Forced OS “upgrading”...
Those who know me know that I’m essentially a Luddite. If there is an older piece of tech that is still doing its thing without me needing anything further, I’ll keep it. I have a stable of four Macs: Three from Mid-2012 (Tower, MacBook Pro 13″, MacBook Pro 15″) and one from 2010 (MacBook Air 11″).
I’m still happily running El Capitan (10.11.6). I have begun to see the next “tech dividing line” I will have to cross, and no this one isn’t hardware-age-related!
My three Mid-2012 Machines are all capable of running 10.13, otherwise known as “High Sierra”. That seems to be the new “last old Mac OS” you can use before they force you to get new hardware.
So, I know how Apple issued one version of the OS and usually did a “Fine Tuning” of the OS after that with the next version. Example, “El Capitan” is the “Fine Tuning” of “Yosemite”.
Then the Sierra/High Sierra analogy should apply. ie: no real reason to go to Sierra in between, just jump to High Sierra from El Cap. i know it’s gonna be a difficult thing to do, but in order to stay at least semi-connected I have to upgrade the OS.
The first sign, was the CalWin website suddenly giving me “You’re using an unsupported browser” after three years of saying my Firefox was just fine. I am using
Evidently, the above is now an ancient archaeological relic, and isn’t even recognized as Firefox, which is probably up past 100 now...I haven’t looke..
There was a dividing line in Thunderbird, too, and now TUMBLR ITSELF is telling me my browser is not supported! In order to jump the chasm that divides MY firefox from NextFireFox is I gotta upgrade OS. Period. So if shit’s gonna break, I may as well go big with it.
My computer life has been tranquil for a long time as a result of me knowing how to wring every last possible drop of useability out of a set of very faithful and personally oriented machines.
Upgrading OS is gonna suck, but at least I can keep going for a while longer with my machines. That’s important. I got nothin’ past these old babies. And they work flawlessly, and always have. All of ‘em. Ten full years after they were made.
I know with High Sierra I have to make the leap with the change in file system. I am not real thrilled about that. I have all manner of hardwire RAID backup boxes that use USB and eSata and other on-board drives to consider here.
Now, the two main laptops (the 13 & 15) can actually run up to and including Mojave and Catalina. The tower has to stay at High Sierra, until I can get a Metal GPU, which ain’t gonna happen. SO...the ability to use the machines seamlessly is key here.
And it has to interface with my keyboard controller that runs Ableton Live 10. I have to be able to record and edit on the tower and the 15″ laptop at the very least. I don’t wanna break shit between the tower and the laptops. It is essential they all be tuned to each other the way I have them now.
That’s why the OS choice is tricky at this point! The last time an upgrade was so fraught with peril was the divide between the PowerPC and Intel Macs! And something we all should keep in mind when things like this go...awry: Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke!
I will report back on the issue after further cogitation.

The Right to Repair is a Libertarian Argument
Recently there has been a lot of discussion and news surrounding the concept known as “right to repair.”
Fundamentally what it means is that I have purchased a product and I have the right to repair my device as well as have access to the parts and knowledge to be able to perform such actions. It’s actually not a new concept as we originally fought for “right to repair” in the beginning of the PC era.
Years ago when you bought a PC, you weren’t allowed to repair the computer, upgrade it, or anything else unless the manufacturer or an authorized third party performed it. So essentially what “right to repair” means is that when I purchase a product; whether it be an automobile, a cell phone, a PC, or anything else that if it breaks I should have the ability to get it repaired either through the manufacturer, third parties, or the ability to attain the tools, knowledge, and components to perform the repair myself.
In fact, if it were not for “right to repair”, my current job at Accunet, where I perform managed service plans for IT, to maintain business networks, wouldn’t exist; nor would many automotive garages, or even cell phone repair stores.
I am a huge “do it yourself” person. I repair my own PCs, I do a lot of my own maintenance on my cars, I even repair my own phones and tablet computers whenever possible. In fact, I used to work in a cell phone repair shop, Code Red Wireless, here in central Ohio, and I used to repair hundreds of Apple devices.
I am that guy when most things break that are electronic they call me up, stop by my house, or shoot me a message and a picture asking for advice or if I can repair it for them. I have done everything from color changing an iPhone, to replacing capacitors on a once dead laptop to bring it back to life. I’ve been taking apart and repairing electronics for many years, since I was little kid, as I have been using a soldering iron since I was as young as seven.
It’s easy to figure out a repair. There are YouTube videos, forum posts, schematics and more, widely available, whether I need to repair my devices or even my own car.
However, there is one major hurdle that usually occurs whenever I am repairing an Apple device; whether it is a Macbook, iMac, iPhone, iPod, or iPad. That hurdle is US customs and the United States Postal Service as well as many government agencies.
Allow me to explain what is happening to me and every single third party repair shop in the USA, Canada, and the European Union.
Apple is lobbying governments around the world to stop third party repair shops by saying they are using counterfeit parts.
It’s reached such a fever pitch that Apple is suing third party stores in the USA and abroad to shut down their entire business model by seizing all of their parts at the borders when they come in.
I have had Apple Macbook trackpads, iPhone screens, buttons, phone backs, and more parts seized by customs with no way to get my money back or the parts I paid for. I’m not alone in this. A store in Norway recently had something similar happen.
Apple has lobbied governments so hard in an effort to prevent third party repairs, that seeing as it’s illegal to import counterfeit screens, many repairers are taking to removing the broken digitizer, which some refer to as the ‘glass’, off and sending them to Chinese factories who take legitimate Apple displays off the digitizer and refurbish them with new glass. Apple has even determined this to be counterfeiting and took this particular shop to court. Fortunately, the court sided with the store owner and he will get his stock back.
Apple has even been so evil in their intent to ban third party repair that they’ve actually released updates that will stop perfectly good devices that have a third party display on them.
Libertarians and conservatives will say that a business has every right to do what it pleases, which I don’t disagree with; however, once you purchase the product and it’s officially under your care and ownership, you should be allowed to do whatever you please to do with said device.
Many libertarians may respond by saying that you should read the Apple terms and conditions, where it says repairs must be done by an Apple store or an authorized Apple repair center.
However what about when you face an issue such as the one Linus Sebastian (a famous YouTuber known for “LinusTechTips”)faced, where he can’t even get Apple to repair an iMac Pro he accidentally broke and had every intention to pay for repairs for. Apple simply refused to do the repairs on a system that’s not even a year old.
Linus released an eight minute video detailing the ordeal and correspondence to give an idea of how stupid this situation is. But when you compound this with the knowledge I have, that Apple has had a horrible system design for their hardware for many years leading to many defects over the years, it begs the question, why does Apple not want me to repair my own devices?
Louis Rossman, is perhaps the single most famous third party repair shop, he has hundreds of videos discussing Apple component level repairs, and the issues with Apple devices, he is also one of the biggest advocates of course for the “right to repair.”
He released a video detailing years of Apple’s flawed designs and their response to fixing these issues.
All the issues he documents are as follows:

A1226/A1260 2007-2008 Macbook Pro hinge/frame problem
A1286 Macbook Pro – the “Unibody” myth, glued together pieces fall apart

Apple gives out badly refurbished boards as warranty replacements for 2011 GPU failures.
2012 Retina Macbook Pro: another motherboard issue (U8900), due to poor soldering/manufacturing method on the GPU buck converter.

iPhone 6/6+ touchscreen issue due to structural issue.
SSD soldered straight into the motherboard+ chip that would kill the macbook, because a power line would short out to ground when the chip dies.

I have had official Apple store repairs go wrong very often, I even had an entire motherboard die within minutes of getting my Macbook (back in 2014), when all I had them do was replace the battery as it was cheaper for them to replace it than for me to buy a new battery.
I’ve had friends give me Apple laptops they had repaired by Apple, and I saw melted plastic on connectors as if they didn’t use any shields. They even sold my friend a refurbished Macbook that had water damage from the very day he opened it and Apple refused to give him a non-water damaged replacement despite it coming that way out of the box.
Louis has documented ten years of wide spread horrible design or functionality flaws that have occurred regularly over a whole decade.
So in conclusion, libertarians and conservatives should work together to enact right to repair legislation just like we have for computers and automobiles, for cell phones and every device we can purchase. The fact is once I have purchased an item and it is in my possession, I should have an inalienable right to do whatever I please with my own property without interference from any government mandate or law passed through some corporate protectionist lobbyist.

There are a number of third-party vendors which sell graphics cards with integrated Metal support specifically designed for Mac computers. While searching for a compatible graphics card, I found that I could install Mojave on my MacBook Pro Mid 2010 model by using a software known as macOS Mojave Patcher Tool. Kudos to DosDude1 who developed tested, and released it as a free app.
By using this software, we could install the latest macOS version on early 2008 Macs.
Here is the step by step method to run Mojave on unsupported Macs.
The whole process can be divided into four parts.
Part 1. Getting all the required things
Part 2. Downloading the macOS Mojave Installer App
Part 3. Making a bootable Mojave USB drive
Part 4. Installing and Patching Mojave OS on the unsupported computer
We will discuss each part in details in the following paragraphs.
Part 1: Requirements to Run Mojave on Old Macs

Part 2: Download macOS Mojave Installer Software
MacOS Mojave software can be downloaded as an Installer App from Mac App Store using the computer which supports Mojave.
If you don’t have Mojave supported Mac, you can download the Mojave Installer App using patcher tool. Open the macOS Mojave patcher tool. If it doesn’t open and says it is from an unidentified developer, right click on the tool’s icon and click on “Open” from sub-menu and then enter your Mac’s Admin name and password. After the verification, you can open it with the left double-click.
If you don’t remember your macOS password, here are the solutions to reset it.
Go to Tools in the Menu bar and then hit “Download macOS Mojave”.
I recommend using the built-in downloader tool because it will download the latest and the compatible Installer app.
Mojave Installer app is about 5-6GB in size and it may take some time depending on the speed of your internet.
If the internet connection interrupts while downloading the file, don’t worry. The downloading process will resume where it left. Simply download the Mojave software again but point it to the same location where you were already downloading and saving the installer app.
Part 3: Create a Bootable Mojave USB Drive
In order to create a bootable Mojave USB Installer drive, follow these steps.
Step 1: Insert 16GB or above USB drive into your USB port of your Mac.
Step 2: Open Disk Utility and erase the USB drive in OS X Extended (Journaled) format. Give a proper name before erasing. I gave the name “macOS Mojave” to my USB drive.
If you are new to Mac, get the basic information about how to make a Partition, erase the current partition and how to make a bootable USB drive.
Step 3: After the drive is erased, open “macOS Mojave Patcher” tool.
Step 4: Point the Patcher tool to the downloaded Mojave Installer app which is downloaded in Part 2.
Step 5: Now select the target USB drive you just formatted.
Step 6: Hit the “Start Operation” button on the patcher tool and let it make the USB bootable with Mojave.
Step 7: It will show “Complete” when the process is done.
Part 4: Installing and Patching macOS Mojave
In this fourth and final part, we will install and patch the macOS Mojave on our old Mac computer. Follow the steps below to complete the remaining procedure.
Step 1. Restart your computer and hold down the “Option” key as soon as the Mac starts up.
Step 2: Select the USB drive, which was named as “macOS Mojave” as the startup disk.
Step 3: If you want to upgrade your current macOS to macOS Mojave, simply use the continue button to proceed and follow step 5. But if you want to install it on another partition or want to erase the current partition first, then follow the Step 4.
Step 4: Open Disk Utility from the bottom left panel.
Select the volume you want to erase. Use Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. Or if you have got late-2009 and later machines with SSD drives, you can also use APFS format.
If you don’t want to install Mojave on current volume, you can also create a new partition and install it there. Mojave takes approximately 18GB space on hard drive. So at least make a 25GB partition to test the new macOS.
If you want to use it for all routine work, set the partition size according to your needs.
Step 5: Select the volume and press “Continue” to begin the installation process.
Step 6: The installation process takes about 20 minutes to complete. When it is done, reboot your Mac back into installer drive while holding down the “Option” key again.
Step 7: This time select “macOS Post Install” app from the bottom left panel.
Step 8: Select the model of your computer and the volume on which you installed Mojave and then click the “Patch” button. The tool will automatically select the required patches according to the model of your computer.
Step 9: Press the “Reboot” button when the patch is complete.

Set an external eGPU-connected display as the primary display
If you have an external display connected to your eGPU, you can choose it as the primary display for all apps. Since apps default to the GPU associated with the primary display, this option works with a variety of apps:
Quit any open apps that you want the eGPU to accelerate on the primary display.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences. Select Displays, then select the Arrangement tab.
Drag the white menu bar to the box that represents the display that's attached to the eGPU.
Open the apps that you want to use with the eGPU.
If you disconnect the eGPU, your Mac defaults back to the internal graphics processors that drives the built-in display. When the eGPU is re-attached, it automatically sets the external display as the primary display.
