The eldest of the trio of fern fairies who call themselves The Pioneers, and their leader by default. He has a store of experience under his belt, being level-headed, quick-witted and an expert at bargaining. While most fairies have little to no facial foliage, he sports an impressive moustache of pinnatifid leaves. He’s portly and physically quite strong, though flying is tiring for him and for much of the time his feet are firmly on the ground.

As ferns are among the first plants to move into vacant habitats, Jake and his fellow Pioneers have adapted in kind, being continuously on the move to seek out unclaimed space, cultivate their chosen Orders there, and move on once the ecosystem stabilises and they start to be shaded out by larger species. They’re well acquainted with hardships and hard graft, and have a firm camaraderie between each other as well as with others in similar situations. They characteristically travel light, make the most of any available resources and dress in hard wearing clothes, with Jake in particular recognizable by his Boss of the Plains hat.
