just watched ES’s trailers, and I wanted a second opinion. Is there anything that immediately resembled Greek mythology to you in either of the videos, because to me I mostly saw biblical stuff like the multiwinged ES.
i guess it makes sense considering her design, but I feel like we got biblical allusions with SM and I’ve gotten so used to Greek-inspired ES that id be disappointed if she wasn’t, yknow?
Yes, actually! Let's pull out the title screen they revealed to show you what I mean

First thing is that little dude on the right haha. Pavlova Cookie greatly resembles Eros (most people know him by his Roman name, Cupid), son of Greek goddess Aphrodite and god of love and sexual desire. A talented archer, he would take aim at gods and men alike and shoot them down with his arrows, causing them to fall in love with who or whatever they're looking at (Aphrodite often had him do this to specific people she told him to, to suit her own goals/purposes. She's a horrifying combination of vindictive mean girl and wannabe matchmaker. Methinks Eternal Sugar employs Pavlova in a similar way)
I know the place gives "Garden of Eden" vibes, which is fair and true (but a little lame tbh). But I personally think it looks just as much like the Garden of the Hesperides, a fabled lush garden from Greek myth where trees bearing fruit that granted immortality grew (and were guarded by the Hesperides, daughters of the titan Atlas). The fruit in question are golden apples. What's that in that little snake's clutches over there, next to Eternal Sugar? A golden apple :)
It's more apparent in another picture (see attached, in the lower right corner), but: the architectural style of the place is very much Greek. The columns are ionic, which is a column design/style created by Ionian Greeks around the 6th century BC. Ionic columns are primarily characterized by the spiral scroll pattern at the top

Eternal Sugar's dress is actually quite Greek-looking. Obviously it's not 1:1, this is a cartoony video game not a historical documentary, but that style is very Greco-Roman. Look up traditional ancient Greek tunics/chitons and other attire, especially for women, and you'll see what I mean
She's actually not holding a harp. That is a lyre, a stringed instrument that's similar to a harp. The lyre is a common and beloved instrument in Ancient Greek culture and myth, most notably played by Apollo, god of the sun and music, and Hermes, god of travelers and thieves (and a lot of other things, he's a bit of a jack of all trades). The former also gifted a golden lyre to the famous Greek hero/protagonist Orpheus, who was a master musician and used that lyre to charm Hades and Persephone into agreeing to let him lead his deceased love Eurydice out of the Underworld (if you know that story, you know how it ends...)
Again, I understand that the place bears resemblance to Eden. Which it does. But aside from that, and aside from the nod to the Garden of the Hesperides, the whole thing reminds me of the island of the Lotus Eaters, a location stumbled upon by Odysseus and co. on their journey back home from the Trojan War during Homer's Odyssey. In that place are flowers that are exceptionally beautiful and even more delicious - but they're cursed. Eating them turns you into an addict almost immediately, and they rob you of your memories and will to do anything or leave the island at all. Odysseus lost a few of his men to them. I get the impression that the foods in the Sugar Paradise are like those lotuses, and Holly and co. run the risk of becoming Lotus Eaters too
To bring up the Odyssey again, Eternal Sugar herself gave me a lot of Circe + Calypso vibes in the trailer. Both are women who fell for Odysseus upon meeting him and trapped him on their islands for a time, using magic to control and manipulate him (Circe is a goddess of sorcery, Calypso is a magic-using nymph). Other people had to intervene on Odysseus's behalf to free him from their spells; otherwise, he would've stayed stuck forever. Sugar seems a bit like them; developing an attachment to Holly (both because she wants the Soul Jam back, and out of genuine sentiment. Remember that the Ancients and Beasts are canonically soulmates) and luring her into her strange, "happy" world and trying to trap her there forever
I'm a little disappointed with the nods to Christianity ngl. I love Christian/Abrahamic lore and symbolism very much, but I didn't want that for Sugar. We already had it for Shadow Milk. I wanted Sugar to be 100% Greek, but... no, I guess lol. Gotta have Eden and those little cherub looking guys and the snake with the apple. It gets boring after a while. Christianity is the most famous religion to ever exist in the history of the world, EVERYONE knows Christian iconography to some degree, why can't we have something different for once. Mystic Flour and Burning Spice were awesome in that they leaned into cultures that don't get a lot of recognition in the West (China and India), you know? Yes, Greece is "the West" as well, but idk. I'm just tired of the same Christian imagery always being used. And I say that as a Christian myself haha
⭐ I forgot to add this lol. I suppose the Christian imagery isn't entirely out of place necessarily, because Greece actually is deeply Christian and has been for an extremely long time (Greek Orthodox. Ancient Greek is actually the first language the Bible was translated into, fun fact!). But even so. I wanted Greek mythology, not Abrahamic religion lol
#anyway I hope all of that proves to be a satisfactory answer#do note that I'm not a scholar. this is all from memory and past research#there might be things i missed. i might've got something wrong. i just analyzed it to the best of my ability#I'm just a history and mythology nerd haha#hopefully we get more Greek stuff when the update actually comes out. I look forward to it#cookie run kingdom#eternal sugar cookie#hollyberry cookie#crk update#eternal sugar crk#merchant asks#pavlova cookie

I've been wondering about your Finnish url ever since learning that you're an English speaking American, and now that you don't have any roots in Finland, I'm super curious. Where does it come from?
Sorry about that time I just started to talk to you in Finnish :D
Haha, no worries! The short answer is: I’m a nerd.
The long answer…
When I was a kid, I was super into any mythology I could get my hands on. And I was a young Tolkien nerd who found out The Kalevala and its poetical style were hugely influential on Tolkien’s worldbuilding. So of course I had to read it. And, as a weird folk music kid, I also fell sideways into any music featuring kantele, which was a gateway drug into other Finnish folk and folk-y music (Värttinä, Pekko Käppi, Hedningarna’s “Karelia Visa” album, etc.).
I’d only lived in the USA and Asia at that age, and most of the “mythology” books I’d ever been exposed to were Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and some machismo-heavy Norse stuff. All very common and very easy to find in the kiddie section of my school library. Finnish mythology and folklore was the first time I had to work a little to learn. I started just with The Kalevala (and copious footnotes), then the internet, later a Finn on LiveJournal who would straight-up translate lyrics/verse, and then puttering around to the local Nordic museum.
I have a lot of nostalgia for that as my first foray into what was, for me, something that stands at the transition point between my being a Mythology Kid™️ and being a more adult-shaped-creature who had to consider mythology, not as an inert curiosity and kiddie hobby, but as one aspect of traditions that exist in relation to real things like nationalism, identity, Romanticism, ethnography, and all that.
So, with that history, when I set out to make a tumblr username, I picked a name I knew from The Kalevala, because literally every other name from stories or myth I knew or could think of was already taken.
A further little joy was that I also loved the Moomintroll books as a kid in the 90s. And some kids in my neighbourhood in Hong Kong had access to the TV show (I don’t remember how) so I got properly scared of the animated Groke. So now, knowing about Tuulikki Pietilä and Tove Jansson, I have a further pleasant coincidence from my already very coincidence- and happenstance-heavy username.
And I do have to agree with Tolkien, in the end: Finnish is a fucking cool language. People are always like “ohh French is so romantic!” and sure maybe but is French cool. I’m not a linguist, but I know the number of grammatical cases a European language has is directly proportional to how hard it fucks.
I… hope that’s an answer that makes sense 😅

I loved the way Anne was saved in Elias' story with his mother and him conducting an Filipino ritual to return the curse to it's sender, Rookwood. That was really cool how the ritual worked, where the curse took the form of a dog apparition and they were able to direct it back to Rookwood in the form of an infected dog bite. It's really poetic and takes on the themes of HL in a unique way I don't really see. I also loved that bit because it reminds me of an incident in Fallout 4 where a bandit leader's ability to run his gang and shake down victims was compromised also cause of an infected dog bite, making them a somewhat less and organized stronger target the player may face.
Thank you! I'm happy you liked that headcanon of mine. I have a whole-ass rationale under the cut if you wanna read about it.
To be honest, it was quite interesting to study the longevity of curses and whether or not some curses can be broken. At the same time, after watching Agatha All Along, when Agatha Harkness said "Once vengeance is loosed, you can’t reel it back in", I thought about Anne Sallow, my lore for Elias, and how this principle posed by Agatha Harkness could somehow work. In a way, in retrospect, I found this to be somewhat applicable since this looked like a curse that would at least be difficult to break. Also, perhaps it was also a curse even Rookwood cannot break, given how intense it is. (Sound off in the comments if y'all have a different take on this)
The whole ritual I referenced in Elias' story comes from the psychological horror film, Nocebo. The film involves a curse that took the form of ticks that were carried by a spectral dog. For this story, I researched on the history of local witchcraft and shamanism and found that this highly spiritual and natural magic complements the magic systems that exist in Hogwarts Legacy. Additionally, we're exploring ancient magic in the context and frame of the Western world in the game, so having some representation from the Philippines of what is considered ancient and ancestral magic could be a nice way to touch on Western and Eastern magic and spirituality.
The use of a dog in particular as the form is also referential to Nocebo, which references Philippine folklore and mythology as well. The dog is one of the forms the Aswang, a malevolent spirit that preys on humans at night, can shapeshift into. There's also the black dog in English folklore known to be an omen of death.
Enough nerding out from me haha! I'm just happy you enjoyed my ideas for my MC's lore and a headcanon for Anne (and by extension, Sebastian).

Radar would probably like fantasy novels if his hero comics are anything to go by. Anything with superpowers or magic would probably be up his alley.
I'll be honest, even though Trapper is one of my faves, I'm not entirely sure what he'd like. I can see him being a mixed bag: if it's good, he'll read it, if it's not, he'll stop and find something else. He's a very lighthearted guy so I can see him liking lighthearted reading, something to distract from the horrors. Maybe shorter novels since he's a surgeon and has two children at home, so it wouldn't take him super long to finish in his limited free time. I can see him reading kids novels to his girls when it's bedtime.
If I remember correctly, Klinger has a (smutty) romance novel that he makes Charles read him in Operation Friendship, so it's safe to say Klinger likes romance books. I can see him designing his own dresses based on descriptions or pictures (from the cover) of the lead heroine's outfits. He ALSO likes poetry and had a poetry book in Springtime that he gave to Radar. He's a romantic sweetheart and I love him so so much Klinger best character <33
I can see Charles liking (auto)biographies and other nonfiction books, potentially anything about history. He mentioned having a butterfly collection (?) so maybe he enjoys reading up about them as well. I can see him having a guilty pleasure book genre as well, but I'm not sure what that would be, it's been a while since I've seen the later seasons. He seemed to be uncomfortable with Klinger's smut, so maybe not romance.. maybe mystery? He'd probably pride himself on figuring out the killer before the detective. Or maybe he'd like super nerdy fantasy novels like The Hobbit, something that's super long and detailed.
Henry strikes me also as a smutty romance novel guy, but maybe a bit more private about it than Klinger. Would throw it across the room if someone found it in his stuff and be like, "haha that's crazy who put that there??" Not to make fishing and golf his whole personality but fishing and golf strategy books? So he can git gud at his hobbies, of course. Maybe he even reads fish nature guides (?) so he can ID whatever he catches.
Hawkeye is for sure a mixed genre kind of guy. He'll read whatever he can get his hands on. A personal headcanon of mine is that he's neurodivergent in some way (I'm no expert so I can't name what he's got with 100% certainty but I did write a fic where he had ADHD similar to that of a friend of mine so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ) so I can see him fixating on a certain genre or book series for a long time before eventually moving on to the next obsession. He just loves reading!
Father Mulcahy obviously reads the bible, and I would imagine he enjoys it since it's his whole everything. He seems well versed on other religions as well so it's safe to say he likes reading about theology, mythology, etc. I can also see him being a history nerd. He's just a very well-read, smart guy if his extensive vocabulary is any indication.
Ack, I haven't a clue about Frank. He reads the bible, I know that, but I'm not sure if he actually enjoys it or does it cause that's what he was taught to do :/ He probably wanted to read superhero or fantasy stuff as a kid but was super limited due to his stifling, unloving upbringing. All his pleasures are probably guilty pleasures tbh.. He and Margaret read military manuals together as foreplay or something sgddhdgsh
Okay now onto Margaret. She's strict but I'm not sure that that applies to her reading material. She probably reads romance, though she hides her smuttier ones. She liked reading army manuals and procedure books cause she was an army brat and she wanted to please her dad, but after her arc she now does everything for herself rather than to please others. She'll read almost anything written by a female author because male authors can be such a fucking headache sometimes, she puts up with men enough in her daily life why should her fiction be dictated by them too?? And fuck it, she likes Frankenstein by Mary Shelley cause it's my favorite book <3
We know BJ likes mystery novels and Potter likes cowboy novels, but what kinds of books does everyone else like?
#this took me like 2 hours cause im at work rn but i think i got everybody ?? also im not rereading this so sorry if i rambled a lot lol#but yeah 👍

Hiii, italian nerd anon here! Saw you mentioning you "could" add the Divine Comedy on your list and I arose, since you know, I did my university thesis on it XD Okay so, it's of course a very heavy read, basically every inch of it is full of metaphors and references something else, sometimes storical, sometimes mythological, sometimes about literature. But not everything is necessary to understand it, of course: even with the minimum, I think it's a beautiful read. I would suggest a version with less notes and a good translation of the verses, but I would not suggest a retelling, since it's something that has to be approached in verses imho. I have read it in english a couple of times and unfortunately there are things that gets literally lost in translation, but it's a beautiful read nonetheless. (I would suggest even just to hear some parts in italian, just to hear how it sounds)
My thesis was on how the Divine Comedy could be a fun read, and I still stand by it. I, uhm, just want to say something that I hope doesn't come off wrong (if it does I'm sorry, I swear I don't want to offend): it's of course heavy on the religion part, medieval christianity. I'm an atheist myself, but I saw your vent comic, and I don't know if it could trigger you in some ways. That's all I wanted to say :) I think it's perfect at the end of your list - also because it does reference a lot of those greek tragedies, so it's nice if you know what they're about already! XD <3
Ooo noted!! Yeah the fact that its a heavy read is my current only deterrent HAHA since me and English are very reluctant friends
My library has a book on it so I'll try to check it out and see if it doesn't make my brain explode! If that doesn't work I might grab an audiobook
Also don't worry anon I have a complicated history with religion but by God religious imagery is my indulgence. (I say this, having just posted an animatic of an ex convict and a bishop) many things went wrong with Christianity but the stained glass windows they got absolutely right

I wont ask abt how you go about outlining/plotting for Owl People as i know that would likely be a way too complicated thing to answer, but how have you gone about sorting through fae mythology to find the parts you wanted to use? Is there any particular inspirations or is it a bit of everything?
haha well it's not as methodical as sorting through anything, I think. A lot of the fairy stuff in the story is things I accumulated growing up as a folklore/mythology nerd and also someone living in scotland/ the uk, where there are weird little fairies and goblins and devils in so much of our landscape and culture - I actually find it quite hard to pinpoint specific fairytales and folklore that contributed to Owl People, because so much of it is just vibes, or bits and pieces I don't know where I picked up because they feel like they've been with me forever!
Plotting owl people is something that I've had several runs at - each time I'd get so far and lose steam as I think I wasn't ready for the story, and over those tries I've refined the parts i am attached to and dropped anything that doesn't feel important or exciting. the current story is, to an extent, improvised, as I've generally only plotted a book ahead in broad strokes, and only a chapter ahead in detail, and then I'd get to the end of what i had plotted and go "oh, wait, this should be a totally different thing to what I thought." Incorporating the fairies and building their lore kinda follows that - there is so much in my head that I doubt I'll get round to puting on the page, as I have to follow what feels important to the story as I'm telling it - for instance, this is a story about borders and boundaries and how people get displaced across them, and who enforces them and the cruelty in that. there's loads of that in british fairy stories, and our landscape is full of doorways to other kingdoms and shifting borders, so I've drawn on things like the many folktales about stone circles and fairy rings and underground goblin kingdoms. these things also lend themselves to an urban setting, as cities are also full of layered histories, visible and invisible boundaries, and marginal or forgotten spaces that are ideal settings for fairy stories! A lot of it is about looking for ways to fit the stories of wild fairies I grew up with into the very manmade spaces I live in now.
wow I didn't mean to write you an essay, i hope that about answers your question?

Heyo Shifu! How are you now? Are you treating yourself? I hope your health will get better!
Speaking of dubs, huh? The only fact I know is that there probably won't be any offical russian or kazakh dubs in near future, which actually cool by me. I love to read and listen to english, I've been doing it for 3 years now(purely to become better at it), and about a year ago I was brave enough to start writing on english everywhere, which kinda improved my skills in language(as you see, hehe).
I would've had an issue of sharing my ideas for LMK, but haha, no, I love that I'm only one around enjoying this masterpiece 💖. Somehow I don't want people around me to start LMK, because I'm the kind of person who does the background checks, like the original chinese mythology, literature like JTTW, versions of every story, history, meaning of the names, traditions, clothes, etc., and my friends/family don't do ANY of it(and I can't blame them for it, it is a lot of work and not required). Maybe I'm being a mean nerd, but I want to enjoy the show and it's inspiration, it's roots. And I'm a sucker for mythology, because my own country hardly has any
So yeah. I kinda hope there won't be russian or kazakh dub... ᶘ ⊙ᴥ⊙ᶅ
Yes, my reason is dumb, but no, I won't stop thinking that background check is not necessary. Not when you love the whole thing
- 🐍
Mhm mhm, I gotcha. I can understand that.
Also, I’ve been well, just have to survive this week lol

Update:
I'm very sorry for the false hope, it turns out this was a live stream happening only on December 23rd, and not on-demand streaming.
On a happier note, have scanned the English summary from the official booklet! My apologies for the blur on the sides, I didn't want to mess up the book's spine too bad.
Some highlights, according to my sister who actually saw the play live, and according to me who is a nerd:
You know that joke about how the BBC only has ten actors? Well, kabuki has more but a solid half of them are from the Ichikawa line.
The opening scene with Goemon sitting atop the Sanmon Gate at the Nanzen-ji temple is a direct reference to the kabuki play Sanmon Gosan No Kiri about the OG Goemon Ishikawa
During that scene, the Sanmon Gate actually ROSE UP an entire floor out of the stage
Aime: "They got an actual monkey to play Lupin. I don't know how they did that. The guy came onstage and I immediately thought 'Who tf let that monkey in here?'"
The summary states that "Lupin has come with Jigen to rob Goemon of the Meryumaru", but according to Aime it was more like Lupin standing at the bottom of the Sanmon Gate pulling his tongue out at Goeon and shouting "Haha I've got the other sword sucker!!! You'll never catch meeee!!!!"
They played all the music themes on shamisen, and the audience pretty much lost their entire shit when the opening theme started playing (if you wanna hear what that would sound like, check out this (unrelated to the kabuki play) video! it SLAPS HARD AF). What I wouldn't give to hear Tornado and Zenigata March on the shamisen, my dudes.
In Act I scene 4, Lupin and Jigen legit steal Goemon, and by that I mean they stuff him into a basket and make off with the basket. With Goemon in it. Deadass. They fucking stole an entire samurai. I love them XD
In Act II scene 3, "Lupin III and Goemon have a showdown" does not even BEGIN to explain that scene. There was an actual fucking WATERFALL ONSTAGE with ACTUAL FLOWING WATER (something that a kabuki tour guide told me is actually done since the Edo era????? apparently????? kabuki is INSANE), and Lupin and Goemon actually fought IN the waterfall, with Lupin in basically just his shirt and underwear (which were STRIPED WHITE AND BLUE), and when I say "fought" I mean "splashed water at each other like children". You can actually watch that scene online here.
In Act II scene 2 where Lupin appears disguised as Goemon's ghost, Aime described this as "Goemon shows up with a wicker basket on his head" (that was actually a Komuso monk outfit). Itohoshi clocks that it isn't Goemon by asking the "ghost" to play the shakuhachi flute, and says she knows what her lover's playing sounds like. Later, in Act III scene 1, Goemon plays the shakuhachi to fend off the demon king, an experience that Aime described as "the most horrendous music I have ever heard".
The closing scene is a direct reference to the Red Jacket double episode "The Mysterious Gang of Five / Kooki Kabuki". I'm assuming it's a common introduction scene in kabuki, but I don't know enough about it to be sure.
"My girlfriend turned into a sword." "...That's rough, buddy."
The mechanical dolls described in the summary are a real thing, they're called karakuri ningyo and they're pretty damn cool.
Himiko is also a semi-historical (more like mythical) figure of Japanese history/mythology; she was allegedly the queen of Yamato (pre-Japan) and was a shamaness.
And I'd like to highlight this gem from the summary, which imo encapsulates these people's entire relationship: "Goemon and Lupin III become comrades. Fujiko is interested not in becoming a comrade, but in searching for Himiko's treasure." Or in other words, "Maybe... the real treasure... was the friends we made along the way 💕🤗✨" "No way, I want my FUCKING GOLD!"

HAVE I MENTIONNED RECENTLY THAT MY SISTER IS THE MOST AMAZING PERSON ON THE FUCKING PLANET?????? 😭💕
She went to see the new Lupin III kabuki play on my behalf, called me on the phone for an entire hour to give me a detailed report and listen to me nerd out about the anime references, and then she sent me official merch of the play for Christmas all the way from friggin' Japan. She is amazing, I do not deserve her 😭
#hope you enjoy this summary!#i REALLY wish i could have seen the actual play#but this is already much more than i could have normally hoped for#a massive THANK YOU to my sister for getting me this book and telling me about the play#she is THE BEST!!!!!!!#lupin iii#lupin the third#kabuki#lupin iii kabuki

Canon/Soushi as a solid BROTP. Hear me out
I'm a fan of Seri/Soushi as a brotp as much as the person next door but Canon and Soushi deserved to have more BROtp screentime. Here's why:
Whelp, can't go the first paragraph without mentioning Kazuki's harem! In my opinion, Canon would try to be a lot more subtle with her feelings for Kazuki out of respect for Maya, whom she knows has a huge, undying crush on Kazuki. When it comes to Soushi, however, I can imagine her taking some time trying to process his and Kazuki's relationship (on a side note, I know that Canon is Irish and was probably raised Catholic. However, I learned that homosexuality was decriminalized in 1993 in Ireland and this is the 2130s so....eh?)
Ultimately, she decided that seeing Soushi mostly as a love rival wasn't worth it because hey, they seem to have a lot in common, considering they've been in the military longer than every other kid in their generation.
UNTAPPED CHEMISTRY. Full stop. I mean DID YOU SEE their interaction in Dead Agressor? Canon going 'Yes sir!' after Soushi instructed her to check the bathwater after exactly 15 minutes is ADORABLE.
They're both nerds. Full. Stop. Soushi is a certified bookworm and we know Canon totally has a thing for mythology (or at least spends hours reading just to name her Fafners right). I love imagining a scenario in which Canon asks questions about Tatsumiyajima's customs and culture to Hiroto and Seri but Soushi barges in and goes "I'll tell you what Tatsumiyajima culture is really like!" And he whips out e-books about Shinto gods and samurai facts for Canon to read.
Now, for the headcanons
Soushi totally likes to recommend documentaries to Canon. At first, it was just to help her learn their culture and history better, but she starts giving him history film recs and they ended up with a mini-movie club. Hiroto eventually begged them to let him join because he wants to study filmography) dragging Seri in the process.
In a modern AU, they'd totally watch mega stuff like Don't F**k With Cats and talk about it when they meet and Kazuki just sits there absolutely mortified
They come across bad movies and they watch stuff together at the Alvis longue with Canon and Soushi going full-on movie critic while Hiroto, Seri and sometimes Akira just be like "haha Sharknado bad"
They invite Kazuki and Maya to watch horror or slasher movies just for shits and giggles. Maya thought it would be the perfect opportunity to sneak a handholding with Kazuki but it just ends up with Soushi and Canon having the time of their lives watching Maya and Kazuki scream and trying to escape throughout 70% of the movie.
