completely disregarding how condescending this reads its cause its infantilizing as FUCK !!!!!! i just cant take anyone who unironically calls me an “enby” seriously because i feel like im being talked down to!!!! i wouldnt care NEARLY as much if
a) i didn’t have trauma i cant talk about specifically tied to the word, and
b) nonbinary people aren’t infantilized as much as they are.
unfortunately a lot of people who claim to be “supportive” of nonbinary people treat it as “let them figure themselves out” as if nonbinary is a temporary or immature identity. it feels like youre looking me in the face and calling me “kid”!! i hate that!!!!!
now to review what the jury says
nb:
the non-black argument above unfortunately applies to this term specifically.
“nb” has an ambiguous pronunciation . inevitably if you try to say it, it still sounds like “enby” which traces back to issue #0 :(
let’s say you had a romantic partner; “nbfriend” is a little clunky . . i dont like it at all . do you abbreviate it to nbf? nf?
verdict: simple but impractical . i could use it in a casual context but not on say, a character profile, but i wouldn’t anyway because of the non-black thing
bee:
cute in isolation because im gonna be honest with you all i have a bee special interest. you just managed to hit the sweet spot (sic) by pure luck
however ... it also sort of isolates my least favorite part of the word “enby” .
“beefriend” is very cute albeit trying to abbreviate it is difficult. calling someone your “beef” is extremely funny though
verdict: cute but not for me .. i can see it as a replacer for boy/girl but not man/woman (but we don’t need one term to apply to both !! im just saying)
ranking these independently:
enb:
i was considering this last night .. chopping off that bastardly -y sound . i like it! i can get behind that.
there’s a bit of a “vocal speedbump” though, at least in my accent. there’s no real way to enunciate “enb” without making it almost like two syllables (en-buh) because of the way N flows into B. i’m completely fine with spelling it as enb and making the b silent, though.
enbfriend/enfriend is cute .. i can abbreviate it to nf really easily and in context it would be pretty !recognizable!
verdict: very cute!!!! i can see it as a stand-in for boy/girl but because it’s sort of a step up from “enby”, not man/woman. can be a replacer for boyfriend/girlfriend. i could use this and itd be practical!
nyb
nibe? nib? might get confusing but our language sucks
nybfriend is cute. also abbreviates to nf.
being called a “nib” is kind of weird to be used on me personally but i would be fine using it on other people . “nibe” is almost fantasy like though. i love that
verdict: all-around good .. nice .. i can use this !! though if i used “nyb” to refer to a nonbinary person i worry people are gonna think i’m talking about a specific identity rather than nonbinary people in general.
neu:
god i dont have much to say on this its just good
verdict: good i would use this . neufriend is very cute in a good way
terms included in this instagram post (enben, exen, quixen, gequen, ixen, mixen, nixen, enber, et cetera):
i could name santa’s backup reindeer after these which is like already an extremely good qualifier
problem is that these would be extremely hard to recognize without explaining what they meant whenever you say them, which is disappointing :/
abbreviations problem can be applied individually to some of these
verdict: very fun but in our current day i cant use them in a way thats practical .. i could imagine these applying to someone personally though, theyre very nice
fool:
oh ab-so-fucking-lutely
“foolfriend”
verdict: i am a jester to entertain the kingdom of god and this reminds me lovingly that my life’s purpose is to die juggling the chainsaws of life’s burdens. satisfying
gamers does anyone know a noun like boy/girl or man/woman applied to nonbinary people specifically BESIDES enby because i hate the word enby and this is the only blog ill get answers on
