Now if this was real world physics, that would be fine but in kerbal world, how will people know how many fuel units that is? It would be nice if you included things like that. Nitpicky, but in the rocket equation example your result is "we will burn 1225kg of fuel". Please let me know what you think! (And of course, let me know of any errors you might find!)ĮDIT: Fixed a problem with the angle theta in the angular momentum section, as well as a minor formatting problem.Ī couple of things I think would be good additions: Conversion factor for fuel weight. etcĪfter adding these sections, I would like to add a separate section that works through Hohmann transfers (I think I spelled this wrong in the document), planetary phase angles. I'm planning on adding a section on the vis-viva equation (which was pretty much used and motivated in the section on energy anyway) as well as a few sections on elliptical orbits, eccentricity. I feel that this sort of approach can help eliminate much of the confusion that inevitably seems to pop up when dealing with physics. The guide is focused on using physics equations as building blocks towards solving practical problems. This guide (still incomplete) will hopefully be able to take someone with at least basic proficiency in physics and math to a level where the physics of orbital mechanics don't represent a barrier to doing calculations or developing tools for KSP. I'm working on collecting together the most relevant physics concepts & equations for KSP into one place.

If every time you ran out of fuel trying to expand your orbit to match the Mun’s, you were left with a dead Kerbal, the game would quickly get quite morbid. And that’s good because failure will likely be a regular occurrence in the early days. So if you check back in a few years’ time, it won’t be a Kerbal skeleton looking back at you from the cockpit, having run out of air or food, but a still living and smiling Kerbal. However, if you get a ship out into space either in a stable orbit or past escape velocity then your Kerbal can survive in the rocket, indefinitely. If your symmetry is off or you mess up the staging, leading to your engines being out of sync then your rocket’s more likely to end up in the sea than in orbit. If your rocket is too heavy for your engines, then your rocket won’t get off the ground. You can reduce the temperatures encountered in re-entry but that’s about as far as if goes. Physics are what they are and the game doesn’t make any real allowances in terms of difficulty for that. Kerbal Space Program is one of those strange games that takes itself both seriously and not seriously at the same time. Sounds technical and boring? It’s much more fun than it sounds. So for those of you not familiar with the Kerbal Space Program, it’s a space flight simulation game. True I didn’t quite realise at the beginning just how long that wait would be but it got there eventually. While I was tempted to give this game a try back in Alpha release, I chose to be patient and wait for the completed version. Kerbal Space Program was officially released back in May 2015, but it was released in early access way back in 2011.
