Books that I’ve read recently and would recommend. 🖤 Part 2

A Dowry of Blood by S. T. Gibson. A reimagining of Dracula’s brides, written in letters to Dracula from his first wife, Constanta. I love anything vampire-related and can’t even describe how much I loved this book.

A God in the Shed by J. -F. Dubeau. A fantastic horror novel set in a messed up little town. A murder investigation, a serial killer, a god trapped in a shed (literally), the occult, ancient evils, blood and gore, and lots of twists and turns.

The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang. A historical/grimdark fantasy novel heavily inspired by the Second Sino-Japanese war. Very violent and graphic, but an amazing read.

My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix. A fun 80s demon possession story set during the satanic panic. A teen girl drops acid, gets lost in the woods, and accidentally gets possessed by a demon — and it’s up to her friend to save her. Gorey and campy.

Maggie’s Grave by David Sodergren. A pregnant woman, falsely accused of being a witch and brutally murdered, takes revenge on a Scottish town centuries later. Fun, fast-paced folk horror meets splatterpunk with an endless amount of gore.

The Island by Adrian McKinty. A tense, fast-paced thriller set in in an island off of the coast of Australia. This book genuinely stressed me out and made me want to bite my nails, but I couldn’t put it down. A bit of Wolf Creek vibes.

Delicious Monsters by Liselle Sambury. A ghost story and psychological horror with dual timelines. Family drama, a haunted house, toxic parents, etc.

Never Lie by Freida McFadden. A psychological thriller with a great twist. When their realtor doesn’t show up, newlyweds take shelter from a blizzard in a manor that belongs to a missing psychiatrist.

Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim. This book and the world within it makes my heart flutter. A dreamy, whimsical fairy tale blended with East Asian folklore.

The Overnight Guest by Heather Gudenkauf. An atmospheric mystery/thriller. A writer travels to an isolated farmhouse where two unsolved murders and the disappearance of a girl took place decades earlier, and plans to finish her book while snowed in. Things go down hill after she finds a young child outside and decides to bring him in from the cold.

Clytemnestra by Costanza Casati. A retelling of Greek mythology, and such a beautiful and heartbreaking book.

A Day of Fallen Night by Samantha Shannon. A a high fantasy novel and standalone prequel to The Priory of the Orange Tree. Amazing world building, amazing writing, amazing characters, and dragons.

Ring by Koji Suzuki. I’ve always loved the films, both Ringu and The Ring, but I’ve never read the book until now and I highly recommend it if you haven’t either.

This edition of the Spooky Six features none other than Tim Waggoner . . . and a fragant pot of unsweetened herb tea! Author and editor Thomas F. Monteleone has called Tim Waggoner “One of the best horror writers of his generation.” Waggoner's first novel came out in 2001, and since then he's published over fifty novels and seven collections of short stories. He writes original dark fantasy and horror, as well as media tie-ins. He's written tie-in fiction based on Supernatural, Grimm, The X-Files, Alien, Doctor Who, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Transformers, among others, and he's written novelizations for films such as Halloween Kills, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter and Kingsman: The Golden Circle. His articles on writing have appeared in Writer's Digest, The Writer, and The Writer’s Chronicle. He’s the author of the acclaimed horror-writing guide Writing in the Dark, which won the Bram Stoker Award in 2021, as well as its follow-up Writing in the Dark: The Workbook. He won another Bram Stoker Award in 2021 in the category of short nonfiction for his article “Speaking of Horror,” and in 2017 he received the Bram Stoker Award in Long Fiction for his novella The Winter Box. Tim Waggoner: My novel The Way of All Flesh, which came out in 2014, is my take on the zombie apocalypse trope. A large part of the novel takes place inside the mind of the lead character, who is a zombie. How he—and other zombies—see the world is very different from how humans perceive it. Willow Croft: “It was a dark and stormy night . . .” What are your go-to comfort foods, drinks, or other ways to wind down after a long day (or night) of writing? Tim Waggoner: I’m diabetic, so my comfort food options are limited—usually Diet Coke, an Adkins bar, or sugar-free candy.

I may scroll through social media or watch a horror movie. My wife’s not a horror fan, so if she’s hanging out with me, we’ll watch movies that aren’t too scary, along with true-crime documentaries, and UFO/cryptid/ghost documentaries. Ancient Aliens is a favorite of ours because it’s hysterical. Willow Croft: “Did you hear that noise?” Everyone, even us horror writers, have our night terrors. What is it that frightens you the most? Tim Waggoner: I can see the potential danger in just about anything, which is probably why I write horror! Late at night, I sometimes hear a noise and worry that someone might be trying to break into the house. So far, it’s always been a false alarm. I also have nightmares about people breaking in. Otherwise, my fears are normal ones—something bad happening to the people I love, letting down friends and family, etc. Willow Croft: “I’m sure it was nothing. But I’ll just go outside and check, anyway. Alone. With no weapons.” Have you ever gotten writer's block? If so, how do you combat it? Do you have certain rituals or practices that help get you into the writing (or creating) mindset? Tim Waggoner: I don’t think of it as writer’s block, but I do go through occasional lulls where my brain feels sluggish and refuses to cooperate with me. I have difficulty writing fiction during those times, so I switch to nonfiction for a bit, and that works. I’ll also tend to other writing-career-related activities—catching up on correspondence, updating my website, preparing the next edition of my newsletter, writing a new blog entry, creating a new YouTube video, or answering interview questions! Sometimes I’ll vary the time of day I write or the location, and that often gets things going again. I may experiment with a short story idea which isn’t already promised to an editor, so it doesn’t matter if I finish it or not. If I can’t produce any kind of writing, I keep up on writing and publishing news on social media, think of new projects I might try, read and watch movies for inspiration. As long as I keep doing, eventually the fiction-writing engine kicks into gear again. Willow Croft:  “Don’t go into the basement!” Are you an impulsive pantser or a plotter with outlines galore? What other writing/industry advice would you share with your fellow writers & creators? Tim Waggoner: I’m a combination of both a planner and a pantser. Since most of my novels are sold to publishers on an outline first, I have to develop a solid outline to get a contract. After that, I may never look at the outline again as I write the book, and I don’t worry if it veers from the outline, as long as the basic story remains the same as what the editor is expecting to receive. I’ve written a lot of media tie-ins novels, and those require a detailed outline that both the editor at the publishing house and the IP holder have to sign off on, and you need to stick to that outline. Even with an outline, individual scenes aren’t planned out, and sometimes I’ll make rough outlines of scenes, really just rough notes for myself. When it comes to short stories, I’m more of a pantser. The short length allows for more experimentation, and if something I try doesn’t work, there’s usually time to try a different idea. I may start a story with an image or basic concept and go from there. Sometimes I’ll write notes about what to include next in the story as I go. Other times I just write and see where the story takes me. As for advice to pass on, that’s the focus of my nonfiction books, my blog, my YouTube channel, and the articles in my newsletter. I’ve got so much advice to share that it’s hard to pick just one or two things. But if I have to . . . For fiction writers, I’d say write with an immersive point of view and make your fiction more vivid. Regardless of how much we read, most of us experience stories as visual media in movies, on TV series, in video games, etc. far more than we do as printed words. Because of this, beginning writers write stories as if they’re scripts, all dialogue and stage directions.

They write from the point of view of a passive observer who’s watching events play out before them, as if on a screen. Fiction writers need to learn to imagine as if they are the main character in a story or scene, and to write from that character’s viewpoint. That kind of immersive storytelling—where the reader in a sense becomes the viewpoint character—is fiction’s great strength, and right now, no other media or forms of technology can replicate this experience. Willow Croft: “Ring ring!” It’s the middle of the night and the phone mysteriously rings. Which notable writer, or person from history, would be on the other end of the line? Tim Waggoner: Stephen King. I first realized I could become a writer when I read an interview with King in an old horror comic. This was right after The Shining came out. I read a lot as a kid and as a teen, but for some reason, it never occurred to me that I could be a writer. After I read the interview, something clicked, and I realized that writing was something than someone could choose to do. Something I could choose. I’d love to talk to King and thank him, because if I hadn’t read that article, who knows if I’d ever have become a writer? Squid Games--I recognize the DNA.

Yeah, I have no loyalty to Korea at all. I also sell out the US regularly too. If your countries constantly tell you they both hate you, it’s not likely you’re going to feel that loyal, are you? So let’s make this short... Squid Games is basically a combination of “As the Gods Will” which used Children’s games. “Liar Game,” which used the rich mask system and psychology. And “Battle Royale,” which gives you the splatterpunk--a genre found in Japan. (Oh and I watched a truckload of survival games, so I so remember them.) My Koreanness doesn’t quite like that much, honestly. Squid Game doesn’t quite feel adapted enough. Feels like a lesser version of those three. I understand that survival games from Japanese probably comes from anxiety over the atomic bomb, etc. And I’m not saying appropriation, so much since the region trades, exports and imports rather (not quite 100%) freely. But the same cultural context doesn’t quite jive with Korea. I’d rather Korea play more and adapt more like it did with Dream Record and double down hard. But Meh, my feelings of that might be because I’ve watched so damn many kinds of survival games, and the anxiety in heightened far more in the Japanese versions--it hooks deeper on character, so you have to watch their deaths. Also, I think Korea could do well with creating its own genres, by leaning more into its own culture. I’m 100% sure Korea could do that. We have historical events, etc that could invent new genres, like Japanese invented theirs. (I’m also of the thought after studying story structures which were taken from so many places.) But--But it was so new.

Not really. For me, who consumed so much East Asian media, it’s a meh. I thought the creator could have dug deeper thematically and hit closer to an 8/10 rather than a 5/10, but then that would take far more research.

Τι ζητάμε;

Το splatter είναι ένα υπό είδος της λογοτεχνίας τρόμου που επικεντρώνεται στην όσο πιο ζωντανή γίνεται αναπαράσταση των βίαιων πράξεων και της αγνής, πρωταρχικής βίας. Είναι ένα είδος που σαν ορισμός αναπτύχθηκε τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες αλλά ουσιαστικά υπάρχει από πάντα, καθώς η αλόγιστη βία υπάρχει, δυστυχώς, μέσα στα ανθρώπινα γονίδια.

Αυτό που θέλουμε να μας γράψετε είναι: -Διηγήματα με splatter τρόμο. -Τα διηγήματα να διαδραματίζονται σε οποιαδήποτε χώρα, εποχή ή γενικότερο πλαίσιο.

Οι Εκδόσεις ΣΥΜΠΑΝΤΙΚΕΣ ΔΙΑΔΡΟΜΕΣ ξεκίνησαν την παρουσία τους πριν από δέκα τρία χρόνια, έχοντας σαν πρωταρχικό στόχο την προώθηση και προβολή Ελλήνων συγγραφέων που ασχολούνται με τη λογοτεχνία, την ποίηση και τη λογοτεχνία και ποίηση του φανταστικού. Όπως δηλώσαμε και τότε, στην πρώτη ανακοίνωση μας, είμαστε και οι ίδιοι συγγραφείς και αυτή την προσπάθεια την ξεκινάμε πρώτα από όλα για τους ίδιους τους Έλληνες συγγραφείς του φανταστικού, αλλά και για κάθε Έλληνα συγγραφέα, καθώς αναγνωρίζουμε τη δυσκολία που έχουν για να βρουν τρόπο για να εκδώσουν τα κείμενα τους, γιατί στην Ελλάδα οι νέοι συγγραφείς, και όσοι δεν έχουν κάποιον γνωστό, πολύ δύσκολα βρίσκουν έστω και την πιο μικρή δυνατότητα να εκδώσουν έστω και ένα μικρό κείμενο τους. Και σε αυτή την προσπάθεια είστε καλοδεχούμενοι όλοι. Δεν χρειάζεται να σας γνωρίζουμε, δεν χρειάζεται κάποιος να σας συστήσει, δεν χρειάζονται τελετές, δεν χρειάζεται να έχετε ήδη εκδώσει κάτι. Ποτέ δεν θα απορρίψουμε κάποιον επειδή θα είναι καινούργιος συγγραφέας, αντίθετα θα τον τιμήσουμε ισότιμα, ούτε θα απορρίψουμε κάποιον άμα δεν τον ξέρουμε. Το μόνο που χρειάζεται είναι να γράφετε. Στείλτε μας τα κείμενα σας και θα κάνουμε ότι μπορούμε για να σας βοηθήσουμε. Και αυτό το έχουμε αποδείξει, έχοντας εκδώσει πάνω από τριακόσιους Έλληνες συγγραφείς τα τελευταία δώδεκα χρόνια, στο περιοδικό μας και στα βιβλία μας. Έχουμε αποδείξει ότι ήμασταν πάντοτε κοντά στους συγγραφείς και θα συνεχίσουμε να είμαστε. Δεν είναι σκοπός μας να δημιουργήσουμε μια ακόμα μικρή και αδιαφανή ομάδα συγγραφέων και να προβάλλουμε μόνο τρία-τέσσερα άτομα. Γράφετε, ακόμα και αν δεν ξέρετε κανέναν ή δεν έχετε δημοσιεύσει το οτιδήποτε, ότι ηλικία και να είστε; Στείλτε μας τα κείμενα σας και θα τα τιμήσουμε όλα με τον ίδιο σεβασμό.

Μέχρι σήμερα, έχουμε εκδώσει μια σειρά από ανθολογίες Ελληνικού φανταστικού διηγήματος, έχοντας σαν βάση τους «Θρύλους του Σύμπαντος», που φτάνουν φέτος τους εφτά τόμους, και Ελληνικής ποίησης του φανταστικού, και παράλληλα πολλές θεματικές ανθολογίες, καθώς ένας από τους βασικούς λόγους δημιουργίας και ύπαρξης του εκδοτικού ήταν και είναι η προώθηση της Ελληνικής λογοτεχνίας του φανταστικού και των Ελλήνων συγγραφέων του φανταστικού, μέσα από τη δημιουργία σταθερών θεσμών στην Ελληνική λογοτεχνία του φανταστικού και την αύξηση της λογοτεχνικής και εκδοτικής παραγ��γής.

Τα τελευταία χρόνια εκδώσαμε πολλές πρωτοπόρες ανθολογίες για τον χώρο της Λογοτεχνίας του Φανταστικού στην Ελλάδα. Αναφέρουμε ενδεικτικά τους «Θεούς του Ατμού», την πρώτη Ελληνική steampunk ανθολογία, τον «Ραγισμένο Χρόνο», την πρώτη Ελληνική ανθολογία με διηγήματα εναλλακτικής ιστορίας και την «Η αρχή και το τέλος», μια ανθολογία με τέσσερα Ελληνικά μονόπρακτα επιστημονικής φαντασίας, ανθολογίες για Ζόμπι, ανθολογίες με κείμενα εμπνευσμένα από τα έργα των Λάβκραφτ, Πόε, Βερν και πολλές άλλες. Τώρα συνεχίζουμε την πορεία μας και το χτίσιμο του καινούργιου στην λογοτεχνία του φανταστικού στην Ελλάδα με μια σειρά από νέες ανθολογίες. Όλα τα κείμενα για την ανθολογία θα επιλεγούν ανάμεσα από τις συμμετοχές που θα μας σταλούν, έχοντας προτεραιότητα οι νέοι συγγραφείς.

Όροι συμμετοχής:

• Οι διοργανωτές διατηρούν το δικαίωμα να μεταβάλουν τις ημερομηνίες. • Η συμμετοχή στο στάδιο της προ-επιλογής είναι ελεύθερη και δωρεάν για όλους. • Οποιαδήποτε συμμετοχή δεν είναι σύμφωνη με όλους ανεξαιρέτως τους όρους συμμετοχής θα αποκλείεται από το διαγωνισμό με την έγκαιρη, όμως, ειδοποίηση του διαγωνιζόμενου με e-mail. • Με την αποστολή του διηγήματος του ο διαγωνιζόμενος αποδέχεται ότι το έργο του θα τεθεί υπό αξιολόγηση. Αποδέχεται επίσης ότι θα υπογράψει συμβόλαιο συνεργασίας για την ανθολογία με τις εκδόσεις Συμπαντικές Διαδρομές όπου θα καθορίζονται οι όροι της συνεργασίας. Εκχωρεί στις εκδόσεις Συμπαντικές Διαδρομές το αποκλειστικό δικαίωμα για δημοσίευση του διηγήματος του σε βιβλίο (εφόσον επιλεγεί). Οι συγγραφείς αποδέχονται πως δεν θα λάβουν υλικό αντάλλαγμα (δωρεάν αντίτυπα του βιβλίου). • Η συμμετοχή στο διαγωνισμό προϋποθέτει και συνεπάγεται την πλήρη και ανεπιφύλακτη αποδοχή του συνόλου των παραπάνω όρων.

Βασικοί τρόποι προώθησης της ανθολογίας: - Θα γίνει εκτεταμένη παρουσίαση της ανθολογίας και των συγγραφέων που θα πάρουν μέρος, σε συνεχόμενα τεύχη του περιοδικού μας, Συμπαντικές Διαδρομές. Θα γίνει προσπάθεια να παρουσιάσουμε μικρές συνεντεύξεις αν γίνεται και από όλους τους συγγραφείς που θα συμμετέχουν. - Θα γίνουν ανοιχτές παρουσιάσεις στις περισσότερες μεγάλες πόλεις της Ελλάδας και της Κύπρου, σε βιβλιοπωλεία και χώρους, στην Αθήνα, Θεσσαλονίκη, Λάρισα, Γιάννενα, Καλαμάτα, Αμφιλοχία, Γρεβενά, Πρέβεζα, Πάτρα, Ηράκλειο, Ρέθυμνο, Λευκωσία, Λάρνακα, Λεμεσό, Πάφο και σε άλλες, στα πλαίσια του Φεστιβάλ που οργανώνουν οι εκδόσεις μας, των Όψεων του Φανταστικού, όπου θα γίνει συνεχόμενη παρουσίαση της ανθολογίας και των συγγραφέων της.

Όλοι μαζί αναγεννήσαμε τη λογοτεχνία του φανταστικού στην Ελλάδα και στην Κύπρο, όλοι μαζί συνεχίζουμε στον ίδιο δρόμο.
