The Bunion Derby was an eighty-four-day, 3,400-mile race, all on foot from Los Angeles to New York City. The 199 participants included five African Americans, a Jamaican-born Canadian, and perhaps as many as fifteen Latinos, Native Americans, and Pacific Islanders, representing about ten percent of the competitors, the rest were white.

The men traveled Route 66 to Chicago and other roads leading to Madison Square Garden.

It was quite risky for African Americans. The men had to travel through the segregated South which had deep-rooted Jim Crow laws. Most whites at that time believed African Americans had no business participating in anything alongside whites.

By the time the derby reached eastern New Mexico, only ninety-six of the original 199 starters remained in the race. Three of the five African American starters including Eddie Gardner of Seattle, Sammy Robinson of Atlantic City, New Jersey, Toby Joseph Cotton, Jr., of Los Angeles–and Afro-Canadian Phillip Granville, of Hamilton. The men had overcome difficult times on the road, none compared to the hellish times of Texas. Route 66 took them straight to Texas where the Ku Klux Klan dominated the state legislature and the city governments of Dallas, Forth Worth, and El Paso.

The men were forced to sleep in a “colored only” tent received death threats and were taunted with racial slurs. The white mob gathered and some rode behind the African American runners, daring them to pass a white man.

As the race continued across the southern states, so did the racism and brutal attacks. The African American communities that knew what was taking place banded together to help the men along the way. They raised money to provide them with a place to sleep and food while passing through. The African American men had the support and protection from the white runners who had bonded with them like brothers.

On May 26, 1928, the fifty-five remaining men of the race made their final lap around the track in Madison Square Garden. Three of the top ten finishers were runners of color, including the $25,000 first prize winner, Andy Payne, a part Cherokee Indian from Oklahoma. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Week 0: Overview and Initial Thoughts

Hello! My name is Satwika and I will be sharing my experiences from South Africa with everyone for the next couple of months. More specifically, I am in Hermanus which is a coastal town about 1.5 hours from Cape Town. I will be doing research at SANSA, the South African National Space Agency, and completing a project under a mentor. There is also another student from UofM doing research, Aminata, who will probably show up in my blog often. I am excited to explore the city while also participating in interesting space weather research!

Arriving in Cape Town

I had a direct flight from New Jersey to Cape Town with Aminata which was about 14.5 hours so I was extremely exhausted when we arrived. Luckily, both of our bags came quickly and SANSA had a driver waiting for us so the journey from Cape Town to Hermanus was very smooth. The first thing I noticed after arriving was that it was completely dark outside. This was surprising at first since it was only around 6pm, but then I remembered that we were in the Southern Hemisphere  and it was autumn/beginning of winter. While the sun sets around 8:30 pm in the US it sets at 5:30 pm in South Africa. The next thing that intrigued me the most was that it was not very cold outside. Although it was around the end of autumn, the weather was still fairly warm when I stepped outside - I didn’t even need a jacket. Of course I packed knowing the general weather in Hermanus but it was still interesting that this was their winter. Considering Michigan winters are ruthless it is nice to know that I won’t be freezing while I’m here until July. 

Initial Thoughts about Hermanus

Honestly, Hermanus is a lot different than what I expected. Last year, I did a study abroad program in Sorrento which is a small beach town near Naples. Since it was a small town, the grocery stores weren’t as big as in the US and there were a lot of things I couldn’t get at all (still had an amazing time!). Furthermore, we walked everywhere since it was mostly cobblestone and the roads were too narrow for regular sized cars (most people drove vespas). When I heard that Hermanus was a coastal town as well, I expected something similar to Sorrento but it is much different. There are shopping malls, movie theaters (that play american movies), car dealerships, various cuisines/restaurants, etc. I honestly think that living in Hermanus will not be very different from living in the US. I even found an Indian restaurant nearby so if I am feeling homesick I can easily go eat there. 

Goals

While I am in Hermanus I want to learn more about space weather through research while also immersing myself in South African culture. By the end of the program, I hope to have presentable results to show for all the work I did. I also want to learn a lot from Zama, who is going to be my mentor at Zama. As for the culture aspect, I would definitely like to try many different South African foods including bunny chow and melkterts. Furthermore I hope to befriend the other students who are staying at SANSA (most of whom are South African) and better understand their background, traditions, and thoughts on America! I am so excited to have this opportunity and share everything here :) I don't have many pictures yet but here are some initial ones from the plane and near SANSA.

The distance from Lake Kariba to Harare is some 370 km. The first 78 km we drove on a good road winding through a hilly area in wide curves up and down towards the A1 which is the major connection between Lusaka and Harare the capital of Zimbabwe. Bruno already warned us that as soon as we would turn on the A1 the situation would change to a road full of potholes, trucks and construction work. It turned out exactly as outlined and our average speed dropped considerably. Some of these holes were really nasty and if we could not avoid them because they spread across the whole width of the road we had to jump on the brakes to roll through as slow as possible. The road also broke of left and right in a steep decline so that turning on the gravel shoulder wasn’t an option. One of our 4x4s punctured two wheels and dented two rims at the same time when driving too fast into a deep pothole.

All these obstacles lead to a 7 hour drive with a lunch stop at „The Lion’s Den“ where excellent burgers were served with no waiting time at all. The second half after the break was much better but still we had to drive „Indian Style“ in order not to loose too much time.

We arrived in Harare around 15:30, got the car washed had two very crispy tacos at a food truck at the gas station. A lady started talking to us in excellent English. It turned out that she studied in Dallas and now served the „best“ tacos in town. Her name was „Sonia“ and she was ready to jump into the car to join us. After a lot of laughs we drove to „Highland House“ our lodge for the night.

The temperatures were very pleasant the whole day. Much cooler and a „tad bit nippy“ in the evening as Michael our rally friend from Jersey called it. Harare lies at an altitude of 1500 meters. When we came into the outskirts we had the impression of a rough city where the well to be hide in large compounds fenced off with long and high walls and barbed wire on top. Our hotel was in a suburb in an area where all the embassies were located. Streets got nicer, cleaner and everything was well kept.

After the usual „buffet“ dinner we went to bed early. Tomorrow we shall head to Mozambik.

The Wonder Of It All

The way we dine out—or in, as it turns out—continues to change before our very eyes. Third-party delivery is an industry now. We have evolved from boring, bland food courts at the shopping mall, which are primarily populated by miniature versions of the same brands we find along city streets, to food halls, where mom-and-pops occupy stalls among shared kitchen facilities.

Ghost kitchens have also become common, with established brands running secondary brands out of the same facility, as well as those owned by DoorDash that welcome mom-and-pops, along with corporately-owned ones like Inspire Brands’ kitchen in Atlanta with Arby’s, Sonic, and all of their other brands. It’s all about delivery.

And then there’s yet another wrinkle, this one from Wonder and its 30 proprietary brands all created under one roof, and ready for pickup or delivery. Wonder just raised $700 million in capital to fund a rapid expansion. The company had started with food trucks trying to deliver the same concept to wherever they could find a place to park, but has now opted to go with brick-and-mortar locations. With 10 units now in New York and New Jersey, and one inside a Pennsylvania Walmart, the company plans to have 90 food halls by the end of 2025.

And it’s a great idea. Some 90% of orders are made online at their current kitchens. But perhaps more impressive is the fact that the smoke and mirrors they have created to shroud the fact that they own all of the brands attests to the veracity of the concept.The diversity of offerings is impressive, from American comfort food and burgers, to Asian, Mexican, Indian, salads, and more.

Oh, and all from the same commercial kitchen. That’s no small task, and to be able to pull it off without accidentally putting the wrong food into a bag or box labeled for one of the other brands they offer, means that they probably ought to stick to just using Wonder as the umbrella for it all. One name, no problem.

The concept addresses multiple needs and desires. Top of the list, of course, is convenience. Busy American households don’t have as much time to cook as they would like, especially after a long day at the office and a tedious commute home.

And there’s the beauty of everyone in on the order can pick whatever they want, with no one bound to pizza or any other stand-alone food genre. You want Indian street food? Fine. And I’ll have Pad Thai.

Lastly, it builds on the food hall concept, that it is free of the big brands we see everywhere. It is no secret that fast food has been struggling a bit of late as dietary preferences continue to expand.

To be fair, Wonder is not the first to try this. Two other companies have tried in the last few years, and not fared well. One of them even partnered with Kroger to allow for pickup as well as delivery. Some fine-tuning is in order here, and perhaps Wonder can make it work. The Walmart unit reflects the giant retailer’s shift away from Subway and McDonald’s leasing space inside, and if the one unit thus far is successful, look for more in other Walmarts.

I like this idea a lot, perhaps because I do love me a good food hall in the first place. The people with whom I am most likely to dine don’t like fast food, and prefer more esoteric categories of food. Being able to choose from among multiple options is golden.

To be perfectly honest, I have made myself hungry while writing this. While I don’t have the option of something like Wonder out here on the High Plains, I can at least whip up something tasty and healthy, and not otherwise available at a diner or fast food joint.

And that is pretty much the Wonder business plan in a nutshell. Evolution is a very good thing. Bon appétit, y’all!

THINGS TO NOTICE ABOUT MARIUS !

WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE . marius stands on the shorter side at 5'7" & isn't a very physically intimidating person. however, his attitude can certainly add a threatening factor to him, as well as his skill in sleight of hand & manipulation, which can make others who are aware of these skills wary of him. he has a heart - shaped face, dark brown eyes, short brown hair, & is most often seen wearing some sort of scowl or foul expression, another reason other people tend to avoid him. he also shaves frequently, disliking the feeling of facial hair. he's around 155 lbs with little muscle, as he doesn't work out, & his thin build is quite easy to spot. marius is most often seen in collared, button - up shirts, which somewhat dress him up & are just enough to imply he cares about his appearance, at least a little bit. he will, occasionally, wear a simple dark crewneck, but he almost always layers this with a collared jacket -- or, most often, his plethora of trench coats. he leans closest to mild or dark tones, including brown, navy, gray, black, & sometimes light blue ( for dressier attire ). marius is a blue jean - wearer at heart & usually wears brown or black vintage boots. he isn't one to wear accessories or jewelry, not even watches. his skin is tanned & is accustomed to the sun, considering how often he gets out, as marius is not a homebody.

WHAT THEY SMELL LIKE . considering how little marius actually cares about his appearance, at least, if he isn't trying to put on a persona, he's more apt to purchase cheaper shampoos and soaps. he detests the smell of mint / herbs / flowers ( another reason he hates so many vegas casinos ) so stays far away from them, instead sticking to scents such as sandalwood & vanilla, sometimes amber as well. he often has a woody & warm scent to him, & can sometimes carry the smell of whatever casino(s) he's been in, lingering cigarette smoke & citruses, sometimes even rum if he's been drinking.

WHAT THEY TASTE LIKE . marius uses spearmint toothpaste, which is the most mild mint he's ever been able to stand, giving him a very soft menthol taste. he smokes occasionally, though never actually buys a pack of his own -- meaning he tastes like an array of types, usually marlboro gold, even sometimes marlboro red if he's feeling up to its strength. this undertone can also be paired with whatever food he's eaten, which most often ranges from asian food, indian food, greasy sausage pizza, & sometimes milk chocolate if he's willing to indulge. he doesn't drink soda, only water, so never has any kind of specific taste there. he'd only ever have a sugary taste concerning drinks, as he likes rum the most.

WHAT THEY SOUND LIKE . his most notable verbal trait is his northern new jersey accent, which isn't intensely thick but it's noticeable to anyone who meets him; sometimes it can even be mistaken for a new york city accent. it becomes more obvious when marius is annoyed or upset, spilling through in a heavier quality. his voice isn't very deep, a little more on the average to higher side, and can crack and break when he's angry, as his voice tends to rise to a higher pitch in these situations. generally, however, marius' tone is calm and level, though he has a hard time keeping his constant irritability from slipping in. as insanely impatient as he is, marius speaks quickly but not too fast as to lose people in his voice's tracks, though it wouldn't be surprising if any non - new york or new jersey native wouldn't understand what he was saying, leading to rolled eyes and even more impatient snaps, irritated that his words weren't understood or heard immediately. he doesn't frequently curse but he doesn't keep it to intense situations or emotions, either; they come out every so often, & it's not shocking for him to drop some kind of profanity -- quick with words like “fuck,” “shit,” & “asshole,” which he specifically likes to call people he doesn't like. marius is a confident speaker but isn't much of a jokester, even with those he's comfortable being around & loves. he can be quite sarcastic, though, which is most often sharp & biting.

WHAT THEY FEEL LIKE . physically, marius is smooth & soft - skinned, despite his tendency to skip moisturizing as he often sees it as a waste of time. he always has clean hands & occasionally has callouses and cuts on his fingers from repeatedly shuffling cards and practicing cardistry, which has become a sort of stim for him. his face has no stubble, as he shaves frequently, & his hair is soft if touched & not all that thick. marius sometimes sports blisters on his heels from his boots, especially if they're new on him. emotionally, marius is not a very friendly person & this can often be easily felt by anyone aware enough, unless he's actively shielding that part of himself -- & even then, his annoyance still slips through the cracks, evident in his demeanor, expressions, & gestures. he has a colder feel to him & is generally unfriendly enough to notice immediately, his smiles fake unless he's truly close to someone, but he becomes more warm when he likes someone & his chilly exterior finally begins to slough off as time passes with those he loves and respects.

Hi everyone! Welcome back. I am super excited to share what I have been up to these past two weeks. We had both weeks off for Easter vacation, which was amazing. I hope you are all welcoming spring and enjoying the month so far!

The first week of spring break, I headed to London to meet a friend to start our vacation. Despite some delays, I made it and we went to bed, to get ready for our first day. The first day, we did a walking tour which ended up being about four hours long… crazy but so fun. We saw all the main sites, and even got the most DELICIOUS sandwiches for lunch.

Afterwards, we headed to Trafalgar theater to see the play, Jersey Boys. It was amazing!! We then met up with another friend of mine who is abroad in London for some food and just to hang out.

 The next day, we headed to Portobello Market and Notting Hill, where we saw the colorful buildings and the cutest market.

We went to Covent Garden to get lunch, which had to be fish and chips, and then we followed it up with the Tower Bridge and some afternoon tea. We had to catch an overnight bus so we headed back to the hostel to get our bags and we went to the bus station.

Spending the night on the bus was definitely interesting, but in no time we were in Scotland! We got to Edinburgh around 9am, where we got settled and did another tour. We saw such beautiful buildings, and the castle on the hill was absolutely incredible.

We finished this off with more fish and chips… which were even better than London!

After a quick nap, we went to Calton Hill to see the sunset and we ended up seeing the best views. So many people were out sitting on the hill and it was so beautiful.

We got a late “dinner” which was actually just desserts and they were amazing. Our favorite had to be the Lotus milk cake, which was essentially cake soaked in sweetened milk and cookie butter… it was the best.

The next day, we got some brunch, I got buffalo chicken loaded fries (my first buffalo flavored dish since I’ve been in Europe) and an iced latte. I will say the UK makes some mean iced lattes! They’re a bit hard to come by outside the US I have noticed.

We walked around some more, before grabbing more coffee once it began to rain. Once it cleared up, we took a bus to the coast where we explored more and walked around looking at the water. When we got back, we sat down to eat dinner at an Indian restaurant, which was so so good. I had chicken tikka masala and my friend got the butter chicken.

I had to wake up early the next day to head to Dublin (we had separate flights because my friend needed to bring some extra luggage). When I got there, I grabbed some food at a café, before I explored the Temple Bar District, and got a burrito for dinner.

I headed back to our hotel to nap, which was much needed after the early morning. By the time my friend got there, it was late so we went to bed and woke up the next day ready for our next tour. We learned a lot about Irish history and the city itself, as well as where to get a classic chicken filet sandwich. We headed to a deli to get these, and as simple as they sound they were pretty good! After walking around some more and getting coffee, we met up with some mutual friends for dinner to get tapas.

Our last day, we took a train to Howth where we hiked and explored the incredible views.

It was a cute seaside village and there were so many people out and about. The cliffs were some of the coolest things I have ever seen and of course… we finished off our trip with fish and chips. There was a little stand in Howth which was very traditional (we learned fish and chips were meant to be eaten as take out) and super popular. They might’ve been my favorite of the whole trip!

I headed back to Brussels that next morning and stayed for a few days before I left for another few days. I would say that overall, London was my favorite city on the trip, it just had the best vibe and so much to do. I also loved how beautiful Edinburgh was and Dublin had great energy! It was an incredible trip that I am so lucky to have done and I am so happy to have seen so much. I will talk about the rest of break so soon but I will leave you with this! Far from Doha’s luxury hotels and sprawling new World Cup stadiums, scores of South Asian workers poured into a cricket ground in the city’s sandy outskirts to enjoy the tournament they helped create.   Unlike the official FIFA fan zone near Doha’s pristine corniche, this one has no $14 beer or foreign tourists.
