ‘W’ in the sky? Do you know that that constellation has a story?”

“Tell me about it, Hendery.” you propped your body on your sides, turning to Hendery who was still looking up in the sky.

“It’s the story of King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia. Despite how bloated the Queen’s ego was, the King loved her so much that he begged to be exiled with her. Crazy, isn’t it?” he chuckles quietly.

“Well, Hendery. Love works in a funny way. He probably thought of all the time he would have to be separated from the woman he loved so much and the tiny little disputes they had wouldn’t even measure up to the infinite amount of love he had for her deep down.” you replied to him.

“I meant to tell you something, Y/N. Well, since the guys are sleeping like logs, I might as well say it right now. I like you. Like, a lot.”

“I get that a lot, Hendery. But I need a little more assurance than that.” though you could feel a blush creeping over your cheeks, your heart ached a little. It was the little voice that kept reminding you that ‘I love you’ were just empty words without action and assurance. Every confession was just a small reminder of that hollow space in your heart that carved itself whenever your father said those three words to your mother but decided to walk out of both your lives at the end of the day.

“What kind of assurance do you need Y/N?” Hendery sits up with his legs crossed and facing you as the moonlight basks on your skins.

“I challenge you to build a time machine.”

“A time machine?”

“Yeah. And if I’m in there in the next 20 years, you get to take me on a date.”

“Don’t go back on your words then!”

The idea of a time machine was just like a page out of a science-fiction book. No one has ever proven the theory behind the science of time travel and nor has anyone ever built one. Hendery reaches for probably the tenth book on the mysteries of the universe, which he had spent the entire afternoon reading and studying in the library.

“A wormhole?” Hendery stares at the article heading questionably, before reading on.

“A wormhole: a time-travelling portal created by energy fluctuations in positive and negative directions, each creating a curved space that opposes each other. When a connection is established, a wormhole is formed.”

“However, for a human to walk through the wormhole to travel in time, a supermassive black hole and negative energy is required to make a transversable wormhole.”

“One will then travel in the speed of light, known as time dilation. With the Laws of Special Relativity, a year away from Earth could be forty years into the future with this wormhole.”

Hendery takes a deep sigh, wondering if it's truly possible to build that time machine. He sat in his chair, swirling around as he chewed on his pencil.

“Well, if particles can pass through walls in Quantum Physics, man can surely walk through time.”

He worked day and night, analysing and experimenting different ways of creating that opposing energy to form a time warp. You came by occasionally to drop him some pizza or sandwiches, sometimes even blankets to cover him when he falls asleep in the lab while working. Sometimes, you would just sit by his side silently, both heads laying on the lab table. He always looked so happy in his sleep, his muscles eased and lips twitching into a smile once in a while. What were his dreams? Were you in them or were you just someone that will pass him by? Deep down you wished you didn’t propose the challenge to him and just let him take you out on that date, but the fear of not being there in his life or him in your life was probably enough to break you to pieces.

Finally, on one autumn afternoon, Hendery instructed the boys to stay out of the lab for a day so he could invite you over to watch him walk through the time machine.

“So Y/N, the time machine is done and all that’s left is to see if you’re in there and I can take you on a date afterwards right?”

“Yup.” you nodded, taking his hand in yours, holding them tightly.

“Promise to wait for me.” He asked as the both of you stood steps away from the machine.

“I promise.” you assured him, taking this opportunity to hold him in your arms.

“I’ll see you later, alligator! Plan on a restaurant, I’ll take you anywhere you want after this.” he waves, walking into the time machine and with a flash of light he disappears into the wormhole. Silence engulfed the room when you realised you were the only one left in the lab.

Hendery travels through the wormhole, watching moments of his life flash in front of his eyes: graduating university and going on a vacation with the boys and you in the Bahamas, buying his first car, entering graduate school and getting his first job at the Space Research Centre where he worked hard till he retired. He even sees his final days as he chased the Northern Lights in the cold night of Iceland. But, you weren’t there. He may have achieved all he ever wanted but you weren’t there, and everything else just became pointless to him. He wanted to run back to you and just tell a white lie for once, as long as he could keep you by his side, even if it wasn’t forever.

You returned back to the lab, it hasn’t changed much since you left, almost twenty years ago. You took a seat on the chair you sat when you waited for Hendery to return. He told you he would be back soon, but day by day, you returned to the lab but you were still alone and Hendery was still in the machine. The boys waited with you as they awaited the return of their friend. Nobody knew how long it would take for Hendery to return except for himself. Days turned to weeks, weeks turned to months and months turned to years. Now you are forty-five, your youth long gone and age slowly diminishing the glow your face once had, had two kids of your own and a businessman husband that was always too busy for the family. You wondered, would anything have been different if you knew the answer? You looked around the lab, reminiscing the days the crew and you spent, the best time of all your lives. 

“Y/N!” you turned around to the deep voice that called out to you.

Sadness slowly disappears as you were hugged by the six boys that filled your university life. All six of them looked as dashing as ever and glad to say that their cheerful positivity never left them at all. They turned to look at the time machine.

“He’s still in there isn’t he?” Lucas asked. It was always sad because Hendery was just like a crucial puzzle piece that was never found. The boys missed him as much as you did. All of you sat down and chatted and ordered pizza just like the old days. Ending the night, all of you slowly packed your stuff and got ready to leave the lab and return back to your own lives, hoping that the next time all of you reunite, the glitch in the time machine would have disappeared and Hendery would be back with all of you.

Just as all of you slowly walked to the entrance of the lab, a ray of light shines throughout the room, a thunderous noise sends vibrations throughout the room, turning around to see the antique time machine coming back to life. You swore you could hear the thumps of all your hearts racing clearly. A figure slowly forms among the bright light; slim, cladded in a checkered vest and coffee-colored pants and, hair pushed back with too much gel, just like Hendery’s. You couldn’t believe your eyes as you take slow steps forward, not wanting to get any of your hopes up. But there right in front of you, stood the man you wished had come back to you twenty years ago, Hendery Wong. Tears flowed uncontrollably as you couldn’t stomach the shock of finally seeing him after all this while. He still looked the same as he did when he hugged you for the last time. Time hasn’t caught up with him at all but it wasn’t the same for you and the rest.

“Y/N? Is that you?” Hendery’s fingertips slowly traced the tears that were rolling off your cheeks.

“Guys? Are you guys really here?” Hendery rushed into the arms of his brothers, embracing them as if he hasn’t seen them in a lifetime.

“You guys waited! How long have I been gone?” he asks, wondering why everything seemed to have moved forward except him.

“Hendery, you’ve been stuck in there for twenty years.” you told him, slowly sobering up from your crying, holding his hand and his fingers examining the band on your ring finger.

“Oh? You got married?” he asked, hurt apparent in his voice.

“I did…” your voice trailed off at the end.

“I waited for you to come back as promised, Hendery. But you never came back and we never went for that dinner you promised me to.” you could feel the tears slowly forming again.

That was when Hendery realised that what he saw in the wormhole was right; you were never going to be in there with him even till the last breath he took.

“Hey, don’t cry, alright? I’ll take you to that dinner okay? I promise. But for now…” he looks up reluctantly to face all of you.

“I’d like to go back. I have something important to do. And maybe we’ll see each other again.” Hendery speaks softly this time.

“See you again, brother.” Kun comes up and pulls him into a hug, his tears staining the cotton of Hendery’s vest.

“I love you, Hendery.” you said those three words, after twenty years of yearning. You wished that you could go back in time and right the wrongs and work against the tricks of time.

And with one last wave, Hendery enters the time machine once more.

Hendery finds himself in the lab again, did the time machine fail?

“Hendery, you’re back!” you raced back into the lab, with snacks and chocolate milk.

“Wait, where did you go?” he asked in confusion when he saw your younger self instead of your matured self.

“I went to get snacks while waiting for you, silly. So how was it? Are you going to take me on that date?” you teased him.

“Let’s talk about it over dinner, it was a wild ride! You wouldn’t believe it!” he slings your arm in his as the both of you leave the lab in all smiles. Hendery taking this chance to fight against fate and time in this one, in hopes he can change the future he saw in that wormhole.

A/N: It’s literally been a whole year since I’ve posted anything on here. This pandemic has given me a lot of free time. I’ve got a lot of ideas , two stories to post, and two stories to finish. I’m very excited to get back into my groove. Hope you all enjoy and are staying safe. Wear a mask, wash your hands, and Social distance. ✨

“Damn it all!” T’challa hissed, his hand flying onto the table. “Calm yourself!” Ramonda admonished, glaring at her son as Shuri frowned at the cake in front of her. “It has been weeks mama, weeks and still she shows no sign of improvement. Did we choose the dumbest of them all!”

“T’Challa you will watch your mouth!”

“So she can not bake a cake, neither can you. Everyone has a talent, maybe we should stop conforming her to our standards and look at her own.” Shuri pointed at Sirobie where she sat, her back facing the group.

“The cake is not the problem. The problem is that we have tested now, eight talents, and she has a knack for none of them. She is utterly talentless according to Wakanda’s standards. If she is to stand in for Kamyra, then she must present herself as an embodiment of Wakanda, held to Wakanda’s standards.”

“If only you would hold your betrothed to that standard, maybe we wouldn’t be in this position in the first place!” Shuri fired off, glaring at her brother. Sirobie stood quietly and glided out of the room, stopping only to glance back at the siblings. She sighed before continuing into the hall. Sirobie hurried back to her room, fighting back the tears burning the corners of her eyes. She blindly pushed open her door, jumping slightly at the women who stood in front of her. “Kasigo, Eshe,” she quickly wiped from under her eyes, “I was not expecting you until later.”

“We found your art supplies and thought we would drop them off for you to have after your session with the Queen, are you alright my lady?” Eshe frowned. “I will be fine, thank you both,” Sirobie offered a small smile. “ Are you sure you would not like some company?” Kasigo offered. “I am well. Or I will be.”

“If you insist, we will be back later tonight,” Eshe reaffirmed, both of the women dipping into an elegant curtsy. “Thank you,” Sirobi smiled, until both of the doors were shut. Glancing at the blank canvas and supplies, she let tears begin to fall from her eyes as she walked back out onto the balcony. She methodically set up her station, letting her tears fall freely in a trail from the balcony to her room.

A few minutes later, she sat in comfort in front of her easel. Rushing back into her room, she grabbed last week's sketch from her night stand and methodically traced the design onto the canvas. The scratch of the pencil lead, soothed the students nerves as she let the tears fall.

The tears began to slow, as the woman emerged from the fountain side. Minutes, then an hour passed before she placed the final stroke. Placing the pencil down, and finally wiping her eyes, Sirobie sighed, turning to grab her paints. Only to run smack into the king’s chest.

“You never told us you paint.” the king stated, staring at the mesmerizing sketch of the mountain. Sirobie moved around him to begin placing and mixing her paint. “You never asked me what I could do. You only assumed.”

She moved intentionally around the king. Finally allowing herself to move back to the easel once the brushes, paint, and water were all comfortably positioned. She began by filling in and highlighting the rich brown of the woman’s skin. Displaying her natural curves and glow where the sunlight hit her skin.

“Why do you start with her body and not the mountain, or the large expanse of sky.”

“She is the focal point of the painting. She deserves time and detail. This also allows me to mold the elements of nature to highlight her beauty, and presence, even more.”

“You paint beautifully. Yet you study film. Why?”

“I am a storyteller at heart. Sometimes I paint what the director in me, envisions in my head.”

“I apologize for my conduct and words earlier.”

“Why?”

“Because they were cruel and wrong-”

Sirobie’s hand froze mid stroke, lifting slightly off the canvas. “No, not an excuse or the polite answer. Why are you apologizing if you mean it? Perhaps because Queen Mother is angry at you?” She continued on with her light strokes.

“Because I did not mean it. I also made you cry. That is something I promised myself that I would never do. If I could help it. I never wanted to make someone cry.”

“Why do you say things you do not mean your majesty?”

“Because I cannot grow close to you. You are not mine to keep. You look like her. But you are not her. I am quickly falling for you, but I can’t have you. I thought that by pushing you away, the separation would be easier for us both.” The king sighed. “I hope you can forgive me lady Sirobie. Let me earn your trust.”

The student placed down her brush. “We can see. Starting tomorrow. At the hospital.”

“I’ll see you then?” the king offered a small smile. Sirobie turned to slight one of her own. “I’ll see you then.”

Sirfobie practiced her measured steps as she walked down the hall to the king’s room. The desired effect was to glide. The young woman in training was not there yet. She had graduated from appearing as though she was perpetually tripping, to trying to hold back a run. Upon noticing her practice, T’Challa smiled. “You are improving sithwanda sam. “

His words startled the student. She quickly regained her balance and looked up. “Oh thank you.” she replied. “Shall we go?” the king offered the woman his arm. Sirobie hesitantly accepted. “Please, relax around me. If we were truly engaged, we would be all we have besides our families. There isn’t much privacy in this lifestyle.”

“I can tell. I guess it’s best that this is fake then.” Sirobie replied. “If that is the way you feel.” T’Challa replied, stepping away to open the door for Sirobie.

“Thank you.”

The king slid in the other door. As soon as the door shut, the driver pulled off. T’Challa cleared his throat. “I thought that maybe we could get to know each other a little better.”

“Why, I am not your fiancée,” Sirobie sassed, staring out the window. “I know. I just thought that it would be nice to know each other a little better-”

“Why are you all of a sudden being so nice T’Challa.” She cut him off. “I thought, and last night-”

“I don’t know where I stand with you T’Challa. The first few weeks I’m here, you embarrass me. Chastise me like a child. Essentially call me talentless. But now you want to get to know me? I don’t understand you.”

“I am trying to be better. I was acting out of character. I am just so afraid of what happens if this plan falls through. If I do not marry the oldest child of the Habredies royal family. Shuri, must marry her brother. He is a crude young man. With no feelings and qualms about laying a hand on women. I do not want that for my little sister. She is too bright and strong willed to have to endure that. He will break her. I cannot let that happen on my watch.”

Sirobie, placed her hand on the king’s squeezing softly. “I am trying to keep my grandfather’s promise, but Kamyra is not my idea of a wife. She hates my country, and complains non-stop. She is image over everything, I often feel like I can not let down my walls around her. So as awkward as it is for me to admit this. I was afraid that I would fall in love with you Sirobie. I just can’t be selfish in this situation.”

“I understand. I at least hope that we can become friends,”the student offered. “Of course,” The king squeezed her hand in return as they pulled up to the hospital.

“This is it,” Sirobie sighed as the driver opened T’Challa’s door. The king briefly let go of her hand and hopped out of the car. He reached a hand back in to help the student out of the car.Once she was out, he kept her hand around his as they made their way into the hospital.

“Your majesties,” a middle aged woman smiled. My name is Hapset. I am the director of the Women and Children’s hospital of Wakanda. If you’ll follow me, the children are very excited to meet you both.” The woman smiled, leading the couple down various hallways and staircases to an open play area.

There, nurses played with children, ranging from toddlers to highschoolers. All doing their own activities. The room lit up as soon as several children recognized the couple.Murmurs of “the king” and “she’s a princess” erupted around the room as children moved towards the couple. Nurses grabbed the toddlers and escorted them back to the nursery as Mrs. Hapset began to speak.

The couple was quickly flooded with conversation and stories. They laughed, took pictures and even played games with the children. Many of the teenagers were surprised that Sirobie and T’Challa both knew and used snapchat. As well as they both attended school out of country. The king hoped that wouldn’t be too big a deal, as they had both let it slip. Taking their final pictures and waving their goodbyes, the couple followed the director to the nursery.

“In here, we house our toddler daycare during the day, for parents who can’t be here with their children. As well as babies who are awaiting adoption.”

Sirobie’s face dropped as she gestured to a crib. “May I?”

“Of course your majesty.”

T’Challa watched as the student stepped up to the crib and gently lifted the baby from its cradle. “Hi love.” She cooed gently, rocking the baby.

“That’s Camden. His mother had just finished a war dog mission in the Americas.”

“Where is she now?”

“The war dog life is not suited for children. Just as some are not suited for parenthood.” The director smiled sadly.

“Of course,” T’Challa replied, watching as Sirobie bounced the child in her arms. For a brief second, imagining if she was the mother of his child, and she was staring at him like that. It was hard to imagine Kamyra in that position. With a newborn nestled in her arms. “Cwan I see?” a little boy walked over to the queen. He couldn’t be older than three. Quickly checking with Hapset, Sirobie bent down to the boys height. “Why he face so small?” The little boy tilted his head. “He is still growing. One day he’ll be just as big as you.”

“Really?” the little boy smiled up in wonder at Sirobie. “Really,” she beamed. “Wow. Was I that small?

On a whim, T’Challa found himself bending down with Sirobie and the child. “Yes you were. But look at how big and strong you are now. I bet you could take the black panther in a fight. “Black panter.”

“That’s right, a little black panter,” Sirobie smiled. Shooting a brilliant smile at T’Challa. A flash of light alerted the couple that they were no longer alone. And that this was not their family. Press flashbulbs went off all around them as they said their goodbyes and made a hasty exit.

Once back in the limo, T’Challa directed their driver off the path, and onto a dirt road. “You might want to take your heels off for this part. The king removed his shoes as Sirobie did the same.

T’Challa spoke to the driver and he quickly backed up and drove off. “How are we supposed to get back?” Sirobie pouted. “We shall walk,” the king replied nonchalantly as he began walking away from the student.

“Do you truly like children?” he asked as she caught up to him. “I’ve always had a soft spot for them.They make me genuinely happy.”

“The way you looked at that baby today. You seemed truly happy. At peace.”

“I was. It has been so long since I was able to hold a baby. I rarely get to see my younger sisters. I took care of them when they were that little.”

“You truly miss them?”

“I do.”

“Kamyra does not want children.”

“Do you?” The king did not reply and Sirobie feared she had crossed a line. “I’m sorry if that-”

“Yes,” the King interrupted, “I do want children.”

“Oh.” Sirobie nodded.

“Sirobie Johnson. May I take you out to dinner tomorrow?”

“I thought we shouldn’t get close?”

“We should not. But I hardly doubt I’ll be able to forget you either way,” the king smiled.

“Then, yes. I’ll have to check my schedule with Queen mother first of course,” Sirobie teased.

“And I with Okoye,” the king chuckled. “I look forward to it Lady Sirobie.”

I’ve decided to step back into the fan character game, so here’s my DC OC, Mmeeie. She’s an imp from the 5th Dimension, and since she can teleport between universes + dimensions at will, she’s a general DC OC as opposed to just belonging to one particular series. 

Of course, I still designed her around the universes I’m the most familiar with, those being the animated!Teen Titans series, the animated!Teen Titans Go! series, the animated!Static Shock series, and to a lesser extent the Hanna-Barbera Superfriends series. (I actually pulled design elements from all four shows into her look, can you guess all four?)

Under the cut is a mini profile of sorts, written mainly so I have a better grasp of her character. 

Name: Mmeeie (pronounced as the letters M-E)

Summary: Finn Stormbreaker, apprentice to the Arch Mage Luke Skywalker, is presented with a mystery by his master.

Finn raises his hand and knocks on the heavy, wooden door to master Skywalker's study feeling that mix of excitement and trepidation he always did when entering his master's study.  

It doesn't matter that he has been his apprentice for the better part of a decade now, that feeling has never changed and Finn doubts it ever will. There is always an ambience of barely tamed power around the man that is unsettling to most and Finn knows that even if the other masters in Mage Hold respects and revers their leader, they also deep-down fear him and what he might do should the full extent of the man's power one day be unleashed.

And Finn? He better than any in the Hold knows the strength that lies tamed by a gentle heart, has seen it up close, but the trepidation he always feels has little to do with Skywalker's strength. No, it is rooted in the kinship he feels with the man, a kinship that he knows his master returns. He too carries more strength than any other apprentice of his age, a fact that causes unease among his peers and wariness among the other masters. Had Skywalker not decide to take him on as his personal apprentice, Finn isn't sure what his life in the Hold would have been like.

He sighs and pushes the thought away; such speculations are pointless and will lead him nowhere.

Raising his fist, he knocks again, louder this time.

"Enter." Skywalker's voice is vague and muffled, clearly the man is not in the parlor just beyond.

Opening the door Finn steps into the sparsely decorated room.

"You wanted to see me master?" he calls out.

"Yes, come on in here." Skywalker's voice come from his small, private library.

Where the parlor's furniture is sparse, the room almost barren in appearance, the library is overflowing. Every shelf is stuffed with books and scrolls, the long table along the outer wall, just beneath the tall windows, is filled with parchments and contraptions. At one end stands his master, bend over something lying on a piece of velvet.

The man looks as he always does. Long blond hair and beard gone grey early and the parts that had been grey when Finn first met him are now white. He's dressed in simple dark grey tunic and trousers, rather than the elaborate robes many of the other masters affect, a mode of dress Finn has adopted as well, and his metal hand – a construct of magic and ore – is ungloved as it always is when they're in private.

"Come here young Stormbreaker and tell me what you think of this?"

Finn gives a bemused smile at the epithet, as well earned as that name is it is also another reminder of how different he is. No other apprentice carries one and its origin a story that is told among the other apprentices, a story Finn wishes would die down.

If Skywalker notices the smile he gives no indication, but waves the young man over.

Finn studies the object that lies on top the green cloth closely. It's a piece of flat, blank, reflective material, jagged breaks on one side, the other one curved and with an inch-wide edge of silver running along it. The silver is bright and untarnished, but the patterns edged into the surface looks worn away as if with great age. But above all else Finn can feel the lingering power from the object, though broken and useless now it once held great magic.

He briefly glances away from it to Skywalker.

"A magical mirror? Or, the corner piece of one?"

"Most likely. What else can you tell me?"

Finn returns his attention to the broken mirror, bending over it and squinting at the edgings in the silver's surface. Careful not to touch it, lest his touch trigger the lingering magic, he traces the curves of the delicate scripts, their form shaping themselves into something familiar to him.

"Is that... Mindae?" he asks.

"Perhaps, you tell me. You can read it after all."

"It, looks like it, but then again not quite. Can I borrow..." His voice trails off as he reaches for a coal stencil and notebook. Slow and methodical he tries to recreate the edgings on the page of the notebook.

"No, it's not. It's Sh'mra. But that tongue died out over two millennia" Finn looks slowly from his notes to Skywalker. "Where did you get this?"

"My niece. Rey knows I'm interested anything from Caarian era, especially from the western realms. She send me this a couple of weeks ago, so far I've been able to make little of it. I was hoping your expertise with ancient tongues could help."

"I'm afraid I can't help much. The writing is too faded to make out what most of it is supposed to say and what I can read makes little sense. I can make out the phrase for mountains and two words usually connected to words for seeing or discerning, but I can find no terms for that which are legible. Or hinted at in the illegible parts."

Finn makes a face.

"Sorry," he says. "Have you tested what powers it may have held?"

"Yes, but I'm not adverse to a second opinion. But I advise caution, I had quite a surprise when I tried. It might sting."

Skywalker steps back and gestures towards the broken mirror.

Putting down book and stencil Finn takes a deep breath and focuses his mind. Holding out one hand over the mirror fragment he probes gently at the lingering magic, heeding Skywalker's warning. He has barely brushed against its surface when he feels a sharp sting, like the jab of several blades.

Even prepared Finn recoils with a sharp gasp and almost retreats, but stubborn curiosity wins out. It is rare to find magic this old, even in this broken form and he wants as closer look if at all possible. Direct study is obviously out of the question, but maybe he can edge his way in.

Most likely the mirror surface itself had been the main part of this object's magic, so if he focuses on the silver edge.

There are traces there, of something airy and light, the hallmark of scrying magic, but also the smell of snow and frost. Strange, scrying spells almost never carries scents with them but rather focuses on sight and sometimes sounds. The only thing that would was-

He opens his eyes and looks directly at Skywalker.

"It was a portal."

"You're certain?" the older man asks, though Finn can see in his eyes that Skywalker had reached the same conclusion.

"Certain, no. But it all makes sense. Something relating to distance and scrying, but that isn't actually scrying. I was a portal." He looks at the mirror piece again. "But it must have been tiny. Nothing larger than a house cat would have been able to fit through it unless it had some very strange proportions. Who would expend the energy and effort, to make a permanent portal that small?"

"My thoughts exactly and a very good question."

"So what do we do next?"

"A journey I think."

"A journey?"

"Yes, we can learn nothing more from the object itself at the moment, so I suggest we find out more about its origin instead. And for that we'd need to go to Silverbridge and talk to Rey and the libraries there hold more on the ancient realm this undoubtedly came from than any of ours would."

"The capital? We?" Finn asks perplexed.

Ever since he became apprenticed to Mage Hold a decade ago, he had never been more than a few day's journey from it, excluding his visits to his family. And before that he had only seen the vicinity of his family's small town further north. Silverbridge, the capital of Levaron, was several weeks travel on horseback, further than he'd ever been.

"Yes. It's time you start interacting with the wider realm as a mage, learn what that entails."

"I'm not a mage yet," Finn reminds him.

"You soon will be. The time of your testing draws near." Skywalker sighs. "Perhaps I should have done this sooner, but I didn't want to interrupt your studies too much and you seemed to be content in the hold. But it is far past time you get to know the wider realm. You'll be using your powers to protect Levaron soon, you'll need to know what it is you're protecting. And what you're protecting it from."

The last sentence sounds ominous in Finn's ears but before he can ask his master what he means by it, Skywalker claps one hand on his shoulder.

"Go pack, Finn. We'll be leaving at midday."

"Yes, master Skywalker," Finn says as he bows crisply.

"Meet me at the stables when you're done packing," Skywalker calls after him as he leaves.

Finn calls back an affirmative as he exits his master's rooms.  

His head is filled with thoughts as he heads back to his quarters to pack. Most of them are practical, related to what he needs to bring for such a long journey, but beneath it all hums a fanciful song.  

Silverbridge, capital of the realm of Levaron, a crossroad for trade and a center of learning. And once also a focal point for sorcerers, before the Mage Hold was moved to the eastern mountains.

The knowledge that he's finally going to see the city with his own eyes, walk its streets, makes Finn grin widely as he walks. He even forgets the mystery of the ancient mirror for the time being, his head instead filled with thoughts of a walled city and its mystical silver bridge.

The coronavirus crisis could push the U.S. to adopt online voting by 2024

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden recently suggested that, as the public health emergency deepens, all-mail ballots are “worth looking at, quickly.” Mail-in ballots could be helpful as a stopgap right now, but it’s a slow and inefficient process in a digital age that demands a better answer. In addition, the lack of emergency funding for the United States Postal Service showcases how we cannot depend on this mode of voting for much longer.

Although false starts like Iowa’s Shadow app fiasco appear as setbacks, we indeed have the building blocks for online voting; we just need the determination, focus, and execution to bring it to fruition. It’s much too late to consider a transition to online voting in this year’s elections. But we could make the move in time for 2028, with state-wide beta tests in place as early as 2024. Although we may be eager for implementation sooner rather than later, it will take time for us to do this right.

The most prominent concern is, of course, security. Online voting must overcome several significant hurdles before it can be rolled out widely. These hurdles include voter ID fraud, a learning curve for users to understand the user interface, and attempts by hackers to take down the back-end networks and tamper with mobile apps and data, which could be difficult for election officials to detect.

Federal government, military, and private sector studies have all concluded that internet-based voting is not secure and shouldn’t be used in U.S. elections. The Department of Homeland Security recently released guidelines that point to high security risks for online election voting.

“Until there is a major technological breakthrough in or fundamental change to the nature of the internet, the best method for securing elections is a tried-and-true one: mailed paper ballots,” democracy watchdog group Common Cause has said.

As the chief technology officer of a cybersecurity company with several government customers, I’ve been watching this issue closely. Truth is, the technological building blocks are available now for online elections, such as that for collecting, storing, and mining data at scale securely.

Here’s what else is needed:

For starters, 100% of the source code needs to be open source. The mobile applications and server-side code should be open and shared for everyone to examine and poke holes in. A single organization operating behind closed doors can’t be expected to get this right. A community approach is the way to go.

We also need a process to trust and verify votes. Every American would need Real ID compliant identification, and the voting process would require layers of multi-factor authentication. Once placed, votes would need to be transparent in the sense that the person is anonymized, but certain characteristics about them are known, such as where the individual resides and who they voted for.

A potential problem could be some humans’ lack of trust in the digital process. Mail ballots can be verified, but how would online voters know their ballot was received?

This could be remedied by requesting a confirmation that would then require the voter to confirm their identity once again. It could also be an instance in which blockchain serves as confirmation that someone voted but their identity is masked. Concepts of homomorphic encryption could be applied to ensure that voting data is encrypted yet can still be searched.

Then there’s the voting experience itself. The process would have to be so straightforward that everyone from Boomers to Gen Z could easily take part. That means the final product that voters will interact with, via the web or a mobile device, will need to have undergone a significant amount of usability testing. The apps will need to feel natural to users — and will need to support dozens of languages and be accessible to voters with disabilities.

We’ll need a robust system to collect votes. I don’t see scale as a problem, though. These days, one can develop a service on an off-the-shelf laptop that can write hundreds of thousands of events per second. With good architecture and design, and stress testing, a strong system can be deployed.

Finally, we’ll need to think about how we add security in every layer: the network, the app, and the data store. We’ll have to build and implement controls to generate and review system audit logs, limit access, and apply zero-trust concepts. This might sound like a lot, but it really isn’t much different than what regulated organizations in financial services and healthcare already do today.

A final question we will need to address is who puts the pieces together and creates the software required for online voting. Should a government task force take the lead? A public super company like Google or Apple? Some combination of technology leaders?

The bottom line is, saying online voting won’t happen seems foolish. Surely, voting will happen digitally eventually; it just needs to be done right. And the coronavirus crisis may provide the push we need to make it happen sooner rather than later.

A single organization operating behind closed doors can’t be expected to get this right. A community approach is the way to go.

We also need a process to trust and verify votes. Every American would need Real ID compliant identification, and the voting process would require layers of multi-factor authentication. Once placed, votes would need to be transparent in the sense that the person is anonymized, but certain characteristics about them are known, such as where the individual resides and who they voted for.

A potential problem could be some humans’ lack of trust in the digital process. Mail ballots can be verified, but how would online voters know their ballot was received?

This could be remedied by requesting a confirmation that would then require the voter to confirm their identity once again. It could also be an instance in which blockchain serves as confirmation that someone voted but their identity is masked. Concepts of homomorphic encryption could be applied to ensure that voting data is encrypted yet can still be searched.

Then there’s the voting experience itself. The process would have to be so straightforward that everyone from Boomers to Gen Z could easily take part. That means the final product that voters will interact with, via the web or a mobile device, will need to have undergone a significant amount of usability testing. The apps will need to feel natural to users — and will need to support dozens of languages and be accessible to voters with disabilities.

We’ll need a robust system to collect votes. I don’t see scale as a problem, though. These days, one can develop a service on an off-the-shelf laptop that can write hundreds of thousands of events per second. With good architecture and design, and stress testing, a strong system can be deployed.

Finally, we’ll need to think about how we add security in every layer: the network, the app, and the data store. We’ll have to build and implement controls to generate and review system audit logs, limit access, and apply zero-trust concepts. This might sound like a lot, but it really isn’t much different than what regulated organizations in financial services and healthcare already do today.

A final question we will need to address is who puts the pieces together and creates the software required for online voting. Should a government task force take the lead? A public super company like Google or Apple? Some combination of technology leaders?

The bottom line is, saying online voting won’t happen seems foolish. Surely, voting will happen digitally eventually; it just needs to be done right. And the coronavirus crisis may provide the push we need to make it happen sooner rather than later.

With every litter there are people who wait until they see the puppies on the site to apply, most times they are too late, but not always. There is an inevitable shifting around as people re-think the idea of a puppy. Which they should – puppies are a LOT of work. (They aren’t cheap, either.)

  What they require more than anything is time and commitment. If you don’t put the time in while a puppy is young, it will grow up to be a difficult dog.

At the rescue every year we get a few returned dogs who were adopted out as puppies and now are somewhere between one and two years old. Their adopters can no longer deal with their lack of manners, their destructive habits, their reactivity to other dogs or people or any number of issues that should have been dealt with while the dog was a puppy. Remember Bugs?

While, yes, just like people, dogs are individuals and there are some inherently challenging dogs; many of the issues for which dogs are returned could have been averted if the adopters had put in the time to raise their puppy well.

After the puppies are fully vaccinated, socialization is critical. With the current conditions, new adopters will have to get creative. These puppies are tiny, so you could literally carry them everywhere with you. Training doesn’t end with the puppy phase. It is even more critical during the teenage phase (6 months – 2 years). That’s when doubling down and perhaps enlisting professional help is important. Taking your pup to classes – manners, obedience, agility, nosework, even frisbee or dock-diving will challenge them and give you opportunities to reinforce their good behaviors.

Consistency and commitment are absolutely vital. I tell my adopters to use positive reinforcement methods of training. Too many people are quick to resort to negative reinforcement because it can get an immediate reaction, but it is the wrong approach and can backfire creating an anxious or aggressive dog. Okay, enough puppy lecture. You have been warned. All of that said, it is incredibly rewarding to adopt a puppy and raise it well.

These puppies are thriving and getting bigger every day. It remains to be seen whether they will ‘catch up’ after their hookworm episode. The smallest puppy is just over four pounds and the largest is seven and a half pounds! The puppy charts put them all between 18 and 36 pounds, which is larger than the first calculation I made two weeks ago, so they are definitely jumping their curve now that we’ve rid them of the hookworms. I hope their adopters will let us know how big they ultimately get.

Their little personalities are blooming. They are bonded with me and follow me everywhere when I’m out in the puppy yard with them. To a pup, they are loving and people-centered. When they get too crazy, I scoop one up and snuggle it and it immediately calms right down.

Even Millie, one of the most outgoing pups (and the one still available for adoption!) is putty in my arms. I’ve been watching her lately because she has so much energy and I want to start channeling it in the right way, and I’ve come to realize that yes she does have a lot of energy, but so do some of the others. The difference with Millie is that she is vocal. She communicates with the other puppies (and me) with her voice more than they do.

All of them are starting to find their big dog voices, though, and it is no longer possible for my kids to sleep through the ruckus when the pups are ready for breakfast. (Which is a good thing since all three still need to ‘go’ to school and work virtually.)

In just over a week, we will be foster-free at this house. Rockee left with his adopter on Sunday. He was smitten from the moment they met and jumped in her car without a backward glance. Here’s hoping the third time is the charm. I’m pretty certain it is. Check out these pictures his new mom sent:
