Law 9 - Failure

So in my last post, I had outlined the different laws in simplicity by John Maeda at http://lawsofsimplicity.com/ 

I have now chosen one law to explore further with different examples.  Here are some wise words from John Maeda book “The Laws of Simplicity” found at http://lawsofsimplicity.com/los/law-9-failure.html 

In his book he states “when you try to simplify—which is to learn from your mistakes. When faced with failure, a good artist, or any other member of the creative class, leverages the unfortunate event to radically shift perspective. One person's failed experiment in simplicity can be another person's success as a beautiful form of complexity.”  Basically, he is saying when you learn from your failures.  Other people can either hold on to that grudge or you can change how you see things and see it for what it is a learning curve which can help you achieve more better exciting things.

Failure OMG the terror.....you know I will tell you a story growing up my family wanted me to become a nurse as I was so emotionally well trained I loved looking after my dad, just getting to bond with him but I also cared a lot for him so this pushed me to be there for him and to help kind of take care of him pretty crazy for a 12-year-old.  Anyway with myself taking care of my dad also showed my parents see my life career be a nurse.  Now there is nothing wrong with being a nurse I think our nurses are amazing and do such wonderful things in helping others but I couldn’t imagine me as a nurse...Okay, I did study there and won the student of the year award but this actually pushed me away only because I still wanted to do art.  I yearned to do art I knew I wasn’t that great at it but who cares I was willing to learn.  So here's the word FAILURE there we go Failure to my parents, failure to my life, failure to everything I ever knew.....sniff it's ok I am finally here making art :P with or without my parent's approval.

Actually, failure is a good thing.  If your reading this post you would know that failure is everywhere however it depends on how you look at things.  When we are babies and we want to walk.  You can’t tell me oh it was a miracle I walked straight away if you did good on you but most of us failed, and fell over but kept going anyway.  You see with failure no great success would ever be achieved.  It may be one big failure but if you keep on pushing it could be a success you won’t know till you try right?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dww3Oo8ropA and it is so motivational when I am feeling down and lost.  Don’t try and hide your failures let them inspire you and make you grow more.  A lot of people don’t reach their dream, not because of failure but because they give up.   Hey, I have to admit when I left nursing I gave up on everything I assumed my art wasn’t good enough, I wasn’t good enough and that my life would be fine...Boy was I wrong if I had listened to that little voice when I was younger to go and do art and not listen to what others were saying around me I don’t know I could have possibly been a different person but that’s ok we are in the now and I am finally here studying Visual Arts doing what I enjoy.  However I hope that you all learn that with failure this is where you should not stop keep going, don’t stop at your first failure or your millionth one.  Say to yourself I will learn faster, I will work harder, I will work smarter and I will not quit until my dream is a reality.  Because that is what I am doing right now, this is pushing me to be not a better artist, a better wife or mum, just to be better as a person.

I will give you a sneak peek of the photography I did at the beginning of the year.  Now the photo below is of my son however when I look at this photo yes it is a beautiful photo.  However I have noticed he is out of focus it is quite blurry and light.  This wasn’t the best photo but at that time I was so confused with the buttons.  Showing ISO, Shutterspeed, and Aperture I was like OMG I so don’t get it.  Too much to think about I just want the dam photo...Honestly, it did my head in and I felt like I had failed as I didn’t get anything.  However I did not dwell on it I just carried on taking photos and more photos, and more not stopping and I am so glad that I didn’t stop learning as now my photos are better and I am just going to learn more and play.  I think this is where I started to think differently.  I am going to play and take risks as if you don’t push the boundaries you won’t learn anything new.  Yes, I think what if I fail and if I do good so then I can learn more.

The one above this is one of my photos I did probably 3 weeks ago and been in the photography studio is dealing with another completely different beast.  

Haha did I fail in the studio with lighting hell yeah I did did I let that stop me nope :P see everybody just has to keep going and pushing to get results.

Again with learning, this is something we all do it teaches us to grow with failure.  I know failure is seen as a bad thing but I don’t like to see it as a negative you just have to get over it and learn.  I can tell you many stories about failing in my life but if I didn't fail I wouldn’t learn the lesson.

So, in conclusion, I would like to say to you all is if you fail at something don’t take it so hard.  It’s not the end of the world.  Just dust yourself back up and try again.  Because when you start from the bottom there’s only one way to go and that is up :)
