For anyone who has the fucking nerve to tell me that we need to pay for water have a read
At first I thought this was funny....Then I realised the awful truth of it. Be sure to read all the way to the end! Think bin charges need to be added in too.
Tax his land,
Tax his bed,
Tax the table
At which he's fed.
Tax his work,
Tax his pay,
He works for peanuts
Anyway!
Tax his cow,
Tax his goat,
Tax his pants,
Tax his coat.
Tax his tobacco,
Tax his drink,
Tax him if he
Tries to think.
Tax his car,
Tax his gas,
Find other ways
To tax his ass.
Tax all he has
Then let him know
That you won't be done
Till he has no dough.
When he screams and hollers;
Then tax him some more,
Tax him till
He's good and sore.
Then tax his coffin,
Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in
Which he's laid.
When he's gone,
Do not relax,
It's time to apply
The inheritance tax.
Accounts Receivable Tax
Airline surcharge tax
Airline Fuel Tax
Airport Maintenance Tax
Building Permit Tax
Cigarette Tax
Cooking Tax
Corporate Income Tax
Goods and Services Tax (GST)
Death Tax
Driving Permit Tax
Environmental Tax (Fee)
Excise Taxes
Income Tax
Fishing License Tax
Food License Tax
Petrol Tax (too much per litre)
Gross Receipts Tax
Health Tax
Heating Tax
Inheritance Tax
Interest Tax

Tax (VAT) on Tax.
And Now they want a blooming Carbon Tax!
STILL THINK THIS IS FUNNY?
Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago, & our nation was one of the most prosperous in the world... We had absolutely no national debt, had a large middle class,a huge manufacturing base, and Mum stayed home to raise the kids.
What in the Hell happened? Could it be the lying parasitic politicians wasting our money?
Oh, and don't forget the relatively new bank charges....
And we all know what we think of Bankers.
I hope this goes around Canada at least 1,000,000,000 times!!!
YOU can help it get there!

Tumblr media
Do you take a walk every day? I walk dogs for a living so I'm out for 4-5 hours during the week. I do as little as possible at weekends though, I like the break.
Who was your favourite musical artist when you were 15? Do you still listen to them? Fall Out Boy, Green Day and Panic! At the Disco. I don't really listen to any of them anymore.
What's your preferred way of getting the news? Just online or via social media.
If you go to flightradar24 dot com to see the radar, are there any planes or helicopters in your area right now? The nearest one is a SwissAir plane going from Zurich to Montreal. It's just off the coast at the moment.
When was the last time you ate at a food court and what did you get? God, years ago. We don't have any food courts anywhere near us. I probably had Chinese.
Would you consider yourself traditional/old-fashioned? In some ways I guess.
How do you like your eggs cooked? I only really like poached eggs, though fried can be okay sometimes too.
Have you ever taken a ride in a yellow car that wasn't a taxi? Maybe? I don't really remember. Taxis around here don't tend to be yellow anyway.
What was the last thing you had to return to a store and why? I can't remember the last time I returned something - probably when I worked in retail and had some jeans that faded really fast and developed a hole.
Do you need to get groceries right now? No, the food shop only arrived a few days ago. I tend to shop once a week.
What's your favourite place to go on vacation? Italy, Scotland and Canada.
What state/territory did you grow up in? Do you still live there? Suffolk, England. And no, I do not.
What colour were the last socks you wore? Grey and cream.
Do you mark your emails as read even if you didn't open them, or do you let them just sit there? I check my e-mails and delete them at least five times a day. A messy inbox really stresses me out, hahah.
Do you have a LinkedIn profile? I do but I can't remember the last time I used it.
Have you ever done your own compost? Yeah. We had a compost heap at home when I was growing up.
Do you have any plans for tomorrow? If no, what about the day or two after that? Yeah, work - the same for the following two days ha.
Would you ever get a tattoo on your hand or foot? No. I hate people touching my feet and I don't like hand tattoos.
Do you open your doors and windows on warm days? Windows yes, doors no as otherwise the cats would get out.
Are the blinds/curtains in the room open or closed right now? One set are closed, the others are open.
Who was the last person you said "I love you" to? Toby (the cat).
Does your town have a bar or pub? Yeah, one bar and several pubs.
Were you mean to anyone in high school? Nope.
What's one of your favourite features of your phone? Face ID.
Have you ever accidentally started a fire? Not a major one, but yeah.
Do you ever wonder where everyone's going when you're driving around? Not really. I never really think much about other people.
Do you forget things as quickly as you think of them? Sometimes, yeah.
What is the last note you edited in your phone's notes app? Probably my list of lockbox code for work.
Who is your favourite coworker? You can tell me about one from your past if you don't have one right now. Nathan, Mandy or Alex B. I miss all of them, they were lovely.
Can you hear birds chirping right now? Nope, it's nighttime. I put my birds to bed about an hour and a half ago. And all the wild birds outside are asleep, too.
Have you ever learned a language on your own, as in, not attending classes or lessons? I tried to learn Italian and Spanish on Duolingo but soon got bored. My dad taught me basic Italian as a little kid too.
Do you know anyone who's adopted a child? My mum was adopted and a girl I went to school with had an adopted sister.
Are you good at parallel parking? I can do it when nobody is watching, lol.
What scent is your body wash? Vanilla and Shea butter.
Do you tend to wear your clothes more than one day before washing them? It depends on the clothes. Anything that's right next to my skin gets washed after each wear but jumpers/jackets etc. can get several wears out of them. I do work with animals though so my work stuff all goes straight in the wash at the end of the day.
What was the last video game or board game you purchased? I last downloaded Scavenger Hunt for my phone.
Pulp or no pulp in your orange juice? No pulp.
Is your middle name common? Yeah, very common.
What's your favourite Robin Williams movie? Mrs Doubtfire.
Do you decorate your house for Halloween? No.

Getting Into Wild Ice Skating and Nordic Skates
Tumblr media
Photo credit: All of the photos in this blog post are by Luc Mehl. Check out his new online course Wild Ice!
Alaska in the winter time is very special. If you live here, you really do need to take up a winter sport (or three) to enjoy the six months of cold, snow and ice. I enjoy many methods of exploring Alaska landscapes by self-propelled modes of transport. Skis, running shoes, paddles, bikes and skates! Growing up in Ontario, Canada I am no stranger to ice skating (or just skating as we call it). Moving to Anchorage I was re-acquainted with my ice time roots, channeling my inner twelve year old with a hockey stick in my hand, it was like riding a bike. Anchorage has really cool opportunities for ice skating. Right here in the city there are half a dozen places that are maintained by the municipality to ice skate all winter long. From small lakes to a couple of outdoor ovals, this is a great place to get into skating. The municipality drives pickup trucks onto the ice when it is thick enough and Zamboni’s it with a hot mop. Picture a water tank in the bed of a pickup truck and a large mop doing laps around your favorite little lake. Pretty cool! Ice skating with hockey skates is one way to do it. I got a few pairs of second hand skates at Play it Again Sports, gear swaps and Champion's Choice to outfit the family, and we have enjoyed many years of skating. Getting used to the less than perfect conditions of these manicured lakes is a great intro to building your skills, confidence and curiosity to try out some more adventures on ice.
Tumblr media
Several years ago I noticed a few people wearing what looked like some sort of fancy free-heeled speed skates on the lakes. Nordic Skates! For those who aren’t familiar with these skates yet, you indeed wear cross country ski boots, and the blades have nordic ski bindings to clip your toes into. Long flat blades, perfect for expanding your horizons on adventurous ice conditions. Some people wear skate skiing cross country ski boots, some wear backcountry cross country ski boots, and others have a hard boot.
Tumblr media
Hale got a pair first, and I stared in awe as he gained confidence and speed circling me in my rocker blade hockey skates doing laps around the pond. I was thrilled to be gifted a pair of nordic skates from my former employer Skhoop back in 2017 and get into the sport. Now there is a local gear builder making great (and beautiful) Nordic Skates right here in Anchorage, Alaska! Check out Ermine Skate directly or shop local at retailers Alaska Mountaineering and Hiking and The Hoarding Marmot. I can’t justify buying a replacement pair yet since I got new ones a few years ago, but I am excited that they exist and to refer friends to these awesome skates that are getting great reviews. Maybe when my kids start nordic skating, they can have my “old ones” and I can finally get a pair of Ermine Skates!
Tumblr media
Now, it is one thing to go nordic skating on the lakes in Anchorage, when you have the comfort blanket of the municipality driving one-ton trucks with water tanks on the ice, and local ice reports telling you how thick it is. But, what if you want to expand your horizons? Maybe the next step will be to Potter Marsh, where groupthink and seeing a half a dozen families with kids with smiling faces twirling around the ice gives you an idea it’s probably okay. Afterall Potter Marsh is shallow and right by the road system, right?! The next adventure after that you start to hear about is either Portage Lake or the Palmer Hay Flats. I’ve driven all the way to Portage to find that the lake is open water – not skatable, duh! And I’ve driven all the way to Palmer and found different things – miles of pristine river skating on Rabbit Slough, overflow conditions, tracked and rutted out ice, and great biking conditions (leaving the skates in the car). Could I have been better prepared? Where else is there to go? Even if other people are there how will I know it is safe to go? I know from experience, Alaska adventures, and life, that you definitely should not do something and think it is safe “just because other people are doing it.”
This winter is one of those where I have drooled over gorgeous photos of friends skating near Grewingk Glacier and other places, but not knowing how or when to go there, and a failed Rabbit Slough outing where we literally had to bike, since skating was not possible.
Tumblr media
How on earth am I supposed to learn more about this sport and advance to the kind of adventures I dream of safely?
Well, I recently learned that Luc Mehl, the wilderness adventurer and professional outdoor educator we have referred to time and again for planning backcountry adventures year-round has recently developed an online course all about Wild Ice! I know that Luc has been safely and successfully returning from epic wild ice adventures for years, with some of those pictures I mentioned dreaming about. He is a certified ice and swiftwater rescue instructor, has traveled over 10,000 miles of remote Alaska by all methods of self-propelled transport, literally wrote The Packrafting Handbook, is an experienced teacher of safety courses in person and online, and his website Things to Luc At has been a primary resource for planning many of our trips to remote Alaska covering everything from inspiration, to route planning and navigation, to best practices and safety.
Why I signed up for his new online course Wild Ice? I want to know more about the equipment I need to add to my quiver, how to use it, and to overall gain confidence to take the next steps in developing my skills to adventure to new places on ice in the backcountry. I am no stranger to the dangers of adventuring in remote wilderness. Add ice, cold water and Alaska winter into the mix, and it definitely makes me want to know more about safety! One day I’ll go skate beside glaciers and ice bergs, but I literally don’t know what the next step is forward from where I am. I am excited to learn more, and to be as safe and confident as possible in what I carefully choose to do next.
Registration for this course is open now, and you get unlimited access to watch the videos, so you can review each season. I can’t wait to learn more and share about my future adventures on Wild Ice!

Faux-fur blankets work well in many spaces, and make especially great picks in the colder fall and winter months. According to Alessandra Wood, director of style at Modsy, “They’re luxurious and a great way to stay warm in the cold months while adding a ‘winter wonderland’ feel to a space.” They’re also more affordable (and less ethically complicated) than blankets made from actual fur, but often just as cozy (and cozy-looking) as the real deal. “They add instant warmth and elegance to any space,” says Decorist creative director Jessica McCarthy. For a comfy pick at a relatively approachable price point, few styles beat this extra-large throw from CB2. As Lydecker says, “size is super important. Remember to stay within the range of 50 to 70 inches, so it’s large enough to snuggle up in.” This throw blanket’s gray shade should work with most rooms’ décor schemes, and its rich, textured layers make it look much more expensive than it actually is.

For a portable propane tank for a gas barbecue grill, for example, you could shop at dozens of retailers; for a 100-pound propane tank for a welding project, Tractor Supply is the more likely go-to. Much like specialty pet retailers, Tractor Supply is getting a tailwind from the pandemic surge in pet adoption. Overall, animal feed and agricultural products like fencing and fertilizer generate about half its net sales. Those staples are central to getting people into stores, where they might round out a shopping trip with a puppy chew toy or a baseball cap from the Kevin Costner TV ranch drama Yellowstone. “We want to get people in with their essentials, and then we can get the rest of the basket,” says chief merchant Seth Estep. That approach helps explain why Tractor Supply has managed to increase sales during each of the last three downturns, including the pandemic mini-crash: People feed their alpacas at the alpaca shop, and their livestock, through thick or thin.

Kids' Bedding Retail in Canada
Disney character bedding, which features Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, and other well-known Disney characters, is a relatively recent idea in kids' bedding retail in Canada. The best part about these beddings is that the majority of them come with various nursery accessories, ensuring that you can easily complete the Disney theme for your kid room décor with all of the complementary accessories.

COVID-19, Inequality, and You
This pandemic has been a bad time in a lot of ways, but one of the most devastating impacts we’re going to see besides the death toll is the economic impact - the economic impact on real, working people, not on stock index numbers. Unemployment rates are skyrocketing, and people are being thrown into financial chaos as a result.
But for all the talk we’ve heard during this pandemic of “we’re all in this together”, and “we’re all in the same boat”, it’s important to remember that, financially, we’re really, really not. Job losses, evictions and health crises are not equally distributed; if anything, this pandemic has been a stark reminder of inequality as the wealth gap grows wider and wider.
My own life has been a weird cross-section of the ways that the pandemic has economically affected different people in very different ways - my mother has completely lost her job at a seasonal tourist restaurant that will likely go out of business, my brother’s hours at his campus security job have been cut as the school moves online, my boyfriend is seeing his savings rise as he goes out less but makes exactly the same salary at his financial tech job, and I’ve fielded multiple job offers through this pandemic as government grants for social services boom in my region in anticipation of a coming homelessness crisis.
The news has been reporting on unemployment numbers and shuttered businesses, but there hasn’t been a lot of in-depth coverage about the ways that this is really going to affect people’s lives. There will be a lot of unexpected consequences to this pandemic if governments don’t step in to provide relief, including:
‘Eviction freezes’ are throwing tenants into debt without protecting their housing. Many places have put moratoriums on evictions during the pandemic, which is great. You don’t want a sudden surge in mass homelessness during a pandemic. But “no evictions” does not mean “no rent” - people who are currently being protected from eviction are still being charged rent, and their arrears are growing every month. As soon as eviction protections expire - which is set to happen very soon in many places - landlords can move forward with evicting tenants, going after their back rent, sending their debt to collection agencies and destroying their credit scores.
A lot of people are about to lose most of their possessions. If you get evicted, your parents or friend might have room for you to move in with them for a while. They probably do not have room for your couch, dresser, bed, table, desk, bookshelves, TV and an entire apartment full of stuff. Putting your things in storage is an option, but you need to be able to pack and transport all of your things to the storage unit and pay for the unit every month. You could try selling the stuff you can’t take with you, but it may be difficult with so many other people also struggling financially, and you may have to leave on short notice. A lot of people who get evicted will end up abandoning a lot of their stuff, which they’ll have to re-purchase all over again to get back on their feet.
People with low wages are disproportionately likely to lose their jobs. If you work as a software engineer, you’re probably still employed. If you work as a hotel maid, there’s a good chance you’ve lost your job or had your hours cut to nearly nothing. The jobs that are most impacted by shutdowns are jobs in the service and hospitality industry, and they tend to be low-wage, hourly jobs that cannot be done from home - bartenders, servers, hotel clerks, and dishwashers are way more likely to have lost their jobs than lawyers, accountants, engineers and college professors. In many ways, the people who are getting kicked the hardest right now are the ones who could least afford it.
Not every university will survive this pandemic. With a lot of universities and colleges scrambling to figure out whether to have in-person fall semesters, the future of a lot of post-secondary institutions looks bleak. Many students are choosing to take a year off or defer their admission rather than deal with online courses that have been haphazardly thrown together. On top of that, it’s not clear if international students will be able to attend university abroad this year, or if they even want to take the risk. This adds up to a whole lot of lost tuition money, leaving some universities with no way to keep operating - at least one American university has already permanently closed its doors because of the pandemic. The big players - Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Columbia - will probably pull through, but smaller colleges are at serious risk of going under, leaving their students in limbo and at risk of not finishing their disrupted degrees.
A lot of people are about to go from “poor” to “disabled”. The people most likely to contract coronavirus are the workers who have to interact with the public every day - not only nurses and doctors, but grocery store workers, delivery people, ride-sharing and taxi drivers, transit workers and janitorial staff. Those who survive are at risk of life-long complications of coronavirus, including permanently reduced lung capacity - that’s not great when you need to work a physically demanding job. A lot of people are about to find themselves in a situation where they are no longer able to do their jobs due to a virus that they contracted because of their jobs.
Many women’s careers may never recover from this. Daycares and schools are closed, and women are bearing the brunt of it. In a world where women still tend to earn less than male partners, it’s women’s careers that have taken a backseat when things get rough. Even when both partners are working from home, women are the ones overwhelmingly taking on most of the domestic and child-rearing chores, which hurts their work performance and leaves them more vulnerable to layoffs. And that’s a relatively privileged position to be in - without childcare services available, many working moms and single moms have had to quit their jobs, whether they could afford it or not, because they have no other options for their children. This kind of career disruption is something that these women may never totally recover from, especially as they try to re-enter an increasingly hostile job market.
Black and brown people are the most affected by rising unemployment. People of colour - especially immigrants and women of colour - are facing higher rates of unemployment than other groups. Hispanic and Latina women are in particularly dire circumstances, which is alarming, as they are also the most likely to be dealing with an uncertain immigration status. People of colour - particularly women - are disproportionately likely to work in industries that have been impacted by the pandemic, like the hospitality, food service, retail, child care, beauty and personal care industries, and they face systemic racism that makes it difficult for them to advocate for safe working conditions or access adequate medical care.
College and tourist towns are at risk of complete economic meltdown. A lot of towns or small cities depend on their local university or annual tourism to survive. A huge crowd of strangers flocks to their town for a few months per year and gives local businesses the money they need to pay for necessities year-round. My hometown is one of these places - most businesses are only open from May - September, and they make enough money during that time for everyone to scrape by for the rest of the year. Those tourists aren’t coming this year, which is something that locals have only learned as they begin to run out of last year’s money. You don’t need to work for a university or a hotel to be impacted by school and tourism shutdowns - the ripple effects will be felt by entire communities.
Escaping domestic violence will be difficult even after lockdown ends. It’s not exactly a secret that domestic violence has skyrocketed since the global pandemic began, a fact that many experts attribute to the fact that everyone is trapped indoors together and under a lot of stress. But even as lockdown regulations start to lift in areas that handled the pandemic responsibly, victims of domestic violence will face higher-than-usual barriers to escape - many victims may have lost their jobs and burned through their savings, and may have difficulty finding a new job that can finance their escape. Victims with health issues may also be wary about going to shelters for fear they will be further exposed to the virus.
Poor children will fall even further behind their upper-middle-class peers. I come from a part of rural eastern Canada where reliable internet access is simply not available. So for young children in the region, school effectively ended in March - they do not have the resources needed to connect to online learning. And children from rural areas aren’t the only ones missing out - more than half of all students in the United States aren’t accessing their online classes regularly, and marginalized kids are especially likely to be absent. Poor kids are staring down the barrel of an enormous education gap; they are less likely to have a stable internet connection and a device for their online learning, they are less likely to have books at home, and their parents are more likely to be essential workers who still have to go to work right now and don’t have time to teach them. Middle-class and wealthy families can afford laptops, educational software, tutors, books and time at home to educate their children - when schools are eventually back in session, the gaps between children from different socioeconomic backgrounds will probably be the widest they’ve ever been.
Don’t get me wrong - I am not arguing that we should end lockdowns prematurely to ease the economic impact. Public health measures exist for good reason, and I don’t think any of us want to even imagine, much less live through, the personal, physical and economic devastation of letting a pandemic rage out of control and melt down our healthcare systems. Despite what many people seem to believe, managing a global pandemic is not about “health vs. economy” - letting the virus rage out of control and kill millions would devastate every economic and social system we have. The preservation of human life has to come first.
What we need instead is comprehensive action to recognize and address the issues that come with long-term quarantines and economic shutdown - we need rent relief, social safety nets and basic assured income programs to get our most vulnerable friends and neighbors through this pandemic. The world will probably never return to the “normal” that we knew before the pandemic struck, and it shouldn’t - it’s time for a new, better normal that doesn’t leave our most marginalized people behind.

No, sir; it is to fall upon the less wealthy class of our citizens, chiefly upon the non-slaveholder.
No, sir; it is to fall upon the less wealthy class of our citizens, chiefly upon the non-slaveholder. “After the big battle where the King-Beyond-the-Wall was killed, the wildlings ran away, and this woods witch said that if they went to Hardhome, ships would come and carry them away to someplace warm. All this deeply wounded the good-hearted Nikolay Sergeyitch; for a long time he refused to believe his senses. Sam yowled, the bird flapped off, corn scattered. Further along an illuminating set of rooms explain the head scratching behind band's more notorious stage designs, including the giant inflatable Honky Tonk Woman and the Lotus design used in Madison Square Garden, and of course the development of that famous logo. 2: On Consumerism, Fighting Demons, and Societies Inevitable Collapse
Quarantine has been lowkey surreal. My constant complaint of never having enough time to do all the things I want/should be doing has now left me bored in the house, bored in the house, bored with nothing but time to get said things done. However, it is a dual edged sword - with the collapse and subsequent reformation of civil society outside my doors, it leaves me wondering – as well as a lot of other people – in the words of Miss Juicy…what the hell we gone do now?
Nearing the end of the first leg of my university career, I should be thinking about getting ready to transition to the next logical stages of adulthood - saving for an apartment, applying for permanent residency, as well as graduate schools and part time jobs. Yet, I’m worried about if these things will even be a possibility within the next month, six months, or even the next year.
On top of ALL of that, the recent BLM protests and the way that people (read: white people, Latinxs, Black men, homo/transphobes, etc.) have shown their asses the past few months is beyond mortifying - especially regarding the treatment of black women and how our value as individuals as well as a collective to society is really perceived.* This is not to downplay the murder of numerous black men in society, BUT who the fuck is riding for black women aside from other black women? And not just the ones who find attractive, or are racially ambiguous, or the ones you feel as if you get “guilted” into supporting and demanding justice for, I mean each and every black woman. I’m just saying, it gets pretty disheartening to feel like the legwork of the revolution is on the back of one category of people, and that your value to society is measured by the amount of emotional labour you’re ready to do for others, or how fat your ass is (but I digress…).
I feel like most people have used material things as coping mechanisms instead of actually facing their feelings and dealing with the things that bother them. Just think of the number of packages that have arrived on your doorstep the past few months. Breaking the glossy seal of packing tape is similar to therapy, until all the boxes are open, and you start feeling like shit again. And now, more than ever, there’s a lot to be bothered about. Western society has dedicated phrases based on the phenomenon of substituting true self-work with figurative emotional bandages (Phrases like comfort eating and retail therapy come to mind).
It’s nice to think that we – the people entering their adolescent and young adult years – will be the one to change these things, but suddenly it’s 2 am, you have twenty different things in your Amazon cart, (who the fuck needs a metal straw cleaning kit?) and you’re trying to see how far you can stretch and grab your debit card before falling off of the bed.
The conflicting messages pushed by society don’t help all that much either. If you look up “Kondo method” or “decluttering my closet” on YouTube, the numbers of videos that come up is astounding. Pages and pages of sweaty-faced, smiling YouTubers monetizing from this kind of faux “minimalism” only to post haul videos a few days later because “I threw everything out and now I have to rebuild from scratch sksksk!”. Does this not just perpetuate a cycle of buying and throwing and buying? I am....confusion, to say the least. Still I watch them, because I’m a hypocrite, and am also easily amused.
I will be the first to admit I have always had a very unhealthy relationship with money, with self-image, and with measuring my self-worth in proximity with “stuff that stems from a complicated relationship with physical self. Follow along:
Growing up, I was a fat kid. We don’t even have to sugar coat it. Think Terrio, but better eyebrows and more hair. Except I was not killin’ em, just myself. I always envied my friends who were able to go shopping at regular stores – read: Hollister, Abercrombie, Urban Outfitters (yes my friends were white), meanwhile I was condemned to shopping in the women’s department.
So, to compensate, I would buy trinkets – things like nail polish, lip gloss, journals, you get the point. My proximity to worthiness was measured not by the things that I bought, but within the act of buying. Growing up with parents who were also financially frugal also altered my relationship with money and blessed me with crippling buyers’ remorse after every purchase, even on things that are important (read: groceries).
But as a kid, buying “stuff” was fun for me – it gave me some sort of purpose, and the acquisition of things (even if they weren’t the same things my peers had) made me feel like, to some extent, I could compete on the same playing field. As I got older, and I started to have real expenses, I moved towards second-hand shopping. I would religiously find myself at Goodwill on weekend, after school, or with friends. I could literally feel an endorphin rush when I would find something that I would consider a “good deal”, and it made me feel (again) purposeful, to be spending money, even if I didn’t need whatever I was buying.
I should also add that the people in my immediate family does not believe in thrift stores (“Why am I working for you to wear other people’s clothing?”, I remember my dad asking me one day), so the act of second-hand shopping was also my form of rebellion.
I began to amass a collection of clothing that would put Kylie’s closet to shame. I began buying things for events and situations that were yet to happen, for other people, for when I lose ten pounds. It was a madness.
In freshman year of university, I had an unhealthy relationship with clubbing clothes. Did I have the figure for clubbing clothes? Absolutely not. The funnier part is, I couldn’t even go clubbing because I wasn’t 19 at the time. And yet I had drawers and drawers full of the stuff. Not to mention that clubbing clothes is incredibly similar to summer clothing and living between Minnesota and Canada meant that these things were barely seeing the light of day.
The moral of this was – I could never figure out my relationship with stuff, This quarantine has forced me to try and break down the compulsion behind my behaviour.  I felt like I was spiralling the six weeks that they closed thrift stores, and I knew myself well enough to not try and online shop with the same kind of frequency as that. But the crazy part was, I didn’t die. I didn’t go into withdrawal (ok, I did a little bit, but whatever), and I was able to take the time to go through the things I already owned and find some hidden gems that were routinely buried in the cracks and crevices of my closet. It was like the episode of Family Guy when Peter realizes he has a vestigial twin – alarming and cool at first, but then it’s just alarming and annoying.
Its more embarrassing to realize that some semblance of myself image is tied to the frequency with which I am able to spend money. I would never say that participating in capitalist society gives me some kind of purpose as a black woman because God forbid. Also, considering that a lot of big names companies are actually racist and fatphobic as hell creates a whole new dimension for analyzing the power of my black dollar, sometimes creating another spiral of guilt leading to you guessed it – more spending.
As much as it seems like it, however, this self-reflection was not in vain. In the past month, I’ve cut down my closet from +200 pieces of clothing and shoes to about 40. If you ever want a fun, humbling activity this quarantine, just clean out your closet and be honest with yourself about how often you wear certain things. It was revolting to see the number of shirts, dresses, pants, skirts that I had bought and convinced myself wholeheartedly I was going to wear, only to pull them out of my closet months later with the tags attached *insert Marge Simpson covering her face meme*.
But at the end of the whole ordeal, it felt really good to look at my space and not feel burden or guilt. It was somewhat philanthropic realizing that not only will these clothes make someone else happier (I donated pretty much everything because it’s not always about money), but that my quality of life was not dramatically impacted in owning (or not owning) certain things. The past few weeks, I’ve spent more money on going out and sharing experiences with friends, but still nowhere near the same amount of money I would have spent buying clothes and other material possession.
Youtuber Kelly Stamps has a video on how minimalism “cured” her depression**, and the whole thesis boils down to the idea that owning less things gives you less to compare yourself too, thus making you happier (in a sense) and allowing you to focus the energy and time that would have been centered around maintaining and building your collection of possessions other things.
This still doesn’t break down the root of the issue, but it’s a start. I think when you have traits or patterns that you’ve participated in for so long, it becomes hard to step back and be objective enough to realize that you – yes, you – are part of the problem. I can blame my habits on a lot of things but at the end of the day, it’s important to realize that certain cycles seem never-ending because I actively choose to participate in these kinds of behaviours (accountability is sexy, huh?). While I’m not ready to face all my demons quite yet, it’s easier to do it with a nice wardrobe and a streamlined sense of mind.
Notes
*When I say black women, I mean ALL black women. Not some limited, cis-gendered, heteronormative view of what a woman is. Over here we ride for all those who identify as women.
**She emphasizes that she doesn’t actually means that it cured anything, but rather helped with her anxiety, and in turn, helped with her depression.

July Jiffs 2020
This was me all month.
Tumblr media
The key word being was. We bought an air conditioner! We’ve been an A/C-free family for some time now, but since we’re spending so much time at home, we figured now was the time to be cool. In other news, everything still blows! What a shock! Here’s how I spent July.
I didn’t even know another Halloween movie was being made but of course I’ll go see it even if it turns out to be trash, you gotta support classic horror franchises, that’s just basic horror etiquette 101.
This is the most basic, boring-sounding sandwich on planet earth, but it tastes incredible I promise you (I didn’t add bacon, but I did add fresh mozzarella) and whatever bread you use, it’ll still be great. I find myself constantly forgetting about the greatness of mayo because I, my dear, am an idiot.
I ordered a bunch of new address labels on Zazzle because they were having a Christmas in July sale, so I bought some seasonally inspired labels to use over the next few months. If you’re not seasonally co-ordinating your return address labels, are you even living?
I’m still doing Nathan’s podcast on Patreon incase you’re interested. (You can find more clips on his Instagram.)
I attempted to watch the new Baby-Sitter’s Club on Netflix and it’s really not meant for me. I was never into the books or the movie or any of it, I never liked the idea of kids caring about making money, it seemed too sad to me. “Just be a kid!” I’d always thought.
Speaking of childhood nostalgia, I have started to watch reruns online of Sweet Valley High, which I loved as a kid. It’s no Breaker High, but it’s still pretty great to rewatch. God, Jessica really was an absolute bitch.
Some other things that I’ve rewatched: Con Air (practically a perfect movie, will always love, *Nic Cage forever* might be the only tattoo I’d ever get), Supermarket Sweep is on American Netflix and I was so excited (for about three episodes) then I moved on with my life, Sleepless in Seattle (still a very nice, average, reliable movie), Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (actually a really great summer movie, will always be a fun time to watch, will forever be a huge Keanu fan, I just feel like I could trust him??), and Dick Tracy (will always love this movie even if it has eight million too many montages, the set design is gorgeous, and this one outfit that Madonna wears makes me question… everything).

Some new movies that I’ve watched: Always Be My Maybe (so, so great! How did it take me so long to see this! So many good scenes, such a good movie), The Karate Kid (insane that I hadn’t seen it before, kids were uncomfortably mean in the 80s, favourite part was when Mr. Miyagi beats up the children, great movie), The Stepfather (pretty fun time, so happy we’ve starting watching horror movies again), Eat Pray Love (ugh, I don’t know, I do love movies about women just leaving and doing fun shit alone and abandoning their lives, but this was pretty lame, I hated James Franco’s character more than life and truly didn’t understand how Julia Roberts was even briefly into him), and finally the original The Hills Have Eyes (which I loved weirdly enough despite being incredibly tense the entire movie, I just thought it was so well done and scary and incredible, the rape scene is of course awful and I shut my eyes for that part, but that was the only thing I hated, it doesn’t make sense that I liked this movie so much).
I don’t know how to word this, but something is off with the reasonably priced (and almost too cheap) parmesan sold at Trader Joe’s. It melts weird. It doesn’t taste like normal cheese. Something is afoot and I won’t buy it any longer. I’m truly dreading and equally anticipating the day that all of Trader Joe’s secrets are exposed. Be warned.
That being said, obviously I’m in love with the seasonal summer candles that TJ just released. We have a complicated relationship.

I made this gruyere mac and cheese with caramelized onions (I used almond milk and it still came out good) and can every recipe just include caramelized onions? The world is ending, let’s just put sweet, tiny, brown onions on everything and call it a day.
Ennio Morricone passed away last month and I find myself listening to the Cinema Paradiso soundtrack on repeat.
Read this great piece about summer blockbuster movies which also has just some great ideas for movies to rewatch right now.
I have to remember that Essie’s vibrant colours just f-ing suck. Only their muted/bland colours are good. They should really just stick to those. And if you’re looking for loud colours that stand out, the summer collection at Urban Outfitters is my go-to (and there’s always a 3 for $10 sale with them).
Tumblr media
I listened to Taylor Swift’s new album and so far my favourites are definitely: the 1 and this is me trying.
Ugh, Astoriaaaaaa, DO BETTER.
I’ve been thinking about cancelling my Ipsy subscription again (because I think I don’t care about makeup at this current moment in time) and when I logged on to cancel, they let me choose one of the items being sent next month as if they knew I wanted to leave! So I chose a Sunday Riley product (because any sample I’ve tried from them, I’ve loved) so maybe I’ll cancel next month?
I tried a sample of Drunk Elephant’s shampoo & conditioner (which smelled so lovely) and my hair did seem softer the next day. There’s something about this brand though, I feel like they might be tricking us with their beautiful packaging and minimalist persona.
I bought and tried the ancient Biore Strips and I have absolutely no idea if they did what they’re supposed to do. Are you supposed to see the blackheads or whiteheads come off onto the strip? It felt like it just tried to peel my face off. No idea what’s going on with these.
I have been in love with the Peter Thomas Roth Correction Pads, I use one pad before bed each night and I think they’re doing something good because I always wake up with no new pimples. It has even started erasing all of the redness I’ve been experiencing lately from the summer heat and sweat and mask-wearing. At this point, I can definitely see myself rebuying when I run out, and if I do then I’ll definitely not get them from Sephora because you can get them way cheaper at other online retailers.
I’ve also started using this Dr. Dennis Gross All-In-One face cleanser and I think it’s a good one. It’s hard to tell because I started using it the same day at the correction pads I mentioned above (yes that was a bad idea but here we are), so maybe they’re working together to make my face good? We’ll revisit this.
I finally opened up this Belif set I bought a few months ago and it’s really nothing special. I think the face cream is probably the best item in there because you truly don’t need to use a lot to feel moisturized. But the face cleanser? Meh. I don’t think it does very much, it definitely didn’t help any redness. And the toner? Don’t get me started on how I kind of think toner might be a scam. And the “eye moisturizer”? Seems superfluous. My eye area is plenty moist, thanks.
Perfect summer soap scent: Fresh Rainfall. If I can’t travel this year, I will escape into this scent. (Send help.)
Very excited to hear about Lindy West’s new book.
So I heard that Lady M now ships their cakes to Canada and I was able to scream in excitement for approx. four seconds before looking into it and seeing that it’ll cost you over $100 to get ONE cake sent. THE GALL, I tell you. THE GALL.
I briefly looked into the app Sweatcoin after hearing good things, but it really just seems like an app where its main goal is to track you. And yes, your phone already does that whether you’re aware or not, but I think I’ll pass on the extra tracking.
I heard that the upcoming Halloween Bob’s Burgers episode will “follow the kids as they try to deliver a burger to the hotel on their street.” It’s such a sad little bit of tiny information, but I love their seasonal episodes so much that I’ll take any crumbs available.
Actually helpful tips on how to clean your home efficiently.
Christ, why do I keep forgetting that Bareburger is absolutely nothing special? Why in the good fuck is it taking so long for a Shake Shack to come to Astoria?!
I ate on the patio at Hoja Santa in Astoria and the tacos were nothing to write home about. The service, drinks and chips were outstanding though, so I may have just ordered badly.
New favourite beer alert.
Best tweets of the month over here.
I tried Thai iced coffee and it was so wildly sweet and too aromatic, I probably wouldn’t get it again. And I also tried a Vietnamese iced coffee and it was the perfect level of sweet! What’s the difference between the two, you ask?
I finally tried the katsu sandwich at Hi-Collar as takeout in the East Village and it was absolutely nothing special. No idea why people are so into it.
I haven’t been to Bite in so many months, so it was nice to get takeout earlier this week. God how I’ve missed their ciabatta bread. They use it on their sandwiches and it comes from Balthazar each morning and it’s always heavenly.
I have found the perfect, light summer blanket and I’m trying not to focus on the fact that it came from Amazon.
I tried a grapefruit shandy and holy shit, it might be my favourite new summer drink.
I ate on the patio at L’Artusi since it just reopened and good god, that carbonara will change you. So psyched to see they have the wagyu steak tartare on the menu now, too. The burger, the panzanella salad and the charred corn were all great, but that carbonara was the standout.

Some things I’d like to do this month: I’d love to try this tomato toast with blue cheese mayo, I’m going to start using a new clothes steamer I just bought with the hopes of getting rid of my iron & ironing board, I rebought a tube of Revitalash because of how great my lashes were looking when I used it a few years ago so I’ll start using it on August 1st and track my progress to prove how great this product is, I can’t wait for Moesha to be coming to Netflix this month, and I am waiting waiting waiting until I can find time to return to Lilia (on the patio) to eat this incredible tomato focaccia & garlic butter (shown below).

Worthless (Shawn Mendes imagine)
Authors Note: Okay this is my first try at doing an imagine. I think mine is a little long, but I’ve been wanting to try writing one for a while. Hope you all enjoy and let me know what you think of it. Can’t wait to read your responses. Also, I listed to the SAD LOVE SONGS playlist on Spotify while writing this so if you want the full effect, listen to this while reading it. All the things that are in this story is something I deal with on a day to day basis and it’s really personal to me. Hope this helps others out there who feel unloved. P.S. Happy Canada Day! Thanks. Lots of love. xx
I thank the driver as I hop out of the uber, handing over the $30 fee. Walking across the street to my apartment complex I let out a yawn. I slide the key in my door and turn the handle. Swinging the door open I step through the doorway and lock it behind me. My backs aching and my legs feel like led after working 8 hours at my dead end job. I make my way to my bedroom, throwing my bag onto my bed and pull out a clean towel from one of my drawers. Slipping off my shoes and socks I head to my ensuite, turning on the shower. While I’m waiting for the water to warm up I peel my clothes off and assess my skin. I know my eczema’s getting bad again because I had to vacuum the skin flakes off my bed this morning, and it’s starting to stick to my clothes. So I’ve gone back to using the steroid creams and doing my wet wraps twice a day. I’ve had eczema ever since I was a baby. It went away for a while, but came back in high school and it’s still here at 23. The waters finally warm enough so I step in a let it run across my skin. 10 minutes later I pat myself dry and wrap my hair up. I slip on a pair of shorts and a tank top. Pulling four bandages out of the bathroom drawer along with my cream I get to work. While I’m putting on the three different creams, I sit the bandages in warm water in the sink and let them soak. Once I’m all creamed up I start wrapping my legs and my arms and then I wrap a towel around my legs as I sit on the cold bathroom floor, resting my arms on my legs. Then I tilt my head back against the cupboard and let the tears fall, sobs wracking my body. Along with my eczema I had depression and anxiety which made matters worse. It doesn’t help that I’m dating Shawn Mendes. I love him, of course I do, but it hurts when he’s on tour. He can’t be with me and I hate that. I constantly felt like a failure and hated how I looked. My anxiety prevented me from leaving my bed some days. I’ve made some pretty big mistakes in my past and I constantly felt worthless. I hear a bang, but I’m pretty sure it comes from my noisy neighbours. I have to catch public transport all the time because I can’t drive. My retail career isn’t my dream job, but I’m not qualified in anything else because I dropped out of university. It’s not fantastic, but it pays for my rent and bills. Most people don’t understand how hard it is to deal with eczema. They take clear skin for granted and that annoys me so much. “Baby?” I hear from outside the bathroom door “You in there?”
“No”, I say my tears although they’ve stopped still make my voice wobbly.
“Y/N, are you okay?” When I don’t respond the door swings open and Shawn is there in the doorway. “Oh, love” he says before rushing over to me to gather me in his arms. “Shh, its okay, I’ve got you”. He pulls away to place his hands on my cheeks to wipe away the tears that stream down my face. Leaning forward he plants a sweet kiss on my forehead, “come on, let’s get you cleaned up”. Shawn un-wraps my bandages and helps me rub moisturizer on my skin. “You okay to do your hair?” I nod still numb, even though the tears have gone. He gives my hand a squeeze before walking into my bedroom. After I’ve finished drying my hair and putting the dirty clothes in my hamper, I find him laying out a long sleeve top and some sweatpants. He respectfully turns around while I change. “Okay, I’m decent” I say. Shawn turns around pulling off his favourite hoodie and sliding it over my head. I pull my arms through the sleeves and slide on some clean socks. “You want some water?” I’m still too numb to talk, so I nod my head and follow him into the kitchen. He fills a glass up and hands it to me, watching as I take small sips. We walk into the lounge room and I sit on the couch next to him, placing my glass down on the table. I look down, fiddling with my hands in my lap, until he gently takes them in his. “Y/N, baby, what’s wrong?” he asks with concern, sliding his thumbs over my hands. I shake my head and refuse to look at him, until he releases a hand and lifts my chin to my eyes meet his “talk to me”. My eyes start to water
“I…” is the only thing I can get out before I break down again. He wraps both arms around and pulls me onto his lap, letting me cry against his chest. “Shh,” he says as he rubs my back in gentle strokes “just take your time. Follow my breathing. That’s it”. Once I finally get my breathing under control and the tears stop I pull back to look at him. “Hey” he says tucking a stray hair behind my ear, with a small smile on his face. “You ready to tell me what’s been going on in that pretty little head of yours?” I take a deep breath.
“Yeah. I’ve just had a stressful day and I panicked. Sitting in the bathroom before, I couldn’t help but feel guilty about doing this to you”
“Doing what to me love?” he asks in confusion, eyebrows drawn
“You have to look after me all the time, like I’m a baby. I can’t be a problem to you, because you have your busy music career. I’m worthless, I don’t deserve you’re love. I’m ugly, I don’t have a great job, and I can’t even do something as simple as driving. I just don’t know why you stick around anymore, when you could have someone less complicated.” I don’t look up at him as I finish, because I don’t want to see the judgment in his eyes that proves I’m right. I start to get up off his lap, but he grabs me around the waist pulling me back into him. He shoves his face in my neck and he says “don’t you dare” I can hear the anger in his voice and I feel him shaking. “Don’t you dare think you’re worthless”, He pulls away and takes my face into his hands “I want you to listen to me carefully, okay?”
“Okay” I say quietly.
“I love take care of you because I want, to not because I feel like you’re a little kid. I’ll never not want to take care of you. You’re never a problem to me; it’s my career that’s a problem. It makes me spend too much time away from you. I know you’ve made mistakes and it doesn’t matter to me how big or small they are because everyone makes mistakes. I know I sure do. I don’t care that you can’t drive or that your job isn’t amazing. Most importantly I don’t care that your skin isn’t flawless, you’re still the most beautiful girl in this world. I’m the one who’s not worthy of your love.” I place a hand on his cheek and peck his lips before placing my forehead on his “I’m sorry” I say
“No, I’m the one who should be sorry because it’s obvious I don’t say I love you enough and then you start thinking like this. I hate it when you get down like this. I want to be here for you all the time and I want to help you fight your battles. Fight your depression and anxiety. Be your hero. I love you, I love you with everything in me and I’ll remind you every second of everyday if you need me to”.
“Thank you. I love you to, my hero” I say with a giggle “you’re amazing you know that?”
“Not as amazing as you, beautiful”. He says with a big smile before leaning in and capturing my lips with his. I can feel the love in his kiss and I eagerly return it, wrapping my arms around his neck, while his wrap around my waist. We pull apart and he kisses the tip of my nose. “Now, Y/N my love, what did you want to do tonight?” I look at him in confusion
“Don’t you have to go to the studio tonight?”
“No, I called Geoff and told him that you need me tonight, and tomorrow you can come with me to the studio. I’m all yours” I grin at him and give him a quick kiss. “How about pizza and a movie?”
“You read my mind. I’ll go order and you can pick the movie” he picks me up and puts me on the couch so he can go make the call and I start to surf Netflix. I end up picking A Cinderella Story because it’s my favorite. A little while Shawn comes back with a big, comfy, blanket. “Pizza will be here soon, I’m just going to take a quick shower.” He says before passing me the blanket and giving me a quick kiss on the cheek. The pizza arrives and I serve it up along with two glasses of coke when Shawn turns the corner. I press play on the remote and he wraps his arm around me covering us with the blanket, while I snuggle into his side. “Cinderella story, huh”
“Yep” I say smiling up at him. Pretty soon the pizza’s gone and I feel absolutely content. I let out a yawn and I feel Shawn chuckle beside me. The movie finishes a few minutes later and he cleans up while I get ready for bed. A few minutes later he walks in, taking his jeans and t-shirt off, leaving him in only his boxers. He climbs in the bed beside me gathering me in his arms and we just look at each other. I take this time to play with his hair, fresh and still slightly wet from the shower, his curls sticking to his forehead. He closes his eyes and hums in response. My eyes are getting heavy and I let out a yawn. “Alright sleepy head, time for sleep”. Shawn rolls me over and pulls me tight into his chest, resting his face in the crook of my neck. He places a small kiss just beneath my ear. “Hey, Y/N”
“Yeah”
“I love you”
“I love you more Shawn”
“Not possible, I love you the most”
“Okay, you win”
“I know, because I’ve got the most amazing girlfriend”. And with that we drift of to sleep, me tight in his loving arms. I still had my insecurities and doubt, but knowing Shawn loved me for me made it a lot more bearable and I couldn’t be more greatful.
