 J-Movie Gantz: O (2016)
Disclaimer: I never read/watch the original work of Gantz and my opinion is based on this CGI Movie.
I saw this movie on Netflix last night since I didn’t want to watch (kdrama) Voice. I wasn’t feeling it, so I browsed Netflix and found this movie. Netflix has some semi good selections on J-Movie, including the complete Rurouni Kenshin trilogy if you’re interested :)
I nearly gave up on this movie, but decided to push through and I wasn’t disappointed, but I wasn’t wowed either. The graphics are amazing, but I felt kato’s facial expressions were off compared to the others.
I am re-writing this post since it got waaaay too long.
Gantz is a black orb that that puts you in a game where you fight monsters in real life Japan. All monster attacks are real.  Gantz players are people that have died, Gantz decides I guess. But they are still alive and can leave once the game ends (until Gantz call them for the next game). Reika is an idol and her commercial plays in the background.
Kato is on his way home to his brother when he’s killed by a man wielding a knife. He wakes up and finds himself taking part in the game.
Reika, Suzuki and Nishi are part of his team and their objective is to kill a monster boss. They have always been sent to Tokyo.
You have 2 hours to complete the game, any body parts you loose will be restored once you survive the game. The game awards you with points. If you score 100 you get a bonus. 1. Advanced weapons 2. Resurrect a player and 3. leave the game.Once the game ends you can go back home until the next game. In Kato’s case this is his 2nd time playing Gantz. Suzuki and Reika knew, but Suzuki didn’t want to tell him since he would try to resurrect everyone that died. Once you decide to leave the game, your memory is erased. That’s why he knew he had a brother and gave him coins for him to call his brother. I found this part confusing since their background story is not shared by the orb, but then we find out that he already played the game.
The monsters in the game vary and the final boss as well. In the opening the movie had a big horned monster, but in the game Kato played, the final boss transformed around 5 times to reveal the final boss... I guess Gantz decides.
Yamasaki is from the Osaka team and their next game takes place in Osaka. Yamasaki hides from Kato in the beginning making me think that she knew he played the game before and played with his hero complex to secure that he would resurrect her if she dies. She’s 23 and he’s 17. That’s illegal. She has a son and at the end she tells him she likes him and that he should promise that all four of them would live together... this was his reason to resurrect her since he promised her. She promised on your behalf... Kato always helped the civilians, an act that was frowned upon by Gantz players. His weakness for helping others could be seen as heroic, but also what guarantee do you have that Yamasaki won’t die in another game... will he keep resurrecting her?
Some of the Osaka players have advanced weapons and is mentioned that some of them have won bonuses 4-7 times... Why won’t they leave the game? Even though some of them are psychopaths...
Also thank you for the boob in my face... thanks for that.
It wasn’t a bad movie. The monsters were bad ass and that final one was fucking cool! Even though he didn’t answer Kato’s question on why they were killing each other. He transformed around 5 times... ridiculous for a game. How does Gantz expect them to win? All of the Osaka team were wiped out.
Reika was a badass woman in the final scene. She was a bit of a coward, but the sniping she did was badass. Hanging from the ledge with a spear in her shoulder... cool.
Post is still long...
