Valerie and Her Week of Wonders analysis
Since I read the novel and the movie adaptation, I just realized is that Valerie and Her Week of Wonders is timeless like ASOUE. It's like we don't know what time period that novel sets.
The illustrations from the novel version, you can see the fashion are like from 1860s-1870s. Some say that took place in medieval era because the gothic style in the novel but with victorian aesthetic in it.
Here's some illustrations by Kamil Lhoták:
VAHWOW novel mentions the 19th century furnishings, this gives us a hint if that novel takes place in 19th century.
They also mentioned oil lamps, lamp posts, Vaudeville, burn stake, crypts, horse drawn carriages and imperialism in Africa in both novel and movie adaptation.
In the movie version, the fashion style were like Edwardian. Elsa's riding outfit, Orlik's gamekeeper outfit and straw hat, Valerie's dresses and some are short sleeved in inaccurate way to fit that era.
Although the movie location of Slavonice is the architecture of the buildings was like medieval-renaissance style. This was a hint is that they live in a medieval style town as the novel said it use to be in medieval era or not.
In fact, VAHWOW took place approximately between late 1860s-early 1900s.
