It’s less what is on my bookshelf than how the books are organised that’s the most telling. For example, there is a cluster of nautical books, fiction and non fiction: there’s Patrick O’Brian and Frederick Marryat and a bunch of local authors and historians. And in the middle of all these is The Fandom of the Operator. I’ve got Harlan Ellison right next to The Flight of the Heron next to my hardback copy of Monstrous Regiment. Sartre and Camus and Frankenstein in Baghdad and The Dream of the Celt. And it just goes on like that.

#I’ve tried okay?#the only thing that kind of makes sense is my copy of Kidnapped next to a book on the Stevenson Lighthouses and the family that made them #I should never have bought a bookshelf #to be fair it is MOSTLY sorted by topic #it’s just sometimes I think the topics pair well or are similar enough to a completely different book #Kafka right next to this set of post apocalyptic comedy comic books is.#mm.#I don’t have a very large bookshelf though #whatever doesn’t fit on the shelf goes on an old shoe rack which is also my linens cupboard #although I will NOT break up the Time Travellers Almanac and Night Watch and Les Mis #those three need to be together #anyways
