Hi, this is Dr., Cris Vieira, Medical Director of INDY VITAL. Today I like to share some medical wisdom I had acquired during my 25 years practicing medicine. Several years ago, in 2005, I went to The BODY EXPO, showcasing human bodies that have been preserved through a process called plastination and dissected to display bodily systems. This fantastic exhibit displed internal organs and organic systems. The exhibition was the best anatomy class I ever attended. That's when I met the VASCULAR MAN, in the image I am sharing in this post. The VASCULAR MAN shows every major and also small tiny arteries that take oxygen and nutrients to our entire bodies. Until then, I did not fully understand the impact that diseases such as Diabetes and Hypertension may have in our whole body. In this case, the saying "a picture is worth a thousand words" is in fact, true. The VASCULAR MAN finally made me understand a concept called target organ damage. This means that when Diabetes and Hypertension had damaged one area in the body, for example, the kidneys, the likelihood that other vascular areas such as the heart and brain are also damaged is very high. Why would Diabetes and Hypertension choose to destroy only the blood vessels of the kidney? No, that does not happen. When the kidneys are in trouble, the other organs are also failing or are going to fail due to the same illness. At INDY VITAL we use hyperbaric oxygen therapy that produces a phenomenon called angiogenesis. Angiogenesis is the scientific name for the formation of new blood vessels. This is why when someone suffers a stroke, hyperbaric oxygen helps. The fact is that one should be vigilant and try to prevent damage to our vascular system before a stroke happens. Exercise, eating a balanced Mediterranean like diet and avoidance of tobacco, all help our arteries stay in good shape. Is anything ever really "finished" :)? Re-revisited my Butterfly design and decided to go with a look closer to the original but at the same time a bit more refined and functional. Originally published in 1971, Skywald's The Butterfly was the first African-American superheroine in American comics.
