Why did they pick their first class/job? What about the job they main now?

So this is a bit of a hard answer, largely because I came from SWTOR first where your character was defined by what job you had, and the story that came with it (Jedi consular my beloved), and I’ve unintentionally stuck with that idea for most of my characters. That being said, let’s dig into it!

Shining was born to a pair of witches in the village of Ala Ridia in northern Gyr Abania. She was conceived during a ritual, and as a result has extremely powerful innate magical skill. She learned to cast fire spells before she could speak, and was a fully fledged mage before she was fourteen due to her mothers’ tutelage. Magic has never been a challenge to her, and she’s the sort of person that strives to better herself with skill and learning.

Her da showed her the basics of swordplay before she left her village, as well as how to hunt and fire a bow, and she was hooked ever since. Learning a completely new discipline excited her, and she takes great pride in her skills as both a swordswoman and an archer.

As she became older however, she learned to weave her magical powers into her chosen disciplines -- with some help from the Paladin and Bard soul stones. Her paladin powers are much more “holy knight” a la Final Fantasy Tactics, like Agrias or Meliadoul. Her Bard abilities are augmented slightly by her heritage, as her village has something known as “The Song of the Ancestors”, where she is able to bring a chorus of her ancestor’s voices to buff/sing as needed.

Nive’s mother, Una, was a Astrologian from an extremely long line of practitioners, dating back to the second astral era. Due to this even the “weakest” of her clan can preform a divination and can draw on the power of the stars. Nive accurately predicted the future before she was eight years old, and seemed to simply know things by looking up at the stars and moon as a child. Her training was starting in earnest when the Wood Wailers attacked her clan, leaving her the only survivor. As such she knows very little about her heritage and powers, and avoided them for a very long time. It wasn’t until she journeyed to Ishgard and spoke with Leveva that she was able to start to get a handle on her powers.

Due to the attack however, Nive abandoned what magic she knew and sought to learn something different. Conjury was out of the question due to Gridania’s racism against Keepers, and she had no desire to travel to Ul’dah to learn thamaturgey. Arcanima interested her because it followed logical theorems and geometry, and it didn’t rely on any sort of fiddly “feelings” about which way the stars shined above.

After she fought and defeated Ifrit, Y’mhitra sought her out to potentially revive the art of Summoning. The two women ended up working extremely closely together as they realized they didn’t have to just research but reinvent the art, as there were too many things lost to time and the world had changed too much since Allag. As such Nive takes extreme pride in being a Summoner because she was one of the people who brought it back from extinction.

Helisent hails from a long line of weather witches in Gyr Abania, who were primarily tasked with keeping the lightning storms under control/ensuring that drought wasn’t a problem for the scant farmland around the Lochs. When her mother, Irga, fled the fall of Ala Mhigo to Gridania, she forswore all Gyr Abanian witch practices to ensure that she and her daughter wouldn’t be rejected by the Twelveswood. Regardless, Helisent still showed a natural aptitude for conjury at a young age, and learned how to heal and wield the elements easily.

After she and Nive fought a Primal Garuda shortly after the Calamity, Helisent was winds-touched and threw all her other elements out of wack. During this period she found a white mage’s soul stone and learned to balance out her abilities somewhat, but she’ll always be wind aspected.

Helisent always had an interest in her Ala Mhigan heritage, and it wasn’t until “Yda” spoke of the Fists of Rhalgr that Hel really started to look into it. A few chance meetings with Widergelt here and there, and reuniting with Lyse in Stormblood led to her eventually training as a Monk. While she’ll always have her conjury, she’s a bit worried what might happen if she’s ever caught in a situation where she doesn’t have her staff, or that there’s a deficit of wind-aether that causes her to wither. Learning to use her fists ensured that she was never without a weapon, and it helped her feel closer to the heritage that she was cut off from. Due to her wind powers though, she’s extremely quick, but quite fragile when it comes to actual combat.
