Segun Arinze: How I got my stage name
Tumblr media
Segun Arinze, the ace Nigerian actor, has revealed how he got his stage name.
The film star, born Segun Aina, said he was given the stage name ‘Segun Arinze’ in 1991 while pursuing a music career.
“I was also singing. In 1991, I was told someone wanted to sign me. ‘We are going to sign you on’. He came from Sony Music. So he called me and I signed the contract. He signed. And then he said ‘Okay we are going to start recording’,” he said in a recent chat with Biola Bayo on the ‘TalktoB’ podcast.
“Went to Ife to do Dramatic Arts. My dad did not like the idea because he wanted me to be a lawyer. At a point in time, I thought he was not going to pay my school fees to go and read drama.
“Then the National Theatre was running an open theatre then… ‘welcome new artiste Segun Arinze’. I said ‘excuse me sir what is this? I said why are you changing my name? The album came out – ‘Dreams’. Everywhere was ‘Segun Arinze, Segun Arinze. That was how the name got changed from Segun Aina to Segun Arinze in a nutshell”.
The 58-year-old movie star also revealed how he ventured into the voice-over industry.
Arinze said he was introduced to voice acting by Soni Irabor, the ace radio broadcaster. He also said he was paid N1,000 for his first voice-over in 1987.
“Soni Irabor walks in someday and he was looking for voice-over artiste. There was nobody around that day then he heard me speak,” he said.
“Then he said ‘You can do the voice’ Really? I cannot, he said ‘Yes, you can and I will see what you do’. And I did the voice-over. He paid me N1000. That was 1987. N1000 for just doing (voice-over). I said this is big. Coloured TV was N500 at that time.”
Arinze is currently the president of the Association of Voice-Over Artistes in Nigeria.

I’m leaving military stronger than I met it -Irabor
Tumblr media
The immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor (retd), has said he is leaving the military more capable of tackling adversaries than he met it. This is as he admitted that the task wasn’t easy due to the large and diverse nature of the country. Irabor spoke at the pulling-out ceremony held in his honour on Friday in Abuja. He said, “National security for a large and diverse country like Nigeria is not an easy task, but it is also not an impossible one. In 2021, the security situation of the nation was admittedly in a state of dynamic plus. Efforts made by the federal government of Nigeria using the AFN in collaboration with the NPF, other security agencies, and critical stakeholders were in different stages of gestation. We were encouraged to pursue these measures in addition to other initiatives to reinvigorate the national security architecture to deliver critical national security functions. “I make bold to say that I’m leaving the armed forces of Nigeria today, bigger, stronger, and more capable to deliver on its constitutional mandate and national security functions. ” Irabor said, “In more specific terms, we have significantly curtailed the threats of terrorism, insurgency, piracy, sea robberies, vandalism of critical national assets and kidnappings, and military aid to civil authority. We successfully work in conjunction with other security agencies and stakeholders to deliver a physical security environment that is amenable for Law and Order, critical democratic processes, as well as human security and national development.” He urged the citizens to be proud of the military and refrain from denigrating the service, adding that the military stood as a beacon of hope for the country. Irabor said, “Without doubt, the nation should be proud of its military, to whom too many security concerns seem to now be consigned. I therefore state with a sense of responsibility but as a nation, we should avoid the deliberate or inadvertent inclination to denigrate the contributions of the armed forces to national security, unity, and stability. Our military stands as a beacon of hope, strength, and resilience in an increasingly complex world.” Read the full article
