BOOTLEGS 2023
The year is winding down, so it's time to look back at the last 12 month's crop of live tapes. Crowd noise, tape hiss, distortion, murk ... and plenty of magic, people! As I do this year after year, I ask myself: "Why do I do this year after year?" I guess it's a habit I can't break. But I do love something about these cloudy recordings — the immediacy, the imperfections, the possibilities. Each bootleg, no matter how lo-fi, contains a glimmer of hope, a potential for beauty and transcendence. The fact that not all of them (few of them, in fact!) really deliver on that promise is part of the deal. The search continues!
Anyhoo, here's a sampling of the Doom & Gloom goods from 2023 to get you caught up ... thank you to the tapers, the archivists, the fans, the innocents.

Auntie, Uncle Offering Educational Opportunities for Nieces, Nephews
by Melissa J. Wollman
For many young people, the thought of going back to school can be daunting. But for some, it's a dream come true.
Take, for example, the case of John and Jane Doe. The married couple, both in their 50s, have been working hard their whole lives. But when they learned that their niece and nephew were struggling in school, they decided to do something about it.
The Does set up a trust fund to pay for the children's tuition and expenses, and they also offer their time and expertise to help the kids with their studies.
"We want to make sure our niece and nephew have every opportunity to succeed," John Doe said. "We want them to know that education is important and that we're here to help them."
The Does are just one example of the many generous and educated uncles and aunts out there who are making a difference in the lives of their nieces and nephews.
If you have a child who is struggling in school, don't hesitate to reach out to your extended family for help. You may be surprised at what they're willing to do to support your child's education.

John Updike: First Day of Spring
Tumblr media
On the afternoon of the first day of spring, when the gutters were still heaped high with Monday’s snow but the sky itself was swept clean, we put on our galoshes and walked up the sunny side of Fifth Avenue to Central Park. There we saw: Great black rocks emerging from the melting drifts, their craggy  skins glistening like the backs of resurrected brontosaurs.
A pigeon on the half-frozen pond strutting to the edge of the ice
and looking a duck in the face.
A policeman getting his shoe wet testing the ice.
Three elderly relatives trying to coax a little boy to accompany  his father on a sled ride down a short but steep slope. After much  balking, the boy did, and, sure enough, the sled tipped over and  the father got his collar full of snow. Everybody laughed except the  boy, who sniffled.
Four boys in black leather jackets throwing snowballs at each other. (The snow was ideally soggy, and packed hard with one squeeze.)
Seven men without hats.
Twelve snowmen, none of them intact.
Two men listening to the radio in a car parked outside the Zoo;
Mel Allen was broadcasting the Yanks-Cardinals game from St. Petersburg.
A tahr (Hemitragus jemlaicus) pleasantly squinting in the sunlight.
An aoudad absently pawing the mud and chewing.
A yak with its back turned.
Empty cages labelled "Coati," "Orang-outang," "Ocelot."
A father saying to his little boy, who was annoyed almost to tears by the inactivity of the seals, "Father [Father Seal, we assumed] is very tired; he worked hard all day."
Most of the cafeterias out-of-doors tables occupied.
A pretty girl in black pants falling on them at the Wollman Memorial Rink.
"bill &. doris" carved on a tree, "rex & rita" written in the snow.
Two old men playing, and six supervising, a checkers game.
The Michael Friedsam Foundation Merry-Go-Round, nearly empty of children but overflowing with calliope music.
A man on a bench near the carrousel reading, through sunglasses, a book on economics.
Crews of shinglers repairing the roof of the Tavern-on-the-Green.
A woman dropping a camera she was trying to load, the film unrolling in the slush and exposing itself.
A little colored boy in aviator goggles rubbing his ears and saying, "He really hurt me." "No, he didn't," his nursemaid told him.
The green head of Giuseppe Mazzini staring across the white softball field, unblinking, though the sun was in its eyes.
Water murmuring down walks and rocks and steps. A grown man trying to block one rivulet with snow.
Things like brown sticks nosing through a plot of cleared soil.
A tire track in a piece of mud far removed from where any automobiles could be.
Footprints around a keep off sign.
Two pigeons feeding each other.
Two showgirls, whose faces had not yet thawed the frost of their makeup, treading indignantly through the slush.
A plump old man saying "Chick, chick" and feeding peanuts to squirrels.
Many solitary men throwing snowballs at tree trunks.
Many birds calling to each other about how little the Ramble has changed.
One red mitten lying lost under a poplar tree.
An airplane, very bright and distant, slowly moving through the branches of a sycamore.

Top 5 Must-See Attractions in New York City
According to Dr. Oscar John Ma, if you're thinking about visiting New York City in 2022, these are the top five must-see attractions. You don't want to miss out on these! This is the finest spot to take your kid if you are a child. The Bronx Zoo is the country's biggest urban zoo. There are several animal species from throughout the globe.
The Ellis Island display at the American Museum is the centerpiece of the tour, providing a unique viewpoint on immigration history and the present condition of immigration. The museum has a more than 120-hour audio tour that is enough to amaze even the most jaded tourist. The Millstein Family Hall of Ocean Life, which houses a 30-metre-long life-sized blue whale, is also part of the Museum of Natural History. There is also an IMAX movie theater at the museum.
New York is one of the world's most beautiful cities. It's a frenzy of activity, with renowned sights around every corner. New York has something for everyone, from the Statue of Liberty and Central Park to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Central Park, and Broadway. A journey to New York City would not be complete without seeing the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island. The renowned Brooklyn Bridge, in addition to the Statue of Liberty, should be on your list.
Dr. Oscar John Ma pointed out that, the museum's collection contains around 2,000 pieces of art. The museum is housed in an early 1900s townhouse given by Henry Clay Frick to house his art collection. Visitors may observe Egyptian mummies, Sumerian cuneiform tablets, Old Masters, Roco couture, and precious musical instruments. The museum is a must-see if you're in New York City in 2022.
There are several eateries to select from for foodies. In NYC, there's something for everyone, from Spanish eateries to Greek cuisine. Don't pass up a Broadway musical if you're on a low budget! Tickets may be purchased in advance or on the day of the event at TKTS in Times Square. The New York Fashion Week goes from January 18 to January 20, 2022.
Old Town Alexandria is situated in the southern United States, about four hours from New York City. The area's historic buildings and quaint cafés and bistros make it ideal for a family or couple's holiday. Aside from museums and galleries, the town offers a plethora of shopping choices. If you have time to spend in the country, you could appreciate a vacation to Old Town Alexandria, which is roughly four hours south of New York City.
The Statue of Liberty is a well-known landmark in the city. You can see the statue from the mainland or take a boat to the island to soak in the breathtaking scenery. The Wollman Rink in Central Park is another must-see site in New York City. The park spans 2.5 miles and is half a mile broad. You may tour the city on a bike or in a horse-drawn carriage. Tickets sell out quickly, so make your reservation as soon as possible.
In Dr. Oscar John Ma’s opinion, don't miss the One-World Observatory if you're planning a vacation to New York City in 2022. This vantage point offers one of the greatest views of the city. This observation deck provides stunning views of the city, the Statue of Liberty, and the New Jersey skyline from its lofty location on the Brooklyn Bridge and the Upper New York Bay. The observatory is open every day.
If you like shopping, don't miss the Fifth Avenue retail area. Designer brands and items are featured at the city's flagship shops. There is an abundance of designer clothing. It's also an excellent spot to have a cup of coffee. Just remember to bring lots of warm clothing since the bridge might become chilly. You should anticipate to be shivering on the bridge throughout the winter.

🚨Breaking News🚨 Well done, Los Angeles !! November 4th! And you watch… their numbers in cases, hospitalizations, and deaths will ALL COME DOWN and stay down throughout the winter, especially compared to areas with no restrictions. #Repost @latimes ・・・ The #LosAngeles City Council on Wednesday approved an ordinance that requires proof of #vaccination against #COVID_19 to enter indoor venues including #restaurants, #shops, #movietheaters, and hair and #nailsalons. The vote was 11-2, with John Lee and Joe Buscaino opposing. Lee said earlier this year that he had concerns with the plan, arguing that it was “arbitrary and will not lead to increased vaccinations of our residents.” Mayor Eric Garcetti plans to sign the ordinance into law, spokesman Harrison Wollman said ahead of Wednesday’s vote. Hollywood Scenes In Central Park 😎🎬🎥
New York City’s world-famous Central Park has served as the backdrop for a long list of famous movies. Spend an afternoon strolling through the park while taking note of the locations where your favorite movies scenes were captured.
Nestled at the southeast corner of Central Park, the 20-story luxury hotel, The Plaza Hotel, had its first significant movie role in Alfred Hitchcock's 1959 classic, North By Northwest. Since then The Plaza has been featured in many films including Almost Famous, Home Alone II: Lost In New-York and King of New York.
Wollman Skating Rink, a favorite attraction since it opened in 1949, is one of two ice skating rinks in Central Park. Wollman Rink has been a popular spot for Hollywood movies including Love Story, Serendipity and Home Alone II.
Known as the only straight line in Central Park, the 40-foot-wide Mall, also known as the Promenade, is framed by a quadruple row of American Elm trees, making it one of the park's most visited and photographed sections. Movies such as Maid in Manhattan, Kramer vs. Kramer and Brown Sugar featured scenes filmed at the Mall.
The Bethesda Terrace and Bethesda Fountain are a pleasant spot to relax as well as reminisce of the long list of films that were filmed there: The Avengers, Elf, Enchanted, Stuart Little II and That's How You Know.
Since 1905, the iconic outdoor amphitheater, the Naumburg Bandshell, has been hosting free orchestral concerts in Central Park. The site of a speech delivered by Martin Luther King Jr. and a eulogy read for John Lennon, the Bandshell has become a place of historical importance within the park. Opinion: From ice cube to black cube
WASHINGTON — Once I would have rolled my eyes at a “Homeland” season in which the Russians deftly maneuvered to control whether a Democratic woman, an increasingly paranoid former junior senator from New York, would occupy the Oval Office.
Last year, I shook my head at the “Billions” plotline showing a top New York law enforcement official fighting corruption by day and engaging in sadomasochism by night.
There was a time I would have considered it off the wall if Kanye West said he shared dragon energy with Donald Trump.
Now I don’t blink. Everything is plausible.
We have crossed into a surreal dimension where we are limited only by our imaginations. The American identity and American values are fungible at the moment. The guardrails are off.
Our brains are so scrambled that it’s starting to make sense that none of it makes sense.
For example, it’s dissonant that cybercop Melania strides into the Rose Garden to introduce her “Be Best” plan to help at-risk children at the same time her cyberbully husband unleashes his cruel Be Worst plot to slash the popular children’s health benefits program.
But in the Trump era, sure, why not? Everything is plausible.
Consider how the president lavished praise on Gina Haspel, the evidence-destroying torture queen, tweeting, “There is nobody even close to run the CIA!” At the same time, White House aide Kelly Sadler shrugged off qualms about Haspel from torture survivor John McCain, blithely noting, “He’s dying anyway.”
White House most foul. Everything is plausible — even the jackbooted Dick Cheney rearing his poisonous head to call for the reboot of Torture Inc.
Trump’s renovation of the Wollman Rink is nothing compared with his breathtaking expansion of the capital swamp. He has ushered in a bold new breed of swamp creatures, from Scott Pruitt to Ryan Zinke to Steve Mnuchin to the incomparable Michael “I’m Crushing It” Cohen.
Cohen, who once had to beg Trump to drop by his son’s bar mitzvah, elbowed into the swamp by pretending he had the president’s ear. He made up a job selling access to a White House where he could not even get a job.
Holding out a tin cup as the president’s “personal attorney,” he racked up over $2 million from a law firm and corporations, including AT&T, even though it quickly became clear that, while he swanned around like a character out of “The Sopranos,” he was not connected.
Incredibly, the two things he did manage to connect were his boss’s twin bêtes noires: the saucy porn star and the relentless Russia investigation. Stormy Daniels’ mongoose of a lawyer, Michael Avenatti, revealed on Twitter that the slush fund Cohen used to pay the adult actress was being funded in part by a Russian oligarch, who was questioned by Robert Mueller’s team.
Everything is plausible — even Rudy Giuliani continuing his punch-drunk performance by referring to Avenatti as a “pimp.”
The rest of the world was shocked by the scoop by Jane Mayer and Ronan Farrow in The New Yorker chronicling Eric Schneiderman’s depravity. But it may have been old news to the Page Six President.
A lawyer for two women who said they had been victims of Schneiderman’s sick proclivities told Judge Kimba Wood, who is overseeing a legal dispute about the raids on Cohen’s office and residences, that he had discussed the women’s allegations with the Trump fixer. Cohen may have passed on the dirt to Trump, who was then warring with the New York attorney general over Trump University.
In 2013, Trump presciently tweeted: “Weiner is gone, Spitzer is gone — next will be lightweight A.G. Eric Schneiderman. Is he a crook? Wait and see, worse than Spitzer or Weiner.”
Everything is plausible.
Just when you thought the Trump family saga could not get more absurd, The New York Post, the premiere Trump divorce publication, served up an eye-popping tale about Don Jr.'s soon-to-be ex: Vanessa Trump’s high school romance on the Lower East Side with a Latin King gang member, Valentin Rivera.
And just when you thought the feuds between the Trump and Clinton camps had run out of juice, former Hillary capo and State Department adviser Philippe Reines weighed in with a jaw-dropping tweet to Don Jr.: “Vanessa being with a Latin King must’ve driven you insanely jealous. The machismo, the passion. Tough act to follow. Did you wonder if she fantasized about Valentin Rivera when intimate with you? She did. Every time.”
Every time, everything is plausible.
Also, the other day a Daily Mail headline screamed, “Steve Bannon Was Target of Bribery Plot by Top Qatari Who Invested in Ice Cube’s Basketball League to Get to Trump’s Strategist and Boasted ‘Mike Flynn Took Our Money’, Rapper Claims in Court.”
Everything is plausible, even a segue from Ice Cube to Black Cube.
The Observer, another British paper, broke the news that Trump aides hired an Israeli private intelligence agency to run a “dirty ops” campaign against Obama administration officials who had helped negotiate the Iran nuclear deal, including Ben Rhodes, Barack Obama’s national security adviser. The firm was Black Cube, the same one hired by Harvey Weinstein to spy on the women he attacked and the reporters working on the story.
Everything is plausible.
Finally, we learned from “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Tuesday that Woody Harrelson and Mike Pence were pals in college.
Now, that’s implausible.

6sqft’s series The Urban Lens invites photographers to share work exploring a theme or a place within New York City. In this installment, we take a look back at New York City’s ice skating history just days before the Museum of the City of New York’s “New York on Ice” exhibit opens to the public. Are you a photographer who’d like to see your work featured on The Urban Lens? Get in touch with us at [email protected].
There are few New York winter activities more iconic than ice skating. The rink, the blades, the gliding people attempting to balance – the elements of the pastime are minimal, and so the pictures of it over the centuries are not so very different despite the decades.
On view this Wednesday through April 2018, the Museum of the City of New York will be hosting an exhibit titled “New York on Ice: Skating in the City” featuring many of the images below of ice skating in NYC from the 1800s to the present day. In addition to paintings, postcards, and vintage photographs, the exhibit will also showcase costumes, posters, and more.
