So on dendryte's suggestion, I read a paper called "Feed your friends: do plant exudates shape the root microbiome?", and it is awesome and filled with ideas that were new to me, and all in all was very exciting. Like, I didn't even know about/remember border cells, and they apparently do a whole lot! I'm back from work now, so now I'm going to share the Questions I have, and am going to spend the weekend looking for sources on:
1. As crop rotation was developed for a tilled, monoculture system as a way to address the disease issues that pop up in such a system, is crop rotation actually beneficial in a no-till, truly polyculture setting where care is taken to support mycorrhizae?
As we know know that plants alter the population of bacteria in the soil, and that these population compositions differ between plant species, is it possible that there might be some benefits to planting the same crop in the same location if you're not disrupting microbe populations through tilling?
2. Since we know that applications of nitrogen can cause plants to kick out their symbiotic fungal partners, increasing their vulnerability to pathogenic fungi & drought, might it be better to place fertilizer outside of the root zone so as to force the plant to use the mycelium to get at it?
How far can mycorrhizal networks transport mineral nutrients? Are they capable of transporting all the mineral nutrients plants need? In other words, can I make a compost pile in the middle of the garden and be lazy and depend on the fungal network to distribute the goods?
3. How deep can fungal hyphe go? In other words, in areas with shallow wells, and thus fairly shallow water tables, can we encourage mycorrhizae enough to be able to depend on them for irrigation?
4. For folks on city water, does the chlorine effect plants' microbiome both above and below ground?
5. When do plants start producing exudates? If you had soil from around actively growing plants of the same species you're sowing, could the bacteria and fungi play a role in early seedling vigor & health?
6. Has anyone directly compared the micronutrient profiles of the same crop grown in organic but tilled settings against those grown in no-till, mycorrhizae-friendly settings?
7. Since we know that larger molecules, such as sugar, can be transported across fungal networks between different species (Suzanne Simard is where I first food this info) , have we checked for other compounds created by plants? Say, compounds used by plants to protect against insect herbivory?
8. Since we know blueberries use ericoid mycorrhizae rather than endo- or ectomycorrhizae (which are the two types used by most plants), but gaultheria (salal & winter green) use both ericoid & ectomycorrhizae, and alder uses both endo & ectomycorrhizae (and fix nitrogen too!), and clover use endomycorrhizae, might blueberries be more productive if there's a nearby hedge of salal/wintergreen, alder, and clover? Willows and aspens also both use endo & ecto, so they could be included, and the trees could also be coppiced for firewood or basketry supplies.
I'm going to spend some time this weekend reading research papers. If anyone happens to know any that address these (or related questions), please send them my way!

The world is experiencing a micronutrient food and health crisis. Micronutrient deficiency now affects billions of people. Micronutrients are key vitamins and minerals and deficiencies can cause severe health conditions. They are important for various functions, including blood clotting, brain development, the immune system, energy production and bone health, and play a critical role in disease prevention.
The root of the crisis is due to an increased reliance on ultra processed foods (‘junk food’) and the way that modern food crops are grown in terms of the seeds used, the plants produced, the synthetic inputs required (fertilisers, pesticides etc) and the effects on soil.
In 2007, nutritional therapist David Thomas noted a precipitous change in the USA towards convenience and pre-prepared foods often devoid of vital micronutrients yet packed with a cocktail of chemical additives, including colourings, flavourings and preservatives.
He noted that between 1940 and 2002 the character, growing methods, preparation, source and ultimate presentation of basic staples have changed significantly to the extent that trace elements and micronutrient contents have been severely depleted. Thomas added that ongoing research clearly demonstrates a significant relationship between deficiencies in micronutrients and physical and mental ill health.
Prior to the Green Revolution, many of the older crops that were displaced carried dramatically higher counts of nutrients per calorie. For instance, the iron content of millet is four times that of rice, and oats carry four times more zinc than wheat. As a result, between 1961 and 2011, the protein, zinc and iron contents of the world’s directly consumed cereals declined by 4%, 5% and 19%, respectively.
The authors of a 2010 paper in the International Journal of Environmental and Rural Development state that cropping systems promoted by the Green Revolution have resulted in reduced food-crop diversity and decreased availability of micronutrients. They note that micronutrient malnutrition is causing increased rates of cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and osteoporosis in many developing nations. They add that soils are increasingly affected by micronutrient disorders.

Balancing Nutrients with Organic Fertilizers: A Practical Approach
In farming and gardening, it's vital to strike the perfect nutrient balance in the soil to ensure plants thrive and yield abundantly. Organic fertilizers offer a practical and environmentally conscious way to maintain that essential nutrient balance in the soil. In this article, we'll dive into the importance of keeping the soil's nutrient levels in check, the benefits of using organic fertilizers, and some helpful advice on making the most of them.
Understanding Nutrient Balance:
Plants require a variety of essential nutrients for their growth, including macronutrients like nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), and micronutrients like iron, zinc, and manganese. Imbalances in these nutrients can lead to various issues. For instance, an excess of nitrogen can promote lush foliage but hinder fruit or flower production, while a phosphorus deficiency can limit root development.
Soil naturally contains some of these nutrients, but over time, continuous farming and gardening can deplete them. To maintain healthy and productive plants, it's essential to supplement the soil with the nutrients it lacks.
The Benefits of Organic Fertilizers:
Organic fertilizers are derived from natural sources, such as plant matter, animal products, or microbial activity. They offer several advantages when it comes to nutrient balance and soil health:
1. Slow Release: Organic fertilizers release nutrients gradually as they break down, preventing the risk of nutrient imbalances or leaching. This slow-release nature ensures that plants receive a steady supply of nutrients over time.
2. Improving Soil Structure: Organic fertilizers enhance soil structure and increase water-holding capacity. This allows the soil to retain nutrients better and provides a hospitable environment for beneficial microorganisms.
3. Microbial Activity: Many organic fertilizers contain beneficial microorganisms that contribute to nutrient cycling in the soil. These microbes help break down organic matter and make nutrients more available to plants.
4. Reduced Environmental Impact: Organic fertilizers are environmentally friendly as they do not contribute to water pollution or harm beneficial soil organisms. They are a sustainable alternative to synthetic chemical fertilizers.
Practical Tips for Balancing Nutrients with Organic Fertilizers:
1. Soil Testing: Before adding any fertilizers, it's essential to perform a soil test to understand your soil's current nutrient status. This will guide you in choosing suitable organic fertilizers and determining the required application rates.
2. Choose the Right Organic Fertilizers: Select organic fertilizers that match your soil's nutrient deficiencies. For example, bone meal is a good source of phosphorus, while compost provides a mix of nutrients.
3. Follow Application Guidelines: Organic fertilizers come with recommended application rates. Follow these guidelines to avoid over-fertilization, which can harm plants and the environment.
4. Use Compost: Compost is an excellent organic fertilizer. It not only supplies a variety of nutrients but also improves soil structure. Adding compost to your garden or agricultural plot helps maintain nutrient balance.
5. Crop Rotation: Practicing crop rotation can help prevent nutrient depletion in the soil. Different crops have varying nutrient requirements, so rotating them can ensure the soil remains balanced.
6. Mulching: Applying organic mulch, such as straw or wood chips, can help retain soil moisture and reduce nutrient loss. As the mulch breaks down, it also contributes to the nutrient pool.
In conclusion, achieving nutrient balance in your soil is a critical factor in successful gardening and farming. Organic fertilizers not only deliver vital nutrients but also enhance soil quality and boost microbial life, fostering the overall health of your soil. By adhering to these user-friendly recommendations, you can tap into the advantages of organic fertilizers, ensuring the thriving condition of your plants and the environment.

Understanding Soil Composition and Nutrient Requirements
Successful gardening begins with healthy soil. As a home gardener, understanding the basics of soil science is essential for creating a thriving garden. Soil composition and nutrient requirements play a crucial role in the growth and productivity of your plants. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the fundamentals of soil science, including soil composition, pH levels, and essential nutrients. By gaining this knowledge, you'll be equipped to optimize your garden's soil health and foster robust plant growth.
Soil Composition: Soil is a complex mixture of minerals, organic matter, water, air, and living organisms. Understanding the components of soil will help you gauge its quality and suitability for gardening purposes.
Mineral Particles: Soil is composed of various-sized mineral particles, including sand, silt, and clay. Sandy soil is gritty and drains quickly, while clay soil is sticky and retains water. Loam soil, a balanced mixture of sand, silt, and clay, is considered ideal for most plants.
Organic Matter: Organic matter consists of decaying plant material, animal remains, and microorganisms. It enhances soil structure, increases water-holding capacity, and provides essential nutrients to plants.
Water and Air: Soil must strike a balance between water and air for healthy root growth. Well-drained soil allows excess water to escape while retaining enough moisture for plant uptake. Adequate air spaces in the soil enable roots to access oxygen.
Living Organisms: Soil is teeming with life, including earthworms, insects, bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms. These organisms contribute to nutrient cycling, soil aeration, and organic matter decomposition.
Soil pH: Soil pH measures its acidity or alkalinity on a scale of 0 to 14. Understanding your soil's pH level is crucial because it affects nutrient availability to plants. Most garden plants prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil, with a pH range of 6 to 7.5.
Acidic Soil: pH values below 7 indicate acidic soil. To raise the pH, add lime or wood ashes to the soil. Acid-loving plants like blueberries and azaleas thrive in acidic soil.
Alkaline Soil: pH values above 7 indicate alkaline soil. To lower the pH, amend the soil with elemental sulfur or organic matter like compost. Acid-loving plants may struggle in alkaline soil.
Essential Nutrients: Plants require a range of essential nutrients for healthy growth. Understanding these nutrients and their roles will help you provide the necessary elements for your plants' success.
Macronutrients: Plants require macronutrients in large quantities. These include nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). Nitrogen promotes leafy growth, phosphorus supports root development and flower production, while potassium aids overall plant health.
Secondary Nutrients: Secondary nutrients include calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and sulfur (S). While needed in smaller quantities, they play vital roles in plant development and function.
Micronutrients: Micronutrients are required in trace amounts, but they are equally important. Iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), boron (B), molybdenum (Mo), and chlorine (Cl) are examples of micronutrients. They support various physiological processes within plants.
Soil Testing and Fertilization: Regular soil testing is essential to understand the nutrient content and pH level of your soil. Soil testing kits or professional laboratories can provide detailed reports on nutrient deficiencies or excesses. Based on the results, you can adjust nutrient levels through organic amendments or commercial fertilizers.
Organic Amendments: Improve soil fertility and
structure by incorporating organic amendments such as compost, well-rotted manure, or leaf mulch. These amendments not only provide essential nutrients but also enhance soil structure, water-holding capacity, and microbial activity.
Commercial Fertilizers: If nutrient deficiencies are identified through soil testing, you can supplement your soil with commercial fertilizers. These are available in different formulations and ratios, such as balanced (10-10-10) or specific nutrient-focused fertilizers. Follow the instructions on the packaging to ensure proper application and avoid over-fertilization, which can harm plants and the environment.
Soil Maintenance and Improvement: Maintaining and improving soil health is an ongoing process. Here are some practices to consider:
Crop Rotation: Rotate your crops each year to prevent nutrient depletion and minimize the risk of disease and pests. Different plants have varying nutrient requirements, so rotating crops helps maintain a balanced nutrient profile in the soil.
Mulching: Mulching around plants helps conserve moisture, regulate soil temperature, suppress weeds, and gradually add organic matter to the soil as the mulch breaks down.
Cover Cropping: Planting cover crops, such as legumes or grasses, during the off-season or between plantings can improve soil fertility, control erosion, and enhance organic matter content.
Avoid Compaction: Minimize soil compaction by avoiding excessive foot traffic or heavy machinery on garden beds. Compacted soil restricts root growth and hampers water and air movement.
Proper Watering: Water plants deeply and infrequently to encourage deep root growth. This helps plants access nutrients from a larger soil volume. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to waterlogged soil and root rot.

Agriculture Schemes: SOIL HEALTH CARD
1.Soil Health Card Scheme was launched by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on February 19, 2015 at Suratgarh, Rajasthan.
2.The objectives of the Soil Health Card (SHC) scheme are to issue soil health cards to farmers every two years so as to provide a basis to address nutritional deficiencies in fertilization practices.
3.Soil testing is developed to promote soil test based on nutrient management. Soil testing reduces cultivation cost by application of right quantity of fertilizer. It ensures additional income to farmers by increase in yields and it also promotes sustainable farming.
4.The scheme has been introduced to assist State Governments to issue SHCs to all farmers in the country. SHC provides information to farmers on nutrient status of their soil along with recommendation on appropriate dosage of nutrients to be applied for improving soil health and its fertility.
5.The Nutrient deficiency in India is in the order of:  95, 94, 48, 25, 41, 20, 14, 8 and 6% for N, P, K, S, Zn, B, Fe, Mn and Cu respectively.
6.Improving fertilizer/nutrient use efficiency is important rather than applying more fertilizer in Indian agriculture. Nutrient use efficiency presently is low ranging from 30-50% (Nitrogen), 15-20% (Phosphorus), 60-70% (Potassium), 8-10% (Sulphur) and 1-2% (micronutrients).

How To Care for a Bonsai Tree
Prevent your bonsai trees from withering and and avoid its premature death. Knowing how to care for a Bonsai tree will help you enjoy a thriving miniature of your favorite tree species for years or even decades.
Tumblr media
thetreecareguide.com gathered essential information and tips on how to care for your Bonsai tree and help it thrive disease and pest-free.
Bonsai Tree Care
Though Bonsai trees are more delicate than regular trees and plants, a few simple pointers should help you successfully take care of your miniature. Consider the following care information and tips:
1. Bonsai Tree Location
In most homes, the only place where a Bonsai will thrive is at a South facing window. A lot of light is essential for your tree’s health. If your Bonsai is placed just a few feet away from a window, the light intensity will drop significantly, slowing down or stopping its growth and ultimately killing it.
2. Watering a Bonsai Tree
The most crucial element of Bonsai tree care is watering it. How often a tree needs to be watered depends on:
The tree species
Tree size
Soil mixture
Climate
Pot size
Time of year
Do not water your tree if the soil is moist, but avoid letting the tree dry out. As a beginner, you can use your finger to check (one centimeter deep) the soil moisture. If it's dry, water your tree. With time, you'll be able to see rather than feel when it’s time to water your tree.
Tip: Your tree’s soil-mixture influences how often your trees will need to be watered. Bonsai trees typically thrive on a mixture of ½ akadama, ¼ pumice, and ¼ lava rock. For those unable to water their plants regularly, use a soil mixture that retains more water. This can be accomplished by using more akadama or including compost in your soil.
Note: Akadama is a naturally occurring, granular clay-like mineral used as a soil component for bonsai trees and other container-grown plants.
3. Fertilizing a Bonsai Tree
Trees growing normally will naturally extend their root system in search of water and nutrients. Since Bonsai tree root systems are confined to pots, fertilizing them regularly during the growing season is essential for them to thrive.
Typical indoor Bonsai trees can be fertilized year-round, while older and more developed trees can be fertilized during the species’ growing season (typically early spring through mid-fall). Tree fertilization varies depending on:
Tree health
The tree species
Time of year
Tree development
All fertilizers contain three fundamental elements; Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potassium (commonly labeled as NPK):
Nitrogen increases leaf, stem, or “above ground” growth
Phosphorus encourages healthy root, fruit, and flower growth
Potassium is known to enhance a tree’s overall health
Growers and gardeners will use different ratios of NPK for different tree species and during different seasons.
Tip: Look for fertilizers containing micronutrients like Iron, Manganese, Boron, Molybdenum, Zinc, and Copper for increased growth and health.
4. Repotting a Bonsai
Tumblr media
All bonsai trees need to be repotted and root pruned to maintain continued good health. Keep in mind that as the top of your tree grows, so shall its roots. Root pruning will encourage new growth, while repotting offers an excellent opportunity to replace old, depleted soil.
Here’s how to repot your Bonsai tree:
Lift the tree from its pot - The root mass will likely match the contours of your pot
Use a root hook - Gently loosen and comb out the tangled bottom third of the root ball
With sharp and clean pruning shears - cut off the bottom third of the root ball
Tip: Shorten the large, heavy roots. A bonsai tree’s most essential roots are the more delicate feeder roots.
Prepare the pot - Add a light layer of fresh soil to the pot, with a mound of soil in the middle
Replace the tree - Place the tree in its original position and spread the roots out evenly
Add soil - Add more soil and gently work it in around the roots with the root hook
Tip: After repotting, let the tree recover for 10 to 15 days out of full sun and wind, avoid fertilizing until new growth emerges, and water only to keep the root/soil moist - not soggy.
5. Bonsai Tree Pruning
When should a Bonsai tree be pruned? Regular maintenance, damage removal, and shaping pruning can be done anytime year-round for Bonsais kept indoors.
Major branches should be carefully trimmed with clean pruning shears or sharp scissors, while very small growths can be cleanly pinched away with your fingers.
Trim away any dead leaves or overgrown branches and stems to promote new growth. Maintenance pruning encourages the development of lateral branches and refines the shape of your Bonsai.
How Do You Care for an Indoor Bonsai Tree?
In this article, you discovered essential location, watering, fertilizing, repotting, and pruning information to help you care for your Bonsai tree.
Properly caring for your Bonsai tree will encourage it to grow and thrive for many years to come.
Ignoring your Bonsai tree’s care needs will lead to its decline, vulnerability to disease and pest infestation, and eventual death.

Your Detailed Guide to Maintain Kikuyu Grass Successfully
Tumblr media
For several decades now, Kikuyu grass has stood as a versatile, resilient, and attractive turf option for different landscapes in Australia. The most significant feature of this Kikuyu grass is its ability to thrive in diverse conditions. When coupled with its low maintenance requirements, it becomes the favourite turf among homeowners and commercial landscapes. Just like any other grass, Kikuyu grass also requires some maintenance, look after and care. The steps are elementary, and we have covered them in this article.
HOW TO CARE FOR KIKUYU GRASS?
Kikuyu grass is considered a challenging, fast-growing, and economical option, and all these features make it an incredibly popular turf in Australia. It has a dense, evergreen carpet that is resilient and capable of bouncing back even after excessive foot traffic and damage.
WHAT TOOLS ARE NEEDED FOR KIKUYU GRASS HERE AND WHAT MATERIALS HELP?
Here is a quick list of tools and materials needed for Kikuyu grass maintenance. It is recommended that you wear all the necessary safety equipment, such as safety grass, gloves, and a mask, and follow the instructions related to product or equipment usage.
TOOLS AND MATERIALS
Coring lawn aerator
Garden hose
Handheld fertiliser spreader
Lawn mower
Pressure sprayer kit
Scarifier
Soil spreader
Sprinkler barrel
Weed puller
MATERIALS
Herbicide
Insect killer
Liquid fertiliser
Slow-release lawn fertiliser
Top dress mix
Weed kill
STEPS RELATED TO CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF KIKUYU GRASS
As mentioned above, the steps related to the care and maintenance of Kikuyu grass are very simple, and some standard steps are needed, just as we see in the case of buffalo grass. Let us understand some common steps here in this segment.
MOWING-RELATED STEPS
Kikuyu grass loves mowing and you should consider it a rule to mow at least once every week. The reason is that this will encourage new growth and regular mowing will result in a thicker and a more luxurious looking lawn. You can use a high-power cordless or petrol lawn mower and mow to the height of 20 to 25 millimetres.
WATERING-RELATED GUIDELINES
You must water Kikuyu grass thrice daily when the lawn is in its infancy stage. This frequent watering will help develop a robust and solid root system, and as a result, you will get drought-tolerant Kikuyu grass. Once established, you can cut down the watering frequency to once every week. However, if you notice that your Kikuyu last is turning brown, this means it requires more water, and you will have to increase your watering frequency. Experts recommend watering deeply in the morning to maximise water’s efficiency and to allow enough time for the soil to soak up the water.
FERTILISER APPLICATION RELATED TIPS
Just like buffalo grass, some significant factors related to fertiliser application must be kept in mind to keep your lawn lush and vibrant. You should always pick granular lawn fertiliser that has a perfect mix of macro and micronutrients. Kikuyu grass needs fertiliser application 3 to 4 times yearly, preferably during summer and autumn.
The chosen fertiliser should have a high nitrogen content, as this will lead to excessive leaf growth. You can consider using a fertiliser with adequate iron content to achieve a bright green colour.
WEED AND PEST CONTROL
Weed and pest attacks are very common on all types of grasses, but the good thing is that keeping Kikuyu grass vibrant and pest-free is very easy, just with a few simple steps. Tackling weeds is easily possible by pulling them off manually or with a weed puller. Some herbicides are very effective on broad-leaf weeds; you need to check the label for their effectiveness. The most common pest found in Kikuyu grass is grubs, and you will have to apply pesticides or insecticides to remove them and prevent new infestations.
AERATING KIKUYU GRASS LAWN
Timely aeration is critical to keeping the Kikuyu grass perfect all the time. This aeration should be done in the summer or spring season when the grass is growing strong. This way, it will bounce back quickly, but be sure to check on your local climate, weather, and soil conditions. Aeration can be done very quickly after the rainy season, and you can go for it once or twice a year for healthy growth.
DETHATCHING
Dethatching becomes important when Kikuyu grass starts showing some signs of wear and tear. This dethatching basically starts by mowing the grass and preparing it for dethatching. Then, you will need a dethatching rake or a machine to remove dead grass or debris. Once finished, make sure that you dispose of everything properly as per your local council guidelines.
