Marco Reus on injuries, his return, the World Cup and much more
He's a world footballing star, an affable man off the pitch and a deadly exponent of the beautiful game on it. After 259 days out through the latest of his major injuries, Marco Reus has returned to action as if he was never away.
In the first of a two-part exclusive interview with bundesliga.com, Borussia Dortmund's German superstar talks injuries, comebacks, friends and the World Cup.
bundesliga.com: How are you feeling at the moment?
Marco Reus: “Relaxed. I'm pleased that I'm able to help the team and that I'm out on the pitch again. I’m happy that I can enjoy my football again.”
bundesliga.com: How is it going for you at the moment in a sporting sense?
Reus: “As I said, I don’t measure myself on goals alone but also the way that I play – that I am making a difference in games, am involved in good passages of play. That is an important factor for me and I know that there is room for improvement there. Particularly in terms of minutes played because it's always difficult to play 90 minutes after such a long break with injury. I can deal with this though – it's not a problem. It gets better every week though as I get fitter and fitter. I'm very pleased.”
bundesliga.com: Can you remember the announcer shouting your name as you walked out to make your return against Hamburg?
Reus: “I wasn't aware of that, unfortunately. I saw a video of it afterwards. They did very well. My friends had a small heart attack that I had been injured during the warm up. Of course it's very nice to have those moments if you're making a return from a long-term injury. It’s a great feeling to be welcomed like that. For me personally it was more important that we won the match that day.”
bundesliga.com: How difficult is it to pace yourself in your comeback?
Reus: “It's a balancing act, certainly. I regularly have conversations with the manager about how to go about this. You have to be careful of course that there aren't any follow up injuries because the muscles behave slightly differently. I've played a lot of games in recent weeks so I just need to make sure I recover well and train well, too. I'm not that concerned at the moment considering how things are going. But it's important to be aware, yes.”
bundesliga.com: You once said you would trade all your money for health. Do you stand by that?
Reus: “To be honest, it wasn’t meant completely sincerely. When you pick up a serious injury as a footballer – and I mean long term injuries where you are out for six, seven, eight months or more, not just a three or four week hamstring tears – then that's simply the case. You want to play the sport that you have been playing for years and have enjoyed for years. It can be incredibly difficult to come to terms with the fact that you'll not be able to do that for six, seven, eight months. But injuries are part of football, you have to adjust and learn what the repercussions are. Your body changes as a result of this period. You see other perspectives and that has certainly shaped me as a person. I'm happy to be back now.”
bundesliga.com: Have the set backs shaped your personality?
Reus: “Yes. Not just to a small extent, but in a big way. When you're injured for such a long time, you reflect on what life has to offer as a whole. I know that it's not just football. There are more important issues out there. Particularly because you can only play until you are 35-years old and then you enter a new chapter of your life. I think it's very important that you don't start thinking about your life after football when you are 33 or 34. There are many more amazing things in this world and it's important to think about these things before you retire. It's difficult for every single player in my opinion because there is such a big hole to fill after you retire. The level of fame is no longer there and people are much less interested in you. That's actually a good thing because it allows you to do those things that you perhaps were not able to before. I think it's important to be thinking about your personal life and your family not just when you've retired but also during your career. Also to do those things that you want and can do now.”
bundesliga.com: How happy are you to be playing with Mario Götze and André Schürrle again? Things are going well, right?
Marco Reus: “It's going in the right direction. All three of us are very pleased that we're able to play on the same pitch again after such a long time. That's very important for us and for the team. They're both great guys and they show that out on the pitch too. I hope and believe that we'll keep improving in the coming weeks so that we can continue to help the team.”
bundesliga.com: Julian Weigl explained that you helped him over the summer with his injury?
Reus: “Definitely. When he first came to Dortmund we shared a room during the training camp. We got on very well from day one and still do now. His injury back then against Augsburg was very tough because it came in an important period of our season. He missed out on the DFB Cup final and winning the cup was in many ways in his honour. But I’m sure that if I told him that, he would say that it doesn’t make any difference to him and that he just wanted to be a part of it. So it was a real shame, and then a short time later I got injured too. But we spoke very regularly and met up because we're good friends. There was a period where we were both injured and so we met up in the evenings to play PlayStation, to talk and just to have some positive thoughts.”
bundesliga.com: How big is your desire to be a part of the World Cup squad this summer?
Reus: “Huge. I'll look forward to it when we get there. My excitement will grow more and more as we get closer and start playing international games. We will see what decisions the head coach makes. I'm very relaxed though. I will not miss out through injury.”
bundesliga.com: What is Germany coach Joachim Löw saying at the moment?
Reus: “We stay in regular contact of course, particularly because of my injury. We message achother and speak on the phone to discuss my progress and other matters. We're in close contact.”
bundesliga.com: What are your sporting aims for the coming months?
Reus: “That we achieve the goals we've set ourselves as a club. That we get direct qualification for the Champions League and get to the final of the Europa League. Those are our aims and we have the quality to achieve them. We know we'll have to work even harder but the stronger our opponents are, the better we will perform. And then hopefully the World Cup.”

i'm about 20lbs overweight and normally it doesn't bother me and i am trying to lose weight at the moment but recently i've been getting thoughts that my weight makes me unloveable and ugly. i tend to hide under baggy clothes anyway, and one of my irl friends is really skinny so every time i see her i feel bad. i've even had a few people making comments at me in the street. some positivity from julian weigl would be nice please
Julian wants you to know that he empathizes with your situation. It’s so hard to feel like your body isn’t enough, to feel betrayed by it. But remember to be kind to it, too. This is the one body you’ve got, anon. Be grateful to it. Be grateful for the muscles that let you hug your friends and family, be grateful for your lungs filling with air, be grateful for your beating heart and the ribs that protect it.
As far as weight goes, Julian wants to offer you a quote. Everyone has a blind spot in the shape of themselves. What he takes from that quote is that when we look in a mirror, something happens to convert that mirror into a funhouse mirror, zooming in only on the parts of ourselves that we like least. So he’d like you to remember that what you see in the mirror isn’t what everyone else sees. So whatever your brain tells you, you are not unlovable and ugly, regardless of the number on the scale.
He also wants to tell you that weight and health can be related, but they can also not be related. He doesn’t know what your situation is, but he’d gently like to suggest that you focus on your health and what your body can do and what you’d like for it to be able to do. If you’re exercising and trying to get stronger and healthier, that’s great. He’d suggest maybe recruiting a friend to go with you so you can have more fun. Please don’t try to restrict your diet too much- he’d like to kindly remind you that carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are all essential, so cutting out too much will only hurt you.
He’s so sorry that you’ve had to deal with people in the street making comments about you. That is absolutely not okay. He knows it’s incredibly hard, but he’d like to ask you to try to separate your conception of yourself from other people’s.
You have all of Julian’s support, and he hopes you can feel a little bit better about yourself as time goes forward. He wants you to know that it might not be the same every day, that even if you’ve been feeling amazing all week, you might wake up one day and feel awful, and he wants you to know that that doesn’t mean that you haven’t made any progress in learning to love yourself and accept yourself.
Lastly, he’d like to offer you one challenge. Get up and go look in the mirror, anon. Point out three genuinely nice things about your appearance. If you don’t feel the compliments are genuine, keep going until you get three genuine ones. He suggests doing this every day, maybe while you’re brushing your teeth. He guarantees that there are lots of nice things about your appearance, you just have to get past that funhouse mirror effect and train your eyes to see them.

do you see weigl off to psg in the future? they need a dm and tuchel loves weigl and brought the best out of him in bvb..
Honestly, I’ve heard so many times that Julian Weigl was actually part of the #TuchelOut crowd that I almost kind of believe it. But I do still have my own guess about how things were at the end, based on how I observed things in the final months/weeks rather than based on the conflicting info we got from “insiders”. Obviously I’m not going to assume that my guess is the right answer, it’s just my own guess, but I’m also not going to assume that these insiders have the truth because so much of their info has been proven false at this point.
I think in Weigl’s case, we can pick up some hints from the way he denied the rumours. When asked about PSG, he just said he can understand why people would expect him to go to PSG because he worked well with Tuchel but he won’t leave BVB this summer. If there had been no contact at all, the first thing any player would usually say is “PSG never even contacted me” and not “I can see why you would think that”. On Tuchel’s end, when he arrived at PSG, he was asked in his first official interview if he would sign his “protégé” Julian Weigl. He gave no conclusive answer, nor did he take issue with this description of Weigl. The interview came across as a fairly controlled PR situation so I doubt this reporter just took a guess out of the blue. From this, I think it’s quite likely that Tuchel/PSG at least contacted Julian.
On the other hand, as much as we can speculate about pull factors for joining PSG, we also need to consider pull factors for staying at BVB. Germany is his home country, and his family and friends are all there. He has regular playing time at a team that plays CL football, he plays in a stronger domestic league, he gets on well with his teammates, and the atmosphere of the locker room suits his down to earth personality. It’s hard to guess how much he wants a wage increase, or how ambitious he is to take a bigger step, or how badly he wants to try something new. Every player wants those things to some degree, Julian included, but it has to be measured against what he already has at BVB.
Right now, I do think BVB is a fairly attractive place. If this season had begun the same way as the whole shitshow we saw last season, I might feel a stronger risk of losing him, especially since he lost his NT spot. But at this moment, BVB looks more competitive and he’s also playing somewhat better football himself. So my guess is that he’ll stay, but it’s really just based on my guess about how much he cares about which things.
#but honestly if you put me in his shoes i would find psg tempting af#because i think he's too young and talented to think only about what's comfortable#it's a good opportunity to try something new and challenge himself on a new stage#i'd much rather regret doing something than regret not doing something#especially when there's no real harm in it#i would fully support him giving it a shot at any top team outside of germany or england

Borussia Dortmund team work to overcome bomb attack
After having their team bus hit with three explosions on Tuesday, Borussia Dortmund players are still overcoming the shock along with the loss of their defender Marc Bartra, who is in the hospital with a fractured wrist. It can be hard enough sometimes to keep your mind on the game, but this experience would test anyone. The team has rallied around each other along with their fans as they have to ready themselves to hit the field again on Saturday when Eintracht Frankfurt visits in the Bundesliga. "It comes in waves. Today feels the worst," Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel said Thursday. "We have to find a way to deal with it. But we don't know yet how that's supposed to happen." Dortmund midfielder Nuri Sahin made it clear that his thoughts were far from the field in the rescheduled Champions League quarterfinal match against Monaco on Wednesday - a game Dortmund lost 3-2 after an uncharacteristically hesitant start. "Until I was on the pitch in the second half, I didn't think about football, to be honest. Because last night I didn't realize what happened, and when I was at home and my wife and my son were waiting in front of the door, there I felt how lucky we were," the visibly shaken Sahin told former Norway international Jan Aage Fjortoft, now a journalist. "I know football is very important. We love football. We suffer with football. We love football. I know we earn a lot of money, we have a privileged life, but we are human beings. There's so much more than football in this world. Last night we felt it." Dortmund defender Marc Bartra was hit by shrapnel as three explosions hit the bus. The Spaniard was taken to the hospital and had surgery on a broken bone in his wrist. A spokeswoman for federal prosecutors, Frauke Koehler, said metal from one of the bombs lodged in a headrest. It could easily have been a lot worse. "I can't forget the faces," Sahin said of his teammates, who ducked for cover when the explosions hit. "I will never forget these faces in my life for sure. Oh yeah, when I saw Marc there, and I saw Schmelle (Marcel Schmelzer), I sat next to Schmelle and I will never forget Schmelle's face. It was unbelievable." Schmelzer also highlighted the impact of the attack on his side. "We have to function like puppets," the Dortmund captain said. "You read the whole time of an attack on our bus. But you shouldn't forget there were 30 people sitting in it, so it's an attack on us as people. It makes us incredibly sad but also incredibly fortunate to be standing here today, especially when you hear the details that are coming out (from the investigation). We're just incredibly lucky no one else besides Marc was seriously injured." On Wednesday, Tuchel was stinging in his criticism of UEFA for going ahead with the Champions League game so soon after the attack. "We had the feeling that we were being treated as if a beer can had hit our bus," said Tuchel, who claimed he wasn't asked about whether to proceed with the game. But Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke said Tuesday that a congested calendar meant there was little option for postponing the game further. UEFA spokesman Pedro Pinto told The Associated Press the governing body was in touch with all parties. Tuchel may have been trying to protect his players, but it's clear that the attack had an effect on his side. "Most players hardly slept, myself included," Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl said. "I tried to come to terms with it with my family, tried to wind down and switch off. In the end, in the game, we made the best we could of it." Amid increased security and while the investigations continue, Dortmund will have to make the best of it again Saturday as it seeks to improve upon its fourth place to secure automatic Champions League qualification. Fourth only brings a playoff. Apart from Bartra, who would have been suspended for an accumulation of yellow cards anyway, Dortmund is struggling with injuries - there was one spot free on the bench against Monaco because of a lack of available players. "The more time we get, the better," Tuchel said Thursday, adding he hoped Marco Reus could make his return. Dortmund is unbeaten in a club-record 34 league games at home. It has scored in its last 19 games, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang second behind Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski in the scoring chart. Lewandowski has 26 goals in 28 games. Aubameyang, who played two games less, has 25. Frankfurt, which was previously third, has lost its last four games away and it hasn't won any of its last nine.

Uerdingen 0-2 Borussia Dortmund: Marco Reus and Paco Alcacer fire giants past stubborn minnows in first round of German Cup
Uerdingen offered severe resistance but was undone by Bundesliga side
Kevin Großkreutz, formerly from Dortmund, played the right back for hosts

Borussia Dortmund overcame a persistent challenge from the third division Uerdingen and a reunion with world cup winner Kevin Großkreutz to win 2-0 on Friday in the first round of the German Cup.
Marco Reus and Paco Alcacer both scored for Dortmund, which simply had too much firepower for the designated home team despite an excellent performance by Uerdingen goalkeeper Lukas Konigshofer in Düsseldorf.
& # 39; It was not harder than expected. We knew what to expect, & said Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl.
Marco Reus scored the opening goal of the match just after half time against Uerdingen
Kevin Großkreutz enjoyed a reunion with his former side and was given a great reception
& # 39; A lot can happen in the first round, also for the smaller teams. That's why we had to work. & # 39;
Großkreutz, a Dortmund fan who played for his hometown team from 2009-2015, was celebrated by visiting fans before the game.
& # 39; It was great to see the old colleagues and the fans. Borussia Dortmund will always be my team & # 39 ;, says Großkreutz, who had organized 200 tickets for family and friends.
Paco Alcacer scored with a brilliant free kick to seal the seal over the third division
The striker's effort let the side of the Bundesliga breathe the sigh of enlightenment
The 31-year-old Großk reutz reacted by removing Lukasz Piszczek's header in the fifth minute. 013]
Mats Hummels made a difficult debut in his first game back for Dortmund. The former German defender, who returned from Bayern Munich, was lucky to avoid a yellow card before an error almost gave Uerdingen the lead minutes before the break.
Osayamen Osawe dragged his shot wide when he only had goalkeeper Marwin Hitz
Reus broke the deadlock four minutes after the break, although TV repetitions showed that he may have used his right arm to cross for Manuel Akanji before he scored, and Alcacer curled a brilliant free kick over the 70 minute mark.
There was a lot of travel support for Dortmund that went on to the second round

Football has long since moved on from being a team sport. The pressures of fulfilling relentlessly long fixture lists each season, the sheer intensity of the modern game as it is played on the pitch and the competition for trophies and transfers between the world’s richest clubs, has turned title races and cup runs into wars of attrition that can only be won by the most expensive and extensive squads. Sign up for a 24 Hour NOW TV Pass and watch all of the live football action on Sky SportsIt is not enough to have the best XI, or even the strongest bench. Talent at the very top is now stockpiled to ensure managers have back-up options for their back-up options, and a depth of quality that requires regular use of the loan system to keep everyone match fit and happy. Yet which sides in Europe’s top five leagues boast the most in reserve beyond their starting line-ups and substitutes? Below, are the 10 squads with the highest degree of redundancy from across the Bundesliga, La Liga, Ligue 1, Premier League and Serie A. 10. NAPOLI Starting XI:Jose Reina; Elseid Hysaj, Raul Albiol, Kalidou Koulibaly, Faouzi Ghoulam; Jorginho, Piotr Zielinski, Marek Hamsik; Jose Callejon, Dries Mertens, Lorenzo Insigne (4-3-3) Second string:Rafael Cabral; Christian Maggio, Nikola Maksimovic, Vlad Chiriches, Ivan Strinic; Allan, Amadou Diawara, Marko Rog; Emanuele Giaccherini, Arkadiusz Milik, Leonardo Pavoletti (4-3-3) After a summer that saw Juventus activate Gonzalo Higuain’s release clause to snap up last year’s topscorer in Serie A, Napoli manager Maurizio Sarri has shown how resourceful he can be to keep the Little Donkeys in Italian title race. Their strength in depth was first highlighted by how quickly his side adapted to losing Arek Milik who was ruled out for most of the season shortly after he was signed to replace the departed Argentinian up front. Attacking midfielder Dries Mertens stepped up to provide the goals in his absence, with the rest of the team hardly skipping a beat as they continued to function and produce the sort of fluid attacking football that has become their trademark under Sarri. Greatest depth:Central midfield – Sarri is a manager obsessed with dominating the ball and controlling midfield, and his squad is filled with players capable of slotting in to direct play and keep the tempo of passes up through the middle. Least cover:Full-backs – Elseid Hysaj and Faouzi Ghoulam do a bit of everything for Napoli down the right and the left, in attack and defence, but the quality level drops off when it comes to their back-ups down the flanks. 9. ARSENAL Starting XI: Petr Cech; Gabriel, Laurent Koscielny, Nacho Monreal; Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Aaron Ramsey, Granit Xhaka, Kieran Gibbs; Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez; Olivier Giroud (3-4-2-1) Second string: David Ospina; Shkodran Mustafi, Per Mertesacker, Rob Holding; Hector Bellerin, Francis Coquelin, Mohamed Elneny, Alex Iwobi; Lucas Perez, Theo Walcott; Danny Welbeck (3-4-2-1) Arsene Wenger has the players to fill every position in his team twice over. The question is whether the quality and consistency is there across the squad, or whether the Frenchman succeeds in getting the most out of all the options available to him. Injuries can also obscure just how much depth is available at the Emirates when everyone is fit. Santi Cazorla isn’t even listed in the two line-ups above. However, waiting on their strongest possible XI to ready and available to play has become the a way of life for Arsenal in recent seasons. On paper, they are strong. In reality, their squad can still appear to be paper thin once the wrong players are lost to the physio room. Greatest depth:Strikers – The Gunners have five players who can lined up as the main centre-forward. Least cover:Match-winners – While Arsenal have a plethora of options to play up front, they lack a genuine, world class talent to lead the line when Alexis Sanchez doesn’t fancy the job of being the lead striker. 8. ATLETICO MADRID Starting XI:Jan Oblak; Juanfran, Stefan Savic, Diego Godin, Filipe Luis; Koke, Gabi, Saul Niguez, Yannick Carrasco; Kevin Gameiro, Antoine Griezmann (4-4-2) Second string:Miguel Angel Moya; Thomas Partey, Jose Gimenez, Lucas Hernandez, Sime Vrsaljko; Alessio Cerci, Augusto Fernandez, Tiago, Nicolas Gaitan; Angel Correra, Fernando Torres (4-4-2) Diego Simeone hasn’t so much built a team at Atletico Madrid as a hard-wearing resistance cell, happy to sit deep, lock down their half of the pitch and defend for 90 minutes or more to get the result they want. Yet while he may prefer to rely on his regulars, the second city of the Spanish capital have diversified their options in recent years, with their manager able to alter the make-up of his team depending on his opponent. Greatest depth:Centre-back – Diego Godin is the leader at the back but in Stefan Savic and Jose Gimenez, the Uruguayan has two extremely able deputies capable of keeping opponents quiet in front of Jan Oblak’s goal, with Lucas Hernandez also on hand to protect his side in the middle of defence. Least cover:Left-back – While Atletico have three players who have dropped in to cover right-back this season, including midfielder Thomas Partay, Simeone’s squad comes up short on the other side of the pitch when it comes to left-footed replacements for Filipe Luis. 7. BORUSSIA DORTMUND Starting XI:Roman Burki; Lukasz Piszczek, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Marc Bartra, Marcel Schmelzer; Julian Weigl; Ousmane Dembele, Gonzalo Castro, Raphael Guerreiro, Marco Reus; Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (4-1-4-1) Second string:Roman Weidenfeller; Felix Passlack, Matthias Ginter, Sven Bender, Erik Durm; Nuri Sahin, Sebastian Rode; Emre Mor, Christian Pulisic, Shinji Kagawa; Andre Schurrle (4-2-3-1) Youth is high up on the agenda for Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc who has provided manager Thomas Tuchel with a rich and steady stream of young prospects with incredibly high potential to work with in the first team. The 43-year-old has responded by building a team that that plays a fittingly thrilling and fresh brand of attacking football, and while the loss of Mario Gotze to a long-term medical condition has been a blow, the club have had the players to cover for the attacking midfielder following his disrupted return from Bayern Munich in 2016. Greatest depth:Attacking midfield – Tuchel has made the most of Julian Weigl’s brilliance at recycling possession and screening the back line to fill his team with more creative and offensively-minded midfielders and wingers to play behind the striker, and the make up of the squad reflects that. Least cover:Experience – the sale of Mats Hummels, Ilkay Gundogan, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Jakub Błaszczykowski in the summer saw the average age of Tuchel’s squad plummet to 24.5 years and the dressing room lose three Bundesliga title-winners. 6. MANCHESTER UNITED Starting XI:David De Gea; Antonio Valencia, Eric Bailly, Daley Blind, Matteo Darmian; Ander Herrera, Paul Pogba; Juan Mata, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Anthony Martial; Marcus Rashford (4-2-3-1) Second string:Sergio Romero; Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw; Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini; Jesse Lingard, Wayne Rooney, Ashley Young; Zlatan Ibrahimovic (4-2-3-1) Jose Moruinho is manager who has been blessed with an embarrassment of riches at Old Trafford, by accident and excess rather than design. The business strategy pursued by Ed Woodward and the Glazer family to create the most commercially exploitable club in world football has even affected the team’s transfer policy. Players must be signed with the profile and hype to further enhance United’s image and bring in the sponsorship deals. Not that Mourinho is complaining, of course! Injuries may have robbed him of key players in the final weeks of the season but he has spent most of his first campaign in Manchester with the far from unpleasant headache of deciding which combination of hugely expensive playmakers he wishes to deploy in his next game. United have a wage bill to match their array of options and pay the most out of any Premier League sides. Fortunately for the Glazers, they have the revenue to make it work. Greatest depth:Goalkeeper – De Gea has taken care of business in the Premier League this season while Romero has started the most games in the Europa League, proving himself to be one of the most reliable second-choice shot stoppers in Europe this season. Least cover:Defensive midfield – Even at 35, Michael Carrick remains the only option with any real experience playing in front of the back four, which has lead to a lack of balance in midfield at times. 5. CHELSEA Starting XI:Thibaut Courtois; Cesar Azpilicueta, David Luiz, Gary Cahill; Victor Moses, N’Golo Kante, Nemanja Matic, Marcos Alonso; Pedro, Eden Hazard; Diego Costa (3-4-3) Second string:Asmir Begovic; Ola Aina, Kurt Zouma, John Terry, Nathan Ake; Nathaniel Chalobah, Cesc Fabregas; Willian, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Kenedy; Michy Batshuayi (4-2-3-1) On the surface, Chelsea may appear to have a fairly thin squad, but while some clubs boast depth for depth’s sake, every player available to Antonio Conte has a purpose, with not a single spot in the dressing room wasted. Although they have been lucky with injuries, whenever the Italian has reshuffled his line-up, his changes have tended to stick with the players coming in picking up where their teammates left off. That is genuine depth rather than a meaningless, superior head count. Greatest depth:Options off the bench – Chelsea can call upon players such as Cesc Fabregas and Willian to change games, either as substitutes during a match or to tweak Conte’s approach from kick off. Least cover:Wing-backs – When Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso are injured or rested, there is a clear loss of thrust, penetration and width out wide for the Blues. 4. BAYERN MUNICH Starting XI:Manuel Neuer; Philipp Lahm, Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels, David Alaba; Arturo Vidal, Thiago Alcantara; Arjen Robben, Thomas Muller, Franck Ribery; Robert Lewandowski (4-2-3-1) Second string:Sven Ulreich; Rafinha, Javi Martinez, Joshua Kimmich, Juan Bernat; Niklas Dorsch, Xabi Alonso, Renato Sanches; Fabian Benko, Douglas Costa, Kingsley Coman;(4-2-3-1) Carlo Ancelotti may preside over one of the older and more established dressing rooms on this list but Bayern are not short of options, especially when veteran match-winners Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben can stay fit on each wing to rip teams to pieces. Bayern will add Hoffenheim midfielder Sebastian Rudy and centre-back Niklas Sule in the summer as they prepare for the retirements of Lahm and Alonso. Greatest depth:Midfield – In the middle of the park, the Bavarians have the players to cover for every role and duty, from creating chances, winning back the ball, screening their defence or driving moves from deep. Their surplus of midfielders has even allowed them to use Javi Martinez to fill in as a centre-back. Least cover: Striker – When Lewandowski isn’t available to play, Bayern struggle to score. It is a glaring hole in their squad, and cost them in the Champions League as the Poland international missed out on facing Real Madrid at the Allianz Arena in the quarterfinals. 3. PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN Starting XI:Kevin Trapp; Thomas Meunier, Marquinhos, Thiago Silva, Layvin Kurzawa; Thiago Motta, Blaise Matuidi, Marco Verratti; Lucas Moura, Edinson Cavani, Angel Di Maria (4-3-3) Second string:Alphonse Areola; Serge Aurier, Grzegorz Krychowiak, Presnel Kimpembe, Maxwell; Adrien Rabiot, Christopher Nkunku, Javier Pastore; Hatem Ben Arfa, Goncalo Guedes, Julian Draxler (4-3-3) Whenever one of Europe’s most exciting young players enters the transfer market, links to Paris Saint-Germain soon follow. The Qatar-backed club have spent big on transfer fees and wages to bring in the talent and build a squad they believe is worthy of challenging for the Champions League. Although they may have taken a step back on the domestic front under Unai Emery this season, they still boast more quality in depth than most other teams in Europe. Greatest depth:Creative midfielder – PSG tend to dominate possession both in domestic games and when playing in Europe and have filled their stocks with a surplus of playmakers capable of fashioning chances at will for Edinson Cavani. Least cover: Centre-back – After selling David Luiz back to Chelsea in the summer, the Parisians’ back line looks vulnerable. The wrong injury at the wrong time to Thiago Silva or Marquinhos would leave them without proper cover in the middle of defence. 2. JUVENTUS Starting XI:Gianluigi Buffon; Dani Alves, Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Samir Khedira, Miralem Pjanic; Juan Cuadrado, Paulo Dybala, Mario Mandzukic; Gonzalo Higuain (4-2-3-1) Second string:Neto; Andrea Barzagli, Mehdi Benatia, Daniele Rugani; Stephan Lichtsteiner, Claudio Marchisio, Mario Lemina, Tomas Rincon, Kwadwo Asamoah; Marko Pjaca, Moise Kean (3-5-2) Max Allegri has built on the foundations left behind by former Juventus manager Antonio Conte to continue to lead the Old Lady to win more trophies and dominate Italian football. All that is left for the club to do is return to the top of the European game, and with one of the most complete squads on the continent, they may be about to do just that. In the summer, they took a leaf out of Bayern Munich’s old rule book to snatch away Miralem Pjanic and Gonzalo Higuain from their title rivals Roma and Napoli, respectively, to cover for the departure of Paul Pogba to Manchester United. Somehow, they have only become stronger in his absence. Greatest depth:Defence – Whether Juventus line up with a back four or a three-man defence, the Italians have strength in depth in every single position across their back line. Andrea Barzagli is able to come in and out to add an additional centre-back to the team. Stephan Lichtsteiner and Kwadwo Asamoah may not offer the sheer explosiveness that Dani Alves and Alex Sandro can provide down each flank but their experience counts. Least cover: None – The purchase of Tomas Rincon from Genoa in January 2017 plugged one of the few gaps in Max Allegri’s squad to give the Italian champions another creative option in midfield besides Miralem Pjanic. 1. REAL MADRID Starting XI:Keylor Navas; Dani Carvajal, Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Marcelo; Casemiro, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos; Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo (4-3-3) Second string:Kiko Casilla; Danilo, Raphael Varane, Nacho, Fabio Coentrao; Mateo Koavacic, Isco; Lucas Vazquez, James Rodriguez, Marco Asensio; Alvaro Morata, (4-2-3-1) The reigning champions of Europe have everything going for them to become the first team to retain the Champions League and are the leaders in the title race in Spain. Only Barcelona can stop Zinedine Zidane’s side but the contrast in squads between the two rivals sums up the difference in approach that has put Real back in front in La Liga. While the wage demands of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar have played their part in preventing Luis Enrique and his directors from adding more depth to their squad, Madrid have stockpiled players that would have whole teams built around them elsewhere. Greatest depth:Attacking options – Zidane has more match-winners to choose from off the bench or to rotate in and out of his team than any other club manager in European football. When Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale can’t cut it, Alvaro Morata, James Rodriguez, Isco, Mateo Kovacic, Marco Asensio and Lucas Vazquez are there to make the difference. Least cover: None – Real Madrid have at least one player as cover for every single position in their team.
