Oooohh, I've actually written a fic with this as a plot point! Well, partially, it's incomplete. It's called Vorago, on my AO3, but fair warning, I was rereading it, and my writing has evolved a bit since then, so... there's some more cringe wording choices.

In this fic, their mother, her name is Astraea. She's about the same height as them, blue eyes, and blonde hair. She disappeared when Meliodas was, eh, about the equivalent of a pre teen, Estarossa was a young boy, and Zeldris was a toddler. No one had any idea where they went, so Meliodas took up care of his brothers.

Do you know the Prisoners of the Sky movie? In it, there's a big ugly beast of an Indura. This, the Indura of Retribution.

We see that normal demons can turn Indura with Derieri and Monspeet.

So my theory was that the indura on the Celestial's island? Is their MOTHER. The Demon King, having no more use for her after his second heir (Zeldris) was born, and getting impatient with how her affection for her sons made them "soft" decided to just... get rid of her. But by forcing/tricking her into turning Indura by placing her in an illusion where her sons died, he could send her rampaging and dole out a good amount of damage in the process.

She'd been trapped as an Indura so long that her mind and body deteriorated and became more and more monstrous as time went on, until... well, there she is.

Could go one of two routes. In my fic, the three manage to revert her, and are stunned because "YOU MEAN THAT GIANT HULKING THING WAS OUR M O T H E R DEEP DOWN"

OR

You could have them destroy her. And not realize just who she was until later. Or maybe not at all.

They destroy her, and the tattered remains of her soul just barely manage to manifest as a distorted, glitchy version of her, that whisper a relieved "Thank you" before fading away for good, leaving the three in shock as they realize what they just did.
