“I want to get married,” Stiles says, petulantly.

Derek’s heart races at first, speeds with the excitement and exhilaration of the idea of it, before he realizes Stiles is holding Isaac’s wedding invitation, heavy cardstock with the pretentious french parfum wafting through the air. 

“You just want presents,” he says, holding the door open and stepping back, so that Stiles can come in. 

“No,” Stiles says. “I mean, yes, obviously I would have the world’s coolest registry and wouldn’t waste my time with crystal stemware, but that’s not my point.” He throws himself backwards onto Derek’s couch in a huff. 

“You want to get married,” Derek repeats dryly. 

“Exactly, my friend,” Stiles says, pointing at him. “Exactly.”

Stiles just nodded dumbly, following in bewilderment as Derek hurried up the staircase and into his room. "If this is about me calling your sisters whores, it was just a joke," he began as the door swung closed. "You called my sisters whores?" he asked in confused amusement. Stiles scoffed and looked away. "No, I didn't call them anything," he lied. Derek didn't reply, just peered at the boy intensely. After a moment of silence Stiles started to squirm.

Deaton turned to him, offering a private smile before inclining his head slightly. “Very comforting, Scott, thank you. But,” he looked between them, “I’m not the Emissary they’re coming after.”

Derek frowned and shared a look with Scott, who looked as confused as he did.

“What do you mean?” Scott asked. “What other Emissary is there?”

“Are you kidding me? How do you meet your possible future husband and not ask for his number! Derek what the hell?”

"Why didn’t you ask for his number? Is he in a relationship? Is he a hunter? You better have a good explanation Derek Hale or I swear to all that is holy I’m calling mom and telling her to disown your ass.”

“I didn’t have a chance.”

“Bullsh-“

“I didn’t have a chance to ask before he offered it to me,” he interrupts and has to duck away from a small bench, hiding his grin behind his sparkly green mug.

And this is where Stiles comes into play. Because he's been messing with this system, and doesn't even know. Also, there's a wendigo.

But her big brother’s unwillingness to touch anyone, like he thinks he doesn’t deserve it isn’t the only thing she notices. She also notices how Stiles doesn’t touch him.

Everyone reaches for Derek in some form or another, but Stiles- Stiles is something different altogether because he reaches for Derek but he never makes contact.

He’ll be trying to shimmy past Derek and instead of putting a hand on his arm like most of them do, he’ll reach out with a hand and stop it scant centimeters away from Derek’s skin.

Or they’ll be walking alongside each other and Stiles will hover a hand on Derek’s lower back.

It’s both fascinating and tragic to watch, like NASA lost control of one of their robots and instead of it landing on the moon it’s fated to gravitate around it.
