July 24, 1962 - Three new films, including a double bill, will open in New York today. “Hemingway’s Adventures of a Young Man,” a 20th Century-Fox compilation of short stories by the Nobel Prize winner, is at the Paramount Theatre. Richard Beymer, Arthur Kennedy, and Susan Strasberg head the cast. The late Jerry Wald produced, and Martin Ritt directed. At neighborhood theatres are two Columbia releases: “Jack the Giant Killer,” a fairy tale story about a young man who defends a princess against a sorcerer’s giants and demons, and “Mighty Ursus,” which stars bodybuilder Ed Fury (right) as the legendary Ursus and Moira Orfei as the evil queen Attea in a sword-and-sandal adventure.

American actor Kerwin Mathews (1926-2007).
Kerwin was born in Seattle, Washington State and was two years old when he moved with his divorced mother to Janesville, Wisconsin.  He attended Janesville High School graduating in 1943. He said later that "a kind high school teacher put me in a play and that changed my life."
After serving in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II as a pilot and swimming instructor he attended and performed at Milton College for two years before transferring to Beloit College of drama and music scholarships. He remained at Beloit three years after graduation teaching speech and dramatic arts and appeared in regional theatre. He also taught high school English in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.
After moving to Los Angeles in 1954, Kerwin Mathews acted at the Pasadena Playhouse. While there he met the head of casting for Columbia Pictures leading to a 7 year studio contract.  
Kerwin retired from acting in 1978 and moved to San Francisco, where he ran a clothing and antiques shop. He died in his sleep in San Francisco on July 5th 2007 at the age of 81. He was survived by his partner of 46 years, Tom Nicoll. The couple had met in 1961 when Tom was a display manager at Harvey Nichols luxury department store in London.
