At her third and final Olympics in 1994 (the first her parents were able to attend; as residents of East Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall, they were not allowed to travel to watch her), Katarina Witt closed out the women’s free skate with a program set to the anti-war song Where Have All the Flowers Gone?. It was a tribute to the people of Sarajevo, the city where she won her first of two Olympic golds, who were already two years into the Siege of Sarajevo and would end up suffering two more.

Today in random figure skating trivia: what is something these three Olympic figure skaters - Johnny Weir, Katarina Witt, and Fleur Maxwell - have in common?
The answer: All three of them are ✨starlikes ✨ - that is to say, they each have an asteroid named after them.
12413 Johnnyweir was discovered in 1995 by Russian amateur astronomer Timur Valer'evich Kryachko and named in 2010. The name was apparently suggested by Weir’s Russian fans.
36800 Katarinawitt was discovered in 2000 by Jens Kandler, a German amateur astronomer. It was named for Witt in 2005 - making her, so far as I could find, the first figure skater to have an asteroid named for her.
255019 Fleurmaxwell was discovered by Matt Dawson, an amateur British astronomer who lives and observes the skies in Maxwell’s home country, Luxembourg, in 2005. They are all named after famous Luxembourgers, and this one was named for her in 2011.
